Drive-By Truckers @ Brooklyn Bowl|TheMST.com | The Music Street Team:
"Given the desolate location, terrible sight lines, and cavernous Thunder Dome-esque space of Terminal 5, it would have been worth it to buy tickets to the New Year’s Eve show just to get tickets to the Brooklyn Bowl show, and skip the Terminal 5 show entirely. Unless you really love the Drive-By Truckers. And given the crowd reaction at Brooklyn Bowl, it didn’t seem like many of the fans planned on skipping a Drive-By Truckers show. Ever."
_______

Top 10 Albums Of 2010, by Paul Shirley:
"I could make the case (once again, to myself, because, once again, no one else would care to hear the argument) that the Drive-By Truckers managed to write my favorite AND second-favorite songs of the year, with “Birthday Boy” and “This F*cking Job”.

But I could be talked down from that position; those two songs might only be my third-favorite and fifth-favorite of the year. However, there is one thing of which I am positive: the Truckers wrote my favorite stanza of the year. From “Birthday Boy”, which is written from the perspective of a world-weary stripper:

“Got a girlfriend, don’t you, boy,

Nervous hands can’t lie,

Married men don’t ask how much,

Single ones ain’t buying.”

Even now, after something like 1,795 listens this year, the song gives me the chills; the Drive-By Truckers’ ability to cut to the heart of the human condition is one of the great musical revelations of the 21st century.

Drive By Truckers: Incisive."

Kill the Body, the Head Will Die: Long Live the (new) Liner Notes - The 6149:
"The DBTs have a new album coming out on February 15th: Go-Go Boots. Once again they are breaking out the old video camera, but this time they are taking a slightly different, more personal approach. They have already posted their first video of the series. In it, Patterson Hood tells the what, why and how how they will go about creating videos for the album launch. He is not so much marketing as he is being transparent about how they want to connect with fans and tell the story of the album. I think it is brilliant and I am looking forward to it."

"If the Drive-By Truckers were a barfly's usual order, they'd be a Boilermaker -- can of beer, shot of whiskey. No grenadine, no lime wedges or muddled sugar, no paper umbrellas. 'Birthday Boy' ain't destined to replace 'Happy Birthday' anytime soon -- it's written from the perspective of a jaded working girl. 'I ain't got all night,' she says. We'll make some time."

_______

The Best 70 Albums of 2010 < PopMatters:
"34 - Drive-By Truckers - The Big To-Do

Character studies are fine and all, but they’re much more interesting if they rock. Case in point: “The Fourth Night of My Drinking”, funny and pretty when played on the piano, also sounds like an immense cloud of longing and dread when subjected to the Truckers’ triple-guitar attack. Their song subjects are ripped from the headlines, sure—a working stiff is worse off than his daddy, a preacher’s wife goes on trial for murdering her depraved husband, the local music scene dies. But you keep listening because the rhythm section’s a powerhouse, their chord progressions are unique, and the guitarists have a penchant for noisy squall like nobody this side of Sonic Youth. Though the second half’s got some filler, it’s in the grand tradition of filler that sounds pretty good whenever you put it on. And put it on you should, because for sheer beautiful guitar tones, nobody can touch this band. Josh Langhoff"

Feral Fire (The Rebel Group) It's always a good year when there's a new Glossary record on the stereo, and 2010 is no different. Well, except that this time they had their buddies in Lucero releasing the album — which is the rockin'-est conglomeration of Dinosaur Jr. and Thin Lizzy we've heard in ages — and spent more time on the road supporting it than they ever have before. And if that weren't hot enough, they also spiced things up with the debut of Saussary, their tour-only homemade hot sauce, and solo records from Joey and Kelly Kneiser that were chock-full of Murfreesboro's finest players and songwriters. —Sean L. 10 Giants of Southern Rock Guitar:
"With their heady mix of fuzzed-up riff rock, rootsy acoustic shuffles and Crazy Horse-like excursions into the wild blue yonder, the Drive-By Truckers offer up an especially ambitious brand of southern rock. Favoring SGs and Gold Top Deluxes, frontman Patterson Hood generally tunes down a whole step in order to achieve the Truckers’ distinctive sound. The band’s sprawling 2001 opus, Southern Rock Opera, paid conscious tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allmans, and the Marshall Tucker Band."

Film Review: The Secret to a Happy Ending at Northwest Film Forum:
"Drive-By Truckers is a musical family affair; not just because inspired leader singer/songwriter Patterson Hood is the son of extremely supportive Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section bass player David Hood, or the fact that he has been collaborating with fellow Shoals, North Alabama vocalist/guitarist Mike Cooley for decades. DBT is an extended filial force driven by a web of affection and responsibility within the band — which also includes another vivid vocalist and tunesmith, Jason Isbell, married to bass player Shannon Tucker; and longtime drummer Brad Morgan — and a deep connection to their fans."

Jeff Pollack: The Music Industry's New Model: Where Is It?
"Individual artist apps aren't new...in 2009, some of the major labels rolled out apps for a few of their largest artists built largely around exclusive access to video content, mainly performance clips, promotional items, and behind-the-scenes peeks. But that simply is not enough; there has to a more unique offering to entice real fan engagement. Artists can only generate real revenue from apps on a long-term basis if the fan is getting something they deem valuable.

So, the battle to discover the new model continues on all fronts as the realization sinks in that the answer surely will be a combination of ideas (such as bundled subscriptions, cool artist apps, compelling fan experiences), not one magic solution. One thing won't be the answer, everything will be."

Webisode 7 from The Big To-Do - Santa Fe:

_______

Fri., June 18: Drive-By Truckers fans give 'Big To-Do' a big thumbs-up at tennessean.com | Tune In Music City:
"We’re hearing that folks are seeing the Drive-By Truckers’ new The Big To-Do — packed with speedy, cut-the-crud anthems such as 'This (expletive)-ing Job' — as the easiest access point yet for listeners unfamiliar with the Athens, Ga., band.

It’s weird to think of the Truckers cutting a more “accessible” album, considering they’re already one of the most universally appealing indie acts playing today, with a fanbase spanning from hipsters to bikers to the AARP."

Glossary - Feral Fire

Over a year ago, there was a disk in my car stereo that simply refused to leave and refused to stop playing. I could not tear myself from listening to what was my favorite album of that time period.

Glossary's The Better Nature of our Angels would have been on the top of my year end lists, if I ever did year end lists.

I loved this record and wanted to have its baby.

Today, Glossary dips into another literary well for the title of their latest effort, Feral Fire.

I've had the pleasure of reviewing Feral Fire for 10 days or so and it lives up to and surpasses in some cases the promise of Better Angels.

Glossary is definitely one of my favorite bands out there.

Why, two of the band members, Todd Beene and Kelly Kneiser appear in AAW's header.

This band pours it heart and soul out on stage, too. A great performing band.

Please go purchase their new album today.

My favorite so far are:

No Guarantee
Pretty Things

Through the Screen Door

Hope and Peril

Pretty, Through and Hope could be the finest 3 song run of the year.

The album is, per past Glossary, lyrically engaging but it also has a groove to it.

Official news about the rock band Glossary from Murfreesboro, TN About:
"“Nowadays, we definitely want the songs to have some sort of groove to them… or swing a little more,” says Kneiser. “Really, we just try to just work the song. Nobody plays more than they should. It’s more like ‘how can we serve the song?’”"
See, told ya.

Here's the press release. Go buy Feral Fire TODAY!

Amazon.com: Feral Fire: Glossary: Music

When author Cormac McCarthy describes looking upon “paths of feral fire in the coagulate sands” in his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Road, he hit on what Glossary lead singer Joey Kneiser says is “the perfect image of longing.”

It sparked the title of Glossary’s sixth full-length album, Feral Fire, which includes a testifying batch of R&B and country tinged rock songs that explores the band’s dysfunctional relationship with time, religion, materialism, the universe and southern ideals. It’s that same longing, says Kneiser, that drives people to pursue the things they wouldn’t normally pursue.

Mixing pedal steel and other traditional instrumentation with bending and crashing electric guitars, Glossary’s spirited American rock and roll speaks loudly to those beyond the southern region—those who relate to the great communicators like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Otis Redding. Joey Kneiser’s cracked voice, complemented by Kelly Kneiser’s relaxed, creamy vocals, creates an everyman musical quality able to fit the passing night through a car window, or a rowdy beer swilling get-together. The group has opened for everyone from the Drive-By Truckers to Against Me! and been embraced as musical cousins by their crowds.

Produced by Centro-matic drummer and recording guru Matt Pence, and released on sister band Lucero’s label, Liberty Lement, Feral Fire was recorded in ten days and encapsulatesGlossary’s unremitting musical drive---one that involves playing and creating for the sake of simply playing and creating. In fact, the five-piece from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has been releasing records both independently and on labels for over a decade.

Feral Fire sees a band full of “pop music junkies,” with a soft spot for both underground music and ’80s country radio, delving into multiple genres. The soul-soaked “Pretty Things” is a love song pointed at a materialistic girl coming to grips with change, while the jaunty, rebellious “Save Your Money for the Weekend” chronicles a rough and ragged southerner pleading with a waning Christian girl to shed some of her inhibitions—kind of a southern version of “Only the Good Die Young”. The latter seems to resurrect the spirit of Thin Lizzy’s Phil Lynott and includes the line, “All I know is southern girls are sweeter ‘cause they’re full of Jesus’ love.”

"No final tallies yet on the Nuci's Space fundraiser, but I'm suspecting it will end up in the $20,000 range. I will keep everyone posted as those figures come to me.
Thanks to everyone who bought tickets to the show and to everyone who came out to Nuci's Space and made bids on the fine art and memorabilia there. I'd also like to thank all of the artists who donated their wares to the cause.
Kudos to the Camp Amped Sampler Band that opened Thursdays benefit show. They were amazing. I look forward to seeing what each and every one of them do in the future."

The War On Pop: DBT's Return Home for Three-Night Stand: Drive-By Truckers at the 40 Watt (1/15/10):
"While the band played nine new tracks from The Big To Do as well as this tribute 7”, they also ensured that the hometown fans received more than their money’s worth, as they played an assortment of songs from across their catalog. Singers Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley alternated on lead vocals for fan favorites including “Three Dimes Down,” “Lookout Mountain” and “Women Without Whiskey,” providing the crowd with plenty a number to sing along with."

Who Made You God? 1-14-2010 - SignOnSanDiego.com:
"The only thing hotter than the triple-digit temperatures at last year’s Coachella festival in Indio was the music produced by some of the event’s most potent artists. Few of them sizzled as much (or seemed as effortlessly cool) as Memphis soul legend Booker T., who performs Saturday at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. The results were so joyous and exuberant that it was difficult to determine who was beaming more, the sweat-drenched members of the audience or Booker T. and his band (which at Coachella just happened to be top Southern rock band Drive By Truckers)."

"Meet the most influential man you've never heard of.

Bob Lefsetz, a 56-year-old blogger, is to music what Nikki Finke is to Hollywood -- a reclusive, sardonic writer who has the ear of every exec in the industry, but is little known and of little consequence outside of it.

_______

Top films of the decade:
"2. 25th Hour (2002): Spike Lee filmed this screen version of David Benioff's novel, about a New York drug dealer (Edward Norton) on his last day of freedom, just months after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The first great 21st century film made about a 21st century subject, Lee's movie was a meditation on New York and America, and it captured for all time the spiritual misery and confusion that followed that tragedy. Misunderstood as just a pretty good movie in its time, it's an American masterpiece."
_______

Decade in review: The 10 best TV shows:
"7. 'Slings and Arrows,' Sundance Channel. Three smart, funny, subtle and emotionally rewarding seasons made this Canadian series one of those rare finds worth seeking out. Set at a troubled Shakespearean theater company, the literate and witty story lines revolved around not only the performers and their backstage antics and offstage personalities but also the overwhelming transformative power of the Bard himself, played by people who really felt the words. A gem."

Give Some Thanks

I'm taking the next few days away from the blog, so stuff yourselves silly and holiday your asses off.

Some almost good news, though.

Paula Deen HIT In The FACE With A Ham (VIDEO)

I propose a TV show where Paula Deen gets hit in the face repeatedly with a ham, or hammer, for an hour straight. No commercials.

That woman gets on my last nerve.

New, free music from one of my favorite rockers.

Official news about the rock band Glossary from Murfreesboro, TN Blog Archive Joey’s solo record – free download:

"Ok, first thing’s first. Our new record, Feral Fire, will be released on February 2nd. We are all very excited to say the least.

Joey is so excited, he has decided to give you his new solo record as a free download!All-Night Cover It’s called The All-Night Bedroom Revival. I know Joey spent a lot of time on it and he did everything himself. I listened to it while I was on the road this past month and I can tell you that it’s gripping and dense and is a showcase for one of my favorite songwriters ever. The record also includes the incredible song “Paper Mills” written by Kevin Kerby of Little Rock, AR. So please enjoy it thoroughly and let it tide you over until Feral Fire’s birthday on Feb 2nd"
