Gretsch Guitar Signed by all Members of DBT to be Auctioned - Drive-By Truckers's MySpace Blog |

_______

Best review of the year and English is the writer's 2nd language AND this is the first time writer has seen the mighty DBT. American music 'writers' take note:

rockerparis: Drive-by Truckers @ L' Album de la Semaine Canal , Paris April 28th 8:00PM:
"Back at the famous Canal tv show L' Album de la Semaine to see , completely unknown over here, American band from Alabama ( and based in Georgia) Drive-By truckers."

Drive-By Truckers deliver big tales worth stopping for - Go! Magazine | ColumbiaTribune.com:
"Driven largely by the stirring writing of Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, “The Big To-Do” is an album with evocative mini-narratives and tight yet unrestrained sound that grow more resonant by the listen, proving DBT the rare band that can string together 13 tracks without a single second of filler. One of the best records so far this year, it burnishes their reputation as first-rate rockers sensitive enough to color their songs with a cinematic brush."

Bettye LaVette

Great read but just a little bit more actual research needed. Not hard to do.

Bettye's new record is going to be the absolute tits, ya'll.

Leonce Gaiter: Bettye LaVette: The High Priestess of R&B, Too Long Ignored:
"Then someone comes along and reminds me of what we can do in other forms. Bettye LaVette has been around since she was a teenager in the early sixties, largely ignored. She never, as she put it, 'crossed over.' Opportunities were lost, missed, unrecognized or unfulfilled. Then, in 2005 she released 'I've Got My Own Hell to Raise.' The great Joe Henry produced. The songs came from a slew of fine female writers: Aimee Mann, Dolly Parton, Joan Armatrading, Lucinda Williams. Immediately, that voice slapped you. Unashamedly aged, rough, ragged and under absolute control. On the song 'Just Say So,' she proved that she could find depths of longing and desperation in a lyric that the songwriters probably didn't even know existed.

She then released the brilliant 'Scene of the Crime' with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section."

_______

ANTI- Bettye LaVette Invited By Robert Plan To Open On His July Tour:
"The stars are aligning for Bettye LaVette and the May 25 release of Interpretations: The British Rock Songboo, as Robert Plant has invited Bettye to open for his July tour. Bettye's 3rd album for Anti-, and the follow-up to her Grammy-nominated Scene of the Crime, is earning considerable praise from both the press and her artist peers, and she’s already booked for a performance on The Late Show with David Letterman for June 23.

The request to join the legendary Led Zeppelin vocalist on tour is not so much a notch in Bettye's belt as it is another link in the chain: Her latest work is an impassioned dissertation on the much-documented influence that American blues and soul had on British rock n' roll – but more than that, it's an exploration of how those echoes from a foreign shore in turn influenced and reshaped American blues and soul. Fittingly, Bettye’s rendition of the Led Zeppelin classic “All My Love,” will premiere exclusively on AOL’s “Spinner” April 27."

Diabetic and sleeveless. Classic.

DUDE, DON’T DIE. | The People's Music:
"Bret seems like a nice guy and has always done what most any other average American guy would do given the opportunity and selection of cowboy hats. In fact, Bret is America. He’s diabetic, sleeveless, and just trying to get back to his success from the 80’s. Bret Michaels is Mr. America, which is all the more reason he cannot die while under contract with Donald Trump."

OK, I'm ready to take you on now... what, you're quitting?

A-ha Breaking Up After Three Decades Together | PopEater.com:
"A-ha are ending their 30-year run.

The '80s band, who gave us the memorable video for their greatest hit 'Take on Me,' have decided to call it quits, EOnline.com reports.

Morten Harket, Magne Furuholmen and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy will tour one last time together this year, but it will be their last."
_______

Pitchfork: Record Store Day Sets, Uh, Records:
"Billboard reports that according to Nielsen Soundscan, this year's Record Store Day marked the biggest single day for vinyl sales in the history of Soundscan, which started counting things in 1991. According to Billboard, RSD's co-founder, the Music Monitor Network's Michael Kurtz, also reports that stores including New York City's Other Music, Seattle's Sonic Boom, and New Jersey's Vintage Vinyl, had their most successful days ever. And sales were up all across the board.

Good work, people."
_______

Beer

Went to high school with Dale. Yet to get my hands on any of his brew.

50 Beers to Try Before You Die - The Early Show - CBS News:
"Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale - $9 (6-pack cans)
Packed with tons of citrus from a heavy dose of American hops, this is the quintessential stateside IPA. Like most pale ales, it's on the hoppier side-which means its slightly bitter and sour. You know hops when you taste em. However, it's not as hoppy as a IPA (Indian Pale Ale). And we really like the can, which makes it easily transportable, great to bring to a picnic or barbecue or the beach. Technically speaking, beer lasts longer in a can because no light is allowed in."

Drive-By Truckers miss their last exit, have a 'Happy Ending' - USATODAY.com:
"'When we go to see the Truckers play, we wear diapers so we don't have to go to the bathroom,' declares a young female fan early on in The Secret to a Happy Ending, a documentary about Southern rock band the Drive-By Truckers.

Similar devotion to the Athens, Ga.-based Truckers led Washington, D.C.-area filmmaker Barr Weissman to spend nearly six years making what he calls 'a love letter to rock 'n' roll.'"

"Did you grow up in a union home (or ever belong to a union yourself), or was work an important part of your upbringing?

MC: My dad was a Teamster for a few years. He drove dump trucks, hauling asphalt and gravel.

PH: My dad and I have both been members of the musicians union. My dad has been there for over 40 years. I was also partly raised by my great uncle who was a Teamster. He drove trucks for International Harvester from 1946 through 1976. I have very strong working-class roots, even though my dad is a lifelong musician. The classic Lynyrd Skynyrd lineup may have perished in that awful plane crash, but the band left behind a fine legacy for Drive-by Truckers, the band that would define what it was like to grow up in the South in their wake. This 2001 'Southern Rock Opera' tells Patterson Hood's semi-autobographical tale through the constant touchstone of the Skynyrd legend. Sample song title: 'Shut Up and Get on the Plane.'"

It’s the first one I’ve heard of theirs in a few years, for some unknown reason. Talk about underrated bands. The Dexateens have been around for many years and absolutely rock, but don’t seem to get much attention from the music press. They should. Try ‘em out if you haven’t. The Drive-By Truckers aren’t the only vital band from Alabama.

_______

A Valentine's Day To-Do - see the Drive-By Truckers in Knoxville:
"'In the studio is when we typically have a really good time,” Cooley said. 'Going out and touring is fun, and we really get off on it, but it's the job — or at least, for us it's the closest we get to a grind. But when we're looking for something new, going into the studio and getting to hang out with each other without all of the soundchecks and this and that is something we look forward to. Because if you write songs, your favorite song is always the next one.'"

"“Once you get to that bridge, sometimes it's a lot longer and shakier and sometimes made out of rope. But you've got to get across it. And once you do — once you achieve tolerance — you can get back to all of the respect and chemistry and natural things that make it happen in the first place."

The first great 21st century film made about a 21st century subject, Lee's movie was a meditation on New York and America, and it captured for all time the spiritual misery and confusion that followed that tragedy. There are very few songs about a mischievous elf getting Santa out of the way so as to put the moves on Mrs. Claus.

And this is why the Drive-By Truckers are great."

Swear I'm not Paul: Interview: Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers:

"My year end and decade end lists are coming up very shortly. You should expect the Drive-By Truckers to feature on both (especially the decade end one). So imagine my delight at being able to interview Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers. Here is what he had to say about returning to Ireland, new albums The Big To-Do and Go Go Boots, his favourite lyrics, his early band Adam's House Cat, working with Booker T, and even selected his favourite albums of the decade."

Yet another music blogger

Here's some dude who fails to inform folks that his new music blog is up and running.

Listen, Grumbine, this ain't the fancy, la-te-da world of television where your audience is captive and drooling. This is the bare knuckle world of blogging. Self promotion is king.

Anyway, unlike this blog, the motherfucker curses a lot, but he does know his musical shit. Such language, though.

Dexateens Sake of the Song:

"Elliott McPherson is the co-writer/front man of Alabama rock and roll band the Dexateens. He made his first “Lightbox” in a last-minute effort to complete an album cover for the band’s self-titled release in 2004. That first Lightbox featured the same headphones that McPherson had used as a child to “listen to the rock and roll that my parents forbade me to listen to.” Since then, every Dexateens release has borne a Lightbox on its cover, and McPherson has assembled hundreds more. McPherson supports his family with a kitchen and bath cabinetry business that he and his wife run together. “I really love the craft of cabinetry and it did me a lot of good to learn that discipline, but I prefer the freedom and randomness of building Lightboxes”. Elliott resides in Buhl, Alabama with his wife, Eva, and their two boys, Caleb and Gray."

"“It’ll probably do better and also boost sales of the first,” says music critic Peter Grumbine, who believes the genius of the series and soundtrack is introducing younger listeners to the original songs. “Kids hear Glee’s version of ‘Dancing with Myself’ and start digging into more Billy Idol. It exposes them to music they might not otherwise hear.”"

DBT Week in Review - 11/06/09

Here is a great discussion thread of about 11 pages from the Timesdaily sent to me by CH/Zoid.

Great insight into.... shit, several of DBT/Isbell songs regarding the area of the country we grew up in. I ran with some of the sons of the folks mentioned here and worked for a few others.

One crazy ass part of the world. Sometimes I wonder how I'm still walking around.

And yes, Dawson = Lawson. (Correction: I've been notified that Dawson does not equal Lawson, which is another can of local shit. Should have checked my source, dammit!)

Words from the Hood:

Drive-By Truckers:

"Decompressing from our late October run.
Very happy with the shows on all levels.
Don't think the band has ever played better than we have in the last six months.
As we are winding down The Righteous Path Tour of shows and starting to gear up for next years' new releases and tours, we are all very excited about what we did this year in the studio and out on the road and really fired up about going out and playing these new songs next year.

This month, the band is tying up some loose ends and starting our preparations for next year.
We are about to announce our annual Athens GA / 40 Watt Homecoming Shows and annual Nuci's Space Benefit.
I'll go ahead and spill a few of the beans to y'all now:
The weekend will be Jan. 14th - 16th."

Live review: Drive-By Truckers at Stubb's | Austin Music Source

OK, I’m passing through the final stage of grief and find myself at acceptance at Jason Isbell’s having left the Drive-By Truckers, what, 17 years ago?

Thursday night’s show at Stubb’s, from Mike Cooley’s “Gravity’s Gone” to the last moments of Lynyrd Skynyrd rave-up “Angels and Fuselage,” which finished the encore because absolutely nothing else could follow it, was as good a show as I’ve seen them do since their third guitarist-singer-songwriter went solo. The aught-nine version of the band is decidedly funkier — that Muscle Shoals influence is burbling to the surface more. And a new one that bassist Shonna Tucker sang (from a spring release to be called “The Big To-Do”) sounded positively Motown.

But at their core these guys are Southern-fried chroniclers of hard-luck characters — Uncle John, he ain’t been right since Vietnam — and cemetary groundskeepers pondering a leap into the abyss. Uplifting, no? Good thing they can seriously rock. Guitarist-singer-songwriter-loquacious talker Patterson Hood took a lot of leads last night and all three guitarists seemed hell-bent on making as much racket as possible, no matter whom else they were fighting for solo space. I never saw Lynyrd Skynrd but I sure saw Drive-By Truckers. And I will again. Like the man said: Let there be rock.

But next time, guys, please play “Carl Perkins’ Cadillac.” Don’t make me grovel; it demeans us both.

Concert Review: Drive-By Truckers at House of Blues (October 28) | pegasusnews.com | Dallas / Fort Worth:

"The energy was so intense, I wondered what they could do for a satisfactory encore, and halfway through the first song I got my answer as Brent Best (Slobberbone and The Drams) ambled onto stage with a guitar in hand. But then, as four guitars were clearly not enough, bandmate Jess Barr showed up for the show closer, a rousing cover of Jim Carroll's 'People Who Died.'"

Flavorwire Blog Archive Chuck Klosterman Presents: Albums That Kick Writer’s Block:
"Drive-By Truckers, Southern Rock Opera

“In terms of using sparse language to explain complex ideas (and in terms of using straightforward music to express a sense of time and place), I can’t think of a better record than this. It always sounds totally real, and the details are thick (particularly about Bear Bryant, George Wallace, and Blue Oyster Cult). I probably listened to this CD 100 times while I was writing Downtown Owl. It was absolutely the single-biggest influence on that novel.”"

Very Extremely Dangerous Singles:

"But that hasn’t stopped him from launching his latest project, a series of limited-edition 45-rpm vinyl singles by the likes of Greg Dulli, Drive-By Truckers, Heartless Bastards and Wussy in tribute to the late Eddie Hinton. The first two 45s, covers of Hinton songs by Dulli and the Truckers, come out locally on Tuesday and nationally on Nov. 24.

Blase is pressing just 2,000 copies of each record. He figures half of that run will be sold through Shake It and its mail-order operation and half through other independent record stores. Ultimately he plans a set of 10 discs."

Excellent read:

pandagon.net

Raftery decides the switch is due to three factors: the emergence of late 90s/early 00s super-singable pop songs by Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys that are easy enough to sing that anyone feels comfortable trying, the popularity of “American Idol”, and the normalizing karaoke scene in “Lost In Translation”, a scene that really captures how karaoke works a lot better if people involved take their performances seriously, instead of doing a performance whose whole point is how you’re above all this. I think he’s on to something, but he doesn’t go far enough, though part of the reason is the culture changed even more since he was writing this book, which came out in 2008. I think it’s because Americans are increasingly putting a premium on fantasy and performance as valuable things, when in the past, these things were considered children’s fare that proper adults grow out of. (Unless they’re professionals, like actors or musicians.) And even though Raftery and I agree that “ironic” karaoke performances---where the person mocks the process of karaoke while performing---are stupid, I will say the ironic bent of American culture since really the late 60s on has a lot to do with this. It’s about playfulness, at its core, and once you start allowing and even requiring adults to be playful, then fantasy and performance are not far behind.

All we need is Blog?:

"Last night I went to my first arena concert in a very long time. I've pretty much sworn off big arena shows because they are overpriced and the prices charged for food and drink are insulting. The list of people I will pay over $50 to see live is very small and until last night Bruce Springsteen wasn't on that list. Last night I had two free tickets and the next time he comes around I will probably buy a ticket."

DBT Week in Review - 10/9/09

I'm swamped, y'all!

Not much DBT content this week, but next week I'll have a special Hardly Strictly post with video from Booker and DBT's set along with some other amazing stuff from other artists.

First time out with a new video camera, so lots to clean up. My rookieness will be apparent, but some good stuff to be seen. Mo' later.

Here are a couple of pics.

On stage (no shit. I could have picked up an instrument and played along) with Billy Joe Shaver.

And here's backstage at the main stage. This is quickly become on of the all time favorite pictures I've ever taken. I've got a big ass version on my MAC desktop and I find something new in the pic everyday.

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are on stage.

_______

Do have a bit of DBT for you.

Isn't this just a kick ass piece of art?

I'll let the artist explain. She posted this on DBT's Facebook page.

Lee Anne Vavra - Hi! I wanted to show you my "Sweet Annette" painting I just finished. I have the words to the song in the background and a dedication to DBT on the back. xo
Excellent, excellent work, Lee Anne!

OK, since you asked nice and all.....

Dexateens

NBA Playa Paul Shirley's got great taste in music, but he's off about Dexateen's studio work. That shit is the bomb.

Rain, lawn chairs test my limits at Austin - ESPN

I rush into the grounds with visions of greatness in my head. Chris has been raving about a band he helps manage, The Dexateens, for months. I've listened to two of their albums, but left each encounter with their recorded work thoroughly underwhelmed.

Lee Bains leans into the mike and says, "We're the Dexateens, and we're from Alabama." Thirty seconds later, I can tell that the Dexateens are what the kids call the real deal. I decide that the band needs to hire a new recording engineer because whatever it is that they are doing onstage has not yet been translated to an album. Aping the Drive-By Truckers' legendary Three-Axe Attack (which I've always wanted to write -- it means there are three guitars), the 'teens form a wall of dirty Southern rock sound that is complemented by the harmonizing of Bains, John Smith and Elliott McPherson. I like the band's sound. I like their happy, dancing bassist. I like that most of the group is driving to New Orleans for a show that night. And I really like that they have to be back in Alabama by tomorrow morning, because one of their members has to play in church.

_______

Rock Candy: Last night: The Dexateens

Thursday night, beneath the banner of the Arkansas state flag on the back wall of White Water’s stage sat Brian Gosdin, drummer for the Dexateens, BAMA emblazoned across his T-shirt, attending his houndstooth-adorned drum kit, just in case there was any confusion about where these boys hail from.

Typically, the Tuscaloosa country-rockers’ lineup has featured three guitarists, but last night, founding member John Smith was nowhere to be found. Pre-set, front man Lee Bains III admitted that Smith had abruptly split from the band not days ago, this just before their first showing at the Austin City Limits music festival. It was clear Smith’s exit had rocked them, but luckily for us, as musicians are wont to do, the Dexateens managed to unload all that anxiety into their show

Jason Molina and Will Johnson

Jason Molina and Will Johnson Collaborate on New LP, Plot European Tour

Call this the Phantoms of Folk. Call this two lone wolves running together for one dark blissout of a night. Two of the finest indie-folk songwriters of the last decade come together under the Texas sky to quietly lay to tape 14 crushing, haunting tunes, leaving space enough in each to match their surroundings. In this collaboration between Jason Molina and Will Johnson, each seem to hold the other’s talents to fire and elevate both performance and creativity. In the friendly sharing of ideas, Molina and Johnson become two poet’s poets in a workshop, aimed to craft a singular, searing elegy.

Will Johnson describes this alignment of two red stars: “For ten days we wrote, co-wrote, workshopped, complimented, scrutinized, drank, invited friends to come play music, smoked, made lots of notes and drawings, drank a little more and shot the BB gun off the back porch when we just needed some time and space. In the throes of all this, our record was made in the late February sun.”

By popular demand | TimesDaily.com | The Times Daily | Florence, AL:
"Donnie Fritts only had two conditions that had to be met before he agreed to perform a series of shows in Japan.

Because of his health, he needed a break between shows and he insisted he be joined by the The Decoys, the local rhythm-and-blues band that frequently serves as his backup band.

A Japanese concert promoter Fritts has known for more than 35 years agreed, and now Fritts and The Decoys will be taking Muscle Shoals R&B and funk to audiences in five Japanese cities beginning Saturday.

'I called him and told him what I had in mind,' Fritts said. 'I'd love to do some shows in Japan, but I had to bring The Decoys. I don't want to play with anyone else. I know these guys, we play well together and they know my songs.'"
