MySpace.com Blogs - Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit MySpace Blog

Hello, folks. Having a sit-down on the new couch, watching the Braves tear up San Fran, thinking I should let you all know how things have been going lately.

First and foremost, we're very excited about the Music for Marines benefit at the Shoals Theatre Wednesday night. It's for a great cause, and Sons of Roswell and Barrelmouth will be playing with us, both bands chock full of Greenhill natives, so you should really try to come out.

My old cohorts, the Drive-By Truckers (still don't know if that hyphen should be there or not) are playing the same venue on Thursday and Friday night, and I'm really happy about the fact that they're playing a hometown show. I think it'll be great for the area and the local scene, and it could go a long way toward establishing the Theatre as a real music venue. Cheers to them, for sure. I won't be able to make those shows, much to my chagrin, as we have to leave for K.C. on Thursday evening. Ya'll go, though, and let me know how it turns out. I'm sure it'll be great.

Want to give a special thanks to Zack Gooch for joining us on last weekend's run through Colorado and Utah. He did a fantastic job and we truly had a great time hanging out and making music with him.

Our distinguished guitarist, Browan, has a website up now for his incredible artwork, www.browanlollar.com, and I strongly suggest you check it out. He has some great stuff, and his paintings are pretty good, too, if you know what I mean.

On the personal front, I just finished a move back across the river to Sheffield, and I'm very happy about the living quarters. I'm sure to be playing a ton of pool when I'm home, so if you're game, come join me at the room. You know the one, I'm sure. Just make sure you bring enough dough to cover your losses (or your bar tab). I got stiffed last week, and I'm still pissed about it.

We're smack dab in the middle of the W.C. Handy Blues festival, so I may be out this week, sitting in with some friends. I'll try to remember to put a notice up on Twitter regarding where I'll be in case anybody wants to come see. Happy summer to everybody.

MySpace.com Blogs - Dexateens MySpace Blog

About three months ago, something questionable happened on campus at the University of Alabama.

In a nutshell, a white fraternity paraded past a black sorority house as the women were taking part in an alumni celebration. The element in question is the fact that the fraternity members were marching with rebel flags and confederate war uniforms, all in the name of what the fraternity calls an “old south” celebration.

I have been waiting to see if the university would reprimand the fraternity before I tore into my premeditated rant. The fraternity has issued a public apology, but to my knowledge, this appears to have been pushed under the rug by the University of Alabama. I also think it is important to note that UGA and Auburn have in years past either eliminated or scaled back their Greek “old south” celebrations due to similar circumstances.

I love the University of Alabama, and I love the south. It disgusts me to see that MSNBC picked up on this story and once again, Alabama, specifically the University, is in the spot light of racial insensitivity.

The Associated Press: Jackson Browne, Republicans settle case:

"LOS ANGELES — Sen. John McCain and the Republican Party are apologizing to Jackson Browne for using one of his songs during last year's presidential campaign.

The GOP is also vowing to get artists' permission before using musicians' work in future political campaigns.

The apology and pledge were released Tuesday along with an announcement of a settlement with Browne over a federal copyright infringement lawsuit filed last year in Los Angeles. Browne sued McCain and the national and Ohio Republican parties for using part of his song 'Running on Empty' to mock Democrat Barack Obama's proposed energy policies in a Web ad.

Financial details of the settlement weren't disclosed."

Beastie Boy Adam Yauch has cancer; tour canceled, album pushed back (Backstage Pass) - Newsday.com:

"The Beastie Boys have cancelled all their upcoming tour dates, including their headlining spot at the All Points West Festival next week, and pushed back their 'Hot Sauce Committee Part 1' album, after Adam Yauch was diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland.

In a video statement (below) released this morning, Yauch said the cancer is treatable and will not affect his voice. He will have surgery next week to remove the tumor and will need several weeks of further treatment.

'It's a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because I was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later,' Yauch said in a statement.

No word yet from All Points West organizers on how the cancellation will be handled."

DBT Week in Review - 1-19-07

Y'all. I've updated the blog a bit. You'll notice it mostly on the links sidebar on the right.

Starting with my Lyric of the Week. What ever is stuck in my head or has been guiding through another week of drudgery will be posted there every Friday. I'm up for suggestions, so feel free to leave a comment.

DBT related links have been updated including some new additions.

I've fleshed out the music links with new additions.

Check out the 'Blogs' etc. Some new stuff their, too.

You also may notice that 'tags' or 'labels' have been added to each post. These are catalogued on the right side. I've been trying to use purely DBT lyric references as my tags. Examples:

Goddamn Reagan from PPOTM = Republicans
Why Henry Drinks = Anytime I link to anything booze related.
Buttholeville = anytime I mention Florence/The Shoals.

This is a work in progress and only a few months worth of posts have these tags.

Again, I'm open to suggestions so if a DBT lyric comes to mind for a certain tag, leave me a comment or shoot me an email.

The Drams

Speaking or touring, The Drams kicked off their tour with Will Hoge two days ago. They'll be in San Luis Obisbo, CA and San Francisco next weekend. You can be assured that I'll be at those shows. Pictures and reviews to follow.

Also, it looks like the Drams will get a 60-70 minute set instead of 45 minutes due to Marah backing out. I would of loved to have seen Marah, but, oh well, more Drams for me!

"The Oakland band Maldroid is writing a blueprint for how independent bands can get quick record company attention in the YouTube age. And they didn't even have to play a gig first.

The 9-month-old band won a contest for best video on the video-sharing Web site in November. That recognition landed them their first public appearance -- on 'Good Morning America.' Just come to New York for an interview, fellas. Leave the instruments at home.

Total price of Maldroid's video production: $30 for three videos. Most of the money went toward hot dogs and whiskey chugged in the recording studio."

DBT WIR - 12/22/06

A Note From Jenn:
Hey you guys, while we're on the subject of cool little kids, I have a request.

We're having an art auction for Sabina (the lil' girl with the brain tumor) that will feature some of her work - she's a pretty good artist for 7 years old!

Unfortunately, because Sabina's vision has been impeded by the tumor, she isn't able to put out very much art these days.

We've begun looking for art from other kids to be auctioned off as well. So if you have or know a kid that likes to draw, color or paint, and who would like to send in some art to be auctioned off for the Sabina fund, let me know offlist (or at jenn@...) and I'll give you the lowdown on where to send it.

Thanks so much to everyone who has donated to Sabina's fund and helped out. She's a sweet little girl to whom fate has dealt a horrible blow, and every little bit you've done has helped her and her family immensely.

-Jenn
Check out the Adams Housecat! benefit show for Sabina by Patterson, Cooley and the EZB a few weeks ago on Southern Shelter. Some great tunes on this one. My favorite is Airplane Screams. Would love to hear a studio version of that song.

Here's some news of other bands that ranked highly on the DBT Yahoo List Top 10 Albums of the Year:

slackercountry.com The Drams “Jubilee Dive” (Finally gets reviewed…):
""Des Moines” proves Brent still has the songwriting chops- for those of you who think he’s gone soft - a song about trying to connect with a significant other on a cell phone that drops the call:

“What a fool I was to trust
Words so critical to say
To a wireless phone call
From 800 miles away”

He then takes the familiar (and oh-so-annoying) marketing slogan “Can you hear me now?” and turns it into a desperate and frustrated plea

The Hold Steady made a major showing on the Top 10 list and they've been influenced by DBT apparently

Jay Steele via Yahoo Group

Pitchfork Feature: Interview: The Hold Steady:
"Craig Finn: Yeah, I have to say we probably played that up a little bit early just to get an angle. But one of the things when we started playing was that it sounded really sweet because we were going out to the bars and hearing 'House of Jealous Lovers' every night. It's a great song; I don't dislike that music as much as I may have said I did at the time. But what happened at that time in New York is what always happens. You had a couple of great bands: Liars, Rapture, whatever. And then they started to get co-opted. You'd go out to see a band at Mercury Lounge, and then the two bands before that would be disco-punk. I think taking a contrarian position is kind of like selling short in the stock market; you're like, 'I bet people are going to really like this, if we play some loose rock'n'roll.' I think if it's a reaction against anything, it's a reaction against everything in indie rock that just isn't fun. I've said this in other interviews, but this kid said that he went to all these shows that year and us and the Drive-By Truckers were the only two bands that smiled. I thought that's a bad thing. It's a sad state of affairs if that's true."

In other music news:

Aging rockers set to lose rights on early hits:
"LONDON (Reuters) - When finance minister Gordon Brown stands up to make his pre-budget speech next week, aging rockers Cliff Richard, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones might do well to tune in.

Not normally the stuff of rock'n'roll, Wednesday's address looks set to reject music industry calls for an extension of copyright on sound recordings to 95 years from 50, meaning veteran acts' early hits could soon be free for all to use."

DBT Week in Review - 4/15- 4/21

UPDATE: Check out this review promo from New West. Sweet!

Finally! The Release. And what a release it is. Fantastic album by the band. Great reviews pouring in.

Tour dates with the Black Crowes have been annouced.

This WIR is gonna be short and sweet. I'm working on another picture tour that should be ready next week. Here's a sample:

Also, I'm writing a review of the reviews. The punditry of punditry. It'll be like a freakin' Escher painting. I'm already confused writing it. Should be good fun.

I do want to highlight one review in this post. This review is really the only one that matters and it comes from the Birthday Girl, DBTJenn. Jenn just turned 21, so now she can drink at the shows ;-P
dbts : Message: Re: [dbts] Re: Well Runs Dry: "Alright, I'll jump in here. Mind you I've been listening to these songs a while and in all kinds of order. The first one that got me was the title track - I just love that chord progression. I love the harmonic guitar work. Lots of people don't like Patterson's high voice, but it works for me, especially when he's backed by a such minor-key storm of instrumentation, and so earnest about what he's saying. Feb 14 was hot on it's tail, because of Brad's fucking bad ass drumbeat. I swear, I don't know many drummers who can hold a candle to the man. Plus, it's a very old song that even Horse Pussy used to play (my brother recognized it immediately and reminded me, though he said it sounded a little different when HP was doing it). I'd cried over Space City many a time, and it turned out about as good as I've ever heard Cooley play it. Of course Gravity's Gone got me at the same time as Feb 14, because it's just such an amazing song. We joked that Cooley'd just written down a bunch of the funny shit he said in one day and made a song out of it, cause that's pretty much how he talks. I think Easy On Yourself snuck up on me then, and I was running it over and over again for a while, too. Jason's songs cause that really sweet pop addiction that comes from his catchy hooks, and plaintive voice. I love his lyrics and their phrasing. I'd always appreciated Little Bonnie and I thought World of Hurt was a beautiful and intense song (possibly a masterpiece), but it took me a while to hook into Aftermath - just because it does sound so much like The Faces - but the lyrics got to me eventually, and now I love it. Goodbye and Wednesday were always there, always kickass, always creeping up on me. Shonna's bass playing on Goodbye gives me chillbumps, and the driving beat of Wednesday (plus that staccato guitar - I LOVE that!) does too. Along with Daylight, they're like the nougaty center of this album. And that's how it's rolled for me. -j"

What's left of Skynyrd did a benefit for the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. DBT WILL be honored in those halls someday:
Welcome to TimesDaily.com: "David Johnson, executive director of the hall of fame, is to be commended for organizing the Lynyrd Skynyrd benefit concert. Johnson was one of the first record producers to work with the Florida-based band back in the early 1970s, when no one had heard of them, and no one could understand their sound. Skynyrd recorded its first tracks at Quinvy Studios with Johnson and at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios with Jimmy Johnson.

Had Skynyrd not come to Muscle Shoals in search of a record deal, the pioneering band would not have found success later. And the surviving members of the band were happy to repay the debt with a benefit concert."
Here's a shout out to Jayfrombama, a fellow Shoals alumnus and musical savant. Jay's puttin' on a Muscle Shoals music history lesson at FAME in a couple of weeks. I'd love to attend that one. I'll try to get more information from him and post it next week. If you're anywhere near the Shoals and if the event includes the general public, I'd highly recommend going to hear Jay.

The following post is for Jay and all the other expatriated Shoalsians who might get the occassional homesickness. From the NY Times:

Florence, Alabama - Fashion Capital of the South - New York Times:
"Passing through on Highway 72, you could easily mistake Florence, Ala., for a backwater of Winn-Dixies and double-wide trailers. But turn off, and the city — population 36,264 — soon reveals its attractions: elegant 19th-century buildings, a living musical heritage and very fine fried okra. Five years ago, when Natalie Chanin returned home to start her clothing company, Project Alabama — known for high-fashion garments that are hand-stitched by local quilters — she was a pioneer, but today Florence is in full swing."
This is a picture of a booth at the Hollywood Inn in Florence, AL. I grew up right next to this soul food restaurant. My mouth waters just writing about it. Mac and Cheese. That's all I've got to say. Across the street is Bunyan's BBQ. Oh... My... God.... This is how we do in Flo-town: Smoked meat, no sauce. You can get mayo (which I do) and slaw (which I don't) on your BBQ sammiches. Put some hot sauce on that bad boy. Plain Lay's Potato Chips. Take your ass to the River.....

This is a picture of The Smokehouse Billiards, or simply, The Pool Hall. My senior year in highschool, I'd skip lunch every day and head to The Pool Hall. Between this place and being taken to the Tennessee line by some of the older crowd I ran with, I became a pretty damn good pool player. I can still get on a tear and whip anybody's ass in the land. Oh, and Chili Cheese Burgers with hot sauce. I might not slap my momma, but I'd probably slap somebody elses momma for one of those burgers right now. Damn, I done got hungry:

Keep an eye out next week for the picture tour and the review of the reviews.

DBT Week in Review 4/8 - 4/14

DBT has finished puttin' on The Rock Show for our friends in Europe. From the excellent reports coming from across the pond it sounds as if a good time was had by all. We sure are glad to have them back in the states, though.

Jerry Gunner gives a look at one of the final European shows with this review on the Yahoo board:
dbts : Message: Wolverhampton last night: "gain, a third of the show at least was different from the night before, 'Uncle Frank' and an amazing working of Paul McCartney's, or Beatle Paul as Jason says you call him in America, 'Roll it' for example. Another highlight for me was a new song from Jason. Don't shout at me if it isn't new, it was new to me. After the interval Jason came out on his own, much as Patterson had the night before and announced that 'We have problems with our government, you know, at home, we have problems with our government.' Note to Jenn - HE got political, not me:). He then told us about how the war is affecting people and in particular about a Marine from his home town who was killed by a remotely detonated IED and how the whole town turned out for his funeral. Apparently, according to Jason, such soldiers are buried in their dress uniform and now my memory is failing me but I think they are called Dress Blues and that was the name of the song. The Marine in question would be Matthew Conley who was killed just a few days short of his 22nd birthday. He was scheduled to leave Iraq on the 6th of March. Semper fi. Anyway, it is a beautiful song and it makes me yearn even more for an Isbell solo album."
DBT is a band of thinkers, that's for sure. They concern themselves with their community and their government. They, like a lot of other folks here in the U.S. know that "There's Somethin' happenin' here" and they ain't afraid to say something about it but they're also not preachy. I haven't heard Jason's new song "Dress Blues" but I'm sure it was written from a place of angst over losing a community member to an unjust war.

Over the past couple of weeks I've highlighted protest songs from The Dixie Chicks and Pink. Neil Young surprised some folks a SXSW by announcing that he has another album in the can and ready for release. Word on the street is that it is quite political and even contains a track called "Impeach the President" Below is a write up on the album:
NEW NEIL YOUNG ALBUM-- LIFE IN WAR-- WON'T PROVIDE ANY CAMPAIGN DITTIES FOR BUSH AND THE RUBBER-STAMP REPUBLICANS
Neil made it pretty clear with GREENDALE, a truly incredible but underrated album, that he isn't happy with the direction George Bush has taken the country. He told David Fricke of ROLLING STONE 'This is a time, I believe, of great inner turmoil for the majority of the American people. There is a new morality coming out of this administration -- fundamentalist religious views; a holier-than-thou attitude towards the rest of the world -- that is not classically American. I don't think Americans felt holier-than-thou in the twentieth century. We were happy and successful, with a great lifestyle. But something else is going on now. That's what Greendale is about. That's what Grandpa's problem is. He can't understand what's going on. He sees all of these things that the Patriot Act has taken away from what he feels is America.'"
Patterson isn't afraid to speak his politics as well. He's opposed to redistricting in Athens. The same type of gerrymandering that Tom Delay and several other Republicans have illegally perpetrated in their states to ensure Republican dominance in elections.

Recently Patterson posted new song lyrics to his website. Ever the historian, Patterson connects the repetition of history by comparing President Harding's Interior Secretary, Albert Fall to President Bush's outgoing Interior Secretary Gail Norton. (I bet Patterson runs the board whenever there is a historical category on Jeopardy).

HOGS AND HEIFERS AND LITTLE BLACK BAGS

President Harding put the man in charge
This country’s so beautiful, abundant and large
Rally our resources around the flag
Hogs and heifers and little black bags

While Harding called for a “return to normalcy”
Albert Fall was his Interior secretary
Looting the land for a ton of cash
Hogs and heifers and little black bags

If you learn your history, my fine young son
Not much has changed since the Teapot Dome
President Harding was revealed at last
Hogs and heifers and little black bags

Herbert Hoover’s been forever discredited
For not knowing how to deal with the mess he inherited
But it began several years before the crash
Hogs and heifers and little black bags

Its 80 years later and things ain’t changed
The same cast of characters with different names
Oil stocks and defense contractors rally the flag
Hogs and heifers and little black bags

Gail Norton resigned today
Her “wise use” doctrine a national disgrace
The private elite will welcome her back
Hogs and heifers and little black bags

Patterson Hood – March 19, 2006
If you want to know more about the lying sack of puss that is Gail Norton and what a tragedy she's been for America's land then give this small article a read
Gail Norton: Switchin’ on Gwich’in

And let us not forget the tongue in cheek of The President's Penis is Missing, which takes on the insanity of focusing on a president's infidelity when there are other, more pressing issues at hand.
“Them outer space people would laugh if they’d seen us
all this talk about cum-stains and oral coitus
meanwhile the whole world suffers from hunger and meanness
but we’re more concerned with the President’s penis”
We also have Patterson's prescient line in Demonic Possessions:
The devil says the only thing that’s buggin him
is Hell’s filling up with Republicans
But DBT ultimate political statement comes in Puttin' People on the Moon. I'm a frequent visitor to the progressive political site Dailykos. It is the home of grassroot politics. The founder of the site recently published a book called Crashing the Gates. It tackles the problems within the Democratic Party and outlines how the party can begin to win elections again by moving away from the entrenched beltway Democrats who are no better than the Republicans and moving towards placing the power back into the hands of the people. The book is next on my list to read.

I bring up Dailykos because I was tickled to find someone referencing Puttin' People on the Moon in the comments to one of the diaries. Click here, then ctrl+F and search for Puttin' People to see the comment.

To shorten this diatribe I could continue on for days, my belief is that it is important for the smart artist of a time period to comment on the fallacies of a government and to be involved in that process. Who better than the poets to explain to us via music and lyrics that "There's Something Happening Here". "And that's all I've got to say about that"... for now.

randywadkins from the Yahoo Group posts that Ole Miss had an academic seminar on DBT. I really wish I could have attended this as I've been working on something like this myself to teach at a university:
dbts : Message: lecture on DBT at Ole Miss tomorrow (Wed.): "Yeah, late notice I know, but if you're in the Oxford, MS area and want to see how recognized the Truckers are becoming, check this out:

Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2006
This message is being sent using E-mail to Groups ( UM Employees ). The Drive-By Truckers, a rock and roll band from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and Athens, Georgia, have, over the course of six albums released since 1998, focused on depicting their own version of the South, often inspired by their hometowns in North Alabama. Patterson Hood, the son of David Hood of the Muscle Shoals Sound, formed the band after he moved to Athens in the mid-nineties and became part of a small alternative country movement located in Athens and Atlanta dubbed the 'Redneck Underground.' The Drive-By Truckers' punk and country and western inspired songs gained a small following, while their third studio album, 2001's 'Southern Rock Opera,' landed them on the top of 'critics' best' lists of 2001. 'Southern Rock Opera' examined the story of the Southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd as a way of telling the Truckers' own stories of growing up in the South. Subsequent albums have also focused on other pieces of popular culture about the South and historical events native to the band's hometown. In this week's Southern Studies Brown Bag Lunch & Lecture presentation, ''Daddy, Tell Me Another Story': The Drive-By Truckers and the Search for Southern Identity,' Ellie Campbell, a native of Anniston, Alabama and graduate of Vanderbilt University, and a Southern Studies graduate student will address the ways in which the Drive-By Truckers use popular culture images to create their own vision of the South and Southern identity, one that rejects both outside criticism of the South, and also takes issue with Southerners' own, sometimes equally limited, opinions about the South. The Southern Studies Brown Bag Lunch & Lecture Series takes place at 12 noon in Barnard Observatory's lecture hall 0n Wednesdays during the fall and spring semesters. ----- For more information or assistance related to a disability, please contact: cssc@... or 5993 Visit 'Inside Ole Miss Online' for UM faculty & staff news at http://www.olemiss.edu/iom."
Jonathan from the Yahoo Group post some great, historical article on Skynyrd. Great reads:
dbts : Message: OT: Ronnie Van Zant Interviews (Lengthy): "But major figures from Buddy Holly(1959) to Otis Redding(1967) and Jim Croce(1973) were lost in plane crashes. The latest was buried near his native Jacksonville last week. He was Ronnie Van Zant, 28, co-founder, writer and lead singer of LYNYRD SKYNYRD. It had supplanted the Allman Brothers as the reigning Southern boogie band and as a leading U.S. challenger to the British hegemony of the concert coliseums."
Here are a couple of YouTube videos of the band in live settings:

YouTube - Jason Isbell - Decoration Day
"We're not white trash. We're Celtic"
YouTube - NEW Patterson Hood featuring David Schools

And speaking of cool videos, New West Released this short one of "The Making of A Blessing and a Curse". This makes me very excited because it hints at a bigger DVD that might be coming out later this year. Fingers crossed.

See y'all at The Rock Show!

DBT Week in Review - 4/1-7

A veritable crap load of DBT info this week. I'm not even sure where to start.

New West birthed a slide stream of the ENTIRE album. (I'm listening to it all the way through for the first time as a write this. BEST.... ROCK... BAND.... EVER)!

You can check it out the Quicktime stream here and the Windows Media here. Check 'em both cause they may be different. I'm working on the Quicktime stream at the moment.

We welcome a new fan site to the ranks this week with One Of These Days. This is a fantastic site that archives Trucker shows of yore. It is the DB of DBT (found a place to work that in, Alec ;-D). Awesome timeline and discography, too. Alec, the creator of the site even has the rarist of rare... DBT setlist. Check one out below:

Awesome site, Alec!

Hat tip to Ninebullets for alerting us to the Truckers in Harp Magazine:

Drive-By Truckers: Drive They Said:
"The foremost thing you need to know about the Drive-By Truckers’ decade-long career arc and how their new album, A Blessing and a Curse, fits snugly at its apex is this: After years spent debunking Southern stereotypes, the Drive-By Truckers reached a critical decision to not become one"
Harp has also put up an awesome video of DBT in the studio.

Phil, either on the Yahoo Group or Ninebullets, gave us this video of Let There Be Rock from the Pentax show in Europe. Thanks, Phil!

Next up is a child that is so loved and at such an early age has been introduced to The Best Rock that future success is virtually guaranteed and the parents should be given an award. From the Yahoo Group I present to you Meaux Jason and his lovely wife's kick-ass kid!

Check out the picture on Gimp's office wall. A true fan.

TequliaBrad from the Yahoo Group offer's DBTJenn some much needed relief from all the hard work she puts into the band and the fans:
"I am sorry to hear about your mental well being. That being said, perhaps I can help. Do you have feelings of inadequacy? Do you suffer from shyness? Do you sometimes wish you were more assertive? If you answered yes to any of these questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist about Tequila(r). Tequila(r) is the safe, natural way to feel better and more confident about yourself and your actions. Tequila(r) can help ease you out of your shyness and let you tell the world that you're ready and willing to do just about anything. You will notice the benefits of Tequila(r) almost immediately, and with a regimen of regular doses you can overcome any obstacles that prevent you from living the life you want to live. Shyness and awkwardness will be a thing of the past, and you will discover many talents you never knew you had. Stop hiding and start living, with Tequila(r). Tequila(r) may not be right for everyone. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not use Tequila(r). However, women who wouldn't mind nursing or becoming pregnant are encouraged to try it. Side effects may include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, incarceration, erotic lustfulness, loss of motor control, loss of clothing, loss of money, loss of virginity, delusions of grandeur, table dancing, headache, dehydration, dry mouth, and a desire to sing Karaoke and play all-night rounds of Strip Poker, Truth Or Dare, and Naked Twister."

Roel, from the Yahoo Group, took some video of Zip City. Check it out.

Over on Ninebullets, Rober took some pics from one of the concerts in Spain. Check 'em out.

Also from Ninebullets, Anders let's us know that ABAAC has charted in Norway. Very cool!

I was checking out some of the websites of the venues in Europe. This blurb caught my eye and gave me a chuckle. Southern colloquialisms just don't translate, do they? Check out the bold.
David Kelly from the Yahoo Group hooks up with this review from the UK Times. Dang, them Brits sure do write all nice and flowery:

Pop: Get those motors running - Music - Times Online
"In any contemplation of the Southern rock idiom, it’s hard to dispel images of head-down, half-hour guitar solos and drunk bikers yelling “Freebird”. It’s high time the genre had a makeover, and Drive-By Truckers are putting a whole new face on their sweet home Alabama."
...
The most recent personnel switch came after Decoration Day. At odds with the ingrained masculinity of the musical dialect, the bassist Shonna Tucker was voted into the group. “Shonna joining was one of the easiest things that’s ever happened,” says Hood. “She’s a phenomenal musician and a really cool person. As far as having a girl in the band goes, I think we’ve always had girls in the band.” His eyes glint. “We just finally got one who’s female.”
Back here in the states Robson Bassett writes his first DBT review and has it published in his law school's paper. Good on ya, Robson.

“Alabama A__ Whuppin”
"The Drive-By Truckers (Truckers, DBT) rolled into my hometown of Charlottesville on a late Wednesday night in February to open a quick southeast tour before heading to Europe and releasing their sixth studio album A Blessing and a Curse. I had some concern over the fact that the venue was Starr Hill, only because of the possibility that my ears would still be bleeding the next morning during Environmental Law due to the three-guitar attack of Jason Isbell, Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood. The band apparently had different plans as they decided to bring their good friend John Neff (Athens, GA musician extraordinaire) to join them for the entire show on pedal steel guitar. While some may compare the three-guitar attack DBT to Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd, the four-guitar presence turned into an all-out blitzkrieg assault throughout most of the night."
American's have always done well bastardizing certain types of music. Check out this evil spawn mash-up of DBT and Vanilla Ice. Control + F the page and search for Vanilla Ice.

To veer away from DBT a bit, I want to highlight a post from Bill in Iowa on the Yahoo Group regarding the passing of Buck Owen. I, too, grew up watching Hee-Haw. "I searched the world over and thought I found true love. But you found another and 'prrrrrp' you were gone. Where oh where are you tonight...." Cheers to Bill for the following post and cheers to Buck Owen:
Damn, damn, damn.

When I was a younger man I had different answers for the question “What’s your favorite band?”. When I was 18 it was Guns ‘n’ Roses, when I was 25 it was the Black Crowes, when I was 30 it was the Truckers. But in the last couple of years I’ve started hearing the words “Buck Owens and the Buckaroos” come out of my mouth.

I grew up with my parents’ Buck records, especially the live Carnegie Hall album and the Tiger By The Tail album, both of which are available on excellent expanded CD re-issues through Sundazed. Buck and Don and the boyz were equal parts rock and twang…and those suits! I’ve been picking up old Buck LPs in record bins for a while (just scored Greatest Hits Vol. 2 the other night) and it’s amazing how exciting his “country” music was during the Beatles’ “rock” era. It was very, very similar, right down to Ringo’s vocal take on “Act Naturally”.

I also grew up with Hee Haw, although it’s sad that all of the obits popping up on the web (Buck died today) are calling him “Hee Haw co-host Buck Owens”. His career with the Buckaroos preceding Hee Haw was more popular than people give it credit (more than 20 #1 country hits, according to the article I was just reading), and I must admit that I prefer the hip Buck to the pickin’ and grinnin’ Buck. Still, especially if you were a farm kid, Buck playing that red, white and blue guitar on TV every weekend was something to look forward to. I recently rented a couple of the Hee Haw DVDs from Netflix, and that show freakin’ rocked musically (when they weren’t doing 3rd-rate Laugh-In skits).

Anyway, I never did get to see him live, and maybe it was better that I didn’t see him as a senior citizen and still think of his live shows as the 60’s versions (complete with screaming teen fans and Don Rich’s twangin’ Tele).

Bill in Iowa"
While we're off topic, Elvis, The King's home if finally getting National Landmark status:
"MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The home of the King of Rock 'n' Roll joined the homes of presidents past and present in becoming a National Historic Landmark Monday.

Graceland, where Elvis Presley died in 1977, joins the White House, Mount Vernon and Monticello in receiving the country's highest designation for historic properties".
Here's a "Mad Rambling" from Patterson regarding the King:

MEMPHIS, EGYPT (revisited)

(All this water into wine stuff is fine, but what I really need right now is
A big long piece of steel to whomp someone with)

Two summers ago, on the anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley, I wrote an essay about the parallels between Rock and Roll and religion (as well as how the boom stand killed Elvis). It was, like much of my writing at the time, a messy affair, full of big, half-baked ideas. I threw a lot against the wall with little care for what stuck and what didn't.
.....
Now it all seems like two lifetimes ago. A few weeks later, 9/11 occurred and suddenly everything (and everyone) changed. The next day, we got our new CDs back from the pressing plant and hit the road. (What else could we do?) I look back at what I was writing at the time and can't fathom the reckless disregard with which I could throw together words. I'm not altogether happy with the change, but as I said, everything did change and that's just the way it is.

I have always been drawn to the impossible dream. Rock and Roll was always the only way I could come up with to do what I always knew had to be done. Rock and Roll turned a poor boy from Mississippi into a messiah that is still worshipped decades after his death. His music had long since ceased to be relevant by the later years of his life, yet it somehow seems so damned important all these years later. Elvis is the grandest example in our lifetime, but certainly not close to the only one and that storyline still resonates and fascinates me all these years later.

"Rock and Roll as a path to redemption and a way out".
In my youth, it was Bruce Springsteen and how he escaped New Jersey to fame and fortune. The story we told with our album Southern Rock Opera tells basically the same story, only using the mythology surrounding Lynyrd Skynyrd to do it. (Their ascent into the pantheon of fame was even more unlikely and their all-too literal descent the stuff of fine literature). When I was sixteen, I ran away from home to see Springsteen in Starkville MS. The show changed my life and showed me just what was possible if you believed enough and Rocked with all your might.

Rock and Roll did not abandon Elvis. Elvis abandoned Rock and Roll.
Elvis lost sight of what made him holy.
Who can blame him?
Many preachers have led their flock away from God in his name (for the
Money, glory, power, to want to be Jesus or even God himself)

Elvis didn't die for anyone's sins but his own, but his most damning sin seemed to me to be his losing himself. He no longer drove the machine and got too lost to watch over the drivers shoulder. He got fat and bloated on his own money, fame, and legend. He began using boom stands because they freed him of the earthly constraints of having to deal with the reality of his own size and gravity.
That long straight piece of steel that holds your microphone in place is the straight and narrow that binds you to real world.
If you get too fat, you knock it over and it reminds you to lose some of
that lardass and eat a few less fried banana sandwiches.
And if some over zealous fanatic rushes the stage, it's a very handy weapon
(so have no FEAR MOTHERFUCKER)

No, my friend, Rock and Roll didn't kill Elvis.
In the end neither did The Colonel, Priscilla, or RCA or Hollywood or Vegas.
God didn't exactly kill Jesus either, I guess.
(If Jesus had a straight stand, he might have been able to fight his way off
that damned mountain).

Now it's two years later. Elvis and Ronnie are still dead (like Franco I guess).
Springsteen is still out preaching the word. He seems like a likable fella and although I'm no longer passionate about his newer music, he's still one of the finest preachers in the redemptive powers of Rock and Roll and I applaud him for surviving and continuing. The last thing the world needs now is another dead Rock Star.

We're back out on the road, touring behind another new album. I plan on saying that on a fairly regular basis for the rest of my life and I have every intention of that being a very long time.

Rock will set you free
and freedom can kill ya quicker than anything, but is life worth living without it?

See you at The Rock Show,
Patterson Hood

DBT Week in Review - 3/17- 3-24

Today is Patterson's Birthday! Happy Birthday, PHood!!!

A Blessing and a Curse was released on March 20 in Europe.
If you can't wait til April 18th click here to order.

First European Review:
5 out of 5 stars Hot, Blue and Righteous, March 11, 2006

Reviewer: bucephalas67 from Manchester, England
This band, this album, are the reason you will have your faith restored in live music. If you havent seen them live I suggest you do so at the first opportunity.Raw, emotional music of this genre just doesnt get any better. Their last album "The Dirty south" showcased a band at their creative zenith, but fortunately for ourselves they have excelled themselves again. A remarkable set of songs, beautifully crafted, contemporary yet authentic, with a production as raw as a hogs ass, how can you put into words what will be considered in the future to be a classic album with absolutely no peers ?.After hearing this cd you will be in love with the band and WILL gladly die for them. Forget about those end of year lists,I shit you not. All bets are off, this is album of the year already and were only just into March.
Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame: "By Patterson Hood,
The danger of becoming a mythological musical artist is that people spend more time talking about the mythology than listening to the music. Truly, few bands have ever been as beloved and successful -- and mythological -- as Lynyrd Skynyrd, yet here it is, 2006, and they're only now being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- nearly a decade after their eligibility."
"Amy" from the Yahoo group turns us on to this DBT article:
Drive-By Truckers Ready To Rock On Tour

Jason Isbell sends us a note regarding a friend with MS:

Hey everybody. Hope you're all doing well, and I appreciate the support ya'll are showing while we're getting ready to release the new record. We'll be in your town soon. I wanted to mention something dear to my heart and maybe round up some help for some good people. A friend of mine from here in North Alabama has Multiple Sclerosis and he's heading up a team to participate in a n MS walk-a- thon soon. If you know anyone with this disease, it can be a real sonofabitch. If you have any extra laying around, please make a donation to their cause by going to the website below. Thanks.

While checking out what folks are saying on the various boards about DBT I found these folks who have been chatting about the band for a few years now.

A Stones Board
set aside some time to talk about DBT, too.

It ain't Carl Perkins' but someone in Florence just sold Johnny Cash's Caddy. (Mr. Phillips didn't but if for him, though).

Car-selling blues
"Killian is a huge Johnny Cash fan, but he decided to put the Cadillac up for auction on the heels of the success of the 'Walk the Line' movie, which is about Cash's life."
I'm always interested on how people are finding my blog. Here are some of the searched terms used over the past week that directed folks to AAW. People sure are looking to get laid in Alabama:
the dollar lyrics by jimmy johnson
brown tree snake repetition of guam power authority
get laid huntsville

Donelle Cooley from the Yahoo Board turns us on to a poet/singer/artist named John Trudell. He's recently released a documentary.

If you didn't know it already, Patterson and Cooley have a love child. Here is a picture of Papa Patterson, home from a hard days work, and doting mama Cooley takin' care of the new baby:

Off course, Wild Auntie Shonna comes over and proceeds to drink the baby:

Drink the baby! Don't drink the baby!! Actually, the picture of the band above came from a Georgia Music Magazine article. Mark Merritt was kind enough to send me a copy of the magazine and that picture is one of my favorites. The article is out of sight, too! Thanks, Mark!

The Pa Patterson and Ma Cooley pic came from a back door site. Tune in next week and I'll show you were it is. It's got a ton of great archive DBT stuff such as this classic Jason Isbell quiz. Feel free to try your hand at the answers in the comments:

Jason: Okay kids... Let's see how much you know about bad music and my own personal guilty pleasures. 10 questions and you gotta get 'em all right to win. Whoever does it first gets a one-of-a-kind redneck hat with a damn largemouth bass cross-stitched on the front. No joke. Here we go:

1. This one's a two-parter: Who sang that oh so dramatic backup part on Christopher Cross' big-tittied hit "Ride Like the Wind?" AND who played the guitar solo?

2. Who wrote "Achy Breaky Heart?" His daughter's hot.

3. Which of the nominees for NuSkin male lotion's 2003 "man of the year" wrote the 90's crossover smash "I Swear?"

4. Mister Mister had two big hits. One was "Take These Broken Wings." What was the name of the other one (spelling counts)?

5. What the hell does that mean? (See #4)

6. What was the name of the abominable record Cher made in Muscle Shoals (actually Sheffield)?

7. Which STYX tour introduced the world to Mr. Roboto?

8. Name the record by Glass Tiger that featured such hits as "Someday" and "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)."

9. Another two parter: Which bad song by America was sampled in which guilty pleasure by Janet Jackson?

10. In the Meat Loaf classic "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" what exactly would he not do?

That's it for this week, kiddies. Tune in next Friday.
