Fraudster

There is a very sick and twisted segment of the U.S. that is being legitimized and main-streamed by the traditional media.

What the hell is wrong with these people (and by 'people' I mean the twisted fucks and the news media).

pandagon.net:

"Via Spencer, Gawker reports on a growing movement of Christians using religious “jokes” in order to call for the assassination of Obama. The “joke” is this T-shirt, citing a verse from the Bible that says, “May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.” As Gawker explains, it’s surrounded by other prayers of enemy smiting, namely that his widow and children starve and live in poverty after his death. Gawker has other examples of right wingers thinking it’s cute to be coy---but in an unsubtle, stupid way that’s not nearly as clever as they think---in calling for Obama’s death."

As the world has talked for a dozen years about what to do next, new ship passages opened through the once frozen summer sea ice of the Arctic. Guess who wrote this in 97....

'As I said in China this spring, there is no place for abuse in what must be considered the family of man. There is no place for torture and arbitrary detention. There is no place for forced confessions. There is no place for intolerance of dissent.' 'While we walked through the Rotunda. Simplest governing strategy evah is to do the exact opposite of what any Republican wants.

GOP Stripped Flu Pandemic Preparedness From Stimulus:

"Remember way back in the day, President Obama delivered his Not Really The State Of The Union address, and the GOP trotted out Future Of The Republican Party Supra-Genius Bobbly Jindal to provide a rebuttal? Well, we all had some laughs, didn't we? Mainly because Jindal was all: 'They want to spend stimulus money on volcano monitoring? Why everyone knows that the Hill Witch keeps tabs on our volcanoes by floating chicken bones in her own intestinal ichor!' And then Alaska's Mount Redoubt erupted, suggesting there might be something to this 'let's monitor volcanoes with government-funded science' idea.

Well, as it turns out, volcano monitoring wasn't the only worthwhile public safety program that was deemed extravagant in the stimulus package, funding for pandemic preparation was axed as well. And playing a critical role was Susan Collins -- for whom the necessity of obtaining her vote is in inverse proportion to the intelligence she shows in policy making:"

Think Progress Rep. Ryan: Democrats have a ‘right’ to use budget reconciliaton.:

"Congressional Democrats and the Obama administration have floated using 'budget reconciliation' to pass health care reform -- where only 51 votes would be required for approval of a bill -- to bypass the increasing number of Republican filibuster threats. In response, Senate Republicans have said they would 'grind the Senate to a virtual halt'; Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) explained that reconciliation would be 'the nuclear war.' Today, GOP up-and-comer Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), however, said it is Democrats' 'right' to use budget reconciliation:

“It's their right. They did win the election,” said Ryan, R-Wis. “That’s what I tell all my constituents who are worried about this. They won the election. They did run on these ideas. They did run on nationalizing health care. So, you're right about that. They have the votes with reconciliation. They nailed down the process so that they can make sure they have the votes and that they can get this thing through really fast. It is their right. It is what they can do.”

Notably, much of President Bush's agenda was passed in Republican-controlled Congresses using budget reconciliation. At the Wonk Room, Igor Volsky writes that reconciliation is the key to achieving health care reform."

"JAKARTA, Indonesia — From Pakistan to Gaza and Lebanon, militant Islamic movements have gained ground rapidly in recent years, fanning Western fears of a consolidation of radical Muslim governments. But here in the world’s most populous Muslim nation just the opposite is happening, with Islamic parties suffering a steep drop in popular support.

In parliamentary elections this month, voters punished Islamic parties that focused narrowly on religious issues, and even the parties’ best efforts to appeal to the country’s mainstream failed to sway the public."

So, hey, what's been going on with the guy that nobody wanted to have a beer with back in 2000.

Gore "deeply honored" by Nobel Prize win:

"Former Vice President Al Gore said today that he is 'deeply honored' to win the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize today along with a United Nations panel for their work fighting global warming. Gore, who is in the Bay Area today, said in a statement that plans to donate the proceeds to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan non-profit organization working on the climate crisis. Gore is to meet with the group this morning in Palo Alto."
Past year: Emmy, Oscar, best selling book, Nobel Peace Prize, admired and respected around the world, all around badass.

Let's recap. Beer Boy or Leader Lion?

Daily Kos: Bush v Gore, The Aftermath:

"Did you hear that Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize? Yup. He did. And an Oscar and an Emmy.

Just so we are clear what that leaves us with, in this corner:

Former vice president Al Gore and a United Nations panel that monitors climate change were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize today for their work educating the world about global warming and pressing for political action to control it. In a brief public appearance in California, Gore vowed to use the award to increase awareness and push for a more urgent response to climate change

And in that corner, hiding behind anyone in uniform:

President Bush is a competitive guy. But this is one contest he would rather lose. With 18 months left in office, he is in the running for most unpopular president in the history of modern polling.

Nice call by the SCOTUS in 2000. Do you think the Justices are proud today?"

James Baker III has been sent by the Bush Administration to coordinate efforts on the ground. The United States Supreme Court in a surprise vote of 5 to 4 have declared George W. Bush the winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Justice Samuel Alito, writing for the majority, stated that 'allowing Al Gore to win the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize violates the spirit and intent of the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Consitution.' Justice Alito was joined in the majority decision by Justices Scalia, Thomas, Kennedy, and Chief Justice Roberts."

ADVERTISEMENT The data showed that the fortunes of the bottom 50 percent of Americans are worsening, with that group earning 12.8 percent of all income in 2005, down from 13.4 percent the year before, the paper said. It said that while the IRS data goes back only to 1986, academic research suggests that the last time wealthy Americans had such a high percentage of the national income pie was in the 1920s."

"A small private intelligence company that monitors Islamic terrorist groups obtained a new Osama bin Laden video ahead of its official release last month, and around 10 a.m. on Sept. 7, it notified the Bush administration of its secret acquisition. It gave two senior officials access on the condition that the officials not reveal they had it until the al-Qaeda release. Within 20 minutes, a range of intelligence agencies had begun downloading it from the company's Web site. By midafternoon that day, the video and a transcript of its audio track had been leaked from within the Bush administration to cable television news and broadcast worldwide."

But here is the problem: We have become victims of our own success. Ever wonder why your dog can gobble, lick, and gnaw all he wants along the glorious buffet of a city street and (almost) never get sick? Your dog is used to eating shit. Americans, on the other hand, grow up eating almost no shit at all."

New fire-retardant gel can save homes

HOT SPRINGS, S.D. - It was the most intense fire ever recorded in the Black Hills National Forest, but nearly all homes coated with a slimy gel were saved while dozens of houses nearby burned to the ground.
But the frustrating part:

Some firefighters say gel is not more widely used because it is still new, the firefighting industry can be slow to embrace new technology, and the backpack sprayers can be slow and unreliable at higher altitudes.
With this kind of success, why not buy in wholesale with the gel?
In the July wildfire that destroyed 33 homes near Hot Springs, a Black Hills tourist town, electrician and volunteer firefighter Gorden Sabo helped spray 27 homes with gel. Twenty-five of them withstood the blaze, he said.

One gelled home was destroyed because it was missing a garage door and the flames got inside, while the other home could not be saved because it started burning before it could be completely covered with gel, Sabo said.

John Nash, 63, was delighted to find that his house had been saved.

"I shook his hand," Nash said of Sabo. "I was pretty impressed. I lost everything except what he'd gelled — sheds, trucks, tractors. It was total wipeout except for the house."

Sabo has developed a $12,000-to-$20,000 gel system that can be attached to fire trucks and recently has begun to sell it to fire departments. (By comparison, a compressed-air foam system for a fire truck, which is what most fire departments use to protect homes, costs about $80,000.) The gel is made by such companies as Barricade International of Hobe Sound, Fla.

"Gel is a 21st-century tool. It has to become a mainstay of the fire service, and it's not yet," Waggoner said.

Downloading Existing Outrage

The 'Surge' was a bunch of bullshit to begin with.

But here we are.... months after the surge with no improvement... Not that it was designed to create improvement.... not that any-damn-thing we do will improve the situation over there... many more U.S. soldiers dead for the vanity of some old, white men in Washington who have no problem sending other peoples kids to their deaths.

.... and nobody seems to give a shit.

Surge fails to bring needed reconciliation to Iraq:

"As the Bush administration prepares to present its version of 'progress' associated with the president's troop surge that began seven months ago, independent assessments show the surge has failed to catalyze political developments necessary for the country's future. The Los Angeles Times reports that Iraq's parliament has passed none of the major legislation Washington had expected it to approve. The 28,500 additional troops who have filed into the country since February also have failed to substantially decrease civilian deaths in Iraq, and more Iraqis are fleeing their homes now than before the surge began. The best possible summation of the surge's results indicate it has created a 'holding pattern' in the country, which is wholly dependent on US troops to maintain what few decreases in violence have been observed."

War with Iran: Coming from the traditional media and conservative 'think-tanks' (which is as oxy-moron as it gets) to a town near you in mere days.

We haven't even attempted any diplomatic talks with Iran.

TPMmuckraker September 4, 2007 2:45 PM:

"Barnett Rubin is the last person to set off wild speculation about war with Iran: the longtime Afghanistan expert is wonky, moderate and thoroughly analytical. But that's exactly what happened on Wednesday, when Rubin blogged that an anonymous, plugged-in friend told him that Dick Cheney's office had issued 'instructions' to conservative think tanks like the American Enterprise Institute to start a drumbeat for attacking Iran. In order to determine precisely what he's alleging, and get a sense of its credibility, I spoke with Rubin, a senior fellow at NYU's Center on International Cooperation this morning. Cheney's likely motivation for issuing such instructions to his think-tank allies would be to win an inter-administration battle over the future of Iran policy. Cheney, an advocate of confronting the Iranians militarily, faces opposition from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, where the primary concern is preventing an open-ended Iraq commitment from decimating military preparedness for additional crises. A new war is the last thing the chiefs want, and on this, they're backed by Defense Secretary Bob Gates. 'It may be that the president hasn't decided yet,' says Rubin."

The letter says that impeachment is warranted for their “deceiving the public under the false pretense that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction” and “destroying” the reputation of the United States and the good will of other nations."

I have a lot of friends who share the following problem with me: Our sense of outrage is so saturated that when a new outrage occurs, we have to download some existing outrage into an external hard drive in order to make room for a new outrage."

"The Arctic ice cap has collapsed at an unprecedented rate this summer and levels of sea ice in the region now stand at record lows, scientists have announced. So much ice has melted this summer that the Northwest passage across the top of Canada is fully navigable, and observers say the Northeast passage along Russia's Arctic coast could open later this month. This entire post on C&L is a good one, but the historical quotes defining patriotism vs. nationalism are especially poignant.

Crooks and Liars - Responsibilities

The difference between patriotism and nationalism is that the patriot is proud of his country for what it does, and the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does; the first attitude creates a feeling of responsibility, but the second a feeling of blind arrogance that leads to war. — Sidney J. Harris

Patriotism is a lively sense of collective responsibility. Nationalism is a silly cock crowing on its own dunghill and calling for larger spurs and brighter beaks. I fear that nationalism is one of England’s many spurious gifts to the world. — Richard Aldington

“Responsibility” seems to be a common theme:

What do we mean by patriotism in the context of our times? I venture to suggest that what we mean is a sense of national responsibility … a patriotism which is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime. — Adlai Stevenson

Al Gore Is Getting Hot...

In here. I hope he doesn't take off all his clothes... OK, enough with Nelly, but I do hope that Gore runs. He's my only candidate of choice at the moment.

How can you not love this man that speaketh thusly:

Reason, logic, knowledge, evidence - these all may play a diminished role in our conversation of democracy today. But when enough people lock into the same narrative and connect the same dots and feel the danger facing their children, then these objections will be set aside. They will be. And we're close. We're not there yet. But we're close.

"Reason, logic, knowledge, evidence"... oh baby! Makin' me hot in here.

Changing the pattern that causes people to sit in traffic jams for an hour and a half every day is not a sacrifice, it's an enhancement. Changing the assumption that it's perfectly natural to take 4,000 pounds of metal with us everywhere we go doesn't have to be a sacrifice. Whether it's ultralight, ultrasafe vehicles or plug-in hybrid technology or some better alternative that is still on the drawing boards, let's have at it. Will there come a time when harder choices or more difficult and painful choices have to be made? Probably. But the sacrifices associated with not doing it completely overwhelm whatever difficulty might eventually be involved in making this transformation.

Henry has got a really good show on IFC. I don't watch it as often as I should but whenever I do I'm always impressed by how smart it is. Smart TV needs support.

Sic 'em, Henry:

Henry Rollins 'Tees Off' on Halliburton-style privatization:

"Punk singer-songwriter Henry Rollins took on Iraq War profiteers on his Independent Film Channel show this Saturday.

'The invasion and occupation of Iraq and the resulting nightmare we are enduring are for some a depressing, ongoing catastrophe with no end in sight,' he said. 'Yet for another group, it is the best thing that could ever happen. ... The corporations that provide services to the military are making more money in this time than ever before. Troop withdrawal is not in their interest.'

'Why not bring that overpriced roadshow here to America and treat the citizens to a little of that privatized efficiency?' Rollins went on. 'I'm sure KBR knows what to do with my freedom a lot better than I do. Might as well privatize that, too. Keep it up, Cheney. All you're doing is emboldening me.'"

Democracy, schemocracy.

When you elect people who don't believe in government, well, then you get people that ignore the rule of law.

Government watchdog says Bush ignored law after 30% of signing statements

The Government Accountability Office issued a report showing that US government agencies ignored Congressional legislation on 30% of the occasions when President George W. Bush issued a 'presidential signing statement' after signing bills into law. The report was released today by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV), Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
.....

"The White House cannot pick and choose which laws it follows and which it ignores. When a president signs a bill into law, the president signs the entire bill. The Administration cannot be in the business of cherry picking the laws it likes and the laws it doesn't," the President Pro Tempore of the Senate said. "This GAO opinion underscores the fact that the Bush White House is constantly grabbing for more power, seeking to drive the people's branch of government to the sidelines....We must continue to demand accountability and openness from this White House to counter this power grab."

Back to the Kitchen, Ladies

Ladies, don't worry your pretty little heads. Shhhh, hush your mouth before I backhand it. You don't need to be thinking, no-how. Cook my food, clean my house, squirt out my heirs and keep your fucking mouth shut. Jesus told you so... and my belt does too.

I got your motherfucking activist judges right here!

The women of the U.S. should be taking to the streets today. 5 people without vaginas or medical degrees just legislated their misogyny and archiac religious beliefs onto the women... and men of this country.

Conservatives hate sex. Conservatives are anti-womens health. Women will die because of this ruling.

Doctors denounce high court ruling / They say other 2nd-term abortions riskier, medical decisions should be left to them:

"The controversial abortion procedure outlawed Wednesday by the Supreme Court is rarely performed but may offer distinct advantages over other second-trimester abortion methods, Bay Area doctors said Wednesday.

The point, doctors said, is it should be up to medical professionals to decide what's safest for their patients.

'There are medical situations where this procedure is necessary to protect a woman's health,' said Dr. Anne Foster-Rosales, chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood Golden Gate. 'This ruling tells us that women's health is no longer the priority.'"

The only SCOTUS with a vagina dissented:

Supreme Court Rhetoric Reveals Deep ‘Hostility’ To Women’s Rights:

"As Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg explains in her dissent, the majority opinion’s language seems to be based on a deep hostility to women’s rights, rather than on sound scientific evidence or jurisprudence:

The Court's hostility to the right Roe and Casey secured is not concealed. Throughout, the opinion refers to obstetrician- gynecologists and surgeons who perform abortions not by the titles of their medical specialties, but by the pejorative label 'abortion doctor'. A fetus is described as an 'unborn child,” and as a 'baby,” second-trimester, dissenting previability abortions are referred to as “late-term,” and the reasoned medical judgments of highly trained doctors are dismissed as ”preferences” motivated by “mere convenience.”"
_______

Again, Conservatives think Jesus should be the only tonic your health needs. We are fucking living the Handmaid's Tale.

Why does the Bush administration have a list of everyone who has ever used anti-depressants?

"Guess what? They do. From ABC News, regarding the VA Tech shooter:

Some news accounts have suggested that Cho had a history of antidepressant use, but senior federal officials tell ABC News that they can find no record of such medication in the government's files. This does not completely rule out prescription drug use, including samples from a physician, drugs obtained through illegal Internet sources, or a gap in the federal database, but the sources say theirs is a reasonably complete search.

We don't even have a list of gun owners, and we have a list of everyone who has been prescribed anti-depressants? And in fact, the article suggests that this isn't just a database of patients who use anti-depressants, it's a federal database of every prescription drug you've ever bought.

What exactly do the Bushies do with that list? And what other lists do they have of which medications you've ever taken?"

All too often in both breast reconstruction and breast augmentation (over 300,000 of which are performed per year) the patient is unsatisfied with the size or shape of their implant. So why not let the patient come in for a little 'adjustment'?

Adjustable implants have been gaining traction of late."

Cock Fighting

For the dip shit Republicans who are still fighting the Cold War and a Red Scare. I don't know if they honestly believe such tripe or if they are using it as a club to bash progressives, but, a poster at Kos sets 'em straight:

Daily Kos: Socialism is Evil:
"Listen:

Democrats are not socialists. Democrats are not capitalists.

Democrats are problem solvers. We don't believe that government is THE answer. Nor do we believe that government is the problem. All we care about is finding solutions to problems. Sometimes the answers may be addressed by the free market. Sometimes that market may exhibit problems of its own which would require oversight. Sometimes the government may be the best tool to solve problems. Whatever works. That's all we care about.

Republicans are not the party of problem solvers. "

________

In more cock fighting news.....

Wheeler over at Alablawg consistently produces some top-notch commentary. Always worth a read. I find myself agreeing with him often. A few days ago he tackled cock-fighting. The literal kind not the figurative kind.

Today’s Really Stupid Law:
"First of all, why cockfighting is a crime at all is beyond me. Is it something nice? No. Something I would ever do? No. But the only suffering is by a bunch of stupid roosters. And what’s gonna happen to these roosters after Johnny Law busts up the fights? They’ll be killed. So why not let them go out in a blaze of glory? Anyway, I sure hope no-one who opposes cockfighting eats chicken, because what happens to the Colonel’s best prior to the application of his secret recipe of herbs and spices would be called tortuous by even John Yoo.

Second, even granting the criminality of cockfighting, no-way this is a federal issue. How do cockfights in Alabama effect interstate commerce? I want a real answer, not a Wickard v. Filburn answer."

Gore's global warming doc wins Oscar:
"LOS ANGELES - 'An Inconvenient Truth,' the documentary that turned former vice president Al Gore's power-point presentation on global warming into an engaging and entertaining film, won the Oscar Sunday night."
......

"My fellow Americans," Gore said to laughter from the crowd. "People all over the world, we need to solve the climate crisis. It's not a political issue, it's a moral issue. We have everything we need to get started with the possible will to act. That's a renewable resource. Let's renew it."

I was wrong. This is my mea culpa. Not only has Bush cracked that list, but he is planted firmly at the top."

Stoned Ecstasy

Rolling Stone producing some of the best and most sound political commentary/reporting of just about any other news source going.

The following article is about my man Gore. After reading this article, for the first time, I feel that there is a real chance this man might run again. The... best... possible thing to happen to the states in 21st, IMO.

Give it a read:

Rolling Stone : Why Gore Should Run -- And How He Can Win:
"A stiff Vice President campaigns on his administration's legacy of unprecedented prosperity. Looks terrible on TV. Bows out, following a disputed vote count. Then, two terms later, with no incumbent in the race, he re-enters the fray. Promises to change the course of a disastrous war founded on lies. And charges to victory. I'm referring, of course, to the 1968 campaign of Richard Milhous Nixon. But four decades later, history has a chance to repeat itself for Albert Arnold Gore.

If the Democrats were going to sit down and construct the perfect candidate for 2008, they'd be hard-pressed to improve on Gore.

How could you not vote for a man whose documentary is up for a couple of Oscars:

Gore film up for best documentary:
"Al Gore may have lost the 2000 presidential election by the slimmest of margins, but the former vice president is hoping his critically acclaimed movie on global warming, 'An Inconvenient Truth,' experiences a different fate at the upcoming Oscars,' reports CNN. 'The movie received two Oscar nods Tuesday -- one for best documentary and one for best original song: Melissa Etheridge's 'I Need to Wake Up.'.'"

I mean, can the U.S. endure another complete doofus a la:

President's Portrayal of 'The Enemy' Often Flawed

It all becomes moot unless we fix this:

Election staff convicted in recount rig:
"CLEVELAND — Two election workers were convicted Wednesday of rigging a recount of the 2004 presidential election to avoid a more thorough review in Ohio's most populous county."
Ohio? Hmmmmm, what was it about Ohio that gave the presidency to Bush? Hmmmmmm

Oh, and we also need to fix this:

Eschaton:
"This is a point I've returned to repeatedly, but the mainstream media - the 'serious' media - really needs to figure out how to handle outlets like Fox. Aside from their complete lack of ethics or standards, they also imagine (or claim to imagine) they're correcting an imbalance which doesn't exist. "
_______

Speaking of a comeback story that would rival Gore's should he run and win:

Former 'Bad News Bear' now up for Oscar:
"LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- 'Jubilation. Pure unbelievable joy. This is a day of all days,' said Jackie Earle Haley, who secured an Oscar nomination Tuesday for his supporting role in 'Little Children.'"

The South is NOT Lost

Never gonna change my ass. There are a lot of good folks down there and all they need is some national party backing and cash and they'll change the south's political landscape from red to purple then to blue. It is already happening.

The easiest way to piss a southerner off is to tell them that they can't do or be something. Keep telling us we'll always be a Republican lock during elections. Keep on.

Daily Kos: The South Is Lost meme: STFU, Y'all:
"The American poet Walt Whitman addressed contradiction when he wrote 'Do I contradict myself? Very well, then, I contradict myself. I am large, I contain multitudes.'

The South does indeed contain multitudes, more than 20% of the total US population. Properly organized, Southern voters can be an enormous force for change, especially since more have begun to wake up to the fact that Republicans and Evangelicals have sold us down river"
_______

Ignorance isn't just for southerners anymore. Check out this beauty from Washington state.

Inconvenient Truth
After a parent who supports the teaching of creationism and opposes sex education complained about the film, the Federal Way School Board on Tuesday placed what it labeled a moratorium on showing the film. The movie consists largely of a computer presentation by former Vice President Al Gore recounting scientists' findings.

"Condoms don't belong in school, and neither does Al Gore. He's not a schoolteacher," said Frosty Hardison, a parent of seven who also said that he believes the Earth is 14,000 years old. "The information that's being presented is a very cockeyed view of what the truth is. ... The Bible says that in the end times everything will burn up, but that perspective isn't in the DVD.
"The Bible says that in the end times everything will burn up, but that perspective isn't in the DVD"

Really?

A documentary about global warming doesn't contain information on the world 'burning up'? This statement is coming from a person named 'Frosty'?! Frosty does admitt that with only coal for eyes, no ears and the constant fog his mind is in from the corbcobb pipe that it was a wee bit difficult to actually watch the documentary so he got his opinion from FAUX News.

'To oppose everything while proposing nothing is irresponsible,' he said. "
Yeah, Shrub. Nobody has proposed any other ideas. Like you would listen to them any way, but here are just a few:

The Release Democrats Should Send Out First Thing Monday Morning:
"Of course, the Democrats have come up with a lot of suggestions. Even the President, ever since he admitted that his ideas were only exacerbating the situation, admitted he's listened to many ideas, including those from the Democrats and war critics within his own party.

John Murtha(D, PA) called for redeployment.

Joe Biden (D, Del) has proposed a partition plan for Iraq, a Tri-Part solution.

Chuck Hagel (R, ) advocates a border watch.

John Kerry (D, Mass) has offered a comprehensive plan to end the civil war.

Others have introduced political solutions: summits dealing with Iraq and the countries bordering it, the Arab League, NATO, and the Permanent Members of the United Nations Security Council."

Pan's Labyrinth, billed as a fairy tale for adults, contained some of the most realistic scenes of non-fantasy brutality I have ever witnessed. Irish Whiskey Dicks

My lead article today isn't about politics. We'll get to that soon enough. It is about something far greater than politics.... Whiskey... and Coffee.

If you didn't know, Irish Coffee orginated in San Francisco at the Buena Vista Cafe. Big rumblings of late as the Mecca of Irish Coffee has changed their brand for the first time. This is some serious shit. Especially since the distillery that makes the original is name 'Cooley Distillery'. We ALL know that anything named 'Cooley' knows a potato-load about whiskey.

Here's the tale:

Coffee, cream, sugar and -- Irish whiskey / ... but Buena Vista changed brands:
"The Bay Area has been rocked on its heels in the last month or so. The 49ers may move to Santa Clara and the Athletics are going to Fremont. But just under the radar something really serious has happened -- the venerable Buena Vista cafe has altered the recipe for Irish coffee.

The Buena Vista, at the foot of Hyde Street, is where Irish coffee first came to America, 54 years ago this month. The Buena Vista is the largest single consumer of Irish whiskey in the country -- 18,720 liter-sized bottles a year. The Buena Vista is the cathedral of Irish coffee in the United States.

Hopefully, an era of enlightenment and reason:

The conservative era is over. What will replace it?:
"Though George W. Bush is as right-wing as Reagan or Gingrich, he has managed to terminate the conservative era. Bush did this, first of all, by joining with congressional Republicans in treating the federal budget as a Christmas stocking for supporters. Rapidly accumulating deficits and growth in federal spending—from 18.3 percent of GDP in Clinton's final year to 20.3 percent in 2006—undermined the association of conservatism with limited government. On social, moral, and scientific issues, Bush tilted so far to the right that he scared away secular, socially moderate, and libertarian Republicans. Finally, Bush's feckless foreign policy discredited optional military intervention, much as Johnson and Nixon did in Vietnam."
