Peter Grumbine reviews This Fucking Job

NEW DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS SONG, TOUR DATES, ALBUM ART, DOCUMENTARY | The People's Music:
"When most bands make an announcement, they simply do that: they make AN announcement, but not the Drive-by Truckers. No, when you get some DBT news, you get all kinds of cool shit in your inbox.

Today the Truckers released “This Fucking Job” the first song off their upcoming album “The Big To-Do,” they unveiled the cover art by the always brilliant Wes Freed, they announced tour dates, and released more screening dates for the documentary on the band “The Secret to a Happy Ending.” That’s more than most indie shitheads do in a career, and it was just another Tuesday for the Truckers."

If you haven't gotten Hubbards latest one you are missing out.

Sessions: Ray Wylie Hubbard | American Songwriter
Ray Wylie Hubbard, the bard behind Jerry Jeff Walker’s classic ‘73 cut “Up Against The Wall, Redneck Mother,” was visiting Nashville, up from his home outside of Austin, Texas, when he stopped in to discuss his new album A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There is No C). The album features the title cut (inspired by his favorite Poe poem) as well as the co-write with Hayes Carll, “Drunken Poet’s Dream,” also the first cut on Hayes’ 2007 album Trouble In Mind. Hubbard discussed life in Texas as an elder statesman of songwriting, what it’s like taking guys like Hayes under his wing and new tools like e-mail (!) and Masterwriter that keep his songwriting fresh. Take a listen to three live tracks that Hubbard recorded in our office and, below the interview, check out the video of Hubbard playing the album’s title track.

Home-Run Obama

Excellent job by our President last night.

Speech didn't soar or get too lofty. Very practical and he took some folks to task who needed it.

I support the President (though not blindly or quietly) and I support the House Dems.

The entire Senate can suck it. Those fuckers are a real problem. We must get rid of the filibuster.

News Analysis - Obama Delivers Confident Speech to a Skeptical Audience - NYTimes.com:

"He pleaded for patience and understanding. “I campaigned on the promise of change; ‘change we can believe in,’ the slogan went,” he said toward the end of the address. “And right now, I know there are many Americans who aren’t sure if they still believe we can change — or that I can deliver it.

“But, remember this,” he went on. “I never suggested that change would be easy, or that I can do it alone. Democracy in a nation of 300 million people can be noisy and messy and complicated. And when you try to do big things and make big changes, it stirs passions and controversy. That’s just how it is.”"
_______

But, surprise, here's my problem.

I hope Obama's continued talk of Bipartisanship is only for show. He MUST realize that to forsake all progress in the name of bipartisanship is a horrible decision.

These people will, never, ever, ever, fucking work with you Obama.

Do whatever Kabuke you feel you need, but if it appears that this will be your actual governing strategy, I'll work my ass off to have someone primary you in 2012.

These people hate you. They hate that you are a black man. They do not see you as a legitimate president. There is no reason to legitimize them back.

Obama Emphasizes Bipartisanship: Dems And GOP Unite In Displeasure:
"And at the same time, his continued emphasis on bipartisanship worried Democrats, while failing to appease Republicans.

Some Democrats expressed concerns Wednesday night that he had failed to learn one of the key lessons from this first year in office: that efforts to find bipartisan consensus invariably lead to watered-down legislation that still doesn't get the GOP votes.

'It is fine if he wants to meet with Republicans once a week, but I hope he doesn't think those meetings will produce anything,' Celinda Lake, a Democratic pollster who worked on the losing side of the recent Massachusetts Senate race told the Huffington Post. 'I hope he understand that bipartisanship won't work and it won't produce the results he wants.
_______

What Jon Says.

Jon Stewart Warns Dems: Republicans Are "F**king With You!" (VIDEO):
"Shocked that the Dems would make such concessions, Stewart asked, 'Don't you get what the Republicans are doing? They're fucking with you.' He then compared the ploy to the 'Wonder Years' where Fred Savage's character would repeatedly attempt to get into a station wagon, only to have his brother Wayne drive off. Stewart warned that giving into Republican agendas would be fruitless: 'No matter what you do, the Republicans are not going to let you into the station wagon.'

Correspondent Aasif Mandvi joined Stewart, going as far to say that Democrats should abandon their unrealized agenda and revert to Bush-era policies. To top it off, he unveiled a new logo for the DNC: a lifeless possum. Explained Mandvi: 'It says, 'You can't hurt us anymore. Because we're already dead.''"
_______

He did stick to the assholes last night.

Obama Takes Crack At GOP For Not Applauding Tax Cuts (VIDEO):
"The Republican lawmakers in attendance sat on their hands while the president discussed policy provisions that, ostensibly, are very much in their philosophical wheelhouse. At one point, Obama turned to the GOP leadership with surprise: 'I thought I'd get some applause on that side,' he said.

So, apparently, did others. A Democratic strategist quite pleased with the chilly Republican reception emailed the Huffington Post the following: 'Footage of every Republican sitting when Obama talked about bank tax is going straight into every 2010 ad.'"

Super-Duper Republican ASSHOLE of the century:

Alito Mouths 'NOT TRUE' At State Of The Union (VIDEO)

Daily Kos: Greenwald on Alito: "A Serious And Substantive Breach Of Protocol":
"By contrast, the behavior of Justice Alito at last night's State of the Union address -- visibly shaking his head and mouthing the words 'not true' when Obama warned of the dangers of the Court's Citizens United ruling -- was a serious and substantive breach of protocol that reflects very poorly on Alito and only further undermines the credibility of the Court. It has nothing to do with etiquette and everything to do with the Court's ability to adhere to its intended function,"

Get to some important stuff first before I start bitching.

________

Are you fucking serious?!? GODDAMMIT!

Obama: ‘I’d rather be a really good one-term president’ | Raw Story:

"'I'd rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president,' he said Monday in an interview with ABC's Diane Sawyer."

There's no such thing as a 'really good one-term president'. No. Such. Fucking. Thing.

If you are 'really good' in your first term, then you are elected for a 2nd term.

Yes, the U.S. is a clusterfuck of stupidity but not the 'Yeah, he was a really good president.... let's vote for this douchebag, instead' battered fucking wife kind of stupid... well, OK, sometimes that stupid, but.... just FUCK!

Just because he was articulate expressing this view doesn't make it any stupider than the dumbest thing Bush ever said.

You are making this really hard, Obama.

Candidate Obama criticized McCain’s spending freeze idea as ‘hatchet’ | Raw Story

_______

Snark freeze

Daily Kos: BREAKING: Liberals announce “support freeze”:

"WASHINGTON—Speaking for the millions of principled American liberals who believe in the government’s fundamental ability to best address the republic’s ills, left-wing favorite Howard Dean took the podium today in Washington to announce a 'freeze' of support for the Obama Administration and its policy agenda.

Howard Dean at today's event, speaking on behalf of liberals everywhere:

'By cutting all discretionary support for the Obama Administration over the next three years, liberals in America will save up to 250 billion hours of wasted time and energy on mid-term campaigning and voting in 2010 alone. Not to mention the millions of dollars we can save withholding campaign contributions. I know this all sounds radical, even crazy, but I don’t see liberals as having much of a choice. If we continue to let the president think he has our support, there’s no telling which atrocities he may perpetrate to win over independents. It must stop here.'"

ACORN gotcha man among four arrested for attempting to bug Mary Landrieu's office | Louisiana Politics & Government - - Louisiana Politics | State Legislature News - NOLA.com:

"The FBI, alleging a plot to wiretap Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's office in downtown New Orleans, arrested four people Monday, including James O'Keefe, a conservative filmmaker whose undercover videos at ACORN field offices severely damaged the advocacy group's credibility."
_______

The 'news' always gets it wrong.

But, point a finger we must.

John Atlas: ACORN Is Back in the News, but the News Still Gets it Wrong:
"Now ACORN is back in the news, but as part of the 'back story' linked to O'Keefe's arrest. In reporting on O'Keefe's arrest, however, the mainstream press continues to botch the ACORN story. In her report for National Public Radio, for example, reporter Eileen Fleming said that in reaction to the controversy over ACORN, Congress had blocked federal funds going to the group, without mentioning that a federal district court ruling had overturned Congress' action on December 12, 2009. The Associated Press omitted the same important fact. Reporting in the The Times-Picayune, David Hammer, repeated the myth that O'Keefe was dressed as a pimp when taping ACORN employees. In fact, O'Keefe presented himself to ACORN staffers as a friend, or boyfriend, of his colleague, Ms. Giles, who was posing as a prostitute. O'Keefe wore a dress shirt and normal clothing when he was in the ACORN offices, but spliced in shots of himself wearing the pimp outfit in the final videos to make it appear that he had worn them in the meetings with ACORN. The New York Times' story on Tuesday, by Campbell Robertson and Liz Robbins, made the same mistake."

The new findings come after researchers took a new look at the factors that limit human speed. Their conclusions? The top speed humans could reach may come down to how quickly muscles in the body can move."

Coal Mine Canaries

What Kos says... Always.

Daily Kos: Canaries in the coal mine

As you can see, our base is demoralized and tuned out, and plan on sitting out the 2010 elections at rates that will absolutely fuck us if they don't improve by November.

But again, African Americans, Latinos, and young voters aren't tuning out because we failed to build bipartisan concensus with Olympia Snowe. Making such claims is patently absurd. They're tuning out because we wasted 2009 "negotiating" with bad faith actors like Snowe and Mike Enzi. The tools were available to quickly pass a health care bill, yet Democrats were too incompetent to do so. And on issue after issue, they've proven completely ineffective.

THAT's why the base is sitting things out. They don't need blogs or MSNBC to tell them that Democrats can't govern. They already knew that Republicans don't want to govern, but the Democrats were supposed to be different. And they are, they want to govern, but they can't. And the voters that worked their asses off to give Democrats the White House and super majorities in Congress are now realizing that it was all for nothing. That all that talk about hope and change was cynical bullshit designed to motivate them. It worked once, but that crowd is learning the art of political cynicism, and it ain't pretty.

Cole may want to lash out at prominent progressives who have tried to prod our Democratic majorities in the right direction, and they certainly offer a tempting and easy target. But the reality is that voters demanded accomplishments, and on the big items, the Democrats have mostly failed. They weren't hired to tinker around the edges. They were hired to enact transformative "change". And while Cole and others like him might wish that progressives banded together to cheer along bullshit negotiations with Snowe and Enzi and repeated capitulations to an irrelevant minority and its corporatist allies in the Democratic Party, fact is, voters aren't that stupid. All the neocon cheerleading in the world didn't prevent Americans from realizing that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had been completely botched. Canned cheering for this health care bill wouldn't have saved it from similar sentiment.

Those prominent progressives have, in effect, been canaries in the coal mine -- warning of the disengagement and alienation among base voters we now see so clearly in the polling.

It would be absurd to blame those canaries for any deadly gas leaking into mine shafts.

Of His Own Making

Daily Kos: Posted without comment:

"Dear President Obama,

As someone who has been active in Democratic politics for decades and as someone who supported and worked to elect you both to the Senate and the presidency, I cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I have been by your performance.

From your selection of staff (Rahm Emanuel), and cabinet members and advisors (Geithner, Summers, et.al.), you have chosen to surround yourself with those with deep histories of favoring corporations and Wall Street over the average citizen.

The result is now clear to see: a year of work on your claimed biggest priority, health care reform, going down the drain. How sad and embarrassing, not to mention devastating, to those millions needing health care and to the Democratic Party and our hopes for 2010....."
_______

Of his own making

Op-Ed Columnist - After the Massachusetts Massacre - NYTimes.com:

"Obama’s plight has been unchanged for months. Neither in action nor in message is he in front of the anger roiling a country where high unemployment remains unchecked and spiraling foreclosures are demolishing the bedrock American dream of home ownership. The president is no longer seen as a savior but as a captive of the interests who ginned up the mess and still profit, hugely, from it."
_______

Sanders nails it. Obama just hands his ass over to the crazies because of some bipartisan fetish.

Blueprint for Dems

Instead of making it clear that the first two years of the Obama administration would be about digging the country out of the incredible mess that Bush's eight years left us in, (deep recession, financial collapse, record-breaking deficits, disintegrating healthcare system, two wars, lack of respect from the international community, neglect of the environment), Obama, incredibly, has enabled tens of millions of Americans to now believe that Bush's failures are his as well.

Unlike FDR in 1933, who consistently denounced Hoover's Republican policies as the cause of the country's perilous condition, Obama appears very reluctant to be partisan and point out to the American people the cause of our current crises. Can one imagine Obama, for example, telling the American people as Roosevelt did in 1936, "I welcome" the "hatred" of the "economic royalists" whose greed has devastated the country?

In response to Obama's genteel and bipartisan outreach, the Republicans have undertaken an unprecedented campaign of rhetorical savagery. The Right-Wing Echo Chamber of Fox News and talk-radio has implied that Obama is an "illegitimate" president not born in the United States, that he is a friend of terrorists, that he is an antiwhite racist, that he rules unconstitutionally and that his administration reeks of Chicago-style corruption. And those are the respectful attacks!

In the overwhelmingly Democratic Senate the situation has been equally dismal. There, the Senate Finance Committee created a Gang of Six that included three Republicans--two of whom (Grassley and Enzi) are extremely conservative--to determine the shape of healthcare reform. Amid cries of "death panels," "socialized medicine" and "government takeover of health care," the meetings dragged on and on.

'I'm telling you, you're losing your base,' he continued. 'Do you understand that you're losing your base? And that the American people don't want public option, the American people want single-payer!?''"
....Democrats.....

"'We are still in an ideological fight for the country,' he barked. 'We gotta make sure that President Obama gets the message. We're with you, but you gotta be with us.'"
...Like this please dear god.

"'I probably wouldn't make a very good candidate,' Schultz admitted. 'I don't believe in bipartisanship. After the way (Republicans) ran the country into the ground for the last 8 years what the hell you want me to work with them on?'"

Doug Kendall: Citizens United: The Problem Isn't the Law, It's the Court:

"That is because today, the Court's conservative majority re-wrote the Constitution to give corporations -- never mentioned in the Constitution -- the same right to influence the electoral process as 'We the People.' As the NYT's Adam Liptak explains, 'Sweeping aside a century-old understanding and overruling two important precedents, a bitterly divided Supreme Court ... ruled that the government may not ban political spending by corporations in candidate elections.' The justices did what many progressives feared for months it would do: hold that long-standing restrictions on corporate campaign spending violate the First Amendment."

Critics: ‘Destructive’ Supreme Court decision ‘empowers corruption’ | Raw Story:
"With its ruling today, the Supreme Court has given a green light to a new stampede of special interest money in our politics. It is a major victory for big oil, Wall Street banks, health insurance companies and the other powerful interests that marshal their power every day in Washington to drown out the voices of everyday Americans.

This ruling gives the special interests and their lobbyists even more power in Washington -- while undermining the influence of average Americans who make small contributions to support their preferred candidates.

That's why I am instructing my Administration to get to work immediately with Congress on this issue. We are going to talk with bipartisan Congressional leaders to develop a forceful response to this decision. The public interest requires nothing less."

Top films of the decade:
"2. 25th Hour (2002): Spike Lee filmed this screen version of David Benioff's novel, about a New York drug dealer (Edward Norton) on his last day of freedom, just months after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The first great 21st century film made about a 21st century subject, Lee's movie was a meditation on New York and America, and it captured for all time the spiritual misery and confusion that followed that tragedy. Misunderstood as just a pretty good movie in its time, it's an American masterpiece."

Weak and Wrong

This is getting way too comical but way too not fucking funny.

Obama needs to snap the fuck out of it and Congressional Dems need to remove their heads from their asses.

Bottom line: Obama is not the President I voted for. This man doesn't have my vote in 2012.

Any 'good' that has come from this Presidency is nothing more than the picking of low hanging fruit that any fucking Democrat would of picked if they had been elected Prez.

I did not vote for Obama to pluck low hanging fruit.

Obama needs to: 1. Grow a pair. 2. Get over this bipartisan fetish that continues to destroy this country. Obama's psychotic need to rehabilitate the Republican Party continues to be an utter disaster.

And as a side note: I've heard recent praise of GW Bush and his participation in the Haitian relief efforts.

Are you fucking kidding me?!?

Look, this fucker's policies (and his cult's policies) are one of the reasons Haiti was an utter cluster fuck BEFORE the earthquake. Bush should be under a fucking prison somewhere, not dragged out by Obama to shiny up his horrible past by attempting to make him look like some kind of goddamn statesman. It's like trotting out Timothy McVeigh's corpse to assist with donations to the families killed on the Ok. City bombing.

The man is horrible. And if Kanye has been correct about anything ever.... Bush doesn't give a rats ass about black people, brown people, and, hell, the only white people are rich white people. Fuck Bush Forever.

The only positive I could ever attribute to that SOB is that he got his policies enacted come hell or high water. He passed shit with 51 votes and never had more than 55.

Meanwhile, in Pussyville......

Democrats’ talking points: We can’t pass legislation anymore, despite majority | Raw Story:

"What's more, they've decided to outline their case to the public through a set of talking points issued to Democrats after Tuesday's election upset in Massachusetts.

Their meme? 'It is mathematically impossible for Democrats to pass legislation on our own.'"

Eschaton:

"Shorter Dems

With large majorities in the House and the Senate, and control of the executive branch, we are utterly powerless to do anything.

I'm starting to think these people have no idea what they're doing."
I don't think they know what they are doing either.

_______

Obama should just raise a goddamn white flag outside the White House instead of the American flag.

Fucking pitiful.

Weak and wrong.

Obama, allies now seek pared-down health care bill - Yahoo! News:

"WASHINGTON – Chastened by the Democratic Senate loss in Massachusetts, President Barack Obama and congressional allies signaled Wednesday they may try to scale back his sweeping health care overhaul in an effort to at least keep parts of it alive.
_______

Increasingly out of touch.

I'm not sure if this is by choice or if his staff are keeping him in some type of bubble, but it is apparent that Rahm/Messina and Geitner/Sumners et all need to fucking go and quick.

If Obama had a lick of sense he'd swallow his pride and bring in Howard Dean to run the WH.

Daily Kos: Barack Obama is out of touch.:

"Barack Obama conveyed to Robert Gibbs that he was surprised and frustrated by the Massachusetts race.

One question to our president, 'Are you hiding under a rock?'

This utter statement speaks VOLUMES of Barack Obama.

It says to me, as a friend wrote to me in an email:

What Obama said through Gibbs was that he was 'Surprised and Frustrated' about this election.

What does that say?

'Surprised' = I wasn't listening to the voters

'Frustrated' = Don't blame me"
_______

Seriously. I would be enjoying a Public Option right now.

Dean: Bush would have had healthcare a long time ago | Raw Story:

"Howard Dean seems to be sick of Democrats' bipartisan attitude.

In sharply worded comments Tuesday night following the loss of former Sen. Ted Kennedy's (D-MA) Senate seat, the former chairman of the Democratic Party asserted that party leaders needed to bypass their quest for sixty Senate votes.

“We’ve got to be tougher,' Dean quipped. 'I’ve said the Democrats are not tough enough. Bush would have had the health care bill done a long time ago. He would have gone through reconciliation.”"

_______

Daily Kos: It's time to put Howard Dean back in charge

This'll be a short diary, but I'm about to scream right now and have to vent. Howard Dean is a winner. He understands exactly what the average Democrat stands for and votes for. He also understands exactly how disgusting the right-wing and the Republican Party are. He's not afraid to spread the truth about the right, and if that truth happens to hurt a few wittle wight-wing feewings, well, TOO FUCKING BAD.

What we have now are people that are afraid of their own shadows, let alone the Goddamn Republicans. The WH and the asswipes in the Senate have been deathly afraid of offending these certifiable nutcases. I just saw Richard Wolffe saying that the WH is planning on going balls to the wall this year and is, in effect, done with putting up with the attacks from the right. A little problem there: TOO. FUCKING. LATE. We just LOST a Senate seat in Massachusetts. We couldn't get shit done with 60 votes in the Senate, what makes you think anything will be done now with 59? The bubble around the WH has made the Democratic Party unbelievably weak. Like, losing a senate seat in Massachusetts weak. Wolffe also said that the WH was "surprised" about the party discipline from the GD Republicans. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? SURPRISED? I've lived in Kansas my entire life and I could've told you on the night of Obama's win exactly how the right and the GOP were going to play this. These morons get paid how much and have direct access to the President and they were fucking surprised? Jesus! Watching five minutes of politics would tell a person living in complete isolation in fucking Siberia who and what the Republicans are and how they roll. Christ on a crouton.

_______

And the only Dems showing any kind of balls.... House Progressives.

Good for them. Obama screwed them hard. I hope they screw back just as hard.

House Liberals To Pelosi: “We Cannot Support The Senate Bill. Period.” | The Plum Line:

"In a private meeting in the Capitol just now, a dozen or more House liberals bluntly told Nancy Pelosi that there was no chance that they would vote to pass the Senate bill in its current form — making it all but certain that House Dems won’t opt for this approach, a top House liberal tells me.

“We cannot support the Senate bill — period,” is the message that liberals delivered to the Speaker, Dem Rep Raul Grijalva told me in an interview just now."

_______

And in other fucked up, the minority of white wackos are running this country news....

This is just further erosion of our Democracy, this is half of the goddamn mountain sliding into the ocean.

5-4 and Corporations are now people.

We. Are. Fucked.

Supreme Court rolls back campaign spending limits - Yahoo! News:

"WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court has ruled that corporations may spend freely to support or oppose candidates for president and Congress, easing decades-old limits on their participation in federal campaigns.

By a 5-4 vote, the court on Thursday overturned a 20-year-old ruling that said corporations can be prohibited from using money from their general treasuries to pay for their own campaign ads. The decision, which almost certainly will also allow labor unions to participate more freely in campaigns, threatens similar limits imposed by 24 states."

Drinken Poet's Dream

Travel day today. Short and sweet.

Go buy this record. You'll be glad you did.

Hubbard: Music:

" With a keen eye for observation and a wise man's knowledge, Ray Wylie Hubbard composes and performs a dozen songs that couldn't spring from anywhere else but out of his fertile Rock 'n' Roll bluesy poet-in-the-blistering-heat southern noggin. The writing and recording of A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment came on the heels of Hubbard's screenplay endeavor, which was funded and filmed with a cast of icons including Kris Kristopherson, Dwight Yoakam, and Lizzy Caplan. A weekly radio show, constant touring, and producing kept him busy, but didn't manage to steal the Texan singer/songwriter's focus. The outcome of the album is a juxtaposition of songs like 'Four Horseman Of The Apocalypse,p a fundamental Gospel piece, and 'Drunken Poet's Dream,' a co-write with Hayes Carll."

He immediately underwent treatment at the University of Southern California, but doctors admit hopes for the 73 year old are fading after the cancer spread, according to Britain's News of the World newspaper.

According to the publication, medics have informed Hopper - who has battled the disease since 2002 - that his cancer is incurable and that he may be facing his final days."

Super Commie Defender!

Who is this commie defender of our Muslim President. Why, I've never seen so liberal a hippie.

Bob Barr eats so much granola...... wait.... Bob Barr? THE Bob Barr? One of the people responsible for the hyper partisanship he now so decries below?

What a world, what a world.

Critics of Obama way off base on this one | The Barr Code

Yes — the not-so-bright, would-be terrorist from Nigeria got though international and domestic security mechanisms supposed to have stopped him long before the jerk lit his underwear afire before landing in Detroit. And yes — the incident happened during the administration of President Barack Obama. But the sniping at the president by Republicans, including former Vice President Cheney, and by conservative radio and TV commentators, borders on — if not passing into — asinine.

The criticism has included such childishness as blasting Obama for waiting a few days before making a national speech on the incident. For heaven’s sake, the president was briefed on the incident from the moment it occured; he made statements almost immediately indicating his concern and that he was being regularly briefed; he took time to gather the facts and meet with his national security team; and then he appeared publicly to give a rational, measured, but hard-hitting response. And for this, a former vice president criticizes him.

Partisanship truly has pervasively infected our political system when a reasonable, measured, factual, timely and substantive response by a president to a single security incident — the roots of which clearly indicate long-simmering problems that predated his tenure in office — is publicly blasted as irresponsible. In point of fact, those levelling such counterproductive attacks are the ones engaging in irresponsible behavior.

_______

Democrats are resigning. The sky is falling. Republicans will win 4000 seats in the house and 250 seats in the Senate.

Except not.

As The Media Lies.

The Washington Monthly

DROPPING LIKE FLIES'?.... Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) is retiring. So is Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.). And before anyone could catch their breath, Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter (D) announced he's not seeking re-election, either.

It led ABC News to report that "Democrats are dropping like flies."

It is not shaping up to be a pretty week for the Democrats. [...]

You will certainly hear a lot of talk from Republicans that Democrats are beginning to face the reality of just how tough the current political landscape looks for them and they are running for the hills.

This is, to be sure, exactly the meme Republicans want the media to embrace, and if the coverage this morning is any indication, political journalists seem anxious to comply.

But let's add a little perspective here. Quick quiz: which party has more Senate retirements so far this campaign cycle, Democrats or Republicans? Follow-up question: which party has more House retirements so far this campaign cycle, Democrats or Republicans?

If Dems are "dropping like flies," the answer should be obvious. But it's not -- in both chambers, Republican retirements, at least for now, outnumber Democratic retirements.

In the House, 14 GOP incumbents have decided not to seek re-election, while 10 Democratic incumbents have made the same announcement. Does this mean Republicans are "dropping like flies"?

In the Senate, six Republican incumbents have decided not to seek re-election, while two Democratic incumbents have made the same announcement. Is this evidence of a mass Democratic exodus?

Among governors, several incumbents in both parties are term-limited and prevented from running again, but only three Democrats who can seek re-election -- Parkinson in Kansas, Doyle in Wisconsin, and Ritter in Colorado -- have chosen not to. For Republicans, the number is four -- Douglas in Vermont, Rell in Connecticut, Crist in Florida, and Pawlenty in Minnesota. (Update: the GOP number is five if we include Palin in Alaska.)

______

Those 4000 and 250 seats will come with a large price tag.

But, certainly, Republicans have enough cash on hand.

Oh. huh.

I'll expect the news media to be all of this one.

Worst RNC cash flow in a decade - TheHill.com:
"A 2009 spending spree has left the Republican National Committee (RNC) with its worst election-year cash flow this decade.

The largest GOP party committee has $8.7 million in the bank heading into an election year with 37 governors’ races, a dozen major Senate contests, dozens more in the House and an all-important redistricting cycle on the horizon.

Said one RNC official: “It is very troubling, and the thing is, most people don’t understand this. But it is really troubling.”"
_______

I expect the new media to remedy the ACORN witch hunt.

Who am I kidding.

Ain't no money in rectifying wrongs.

Extra, Extra--Read All About ACORN:

"Indeed, the CRS report--requested in September by House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers and House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank--finds no instances in which ACORN 'violated the terms of federal funding in the last five years,' and no instances of individuals allegedly registered to vote improperly by ACORN 'attempting to vote at the polls.'

Good to see that the New York Times ran the story. But the placement and the timing--after 18 months of screaming headlines and attacks vilifying the anti-poverty group--is reminiscent of the McCarthy era when individuals and organizations were ruined by allegations that ran as front page news, while later evidence that vindicated them was relegated to the back pages. There was little accountability for the false accusations, little redemption for those whose lives had been shattered."

A "new McCarthyism" is seen in the manner in which guilt by association has been pursued by the likes of Glenn Beck and "mainstream" GOP leadership (if there is such a thing). A report by People for the American Way describes, for example, how "attacks on widely respected judicial nominee David Hamilton treated his one-month job as a canvasser for ACORN thirty years ago when he was 22 years old as if it had constituted a major portion of his career."

The Alabama Crimson Tide, National Champions for the 13th time!

Roll Tide Roll!!!!

BCS Championship Game: Alabama Crimson Tide's thunderous hits struck the Texas Longhorns - ESPN:
"PASADENA, Calif. -- Nick Saban's rise to the top of the college football world has been built one thunderous tackle at a time. The wins have kept coming because the hits have kept coming, whether Saban was coaching in Baton Rouge or Tuscaloosa.

His defenses don't just shut offenses down. They beat offenses up."

'I cracked my ribs in the third quarter against Florida,' McElroy said outside the locker room. 'Two of them -- the ninth and the 10th. Left side. It's bad. I got it numbed up before the game and it was killing me at halftime.'"

Moore ready to erect Saban’s statue | TideSports.com | The Tuscaloosa News | Tuscaloosa, AL

Crooks Have Deep Pockets

I'll keep hammering the bolded point below until my fingers bleed.

A good 60% of Democrats need to learn this.

Hell needs to be raised. Always.

"Good enough" and "We'll fix it later" need to banished from all Democrats lexicon.

AMERICAblog News:

"In other words, it's appearing increasingly likely that the House-Senate conference, the meeting that was supposed to 'save' the public option, now isn't going to happen at all. The top liberal in the House has expressed his 'concern' that the conference is fading fast. The thing is, 'concern' doesn't really cut it in this town. As Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson have shown all too clearly, you get what you want by raising hell and by being wiling to walk away from the table. Nobody fears someone who is 'concerned.'"
_______

Assuredly a surge in Buddhist converts is imminent.

Really, is there any more debate that FAUX is nothing more than the Christian-Republican Loon-Ass Propaganda channel?

Hume is a supposed 'news anchor'.

The Washington Monthly
O'Reilly asked a reasonably good question: "Was that proselytizing?"

"I don't think so," Hume said, before reiterating his comments from Sunday that Woods should convert to Christianity.

Hume said that given Woods problems, he "needs something that Christianity, especially, provides, and gives and offers." That includes, he said, the chance for "redemption and forgiveness." Later in the segment, Hume said: "I think that Jesus Christ offers Tiger Woods something that Tiger Woods badly needs."

I suspect for Fox News, dictionaries suffer from liberal biases, but "proselytize" isn't a word burdened by nuance. It means "to induce someone to convert to one's faith." For Hume to deny that he was proselytizing on the air is absurd. That Fox News considers this incident consistent with its professional standards tells us all we need to know about the so-called "news" network.

I've been trying to think of a way to frame this in a way Hume's far-right defenders would understand. How about this -- imagine if, after David Vitter's (R-La.), John Ensign's (R-Nev.), and Mark Sanford's (R-S.C.) humiliating sex scandals, a Buddhist media personality appeared on national television and said Christianity is clearly inadequate, and that the right-wing Republicans' lives could get back on track if they'd give up their faith and embraced Buddhism. The Buddhist said this during a news program, and later insisted his/her comments did not constitute "proselytizing."

Is there any doubt that Christians would expect that media figure to be promptly fired? Would conservatives defend the Buddhist's remarks?

I ponder going to law school just to be able to do stuff like this.

Ben Pavone, California Lawyer, Refuses To Pay Bank Of America Credit Card, Threatens To Sue:
"Ben Pavone told Bank of America in a letter last week that he refuses to pay off his credit card debt until the bank lowers his interest rate. And, he added, if they try to ruin his credit, he'll sue 'em.

'They've got to have some kind of obligation to not totally extort the public,' said Pavone.

The San Diego, Calif. attorney is angry about two things: his interest rate, which has gone up to 27.99 percent, and his credit limit, which has gone down to just above his balance. 'I'm sure I'm going to be hit with penalties,' he said."
