I usually begin the Friday post with DBT news, but today I want to put the Dexateens front and center.

Dear Celebrities of Tomorrow,

It's the Dexateens again, needing something.

We're doing a video for a song called "Caption," which asks the musical question

"If there was a caption on the picture of your life
would it tell the story that you tell yourself inside?"

That's the gist of it right there, with some elaboration about hopes, fears, present, past. Deep songwriterly things, understand?

So the video idea is to feature pictures of people with--wait for it--CAPTIONS. This is where you come in.

We'd like to feature our friends' pictures along with whatever text you'd choose as the caption (On the picture. Of your life.).

It can be serious, zany, sad, a caption for today, or a summary of your life to this point--whatever you want barring a few exceptions outlined below in 4.

If you're interested here's what to do:

1. Send a picture of yourself to


mycaption@gmail.com


Preliminary questions and tech support requests can be sent to that address as well.

The picture will need to be between 72 and 120 dpi and at least 720 x 480. For the layman: high enough resolution for the web and not tiny.

2. Include your caption text in the body of the email. Keep em under 150 characters. It's like haiku or twitter!

3. If we want to use your picture (which we probably will) we'll need to get Official Permission from you to do so. We can send a separate email covering that once we've picked the photos, or you can paste the following into the body of the email:

"I certify that you have the right to use and distribute this photo in the Dexateens' 'Caption' video."

4. So we can use the picture, keep it clean: no logos; no dodgy behavior; no nakedness. For example, a picture of you doing bong rips while having Mickey Mouse and the Nike logo tattooed on your butt cheeks will be summarily dismissed.

"At Saturday's induction banquet, Oldham and his wife shared a table with his friend, singer/songwriter Bobby Womack, Rolling Stone's rhythm guitarist Ron Wood, and record mogul Russell Simmons, founder of the pioneering hip-hop label Def Jam.

Kanye says 'South Park' put him in check:

"NEW YORK – 'South Park' may have accomplished the impossible — getting Kanye West to check his ego. The Comedy Central show skewered the famously self-important rapper on its show Wednesday night, painting him as a narcissistic figure so out of touch with reality he couldn't even take a (very politically incorrect) joke."

And perhaps to show that he's really serious about making that change, he provided a link to one of the most biting moments from the "South Park" show, and thanked the writers as well.

Why can't paid 'journalist' do just a little bit of research. Few people would associate DBT with soul music? Really? Soul is the teat from whence they suckled as babes.

"Two years ago, Booker T. Jones went to South by Southwest and ended up performing with his old band and connecting with a new one. After playing a showcase with the MG's—the Stax Records house band that backed Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and others and became famous for instrumentals like 'Green Onions'—Booker met a member of the group that would back him on his first solo album in almost two decades.

The band he found is one that few would associate with soul music: the Drive-By Truckers.

Tuscaloosa Trifecta: Dexateens, Cecil Hurt, and Deontay Wilder - TideSports.com

I'm not sure if you guys are really paying attention, but Tuscaloosa is on a roll.

Immediately you think I'm talking about UA athletics. Sure, it's easy to point to the football program and use it as a shining example with a recent undefeated regular season and back-to-back No. 1 recruiting classes. You don't have to look much further to bring up an SEC Championship in gymnastics, a top 5 showing in softball, a baseball team that simply mashes the pea, a golf prodigy committing to Alabama, and an obvious attempt at scoring a hot commodity as a men's head basketball coach. Anthony Grant or not, Mal Moore and Co. have made their statement.

But something else has risen from the soil of Tuscaloosa featuring three local staples that speaks volumes to where T-Town is in the whole order of things.

I'm talking about the Dexateens, our own Cecil Hurt, and bronze medal-winning boxer Deontay Wilder coming together for a few minutes of video utopia.

On May 12, the Dexateens release their latest album "Singlewide," and put together a little promotional video at Skyy Boxing featuring the members of the band, Cecil, and Deontay. You can find it on YouTube, TideSports, Tuscaloosanews.com, and right here in this little blog here.

Talk about a combined representation of sheer awesome. Really look closely at it. You've got a local band quite possibly on the cusp of taking the leap to national recognition (good luck, fellas), a local Olympic hero on the path to professional boxing success, and a well-known, well-respected, local sports authority that has been a cornerstone of The Tuscaloosa News sports department since 1982. It's the true Tuscaloosa trifecta.

The more I watch it, the more I absolutely love it. So I will share this with you. I will also add a couple more video items for your perusal ... one a T-News product following Deontay's Olympic journey and the other a terrific Dexateens music video shot at the Capitol School.

So, this is really cool... for me at least... being the music/political blogger type.

Howard Wolfson, Hillary Clinton's 2008 Presidential Campaign's Communication Director, FOX News and New Republic contributor and music/political blogger interviewed Patterson Hood after the election:

"Wolfson: Given that it’s the day after the election, I wanted to start with a couple of political questions, if that’s all right?

Hood: All right.

Wolfson: You know, you have written so much about the history of the South and the recent history of the South. What did it mean to you last night to have the country elect our first African-American president and have at least one state and maybe two from the “Old Confederacy” vote for him?

Hood: I think it’s great. I think it’s fantastic. I really do. I’m just – I’m almost – I’m kind of speechless about it all and, actually, he was actually my first choice at the very beginning when he first jumped in and it was such a long shot. Boz Scaggs' nightclub Slim's 20 years old:

"Rock star Boz Scaggs wanted to open the R&B nightclub of his dreams. He found some high-powered partners and took over a vacant South of Market restaurant called the Warehouse, where he threw a New Year's Eve bash before closing it to remodel. It would be nine months before the doors opened again, and when they did, the place was called Slim's and Scaggs rocked the room before an invited crowd, backed by Texas guitar slinger Anson Funderburgh and Huey Lewis on harmonica.

The Home Front Kickoff Round-up

Something about a 3 night run of shows by some band from Athens or something happened this weekend? Not that I keep up with such things, but I hear that these.... how do you say.... ROCK STARS pictured below tore some faces off for 3 nights in a row?

So sad I couldn't be there. However, I did draft two reporters for the cause. One being Shayne because she called and begged, just begged to do something for the blog. I, reluctantly, relented.

Actually, Shayne kicked much ass by calling during the shows and letting me hear a snippet or two.

She and Todd Beane from Glossary drunk dialed me on Friday night. Probably the first time I've talked to Todd in 20 years. A real treat.

"Last night was the first night of the three day DBT bender at the 40 Watt. The TMcB and I strolled in as the tallest man in rock and roll, (tall, not so hard working) Bo Bedingfield and the Wydelles were starting their second song. What can I say about Bo…(that would be ok for his family to read, well, I mean, besides his sister Beth) They sounded dead on, with john Neff pulling double duty. Kelly and I were placing bets on how long it would take Clay to pull down his drum mic and start singing. No covers of Tumbling Dice, but he got us a few songs later when they closed with my favorite John Prine’s “Pretty Good”

Shayne, you thoroughly rock for keeping me involved. Much love.

Benny was my photo journalist. I sent him A.A.W. credentials that gave him access to practically anywhere (since A.A.W. is a low budget operation the 'credentials' were just a piece of gaffers tape with A.A.W. Sharpied on it.)

John Neff just tore it up; he was so good he made me want to simultaneously laugh and cry, and Spooner was in rare form and oh so tasty. I can't tell you how much I love Shonna's songs live especially - she just blows me away. Her brother was just glowing last night he's so proud of her."
