Again, we routed ourselves out, stopping on the way to play a festival in Louisville, KY. The Forcastle Festival is an annual thing there. I think we played it ourselves back in 2002. We Love Music (and Photos): Drive-By Truckers at 9:30 Club We Love DC:
"Around 10:00 Friday night, Drive-By Truckers strolled out onto the 9:30 Club stage. Singer Patterson Hood raised his arms, puffed out his chest, and screamed: “Goddammit, I feel GOOD.” By 1 a.m., Hood and his fans were drenched in sweat twice over, the band was wrapping up a raucous cover of punk hero Jim Carroll’s “People Who Died,” and “good” had become an understatement of epic proportions for the way the night felt."

Then, listen to Native New Yorker:

Booker T. Jones: HuffPost Premiere: "Native New Yorker"

You're welcome.

_______

Why can't paid 'journalist' do just a little bit of research. Few people would associate DBT with soul music? Really? Soul is the teat from whence they suckled as babes.

WHEN I'M 64: BOOKER T. JONES:

"Two years ago, Booker T. Jones went to South by Southwest and ended up performing with his old band and connecting with a new one. After playing a showcase with the MG's—the Stax Records house band that backed Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and others and became famous for instrumentals like 'Green Onions'—Booker met a member of the group that would back him on his first solo album in almost two decades.

The band he found is one that few would associate with soul music: the Drive-By Truckers.

'I knew I wanted that attitude before I found the band,' Booker, 64, says over a glass of red wine at a bar in Manhattan's East Village. 'This album has a lot to do with attitude. The MG's were never an in-your-face band—the MG's is a groove band. But this is in your face, this raw, gritty sound that's too loud.'"

Turn off the shuffle: 25 great albums that work best when listened to from start to finish | Music | A.V. Club:

"24. Drive-By Truckers, Southern Rock Opera (2001)
Neo-Southern-rock act Drive-By Truckers had only two obscure indie records and one incendiary live album under their belts when they decided to swing for the fences. Raising money from a group of colleagues and fans, the band recorded the double-disc Southern Rock Opera, a sprawling meditation on redneck identity politics and how the looming specter of mortality makes life—and rock ’n’ roll—more meaningful. Though less song-oriented than the DBT albums before and after it, Southern Rock Opera is no less fiery, and it contains some of Patterson Hood’s most personal reflections on how he’s come to embrace his Southern heritage while rejecting some of its more negative connotations. In the spoken-word piece “The Three Great Alabama Icons,” Hood weaves together his personal histories with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bear Bryant, and George Wallace into a complex statement on prejudice that’s like a rock ’n’ roll version of Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel Persepolis. Like the album as a whole, it’s storytelling on a much higher plane than most shit-kicker rock bands ever aspire to."

Tuscaloosa Trifecta: Dexateens, Cecil Hurt, and Deontay Wilder - TideSports.com

I'm not sure if you guys are really paying attention, but Tuscaloosa is on a roll.

Immediately you think I'm talking about UA athletics. Sure, it's easy to point to the football program and use it as a shining example with a recent undefeated regular season and back-to-back No. 1 recruiting classes. You don't have to look much further to bring up an SEC Championship in gymnastics, a top 5 showing in softball, a baseball team that simply mashes the pea, a golf prodigy committing to Alabama, and an obvious attempt at scoring a hot commodity as a men's head basketball coach. Anthony Grant or not, Mal Moore and Co. have made their statement.

But something else has risen from the soil of Tuscaloosa featuring three local staples that speaks volumes to where T-Town is in the whole order of things.

I'm talking about the Dexateens, our own Cecil Hurt, and bronze medal-winning boxer Deontay Wilder coming together for a few minutes of video utopia.

On May 12, the Dexateens release their latest album "Singlewide," and put together a little promotional video at Skyy Boxing featuring the members of the band, Cecil, and Deontay. You can find it on YouTube, TideSports, Tuscaloosanews.com, and right here in this little blog here.

Talk about a combined representation of sheer awesome. Really look closely at it. You've got a local band quite possibly on the cusp of taking the leap to national recognition (good luck, fellas), a local Olympic hero on the path to professional boxing success, and a well-known, well-respected, local sports authority that has been a cornerstone of The Tuscaloosa News sports department since 1982. It's the true Tuscaloosa trifecta.

The more I watch it, the more I absolutely love it. So I will share this with you. I will also add a couple more video items for your perusal ... one a T-News product following Deontay's Olympic journey and the other a terrific Dexateens music video shot at the Capitol School.

Dangerous Highway - Eddie Hinton

One of the beauties of doing this blog are the folks that I get to meet through the intertubes.

Earlier this week I received an email from a 'Buttholeville refugee' named Deryle Perryman. Deryle has produced a documentary on Eddie Hinton that is getting play at various film festivals across the country.

Deryle currently resides in (left turn at...) Albuquerque, New Mexico where he is the CEO of a non-profit youth development organization called the Cornstalk Institute.

So let's do a quick tally: (1) From Buttholeville but got the hell out. (2) Before he left was infected with the music fever that seems to grab a lot of us Buttholeville expats (3) produced a documenatry on Eddie Hinton (4) Created a non-profit that helps kids.

Yeah, Deryle is good people. Damn good people.

If you aren't familiar with Eddie Hinton then you might just be a newbie to DBT and the various artist in the DBT solar system.

Sandwiches for the Road was written by Patterson about Eddie Hinton. Also, if you've been to a DBT concert then you have most assuredly heard some Hinton because The Matador, Matt D (DBT's most excellent sound man) always, ALWAYS plays some Hinton for pre-show music.

I'll let the pros tell you more about Eddie and the doc. Below are some blurbs, links and pictures that Deryle forwarded to me:

Eddie's passport photo

SF Film Festival: Living - and dying - dangerously
"According to Deryle Perryman — who made Dangerous Highway with his Albuquerque neighbor Moises Gonzalez — some of the people interviewed were not above romanticizing their subject or stretching the truth, but most of the more outrageous stories about Hinton’s erratic behavior wound up on the cutting-room floor. Eddie’s mother wasn’t happy about broadcasting her son’s troubles with alcohol and drugs to the world, let alone acknowledging that he had further emotional problems. Consequently, the finished film does its best to sidestep the severity of Eddie’s demons, though the point is not lost."

_______

Chicago Reader: Music Reviews:
The Godfather of Blue-Eyed Soul
"It’s too late for Hinton to get the recognition he deserved, but there’s still plenty of time for people to discover his music. Thanks in part to a small army of dedicated proselytizers—Gonzalez and Perryman, Peter Thompson at Zane Records, even southern rockers the Drive-By Truckers (“Sandwiches for the Road,” on their 1998 debut album, is a tribute to Hinton)—his reputation is still growing. Last year the Australian label Raven released the first-ever career-spanning Hinton collection, A Mighty Field of Vision: The Anthology 1969-1993, and Zane is prepping a fourth disc in its series of songwriting demos. Connecticut author and musician Jonathan Kehew is working on a biography, and Dangerous Highway is scheduled to screen at several film festivals this summer and fall before arriving on DVD. Maybe before Dylan finishes the second volume of his Chronicles—reportedly in the works—he’ll see fit to put in a good word or two for an old soul singer he used to know."

_______
The movie is narrated by musician Robert Cray, an avid Eddie Hinton fan and a player cut from the same musical mold. The cast of most-interesting talking heads includes producer Jerry Wexler, Muscle Shoals bandmated Jimmie Johnson and David Hood, keyboardist Chuck Leavell, bluesman Jimmy Thackery, the Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood, and songwriters Donnie Fritts and Bill Blackburn
______

"Duane Allman invited Hinton to become a charter member of the Allman Brothers Band. Hinton turned Allman down, however. He fell in with the players at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and was soon invited to join the fabled studio’s house band. The list of artists Hinton worked with as a sideman, songwriter, or producer includes Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Cher, Waylon Jennings, Boz Scaggs, Lulu, Herbie Mann, Otis Redding, Little Richard, The Box Tops, Percy Sledge, Tom Jones, Wilson Pickett, and Dusty Springfield — the roster is breathtaking."
_______

From a self-taught guitar player who played on over 200 albums and wrote hundreds of songs to recording with the London Symphony Strings to living in a rescue mission, Eddie Hinton may be the greatest unknown musician you've never heard. The Muscle Shoals singer-songwriter wrote, produced, arranged and played for legends like Elvis Presley, the Staples Singers, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Dusty Springfield, Jimmy Cliff and UB40. DANGEROUS HIGHWAY features Jerry Wexler, Donnie Fritts, Dick Cooper, Jimmy Johnson, David Hood, Chuck Leavell, Paul Hornsby, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, Patterson Hood, Jimmy
_______

Aztec Graphics - Rob Malik

When I put up the first post of the Thanksgiving Alabama Theatre DBT show, I highlighted folks that were part of the DBT family that we could all support by purchasing their products, using their services, or supporting their artistic endeavors. I believe my exact quote was, "'These are just a few members of the DBT family we can support with our referrals, dollars and clicks."

I left someone out of that post and have been meaning to highlight him and his business for the past 2 months now and it has just slipped my feable ass mind to do so. I'll correct that bit of stupidity today:

Rob Malik owns Aztec Graphics out of New Jersey and he is the man that does most of DBT's merch. Recently Rob donated the t-shirts for 'Songs of Adam's Housecat!' benefit show for Sabina Hartley-Burke.

If my endorsement isn't good enough, well, then Jenn Bryant called Rob and Aztec Graphics "the best little t-shirt shop in the world..."

Helps out the DBT.... Helps out kids in need.... Again, damn good people.

Check out Rob's website and throw some business his way. Keep it in the family!

DBT Lyrics Tour - Ronnie and Neil

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Wilson Pickett comes to town
To record that sweet soul music, to get that Muscle Shoals sound

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Aretha Franklin comes to town
To record that sweet soul music, to get that Muscle Shoals sound

One morning before I headed out to take some pictures for this series I picked up the TimesDaily over breakfast and was greeted with the following article:

Webster Has Plans for Studio:
In 1999, Webster purchased the nondescript stone building at 3614 Jackson Highway, the original home of Muscle Shoals Sound Studios.

He restored the studio, going as far as replacing the original sound and recording equipment down to the very model numbers.

The building has also been nominated for inclusion in the National Record of Historic Places.
...

'It will be themed around Muscle Shoals Sound.'
I decided to make the original Muscle Shoals Sound Studio my first stop for the day. I had planned on snapping a few quick pictures of the front of the building before moving on to some other Colbert County/DBT landmarks. When my dad and I pulled up to the Studio, Noel Webster was standing outside directing a bulldozer that was clearing a spot next to the studio that will be the outdoor theatre. I introduced myself and told him what I was doing. He invited my dad and I to come inside the studio and check things out. When we walked in the back door Noel flipped the light switch and the sound system started playing "Wild Horses" by the Stones. Noel started to show us around and, honestly, we could have spent a couple of days in the place in order to see everything. It was, to say the least, stunning the amount of history this small, ex-casket factory, contained. I would calculate that Billions of dollars worth of music was created and produced here. Noel pulled out pictures, album covers, framed pieces of the old wall that had signatures on it from artist all the while spitting historical tid-bits in his rapid-fire manner of speech. I was so enthralled that I had to force myself to take some pictures along the way. Before we left, Noel asked my dad and I if we wanted to see something that no one had seen since the '70's. We said "Of Course" and Noel went to the basement and returned with the old ledger books that contained the dates and dollar amounts charged to the artists who worked there. L.S, Aretha, Bob Seger, Wilson Pickett, Rod Stewart and a host of others were contained in these ledgers. It was amazing.

Noel told us about Dylan walking down to the river bottom and chatting with the local fishermen who had no idea who he was. Hard to imagine... He showed us a great picture of Duane Allman buck nekkid standing in the woods behind the studio. He told us so many stories that I'll probably update this post as I remember them...

I won't go into the detailed history of this place and the players. The links below supply a history more comprehensive than anything that I could state. You can check out who recorded at FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound.

I want to the Noel for being so gracious and for a tour of a lifetime.

Let's head on back to Muscle Shoals Sound

The First home of the Swampers aka the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, David Hood, Jimmy Johnson, Donny Short, Roger Hawkins and Barry Beckett.

Meanwhile in North Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd came to town
To record with Jimmy Johnson at Muscle Shoals Sound

Click on this pick to see what Skynyrd had written on a door.

They have an entire wall in the studio that's been covered with plexiglass. This one tile has the names Annette Snell and Jerry Powell. Noel told the story that Annette had died in a plane crash a few days after she signed the wall. Jimmy Johnson's brother was on that plane and perished too.

The other name is Jerry Powell. Noel said he was connected with Skynyrd. Notice the date, Oct. 19, 1977. This was the day before that fateful plane crash in the Louisiana swamps that killed Ronnie and the others. I haven't been able to find anything that connects Jerry with Skynyrd other than having the last name as Billy. Still... erie.

Annette Snell: ...Annette cut the brilliant "Its All Over Now"/"Promises Should Never Be Broken" at Muscle Sholas before her tragic death in an air crash on her way back to Alabama....

Bob Se"a"ger. Who ever wrote it misspelled his name.

The Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" was written in this bathroom.

"Another attraction was that the studio's small-town location was far away from big-city distractions and prying eyes. "The town never impinged upon anyone," says Wexler, recalling a day when the Rolling Stones ordered breakfast at the local Howard Johnson's. "One little waitress said, 'Are you a group?' One of the members said, 'Yeah, we're a group. We're Martha and the Vandellas.'"
