'Drive-By Truckers' on roll for show | Philadelphia Inquirer | 12/31/2010

No Expiration - a blog about timeless music: THE DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS AT BKLYN BOWL - LET THERE BE ROCK!:
"I have seen the present of rock and roll, and it is The Drive-By Truckers. I'm not even kidding. They're not punk, metal, 'alternative,' 'indie' or anything else. They are rock and roll. There aren't too many bands like that today."
_______

No Depression Readers Poll and Featured Bloggers' Favorite Albums of 2010 - Americana and roots music - No Depression:
"From those entries, we compiled a giant masterlist and plugged the top 100-or-so most-listed albums into a polling widget. As it turned out, the widget was imperfect - it only allowed one vote at a time, and raised some questions about voting consistency and the widget's reliability. Some members of this community noted the widget seemed to be getting 'stuffed' by fans of artists who encouraged their Facebook friends and Twitter followers to vote for their album. While this struck us as frustrating at first, we figured we may as well throw those gates open and make it a free-for-all. In an effort to see what would happen if many of the artists listed in that Top 100 (or so) list leveraged their fanbases, Kyla sent emails to the management and labels of as many artists for whom she had contacts, encouraging them to also post a link on Facebook and Twitter. Some of them joined in the fun, others didn't. In the end, the results of that round of polling seemed to more adequately reflect the ability and interest of several artists to leverage their social media presence and ignite the enthusiasm of their fans."

11 Picks For Early 2011 - Americana and roots music - No Depression:
"Drive By Truckers: Go Go Boots. On the heels, literally of The Big To-Do, The Truckers are kicking of 2011 with a bang. They are returning with a new album, a band documentary called The Secret To A Happy Ending, and embarking on an upcoming tour. Go Go Boots has been described as a 'country meets rhythm and blues' kind of album. Check out Bettye LaVette's excellent Scene Of The Crime, which featured the Truckers as LaVette's backing band, and you'll get an idea of where this is going. (2/15/2011)"

Dexateens

Singles Reviews: Dexateens, Cass McCombs, David Ball | American Songwriter:
"Dexateens – “Granddaddy’s Mouth”

An overcast tone sometimes still harbors a little optimism at the core. A pedal steel’s heartbroken whine is comforted by Elliott McPherson’s reassuring voice in a song that tries and fails to be modest. The Dexateens “can’t explain granddaddy’s mouth,” just like you can’t explain the subtle beauty of the song, but it’s there."

_______

A Valentine's Day To-Do - see the Drive-By Truckers in Knoxville:
"'In the studio is when we typically have a really good time,” Cooley said. 'Going out and touring is fun, and we really get off on it, but it's the job — or at least, for us it's the closest we get to a grind. But when we're looking for something new, going into the studio and getting to hang out with each other without all of the soundchecks and this and that is something we look forward to. Because if you write songs, your favorite song is always the next one.'"

"“Once you get to that bridge, sometimes it's a lot longer and shakier and sometimes made out of rope. But you've got to get across it. And once you do — once you achieve tolerance — you can get back to all of the respect and chemistry and natural things that make it happen in the first place."

Movie review: 'The Secret to a Happy Ending' features the Drive-By Truckers - washingtonpost.com:
"'The Secret to a Happy Ending' doesn't strictly obey the rules of the very genre it belongs to. Made by an unabashed fan, what it might lack in hard-nosed inquiry it makes up in conveying the ardor and near messianic belief that have made Drive-By Truckers a cult sensation."
_______

"....but it got canceled".

The Secret to a Happy Ending at the AFI Silver Theatre - Arts & Events - Washington City Paper:
"The documentary will probably present DBT in three different ways: DBT as the obvious heirs to Skynyrd’s “triple-threat” guitar section; DBT as real folk who still hang out in Athens, even though they’re famous; and DBT as manly men who dry themselves with cheetah pelts. If you doubt these truths, take your beef to Cooley and Patterson—they’ll be waiting for you at AFI."

Brent Best/Slobberbone

Bandwagon: Over the Wires : Brent Best:

"I suppose I should just get the obvious one out of the way first. I see that you're playing dates with Slobberbone and solo. Since there's been no official announcement, what does this mean for the band situation? Are The Drams still active? How's it all shaking out?

Drams are still semi-active. We just played a show last night. The idea is to do both but obviously we'll have to kinda focus on one or the other at one time and it looks like we're gonna focus on some Slobberbone stuff for now. Keith and Chad are playing and doing quite well in The King Bucks right now and with Brian back it seems like a good time to fire up Slobbebone and maybe start laying down some tracks. And then hopefully do it all again with The Drams in a year or so. I like the idea of having both and having them be very different things. Solo shows just sorta fill the cracks in between."

Muscle Shoals Sound

The Black Keys New Album Recorded At Muscle Shoals Sound Studio | The Black Keys Fan Lounge:

"There used to be some amazing regional record labels, but that all dried up. But the same talent pool is there—just no one is there to discover it. It’s the same thing with Muscle Shoals—there are talented people everywhere. I do believe that music is genetic—it’s a family thing. Whatever was magical about Muscle Shoals is still there, it’s just no one fucking cares anymore. Music now is just pop music, made by motherfuckers like Bob Rock. Motherfuckers that have wrap-around Sub Zeros and dreadlocks and a crazy ass Kurzweil keyboard. People just don’t get it."

"Hearing Donnie Fritts and Scott Boyer describe their five-show tour in Japan in October conjures up images of rock stars getting off a plane, being mobbed by autograph-hungry fans and running through train stations to make the next show.

Part of that is true - the rest is a product of my overactive imagination.

In reality, Fritts and The Decoys, two names that are well known in the Shoals but sometimes taken for granted, received the grand treatment in Japan.

Fritts said going to Japan with The Decoys was one of the best experiences of his 50-year career.

'Being accepted by the Japanese like we were was unbelievable,' he said."

"It would be easy to go on for a thousand words about drivin n cryin (in fact, when I started this review it was starting to look like I would), because theirs has been a long and complex story since singer-sonwriter Kevn Kinney and bassist/mandolinist Tim Nielsen released the first album with the band's first lineup, 1986's Scarred But Smarter. So let's boil it down. Here's what you need to know: drivin n cryin are a part southern rock, part country rock, part folk rock, and part hard rock working class band from Atlanta, GA. They like folk music as much as they like the Stooges, and Aerosmith as much as country music."

"SHEFFIELD - Jay Johnson says he knows just enough Spanish to get into trouble, but he's not going to let his limitations keep him from taking on the challenge of learning a Mexican rock song.

The song and maybe a couple of other rock songs that are popular south of the border will appear on an album featuring Johnson and guitarist Brian Flynn, a Colorado native who has spent the past 15 years living and playing music in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Johnson, son of Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section founder Jimmy Johnson, and Flynn began recording the untitled album at Jimmy Johnson's Sheffield studio in mid-September.

The guitarists were joined in the studio by Flynn's friend and bassist, John June, and Shoals drummer, John Blumer, who played with Johnson in the popular local act, Radio Tokyo, in the 1980s.

Several other noted musicians, including former 38 Special guitarist Jeff Carlisi and one-time Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Mike Estes, also are expected to be involved in the project."

Aquarium Drunkard: Music Blog  Jim Carroll :: August 1, 1950 — September 11, 2009:

"The Drive-by Truckers have long made “People Who Died” a staple of their live shows. If you go back to 1999’s sadly out-of-print Alabama Ass Whuppin’, the early line-up of the band tears through the song with abandon. Muddling the verse order, and shuffling and adjusting lyrics as he goes, Patterson Hood’s delivery of the song is a howling maelstrom of grief. There are times where his vocals become muttered and incoherent, others where the pain is howled into the Plutonian shore. Imagining the narrator now in the small towns of the deep South, where friends are people you’ve known since you were born, not just the guy you met hustling on the street the other week, the deaths rack up in a much more serious way. As friends drop left and right, everything that seemed true is revealed in the harsh light of reality. The guitars, thick and raspy, convey something much more guttural and deeply troubling than the skittish chug of Carroll’s original. You can only take so much pain in a lifetime. Sometimes, it just can’t hurt any less. words/ j. neas"

Best Albums Of 2000’s and Best Albums Of The Decade

Drivin' N' Cryin'

I've had the pleasure of rocking out to this record for the past couple of weeks. Stellar work and worthy to add to your collection.

Stream Drivin' N' Cryin's first new album in 12 years: It's an EW exclusive! | EW.com

ATLANTA, GA - Drivin' N' Cryin' will put out their first record in twelve years. Great American Bubble Factory will be released on September 29, 2009 on Vintage Earth Music with marketing and distribution provided by Thirty Tigers/RED. "This record is the perfect crescendo to a long twenty-plus year career of the band. I think we've found the true essence of what we started to build back in 1985," says Kevn Kinney.
Drivin' N' Cryin' originally started recording demos for this album on September 10, 2001. After 9/11 the band abandoned the sessions after deciding the time wasn't right for their stories of blue-collar optimism. They returned to Sonica Studios in Atlanta earlier this year where the band produced the album in collaboration with Anton Fier, who produced their 1987 album Whisper Tames the Lion and James Barber, their ex-manager-turned-producer.

This record moves from the "Midwestern Blues" to the Flannery O'Connor South of "This Town" to the industrial grind of "Detroit City" to the optimistic anthem (and Dictators cover) "I Stand Tall" to the genuine pining for home in "I See Georgia."

The current DNC line up is: Kevn Kinney (guitar & vocals), Tim Nielsen (bass, mandolin & backing vocals), Mac Carter (guitar), Dave V. Johnson (drums, percussion & backing vocals). The band will be on tour throughout the fall, tour dates will be announced soon.

"The following series of photographs are from the first weekend in August. Lauderdale and Shotgun Lover shared bills at Speakeasy and the Alabama Music Box. We always have a blast playing shows and acting like pirates with those guys. I saw them last Friday night here at home with Doc Dailey and Magnolia Devil. It was a good show and a great reminder of my intentions to post these photos. This club circuit that we're on most weekends seems as if it's becoming the world's largest, most dysfunctional family. We're a handful of hard-working bands from all over the place who are perpetually crossing paths and closing down bars."

DBT Week in Review - 8/28/09

Lorenzo Wolff: There Ain't Much to Country Livin':

"A few years ago I heard about a band that was doing a kind of updated country-rock thing and went to seem them play Irving Plaza. They played for about an hour and half, dazzling what otherwise would have been a jaded New York crowd with their proud, aggressive songs and the brutal realism of their lyrics. After the last chord was struck and the world started spinning again, I went over to their merch booth to pick up as many of their records as I could fit in my pockets."

Centro-Matic's Pence, Johnson Share Art at Good Records | NBC Dallas-Fort Worth:

"Baseball through the eyes of Centro-matic singer/guitarist Will Johnson looks like that. On panels of wood, he paints portraits of the men who've served the beloved sport with their life stories, such as Willie Mays and Cool Papa Bell. Johnson frames their faces with words, sometimes words the players famously said and sometimes Johnson's own wide-eyed biographies of the figures.

The night before they set out to record Centro-matic's next record, Johnson and drummer Matt Pence, who's a photographer, will share their work Sunday from 7 t"
