DBT Week in Review - 5/29/09

DBT!

Big blog post from Patterson this week with all kinds of goodies:

Drive-By Truckers:

"DBT has a couple of new releases in the immediate pipeline:

First off, our Austin City Limits show from last fall will be released on July 7 on DVD. The DVD will include the entire performance (only about a third of it was aired when it came on TV).
This is by far the best live performance of ours ever caught on film.
We were on, the sound was excellent, and the production value top-notch. We loved playing on that stage and the crowd was fantastic.
It also features one of the last ever performances of '18 Wheels Of Love', featuring the full monologue and the sequel monologue.

Second in upcoming DBT News, on September 1st, New West will be releasing THE FINE PRINT (A Collection of Oddities and Rarities 2003-2008). We finished mixing it yesterday and are mastering it Thursday. It features 12 songs and maybe the most fun album we've ever made. Songs include 'George Jones Talkin' Cell Phone Blues', 'Rebels', 'Play It All Night Long', 'TVA' and the original never released version of 'Goode's Field Road'."

Dexateens

Dexateen’s Chicago Premiere - Come Back Real Soon, Ya Hear? : Sound Citizen:

"Anyway - this is not your standard southern rock. And that was apparent from the moment the first chord rang out. Perhaps guitarist Lee Bains III’s AC/DC shirt and Gibson SG should have tipped me off. There are times when the Dexateens jam a hard rock sound, you can even hear some metal in there, but with a decidedly hillbilly heart - and I mean that in a great way. You can hear bluegrass in both the vocals and rhythms of every song and you get the feeling that it just comes out that way. It feels so deep-rooted in their sound that I don’t imagine they could play any other way even if they tried. At times I heard just hints of Neil Young, The Black Crowes and even some Kid Rock, believe it or not, but those are just my own music biases creeping in - the Dexateens have a sound all their own. And I dig it. They can slow it down too, like “Grandaddy’s Mouth.” (check out the partial video below.)

The Dexateens may have made their first Chicago stop this week, but it won’t be their last. I feel good about the staying power with this one. And so do the people at Austin City Limits, where they will be making an appearance."

EU pushes music industry to open up online rights - The Globe and Mail:

"EU antitrust regulators told the music industry Tuesday to move quickly and change licenses that currently restrict online music stores such as iTunes from offering the same songs for sale across Europe.

Internet music downloads in Europe lag behind those in the United States, pulling in just a fraction of revenues the record industry is losing from falling CD sales.

Part of the problem in Europe is that music rights are sold separately in each country, which has prevented Apple Inc (AAPL-Q130.097.596.20%) .'s iTunes from setting up a single store to service all of Europe. Instead, it has to seek licenses from each EU member state where it wishes to sell and to set up separate national stores with different music selections."

A Guitar Magazine Tests the Luxury Waters - NYTimes.com:

"One might assume that the new magazine Guitar Aficionado is a spinoff of the 17-year-old Cigar Aficionado. Both have covers with celebrities holding the featured prop (the chef Tom Colicchio with a 1963 guitar, Jay-Z with a stogie of a presumably more recent vintage). They both carry stories about alcohol, watches and men’s fashion, and ads for cigars and speakers. Also, both titles include the word “aficionado.”"
_______

NPR: R.I.P. Jay Bennett:

"Today we say goodbye to the talented Jay Bennett, who brought a wonderful depth of sound to some of Wilco's best-loved records -- particularly my favorites, Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Bennett left the band in 2001, but his influence remains stamped on its sound"
_______

Daily Kos: R.I.P. Jay Bennett:

"However, with this morning's news, we now know what drove Bennett to sue a former friend and bandmate: the threat of overwhelming medical bills. Like many artists and countless others who do not pursue traditional forms of employment, Bennett lacked health insurance. At the time of his death, Bennett was suffering from severe pain, and though he desperately needed hip replacement surgery, he was concerned that seeking help would send him spiraling into crippling debt. Despite the claims of health care industry apologists, many people like Bennett are beyond assistance. Struggling to secure a steady source of income early on, musicians are often forced to choose between their vocation and health insurance when they're young, and by the time they get old, they typically find themselves ineligible to receive coverage under any plan whatsoever.

Stories like this underline the desperate need for health reform that, at the very least, includes a public option. The United States needs artists and innovators who work outside the confines of the corporate safety net, and we should not be forcing them to choose between their health and the art that enriches all of our lives."

Nice Wine Rack

Republicrats are screwing with my party in a bad way.

Centrist Dems Rank With Fear:

"Blue Dogs actually seem like the most scared people in all of Washington, D.C. as a result of this article. They are afraid of Republican attacks. They are afraid of conservative pundits. They are afraid of their constituents. They are afraid of motions to recommit that are meaningless in terms of actual policy. And they are protected by Emanuel and Hoyer, who seem petrified of all the same things. They seem to all operate in a perpetual state of fear, despite their surface machismo. And yes, it does seem like fear, rather than simply conservative beliefs in this case, because otherwise why would they be in favor of a meaningless procedural motion that has nothing to do with policy? The widespread fear in the tough guy wing of the Democratic Party is one of the great ironies of modern American politics."

Klan on Klan hate is always a good time.

Members of one Klan group plan to protest another in Cullman:

"CULLMAN, Ala. -- Members of one Ku Klux Klan organization say they will assemble at the courthouse Nov. 10 to show their opposition to another Klan group that plans an anti-immigration rally there that day. Ken Mier, who described himself as an investigator for the Alabama Ku Klux Klan and the national office of the Ku Klux Klan LLC, said in an e-mail to The Cullman Times that his group is against the tactics of the National Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, which held an anti-immigration protest last month in Athens. 'We are opposed to the ignorance and stupidity as displayed by the individuals that thumbed their nose at the area churches by continuing to use racial slurs, threats and avoided Christian deportment,' he said."

Gear Shiftin' Love

*Sigh*. Another reason why I'll never move home.

"Damn, baby, looks like we gonna hafta keep on using the gear shifter".

Next up, Alabama bans cucumbers.

Court Leaves Ala. Sex Toy Ban Intact:

"MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court declined Monday to hear a challenge to Alabama's ban on the sale of sex toys, ending a nine-year legal battle and sending a warning to store owners to clean off their shelves. An adult-store owner had asked the justices to throw out the law as an unconstitutional intrusion into the privacy of the bedroom. But the Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal, leaving intact a lower court ruling that upheld the law. Sherri Williams, owner of Pleasures stores in Huntsville and Decatur, said she was disappointed, but plans to sue again on First Amendment free speech grounds. 'My motto has been they are going to have to pry this vibrator from my cold, dead hand. I refuse to give up,' she said."

Not that McCain matters anymore... and in a stark departure from the man that ran against Bush in 99/00... this type of pandering to the evil effing base of the Republican party.... so, so sad.

Groups criticize McCain for calling U.S. 'Christian nation':

"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Muslim and Jewish groups on Monday sharply criticized Sen. John McCain's comments that he would prefer a Christian president to lead the United States. art.mccain.nh.ap.jpg GOP presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain campaigns Sunday in Derry, New Hampshire. The Arizona Republican's remarks came in an interview with Beliefnet, a Web site that covers religious issues and affairs. 'I just have to say in all candor that since this nation was founded primarily on Christian principles, personally, I prefer someone who has a grounding in my faith,' the GOP presidential hopeful told the Web site in an interview published Saturday."
This 'christian nation' BS is just that... a load of BS:

Founding Fathers - Religious quotes:

"James Madison, principal author of the constitution:

'The civil Government, though bereft of everything like an associated hierarchy, possesses the requisite stability, and performs its functions with complete success, whilst the number, the industry, and the morality of the priesthood, and the devotion of the people, have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the church from the State.' (1819)."

"'I am tolerant of all creeds. Yet if any sect suffered itself to be used for political objects I would meet it by political opposition. In my view church and state should be separate, not only in form, but fact. Religion and politics should not be mingled.' (Millard Fillmore)

'When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read: 'All men are created equal except negroes, foreigners and Catholics.' When it comes to this I should prefer immigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty--to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.' (Abraham Lincoln)

'Encourage free schools, and resolve that not one dollar of money shall be appropriated to the support of any sectarian school. Resolve that neither the state nor nation, or both combined, shall support institutions of learning other than those sufficient to afford every child growing up in the land the opportunity of a good common school education, unmixed with sectarian, pagan, or atheistical tenets. Leave the matter of religion to the family altar, the church, and the private schools, supported entirely by private contributions. Keep the church and state forever separated.' (Ulysses S. Grant)"
... and on and on and on...

What the hell is wrong with these people.

Victoria needs to spend a little time with a gear shifter or a cucumber.

No hugs allowed at Ill. middle school:

"OAK PARK, Ill. - If you need a hug, you won't get it at Percy Julian Middle School. Principal Victoria Sharts banned hugging among the suburban Chicago school's 860 students anywhere inside the building. She said students were forming 'hug lines' that made them late for classes and crowded the hallways. ADVERTISEMENT Cheap on gas Better for the environment Stylish 'Hugging is really more appropriate for airports or for family reunions than passing and seeing each other every few minutes in the halls,' Sharts said. Another reason to institute the no-hugging policy was that some hugs could be too long and too close, she said."

DBT Week in Review - 8/17/07

A couple of pictures and a show review from Tequila Brad.

Sunday night, workweek looming on the horizon, but Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are finally in Denton, and there is no way I am gonna miss this one. Yeah, it's at Hailey's, but I'm going anyway. For those of you not familiar with this particular venue, let me try and explain. Most of you do know, that I try and video record the shows I attend. Hailey's is NOT video friendly. Imagine, if you will, trying to video, in a cave, with only nightlights for illumination. They DO have some spots, but they are trained at about groin level. So either they regularly have "little people" performing there, or perhaps they were having a "package parade" across the main stage, at some earlier point. Who knows?

All that aside, it was Jason Isbell, I HAD to go!! Centro put on a hell of a show, with Jason on guitar for their entire set. When it was time for Jason, he started with Down in a Hole, but the sound was awful. Did I mention that the sound at Hailey's usually sucks too? Then, after they fixed the low hum, they kicked into Grown, Never Gonna Change, Goddamn Lonely Love, and Try. Then Jason played In A Razor Town, and Dress Blues. He then turned the mic over to Browan Lollar for (I believe) Run Runaway. Then over to the keys for Chicago Promenade, with Scotty Danbom taking over about midway through the song, and then staying on for Danko Manuel. We were also treated to Outfit, Please Be With Me, Brand New Kind Of Actress. Jason sang a song by himself, but I didn't recognize it. If anyone else was there, and knows what it is, please let me know. Then Jason called up Scott and Brent for a rocking rendition of Atlantic City. Then they closed with a 10 minute long Decoration Day.

Every ass was thoroughly kicked, and sent home bruised and bleeding. Make sure to get out for your abuse, when Jason comes through your town, you deserve it!

Thankee, Brad!

dbts : Message: Re:Allmans, DBTs and MOFRO
....
During the ABB band show, I looked over behind me and Shonna was standing there watching the ABB. Patterson showed up some few minutes later. I said thanks to Shonna for the DBT's keeping the spirit of real rock n roll alive and she returned the thanks. I also told her I would post to the list about the show and she said they keep up with the list as best they can from the road.

As for some of the other points, the DBT was strictly limited to the time they had on stage. Also, there is a noise ordinace and the ABB had to end at 11 PM. It was a great show all around as the ABB sounds as good as they have in years. Jessica was a tour de force with all elements of rock, blues, jazz and drumming integrated seamlessly. I'd love to see a date where the DBT and ABB would split up a 6 hour show. Now, that would be heaven.

Peace,

Bentz

We have yet another remarkable revelation of the mindset of Washington's ruling clique of neoconservative elites-the people who took us to war from the safety of their Beltway bunkers. Even as Iraq grows bloodier by the day, their passion of the week is to keep one of their own from going to jail.

It is well known that I. Lewis 'Scooter' Libby-once Vice President Cheney's most trusted adviser-has been sentenced to 30 months in jail for perjury. Lying. Not a white lie, mind you. A killer lie.

Scooter Libby deliberately poured poison into the drinking water of democracy by lying to federal investigators, for the purpose of obstructing justice."

New Orleans turns to international aid:

"NEW ORLEANS -- The cash-strapped city of New Orleans is turning to foreign countries for help to rebuild as federal hurricane-recovery dollars remain slow to flow.

Kenya Smith, director of intergovernmental relations for Mayor Ray Nagin, said city leaders are talking with more than five countries. He wouldn't identify the countries, saying discussions were in the early stages. But he said the city is 'very serious' about pursuing foreign help."

Toddler Served Margarita in a Sippy Cup

A toddler who was served a margarita at a restaurant earlier this week is doing well, and investigators say the incident appears to have been an accident. Police say 2-year-old Julian Mayorga ordered apple juice but instead received an alcoholic beverage in a covered, plastic sippy cup on Monday night at an Applebee's franchise in Antioch, between San Francisco and Sacramento.

The boy's mother, Kim Mayorga, said she noticed Julian making funny faces and pushing away his cup. She opened the lid and was hit by the smell of tequila and Triple Sec. The toddler grew drowsy and started vomiting a few hours later and was rushed to the hospital.

"I wasn't going to make a big deal about it," the mother said Thursday, "but then he got sick."

Campaign against alleged voter fraud fuels political tempest:

"WASHINGTON - For six years, the Bush administration, aided by Justice Department political appointees, has pursued an aggressive legal effort to restrict voter turnout in key battleground states in ways that favor Republican political candidates.

The administration intensified its efforts last year as President Bush's popularity and Republican support eroded heading into a midterm battle for control of Congress, which the Democrats won.

Facing nationwide voter registration drives by Democratic-leaning groups, the administration alleged widespread election fraud and endorsed proposals for tougher state and federal voter identification laws. Presidential political adviser Karl Rove alluded to the strategy in April 2006 when he railed about voter fraud in a speech to the Republican National Lawyers Association."

'The kid was lying on the street and she was walking away,'' Casciato said."

Endangered turtles swim Pacific in "race":

"SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Reuters) - Eleven leatherback turtles are swimming across the Pacific Ocean to the Galapagos Islands in a 'race' that will be tracked online to draw attention to the plight of the endangered creatures.

The turtles have been tagged with satellite communication devices that give their positions as they head south from their nesting sites on Costa Rica's Playa Grande beach to feeding grounds near the Galapagos, about 950 miles away.
.....

Environmentalists say 95 percent of leatherbacks in the Pacific Ocean have vanished in the last 20 years due to human activity like fishing, poaching of their eggs and building near their nests, and they could become extinct in the next decade."

A dash of politics today, albeit humorous... sorta.... Fucking breeders.

Stats say the GOP is dying. But red-staters are breeding like drunken ferrets. Who wins?:

"Here's the good news: The Republican party is dying. Slow, painful, twitching, secreting war and intolerance and desperation like a fetid gas, snarling and gagging like Jabba the Hutt being choked by the hard chain of progress and hope and relaxed social mores and an upcoming Generation Next that seems to sense that screaming about gays and women's rights and Muslims and drugs actually doesn't do much to move the human experiment forward in the slightest.

Is this not delicious? Is this not cause for rejoicing? According to Pew Research, the percentage of young 'uns age 18 to 25 (a.k.a. Generation Next) who identify with Republicans has been in steady decline since the early '90s, and now hovers around a meager 35 percent, down from a high of 55 percent in the Reagan-toxic early-90s, and is still dropping, whereas fully 48 percent of 18-to-25-year-olds now lean Democratic ... and rising."

You Can Throw Me in the Stephen Colbert Co. Jailhouse

Is it.....

Or is it....

I've had the pleasure... nay, displeasure, of spending the night in a Colbert County Jailhouse. The next morning my grits were served to me ice cold. Now, I realize that I was in jail, but I was still in the south and you just don't serve a man cold grits... It's not christian.

Comedy show crews due in Shoals on Wednesday:
"TUSCUMBIA -- The grand opening of the area's newest museum is set for Wednesday.

If you want to see it, you'd better do it quickly, because the museum will close a day later.

It's all part of a plot line for Comedy Central's 'The Colbert Report.'

The show, which airs at 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday on the national cable network, is a parody of cable news shows.

Before we get into which Republican has committed a crime against nature today, I want to throw a shout out to my first ever visitor from the Islamic Republic of Iran, coming from Ertebat Net Co Of Sabzevar! What's up! How's the weather. Hotter than a motherfucker, I suppose. I won't drop the search term you used to find this site **cough** penis **cough** ass, but I've got to say, you better be careful, bro (I'm assuming its a bro because, well, they don't let the ladies do too much over there). Those words, separate, could get you thrown in the pokey (bet they don't serve cold grits in Iranian jails.) but together, you're looking at having some appendages removed.

Of course, who am I to talk. Since I wrote "Iran" "Islamic" and "Sabzevar" in my post, I'm sure BushCo will know more about me than I do in a few minutes. If they are visiting the site right now, I just want to give a big FUCK YOU to them. With much love.

"BAGHDAD (AFP) - At least 17 US soldiers have been killed around Iraq since Saturday, including eight in a single day in Baghdad, the US military announced, saying the toll had brought 'a tragic day'."

Foley attorney claims client abused as child:
"He also announced that Foley’s actions are connected to his own abuse by a Catholic priest as an adolescent boy, and confirmed that the congressman is indeed a homosexual, a fact which was suspected long before the internet sex scandal was made public."
And why the fuck is 'is indeed a homosexual' a part of the story? I'll tell you why, because it is one more opportunity for the Republicans to slam homosexuals by tying them to a child predator. Fucking sleaze balls.

But why should I be surprised. Look what O'Lielly did yesterday:

O'Reilly graphic labels Foley (D-Florida) !!!!!!

Blame it on the Dems by any means necessary, huh O'Lielly? Fucktard.

DBT Week in Review - 8/11/06

Wilson Dam

They done gone and fucked up Wilson Dam.

As you all know Wilson Dam plays a prominent role in the lyrics of several DBT songs; Never Gonna Change, Uncle Frank, Thank God for the TVA, etc. The locks of the dam are where when Jason was 15 his girlfriend let him put his "hand up under her shirt" (TG for the TVA).

Recently, a barge made a major fuck up in one of the locks and damn near contaminated (even more) a good stretch of the Tennessee River. Here's the story: Barge strikes lock; river traffic halted.

I received a forwarded email soon after from my good friend Billy Ray Casteel (need lumber? Call Billy Ray) with some attached pictures of the debacle. I'm posting them here with the commentary from the email. Text and pictures come from an Alan August:
"This happened early morning, August 3, 2006. Now all barge traffic is stopped on the Tennessee River. Traffic is stopped from crossing the Wilson Dam due to the threat of explosion of toluene in the barges.

Evidently the tug operator nor the lock operator were paying attention and did not see the end of one of the barges get under the upper lock gate as the water level in the lock was being raised.

When the water level got high enough the barge lifted the upper gate out of its track. Now the gate want go back down.

This is the gate which goes down about 30 feet and the barges float over it to get out of the lock.

These barges are filled with toluene and are double hulled so nothing has spilled even though one hull has been breeched."

See more on Wilson Damn and the locks at the "River Lore" post.

Ed Burns Has Taste...:
On 8/5/06, Chris Cline wrote:

Looks like we may hear the song in this movie then?
NPR and DBT

NPR has been showing much love for the Truckers:

NPR : Drive-By Truckers: Rock Southern Style:
"Mike Cooley, Patterson Hood, Jason Isbell, Brad Morgan, John Neff and Shonna Tucker are the Drive-By Truckers.

They visited NPR's Studio 4A to play some tunes and talk about their latest album, and what it's like to be pegged as the heirs to Lynyrd Skynyrd -- the next great southern rock band. They also talk about the recurring theme in their music of self destruction, and their Southern roots."
"Can't we all just get along" and play some music

TimesDaily recently had a good article on the recording studios in the Shoals and how they created a place of racial harmony. See, there ARE a lot of good folks down there, Neil Young just wasn't around.

Panel: Studios were a source of harmony in tense times:
"Hood said he was a 'city slicker,' who grew up in Sheffield and worked in his father's tire store.

Hood said all his favorite music growing up was performed by black artists and his goal was to one day work with them.

'There was no color coming from the radio,' Hood said. 'To me, it was just good music"

Oh, boy, the morality police are at it again: Sexual Lyrics Prompt Teens to Have Sex

Here's a good response to such silliness:

Devil's Music Made Me Have Sex! / This just in: Raunchy lyrics make teens all hot 'n' bothered. Led Zeppelin sighs:
"See, there is this new study. Yet another one that claims that teens who listen to lots of sexually explicit music full of 'degrading' lyrics are much more likely to have sex sooner then those who listen to, say, church hymns and banjo music and Carrie Underwood preening her way through 'Jesus Take the Wheel.' I know, it's shocking."
Lynam

Finally, today, I want to introduce you to a dirty little secret of mine. The band is called Lynam and they hail from Birmingham, Alabama. I was turned onto them by my good friend Mary Mac who is a good friend of the drummer.

I'd have to define their music as Slutty Rock. They pay homage to the sounds of their youth and the sounds that influenced their style. From the band's MySpace page:
Influences: Arena Rock, Bluegrass, Steely Dan, Mutt Lange, Mike Shipley

Sounds Like: If Def leppard, Weezer and Guns N Roses started a band together.
They've recently jumped to a major label and released one seriously fun Rock album called Slave to the Machine.

On the track, Giving up on Rock n Roll, they pay lyrical homage to Van Halen, White Snake, GnR, Def Lep., Skid Row, Motley Crue, Poison, AND MTV's musical hook.

In this album Lynam borrows several riffs and sounds from that era of Rock, but they aren't doing it maliciously or are attempting to fool you into thinking that they created this sound. Lynam is simply reintroducing a sound that has great influence on them and has, in some quarters, been unfairly demonized by the Rock Gestapo. They are tackling this issue in the same manner that SRO tackled the "Southern Rock" misconception. They ain't as deep or serious but just as much fun.

Here are some web links to get acquianted with this power trio:

Go buy this disk, throw it in the car stereo, crank it up as far as possible and take a road trip somewhere. I promise you'll be head banging and fist pumping in no time.
