Golden Gate Bridge

Duuuude! Coming back to work suuuuuucks. A necessary suck, though. (fucking lottery)

I spent yesterday strolling through downtown San Francisco snapping some photos.

I left my heart.....

A couple of hearts in Union Square.

Speaking of leaving your heart in San Francisco, I watched the documentary The Bridge this weekend. A guy filmed the Golden Gate Bridge everyday for a year in 2004. 24 people killed themselves by jumping off the bridge that year. The documentary is about those people. Be forewarned, you do see people jump. 220 feet, 120 miles per hour, a 4 second fall.

That one has fucked me up for the past few days... especially since I live so close to the bridge and ride my bike across it often.

Put it on the top of you NetFlix if you haven't seen it.

Also, check out Patterson Hood's new song, The Golden Gate Bridge. Here's the first verse:

You can run but it’s still gonna getcha
It ain’t nice to fool mother nature
You can hide but she’ll sniff you out
She knows what those demons are lying about
And it’s another late night all alone in here

I’m wide awake and nearly out of beer
It’s seeping in through the cracks in the curtain
Deny all you want but you know it’s for certain
It’s time for some stomping and banging
Leave all you want but don’t leave a man hanging
A shiny car and some really nice digs
Another man’s jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge......

Why do we live in a town where the smartest have no power and the stupidest run everything? Maybe I should just move back to Alabama.

Dr. Hibbert, in The Simpsons

Ala. Terror Web Site Angers Activists:

"MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Alabama Department of Homeland Security has taken down a Web site it operated that included gay rights and anti-war organizations in a list of groups that could include terrorists.

The Web site identified different types of terrorists, and included a list of groups it believed could spawn terrorists. The list also included environmentalists, animal rights advocates and abortion opponents."

Angry Atheists Are Hot Authors

While I am excited that atheist authors are selling books these days, the beginning of this article is a prime example of why I stay pissed off at the MSM and their lazy fucking "journalism".

The time for polite debate is over. Militant, atheist writers are making an all-out assault on religious faith and reaching the top of the best-seller list, a sign of widespread resentment over the influence of religion in the world among nonbelievers.
Look, just because my people are starting to speak up it doesn't make us 'militant' nor are with 'making an all-out assault on religious faith'.

What kind of lazy, cheap, half-assed writing is that? Fuck, that shit pisses me off.

We atheist are the least militant, least assaulting folks in the world.

Hey, we don't have a war going on with anybody right now. My religious brethren can't say the same.

"The war metaphor is apt. The writers see themselves in a battle for reason in a world crippled by superstition. In their view, Muslim extremists, Jewish settlers and Christian right activists are from the same mold, using fairy tales posing as divine scripture to justify their lust for power. Bad behavior in the name of religion is behind some of the most dangerous global conflicts and the terrorist attacks in the U.S., London and Madrid, the atheists say.

As Hitchens puts it: 'Religion kills.'"

Playing chicken with a trolley

Very cool, if you haven't checked this out yet. I found both of my Granddads.

Ancestry.com Puts 90M War Records Online:

"For every generation in this country there has been a war. And with wars come millions of records that can shed light on family history, detailing everything from the color of soldiers' eyes to what their neighbors may have said about them.

On Thursday, Ancestry.com unveils more than 90 million U.S. war records from the first English settlement at Jamestown in 1607 through the Vietnam War's end in 1975. The site also has the names of 3.5 million U.S. soldiers killed in action, including 2,000 who died in Iraq."

Yeah, well, I've heard whispers that there is a grouper and a dolphin that are swimming around with a mighty guilty look on their faces. Something about a full moon party and a 3-way.....

Might not be as immaculate as first thought.

Scientists report virgin shark birth:

"DUBLIN, Ireland (AP) -- Female sharks can fertilize their own eggs and give birth without sperm from males, according to a new study of the asexual reproduction of a hammerhead in a U.S. zoo.

The joint Northern Ireland-U.S. research, being published Wednesday in the Royal Society's peer-reviewed Biology Letter journal, analyzed the DNA of a shark born in 2001 in the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska.

The shark was born in a tank with three potential mothers, none of whom had contact with a male hammerhead for at least three years. (Watch why researchers say this is not a good sign Video)
Here's the best part....

The baby was killed within hours of its birth by a stingray in the same tank. Analysis of its DNA found no trace of any chromosomal contribution from a male partner.
God, stingrays are dicks, aren't they.

JPW---Great blog today. Being pissed at being back at work brings out the best in you. Was going to send you that Alabama terrorist article yesterday, but forgot. Getting ever more senile. I turn 59 tomorrow. I look forward to copiuous and large presents from you and all your readers. As always, I agree totally to what you and your articles say about religion (=mythology). I think of anyone who believes in invisible beings and voices as lunatics. Atheists don't hate/kill people who are not atheists, though I must admit that I am not a big fan of lunatics, but that is not the same as hating or killing. They do make good joke fodder, though there is nothing funny about the suffering and death they cause.
