Hello, folks. Having a sit-down on the new couch, watching the Braves tear up San Fran, thinking I should let you all know how things have been going lately.

First and foremost, we're very excited about the Music for Marines benefit at the Shoals Theatre Wednesday night. It's for a great cause, and Sons of Roswell and Barrelmouth will be playing with us, both bands chock full of Greenhill natives, so you should really try to come out.

My old cohorts, the Drive-By Truckers (still don't know if that hyphen should be there or not) are playing the same venue on Thursday and Friday night, and I'm really happy about the fact that they're playing a hometown show. I think it'll be great for the area and the local scene, and it could go a long way toward establishing the Theatre as a real music venue. Cheers to them, for sure. I won't be able to make those shows, much to my chagrin, as we have to leave for K.C. on Thursday evening. Ya'll go, though, and let me know how it turns out. I'm sure it'll be great.

Want to give a special thanks to Zack Gooch for joining us on last weekend's run through Colorado and Utah. He did a fantastic job and we truly had a great time hanging out and making music with him.

Our distinguished guitarist, Browan, has a website up now for his incredible artwork, www.browanlollar.com, and I strongly suggest you check it out. He has some great stuff, and his paintings are pretty good, too, if you know what I mean.

On the personal front, I just finished a move back across the river to Sheffield, and I'm very happy about the living quarters. I'm sure to be playing a ton of pool when I'm home, so if you're game, come join me at the room. You know the one, I'm sure. Just make sure you bring enough dough to cover your losses (or your bar tab). I got stiffed last week, and I'm still pissed about it.

We're smack dab in the middle of the W.C. Handy Blues festival, so I may be out this week, sitting in with some friends. I'll try to remember to put a notice up on Twitter regarding where I'll be in case anybody wants to come see. Happy summer to everybody.

About three months ago, something questionable happened on campus at the University of Alabama.

In a nutshell, a white fraternity paraded past a black sorority house as the women were taking part in an alumni celebration. The element in question is the fact that the fraternity members were marching with rebel flags and confederate war uniforms, all in the name of what the fraternity calls an “old south” celebration.

I have been waiting to see if the university would reprimand the fraternity before I tore into my premeditated rant. The fraternity has issued a public apology, but to my knowledge, this appears to have been pushed under the rug by the University of Alabama. I also think it is important to note that UGA and Auburn have in years past either eliminated or scaled back their Greek “old south” celebrations due to similar circumstances.

I love the University of Alabama, and I love the south. It disgusts me to see that MSNBC picked up on this story and once again, Alabama, specifically the University, is in the spot light of racial insensitivity.

The Associated Press: Jackson Browne, Republicans settle case:

"LOS ANGELES — Sen. John McCain and the Republican Party are apologizing to Jackson Browne for using one of his songs during last year's presidential campaign.

The GOP is also vowing to get artists' permission before using musicians' work in future political campaigns.

The apology and pledge were released Tuesday along with an announcement of a settlement with Browne over a federal copyright infringement lawsuit filed last year in Los Angeles. Browne sued McCain and the national and Ohio Republican parties for using part of his song 'Running on Empty' to mock Democrat Barack Obama's proposed energy policies in a Web ad.

Financial details of the settlement weren't disclosed."

Beastie Boy Adam Yauch has cancer; tour canceled, album pushed back (Backstage Pass) - Newsday.com:

"The Beastie Boys have cancelled all their upcoming tour dates, including their headlining spot at the All Points West Festival next week, and pushed back their 'Hot Sauce Committee Part 1' album, after Adam Yauch was diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland.

In a video statement (below) released this morning, Yauch said the cancer is treatable and will not affect his voice. He will have surgery next week to remove the tumor and will need several weeks of further treatment.

'It's a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because I was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later,' Yauch said in a statement.

No word yet from All Points West organizers on how the cancellation will be handled."

While Page is a member of the Order of the British Empire, Plant now outranks him with his new title of Commander of the British Empire.

Plant didn't seem to think this really mattered. 'If we can remember each other's phone number at this time in life it's a miracle,' he said. 'We're still good friends, we both enjoy a rather dark sense of humour that comes, I think, from being on the wrong side of the tracks for all those wild years.'"

Collapse in illegal sharing and boom in streaming brings music to executives' ears | Music | The Guardian:

"The picture may be more complex than a simple shift from filesharing to streaming, with people sharing music in new ways such as via bluetooth technology, on blogs, and through copying, also known as ripping content from friends' MP3 devices.

Even though users of streaming services are not necessarily buying more music, the industry benefits by learning more about fans' tastes. Steve Purdham, CEO and founder of We7, a music streaming service and download store, said: 'They may not buy an album, though they have that opportunity, but you can sell them tour tickets and a T-shirt of their favourite band.'"

"Two things we can all agree on:
1. We all love Michael Jackson
2. We’re all glad he’s not our uncle.

I was 18 and working at a record store in Florence, Ala., in the fall of 1982 when Thriller was released. At the time, it was considered the inferior follow-up to his 1979 solo breakthrough Off The Wall. It had that weak McCartney collaboration as a first single. Then again, it also had “Billie Jean” and “Beat It,” although neither of those had become ubiquitous by then. The elements were all there, but he hadn’t quite moonwalked into our collective consciousness yet. The Vincent Price thing seemed like a campy diversion, and Human Nature sounded like fucking Toto. Oh wait, it was fucking Toto."

‘Insane’ file-sharing verdict could challenge law’s constitutionality

Richard Marx “Ashamed” He’s Linked To $1.92 Million RIAA Fine Against Minnesota Mom : Rolling Stone : Rock and Roll Daily:

"Last week a judge ruled Minnesota mom Jammie Thomas-Rasset owes the RIAA a $1.92 million fine for illegally downloading 24 songs. Richard Marx — one of the artists whose music Thomas-Rasset downloaded via P2P network Kazaa — is now speaking out against the court’s verdict, saying he’s “ashamed” to be associated with the massive fine.

“As a longtime professional songwriter, I have always objected to the practice of illegal downloading of music. I have also always, however, been sympathetic to the average music fan, who has been consistently financially abused by the greedy actions of major labels,” Marx said in a statement. “These labels, until recently, were responsible for the distribution of the majority of recorded music, and instead of nurturing the industry and doing their best to provide the highest quality of music to the fans, they predominantly chose to ream the consumer and fill their pockets.”"

New Lineup, new record and more things coming.... - lauderdale MySpace Blog:

"So it's 2009 and we've been pretty low key for a few months now.
The band has been rehearsing and recording with what I believe to be our strongest lineup to date. Along with Daniel's addition as second guitarist last year, we've recently added Ben Tanner on keys and Chris James (former Sons of Roswell) on bass. These guys both bring so much to the table and are valuable assets to the band. Lauderdale is a 5-piece band for the first time. I think it's safe to say I speak for everyone involved when I say that the new sound is better than ever. Tracking on the second album started last week and was a very pleasant experience. Because we all have jobs, school and families this will more that likely be a slow moving process. We will hopefully be able to put the record out early this summer. We'll keep you posted for sure. In the meantime, keep an eye on our show schedule, as we are planning on coming to your town this summer. We've added a few dates and will be adding lots more very soon.

How cool is this. If my love for the band wasn't so great, my jealousy would be overwhelming.

Via Chris P.

D.C. stop for Drive-By Truckers :

"Jim Messina, deputy chief of staff to President Obama, is a fan of the band and attended the party at the band's invitation, frontman Patterson Hood said from the band's tour bus, now on its way to New Haven, Conn.

'We met Jim in New York in November when we played the two nights there right after the election,' Hood said. 'He spent his off days going to both Drive-By Truckers shows. So we've just been getting to know him a little bit.'

Apparently Messina's not the only Truckers fan in the nation's capital - the band was invited to play one of the inaugural balls on Tuesday night, as well. But the band already had signed on to play the party and wasn't able to do both.

'So we kinda ended up missing out on an opportunity to actually play for Obama,' Hood said."

Booker T Jones on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads:

"The album rolls through a selection of far-ranging compositions, each separate and distinct pieces that, by turn, manifest his characteristic adoration of the groove, exploring and exploiting each mood to the limit. Whether it's a case of cosmological serenity or funky staccato chicken peck work-outs, Jones' melodic vision and expansive arrangements are delivered with a mesmerizing quality. The album also pushes into sometime previously unvisited-by Jones territory: lead track 'Pound It Out' is a brawny, relentless exercise in hard rock, an intense, driving song that's far more of a head-banger than a blast of steam-heated soul.

If that seems out of place, you don't really know Mr. Jones; 'I like rock music, always have.' he said. 'Otis [Redding] did too, and we were getting into it a bit, but couldn't really do it back then. It just wasn't right for Stax.' The statement is more than a bit provocative, but the musician tosses out such revelations like carelessly hurled thunderbolts, an arsenal accrued over the course of his remarkable career."

"Mr. Wexler was something of a paradox. A businessman with tireless energy, a ruthless streak and a volatile temper, he was also a hopeless music fan. DBT!.... In Europe

Uncut.co.uk | Uncut Editor's Diary - Post details: The Drive-By Truckers, London Electric Ballroom, August 4 2008:

"Interestingly, they’ve come to the DBTs via the recent Brighter Than Creation’s Dark, several of them mentioning Andrew Muller’s Album Of The Month review in Uncut and how his claims for the record made them want to test his contention that, among other things, here was a synthesis of Lynryrd Skynyrd’s authenticity and virtuosity, The Replacement’s whiskey-sodden wit, the social conscience of Bruce Springsteen and the righteous fury of Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Unanimously, they’ve been amazed that the record lived up to the advance billing, which they had probably suspected was bluster and hyperbole. They now can’t wait to see if the band can deliver live, which when I bump into some of the same people on the way out, they all, grinningly, agree they do, spectacularly."

Fiddleworms

Good friend Russell Mefford sent me the Fiddleworms new record, Volkswagen Catfish, this week and it's a goodie.

Corey Hannah over at Nine Bullets beat me to the write-up punch early this week and posted the following on this very fine Florence, Alabama band.

I spent many a fun night back in the mid-90s partying to the live tunes of the first incarnation of the Fiddleworms. I'm real happy they've come back stronger than ever.

NINEBULLETS Blog Archive Rob Malone Still Truckin’ with the Fiddleworms:

"After leaving the Drive-By Truckers, Rob Malone moved back to the Shoals to reform Fiddleworms with Russell Mefford. They released an album called Year of the Cock a few years ago. Browan Lollar, of Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, did the artwork for that album.

I was interning at The Nutthouse Recording Studio in Sheffield earlier this year when Jimmy Nutt started mixing the new Fiddleworms record. I knew from the moment I heard the unmixed tracks that this was going to be a great album. If you guys will look at your liner notes, you’ll see that Jimmy engineered Jason’s album, Sirens of the Ditch. He also worked beside David Barbe on The Dirty South. Jimmy’s a helluva engineer and producer. The combination of him working with the Worms came together to make a record that does Muscle Shoals proud."

Always on your mind ... | TimesDaily.com | Florence, AL:

"When Russell Mefford was a kid, he thought the platform-wearing, tongue-wagging members of KISS were like superheroes. Not only that, they came bearing gifts, temporary tattoos. 'Every record that you bought from them, you got something from them,' he said. Mefford is lead guitarist and vocalist for Shoals band, The Fiddleworms, which satisfies their fans with T-shirts and stickers. Thanks to Gene, Peter, Ace and Paul, they also included temporary tattoos inside of their last CD."

3. Lynyrd Skynyrd, "Sweet Home Alabama," 1,346,000. This zesty 1974 hit is the oldest recording on the list. (The ‘50s and ‘60s are officially ancient history to today's downloading pop fans.) Kid Rock's current radio hit, "All Summer Long," which pays homage to the song, is just the latest boost that it has gotten. The song has been featured in several movies, including the Oscar-winning 1994 smash Forrest Gump. It even provided the title for a 2002 rom-com starring Reese Witherspoon. DBT Week in Review - 8/8/08

DBT!

Axe Victim - London Review

It's been some four years since DBT last graced a London stage. I missed them back then, but last night at the Electric Ballroom I was practically on stage with the band the view was so good from my vantage point, stage left, positioned at the top of a set of stairs that were at the same height as the stage. And they owned the room that was packed to the rafters with the 600 or so faithful followers who had come to witness one of the hardest working rock bands give a rock show of the highest order. And for a mere £16.00 they delivered a near perfect two hour set that trawled the very best from the band's exemplary back catalogue of seven studio albums including two double albums worth of material.

Belly Up to Simon's and Sweet Six Bullets : Music : Anderson Independent-Mail:

"The band draws comparisons to the Drive-By Truckers, both in their music and lyrics, so it’s no surprise the band covers several Truckers songs to help fill in their sets. Cook said Truckers covers like “Lookout Mountain” and “Where the Devil Don’t Stay” come across well, but the band isn’t afraid to journey into pure country songs like “Midnight in Montgomery” by Alan Jackson."

Patterson posted a great tour diary that's a must read. Here's one of many highlights.

Drive-By Truckers:

"The mood was, however, lightened up significantly a few hours before show time when Shonna broke into the room while Cooley was taking a shower, stealing all of his clothes and leaving in their place a red dress she had recently purchased. Cooley had been (has always been) playing a crude sort of practical joke on all aboard and had evidently violated a sort of ceasefire agreement they had struck so she retaliated, causing Cooley to have to ride down the elevator, walk through the lobby and proceed about two blocks wearing Shonna's red dress. Shonna, of course tipped us all off so we could have cameras, camcorders and various other recording devices ready to capture the moment for posterity. (Watch for it on YouTube).

The scariest part is how well Cooley actually looks in a red dress. It is definitely time for me to go home."

The Chicken Doves : Rolling Stone:

"Quietly, while Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have been inspiring Democrats everywhere with their rolling bitchfest, congressional superduo Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have completed one of the most awesome political collapses since Neville Chamberlain. At long last, the Democratic leaders of Congress have publicly surrendered on the Iraq War, just one year after being swept into power with a firm mandate to end it.

Solidifying his reputation as one of the biggest pussies in U.S. political history, Reid explained his decision to refocus his party's energies on topics other than ending the war by saying he just couldn't fit Iraq into his busy schedule. 'We have the presidential election,' Reid said recently. 'Our time is really squeezed.'"

DBT Week in Review - 8/17/07

A couple of pictures and a show review from Tequila Brad.

Sunday night, workweek looming on the horizon, but Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are finally in Denton, and there is no way I am gonna miss this one. Yeah, it's at Hailey's, but I'm going anyway. For those of you not familiar with this particular venue, let me try and explain. Most of you do know, that I try and video record the shows I attend. Hailey's is NOT video friendly. Imagine, if you will, trying to video, in a cave, with only nightlights for illumination. They DO have some spots, but they are trained at about groin level. So either they regularly have "little people" performing there, or perhaps they were having a "package parade" across the main stage, at some earlier point. Who knows?

All that aside, it was Jason Isbell, I HAD to go!! Centro put on a hell of a show, with Jason on guitar for their entire set. When it was time for Jason, he started with Down in a Hole, but the sound was awful. Did I mention that the sound at Hailey's usually sucks too? Then, after they fixed the low hum, they kicked into Grown, Never Gonna Change, Goddamn Lonely Love, and Try. Then Jason played In A Razor Town, and Dress Blues. He then turned the mic over to Browan Lollar for (I believe) Run Runaway. Then over to the keys for Chicago Promenade, with Scotty Danbom taking over about midway through the song, and then staying on for Danko Manuel. We were also treated to Outfit, Please Be With Me, Brand New Kind Of Actress. Jason sang a song by himself, but I didn't recognize it. If anyone else was there, and knows what it is, please let me know. Then Jason called up Scott and Brent for a rocking rendition of Atlantic City. Then they closed with a 10 minute long Decoration Day.

Every ass was thoroughly kicked, and sent home bruised and bleeding. Make sure to get out for your abuse, when Jason comes through your town, you deserve it!

Tequila Brad

Thankee, Brad!

dbts : Message: Re:Allmans, DBTs and MOFRO
....
During the ABB band show, I looked over behind me and Shonna was standing there watching the ABB. Patterson showed up some few minutes later. I said thanks to Shonna for the DBT's keeping the spirit of real rock n roll alive and she returned the thanks. I also told her I would post to the list about the show and she said they keep up with the list as best they can from the road.

As for some of the other points, the DBT was strictly limited to the time they had on stage. Also, there is a noise ordinace and the ABB had to end at 11 PM. It was a great show all around as the ABB sounds as good as they have in years. Jessica was a tour de force with all elements of rock, blues, jazz and drumming integrated seamlessly. I'd love to see a date where the DBT and ABB would split up a 6 hour show. Now, that would be heaven.

Peace,

Bentz

Still, lest you think this some idle flight of Wu fancy, the Clan have stepped their game up, enlisting none other than Dhani Harrison-- the 29-year-old son of 'Guitar''s late scribe, George Harrison-- to play acoustic on the track.
