Singles Reviews: Dexateens, Cass McCombs, David Ball | American Songwriter:
"Dexateens – “Granddaddy’s Mouth”

An overcast tone sometimes still harbors a little optimism at the core. A pedal steel’s heartbroken whine is comforted by Elliott McPherson’s reassuring voice in a song that tries and fails to be modest. The Dexateens “can’t explain granddaddy’s mouth,” just like you can’t explain the subtle beauty of the song, but it’s there."

Drive-By Truckers deliver big tales worth stopping for - Go! Magazine | ColumbiaTribune.com:
"Driven largely by the stirring writing of Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, “The Big To-Do” is an album with evocative mini-narratives and tight yet unrestrained sound that grow more resonant by the listen, proving DBT the rare band that can string together 13 tracks without a single second of filler. One of the best records so far this year, it burnishes their reputation as first-rate rockers sensitive enough to color their songs with a cinematic brush."

Bettye LaVette

Great read but just a little bit more actual research needed. Not hard to do.

Bettye's new record is going to be the absolute tits, ya'll.

Leonce Gaiter: Bettye LaVette: The High Priestess of R&B, Too Long Ignored:
"Then someone comes along and reminds me of what we can do in other forms. Bettye LaVette has been around since she was a teenager in the early sixties, largely ignored. She never, as she put it, 'crossed over.' Opportunities were lost, missed, unrecognized or unfulfilled. Then, in 2005 she released 'I've Got My Own Hell to Raise.' The great Joe Henry produced. The songs came from a slew of fine female writers: Aimee Mann, Dolly Parton, Joan Armatrading, Lucinda Williams. Immediately, that voice slapped you. Unashamedly aged, rough, ragged and under absolute control. On the song 'Just Say So,' she proved that she could find depths of longing and desperation in a lyric that the songwriters probably didn't even know existed.

She then released the brilliant 'Scene of the Crime' with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section."

_______

ANTI- Bettye LaVette Invited By Robert Plan To Open On His July Tour:
"The stars are aligning for Bettye LaVette and the May 25 release of Interpretations: The British Rock Songboo, as Robert Plant has invited Bettye to open for his July tour. Bettye's 3rd album for Anti-, and the follow-up to her Grammy-nominated Scene of the Crime, is earning considerable praise from both the press and her artist peers, and she’s already booked for a performance on The Late Show with David Letterman for June 23.

The request to join the legendary Led Zeppelin vocalist on tour is not so much a notch in Bettye's belt as it is another link in the chain: Her latest work is an impassioned dissertation on the much-documented influence that American blues and soul had on British rock n' roll – but more than that, it's an exploration of how those echoes from a foreign shore in turn influenced and reshaped American blues and soul. Fittingly, Bettye’s rendition of the Led Zeppelin classic “All My Love,” will premiere exclusively on AOL’s “Spinner” April 27."

"Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale - $9 (6-pack cans)
Packed with tons of citrus from a heavy dose of American hops, this is the quintessential stateside IPA. Like most pale ales, it's on the hoppier side-which means its slightly bitter and sour. You know hops when you taste em. However, it's not as hoppy as a IPA (Indian Pale Ale). And we really like the can, which makes it easily transportable, great to bring to a picnic or barbecue or the beach. Technically speaking, beer lasts longer in a can because no light is allowed in."

It’s the first one I’ve heard of theirs in a few years, for some unknown reason. Talk about underrated bands. The Dexateens have been around for many years and absolutely rock, but don’t seem to get much attention from the music press. They should. Try ‘em out if you haven’t. The Drive-By Truckers aren’t the only vital band from Alabama.

This Sucks!

Roof collapses as Georgia Theatre burns in Athens | ajc.com:

"A major fire erupted Friday at the Georgia Theatre, an Athens landmark and center of the local music scene, police said.

The fire, which began around 7 a.m., inflicted major damage on the building.

Athens-Clarke County Fire Chief Chuck Gulley said the fire was contained but that the roof of the building had collapsed. He said there was no evidence that anyone was in the building when the fire broke out around 7 a.m."
I never got to attend a show at the GT, but I did spend a few nights sitting outside across from the old beauty during my Athens GA Getaway.

I know this place was near and dear to many a good friend. My heart goes out to y'all today.

But, knowing the folks in Athens, she won't stay down for long. She'll rise again.

Best part is nobody got hurt.

Hang in there, Athens!

________

Album review: Patterson Hood's 'Murdering Oscar (and Other Love Songs)' | Turn It Up - A guided tour through the worlds of pop, rock and rap:
"Rating: 3 stars

The second solo release by the founder of Southern roots-rockers the Drive-By Truckers was nearly two decades in the making. Hood began cobbling together songs in the early ‘90s, but “Murdering Oscar (and Other Love Songs)” (Ruth St.) doesn’t sound like an odds-and-sods collection."
_______

Aquarium Drunkard: Music Blog Diversions :: Patterson Hood on Back Lounge Days (And Nights):

"(Diversions, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.)

Murdering Oscar, the long delayed follow-up to Patterson Hood’s 2004 solo debut, Killers And Stars, will finally see the light of day June 23rd. Unlike the sparse, home-recorded, Killers And Stars, Hood’s new collection finds him in familiar company backed by Dave Barbe, Centro-matic’s Will Johnson and Scott Danborn, his father, the famed Muscle Shoals musician David Hood, as well as his DBT bandmates. In this edition of Diversions, Hood reflects on the musical going’s on in the back lounge. A noted voracious music fan with eclectic tastes, below Hood waxes on everything from the Clash to Syd Dale."
_______

Rollo & Grady Interview // Patterson Hood - Los Angeles Music Blog:

"When I spoke with Patterson last week, we discussed his excitement over the release of Murdering Oscar, his longtime relationship with Truckers guitarist Mike Cooley and big-box retailer deals."
_______

Nashville Music - Patterson Hood's solo album Murdering Oscar is a striking blast from the past - page 1:

"Hood came by his grunge sensibilities honestly. 'Nirvana broke wide open and became huge pretty much the exact same week that my '80s band Adam's Housecat broke up, and doing a kind of music and opening the door for a kind of music selling records that I'd spent pretty much the '80s doing,' he says.

But there's a reason why it's not a sound that people generally associate with Hood's musical ventures, while loose, muscular Southern rock is. 'I was running like hell from it by the time the Truckers started,' he says. 'Because I had seen what happened in the wake of all of that. There were so many bad bands that came along in the wake of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. After that, all the sudden it was Bush and Nickelback.'

Murdering Oscar is an occasion for contemplating why musical styles, songs or life perspectives end up falling by the wayside. 'It gets to a point where you're too old to take your shirt off anymore,' Hood says. 'Grunge was bound to have a limited shelf life because once the flannel shirt came off... There's a real short shelf life with men without shirts on. About 22 or 23. It's like, 'Dude, put a shirt on, and for God's sake wear some shoes.'"

This is awesome.

hbo true blood musician casting:

"The second season of HBO’s acclaimed vampire series True Blood is fast approaching (June 14th) and, honestly, we’re pretty damn excited. While the show is already jam packed with memorable characters, being a music site and all, we can’t help but wish that some of our favorite (or not) musicians could make a cameo appearance or two. Why? For starters, because some of them just look like they would fit the part. Others would maybe fit the part, but we mostly just want to see them die a violent on-screen death.

Here is who we have in mind…

MPAA Admits to Losing PR War to the ‘Enemies of Copyright’

So, where do these misunderstandings possibly come from anyway? We figured a short list might be in order: destroying Napster and Audio Galaxy and not creating an alternative for the get-go, raiding people’s homes because they uploaded Star Wars (not necessarily leaking it in the first place), hacking the URN hash and polluting FastTrack, hacking The Pirate Bay, having Viacom serve DMCA notices to people posting video’s of people eating in a restaurant on YouTube, suing tens of thousands of average American’s including fining one individual $222,000 for sharing a couple songs, saying that files in a shared directory is copyright infringement in court, saying that evidence is too hard to get and that the industry shouldn’t be burdened to prove their cases in court, suggesting that iPods are little more than little pirate ships, saying in court that even making one back-up copy of a DVD is illegal, lobbying to put in the DMCA, demanding that laws should be in place to prevent any tinkering with DRM including for research purposes, installing rootkits on people’s computers, installing spyware on people’s computers via the MediaMax technology, being outed for being hypocrites for pirating a documentary movie and claiming that it’ll only be in a safe place, tried to bring people a broadcast flag and telling people you can’t record TV shows if the broadcaster doesn’t like it, trying to bi-pass the backfiring of WIPO and the FCC to bring in the broadcast flag anyway, tried to get ISPs to do all the copyright industry’s dirty work,

DBT Week in Review - 5/29/09

DBT!

Big blog post from Patterson this week with all kinds of goodies:

Drive-By Truckers:

"DBT has a couple of new releases in the immediate pipeline:

First off, our Austin City Limits show from last fall will be released on July 7 on DVD. The DVD will include the entire performance (only about a third of it was aired when it came on TV).
This is by far the best live performance of ours ever caught on film.
We were on, the sound was excellent, and the production value top-notch. We loved playing on that stage and the crowd was fantastic.
It also features one of the last ever performances of '18 Wheels Of Love', featuring the full monologue and the sequel monologue.

Second in upcoming DBT News, on September 1st, New West will be releasing THE FINE PRINT (A Collection of Oddities and Rarities 2003-2008). We finished mixing it yesterday and are mastering it Thursday. It features 12 songs and maybe the most fun album we've ever made. Songs include 'George Jones Talkin' Cell Phone Blues', 'Rebels', 'Play It All Night Long', 'TVA' and the original never released version of 'Goode's Field Road'."

Dexateens

Dexateen’s Chicago Premiere - Come Back Real Soon, Ya Hear? : Sound Citizen:

"Anyway - this is not your standard southern rock. And that was apparent from the moment the first chord rang out. Perhaps guitarist Lee Bains III’s AC/DC shirt and Gibson SG should have tipped me off. There are times when the Dexateens jam a hard rock sound, you can even hear some metal in there, but with a decidedly hillbilly heart - and I mean that in a great way. You can hear bluegrass in both the vocals and rhythms of every song and you get the feeling that it just comes out that way. It feels so deep-rooted in their sound that I don’t imagine they could play any other way even if they tried. At times I heard just hints of Neil Young, The Black Crowes and even some Kid Rock, believe it or not, but those are just my own music biases creeping in - the Dexateens have a sound all their own. And I dig it. They can slow it down too, like “Grandaddy’s Mouth.” (check out the partial video below.)

The Dexateens may have made their first Chicago stop this week, but it won’t be their last. I feel good about the staying power with this one. And so do the people at Austin City Limits, where they will be making an appearance."

EU pushes music industry to open up online rights - The Globe and Mail:

"EU antitrust regulators told the music industry Tuesday to move quickly and change licenses that currently restrict online music stores such as iTunes from offering the same songs for sale across Europe.

Internet music downloads in Europe lag behind those in the United States, pulling in just a fraction of revenues the record industry is losing from falling CD sales.

Part of the problem in Europe is that music rights are sold separately in each country, which has prevented Apple Inc (AAPL-Q130.097.596.20%) .'s iTunes from setting up a single store to service all of Europe. Instead, it has to seek licenses from each EU member state where it wishes to sell and to set up separate national stores with different music selections."

A Guitar Magazine Tests the Luxury Waters - NYTimes.com:

"One might assume that the new magazine Guitar Aficionado is a spinoff of the 17-year-old Cigar Aficionado. Both have covers with celebrities holding the featured prop (the chef Tom Colicchio with a 1963 guitar, Jay-Z with a stogie of a presumably more recent vintage). They both carry stories about alcohol, watches and men’s fashion, and ads for cigars and speakers. Also, both titles include the word “aficionado.”"

NPR: R.I.P. Jay Bennett:

"Today we say goodbye to the talented Jay Bennett, who brought a wonderful depth of sound to some of Wilco's best-loved records -- particularly my favorites, Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Bennett left the band in 2001, but his influence remains stamped on its sound"
_______

Daily Kos: R.I.P. Jay Bennett:

"However, with this morning's news, we now know what drove Bennett to sue a former friend and bandmate: the threat of overwhelming medical bills. Like many artists and countless others who do not pursue traditional forms of employment, Bennett lacked health insurance. At the time of his death, Bennett was suffering from severe pain, and though he desperately needed hip replacement surgery, he was concerned that seeking help would send him spiraling into crippling debt. Despite the claims of health care industry apologists, many people like Bennett are beyond assistance. Struggling to secure a steady source of income early on, musicians are often forced to choose between their vocation and health insurance when they're young, and by the time they get old, they typically find themselves ineligible to receive coverage under any plan whatsoever.

Stories like this underline the desperate need for health reform that, at the very least, includes a public option. The United States needs artists and innovators who work outside the confines of the corporate safety net, and we should not be forcing them to choose between their health and the art that enriches all of our lives."

"Having conquered the ghosts of a hard-luck past on her GRAMMY-nominated CD The Scene of the Crime, BETTYE LAVETTE shines a new light on that past with her latest, A CHANGE IS GONNA COME SESSIONS. The digital-only EP for Anti- Records, available exclusively through iTunes starting June 16, revisits BETTYE’s forgotten post-Atlantic Records years as a nightclub singer, Broadway performer, and touring cast member opposite Cab Calloway in “Bubbling Brown Sugar.”

The EP opens with a stirring solo version of Sam Cooke’s posthumous Civil Rights anthem “A Change Is Gonna Come,” a song which BETTYE sang with Jon Bon Jovi in January as part of the “We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial” concert. Joining BETTYE for these Sessions are pianist and musical director Al Hill, veteran bassist John Heard – who has accompanied such luminaries as Count Basie, Cole Porter, Ella Fitzgerald, and Art Pepper – drummer Danny Frankel (k.d. lang, Lou Reed), and Tom Hagerman from DeVotchKa on strings."

Sheryl is a bud of mine from SF. She does some great Rock jewelry.

Rebel Chic: Rock Candy Design Jewelry | sfindiefashion.com:

"Candy isn’t always best when it’s sweet. Case in point: accessories from Rock Candy Design, a San Francisco jewelry line with a rebellious streak we wholeheartedly approve of.

Pieces like the Brothel Token pendant draw on the shady ladies of the Barbary Coast for inspiration, while the Cocksucker charm necklace caught our eye for its literal sensibilities and obvious conversation starting-appeal. You’ll fare far better than Bret or Daisy with a silver “diamond” as your new Rock of Luv, while metal multi-chain necklaces and bracelets deliver the kind of stage-worthy wow factor we’d use to amp up a simple black top and jeans.

Made by Sheryl Gould, who started out creating jewelry at a young age using wire and materials from her dad’s hardware store, each piece is designed to worn by men or women – a quality she dubs “unisexy.” Gould tells us, “I appreciate seeing men wear jewelry, when they wear it well.”"

"Citing his ongoing feud with EMI over the prior album, Danger Mouse's new Dark Night of the Soul will be released and sold exclusively as -- get this -- a blank CD-R. It will be up to the buyer to find the music through other means and burn it onto the CD.

Per a statement from the Mouse:

Danger Mouse's new project Dark Night Of The Soul consists of an album length piece of music by Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and a host of guest vocalists, along with a collection of original David Lynch photography inspired by and based on the music. The photographs, which provide a visual narrative for the music, are compiled in a limited edition, hand numbered 100 page book which will now come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: 'For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.'"

Bailing Out The RIAA? | Techdirt

At the Tech Policy Summit yesterday, David Carson, the General Counsel of the US Copyright Office spent a bit of time at the beginning of his talk explaining why the Performance Rights Act made sense. This is the bill that would make radio stations pay musicians (rather than just songwriters as it is now) for every song they play on the radio. The recording industry insists that it's somehow unfair that radio stations have been promoting their music for free, and Carson seems to believe their explanation 100% (which is, unfortunately, quite typical of the Copyright Office). He argued, unconvincingly, that while radio used to promote artists (the reason that stations don't need to pay musicians), it no longer does so. That makes no sense. While there are alternatives out there for promoting artists, and radio may not have the impact it once had, that hardly means that the stations aren't promoting the music.

And, of course, the most damning argument against the recording industry's demand for money here is the fact that, for decades, the industry has (illegally) had the money go in the other direction. The system of payola has shown, quite clearly, how much the recording industry values airtime, in that it's willing to pay radio stations to play its music.

Jazz News: Booker T. Jones Tours with a New Album That Breaks the Mold:

"“Pound It Out,' the opening track, begins with the unaccompanied notes of a Hammond organ, an instrument whose quavering sound was integral to the records Jones made in the 1960s, both as part of Booker T & the MGs and as part of the Stax Records house band that backed Otis Redding and Sam & Dave, among many others.

Recorded in a converted movie theater in Memphis, Tenn., the hundreds of songs Jones cut for Stax were saturated in Southern grit and sweat, a sound that came to define and occasionally constrain his career. But Potato Hole, his first solo album in almost two decades, due out April 21, announces its intention to depart from that template right off the bat. Jones' opening riff is met with a thundering triple-guitar blast, courtesy of Southern rockers the Drive-By Truckers, who back Jones on all of the album's 10 tracks.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

There's some really good stuff in this one:

Aquarium Drunkard: MP3 Blog, Music Blog Long Shots :: Justin Townes Earle & Jason Isbell

JTE: I think they cross in the simplest fashion just because musicians have always been looked at as outlaws, and somehow through history, I don’t exactly know how it happened, I don’t know how people ended up translating Johnny cash into punk rock. But it ended up happening and it was just this attitude thing when these guys were coming up back in the day you had a bunch of rough and tumble folks like Charlie Pool and Dock Boggs. The kind of characters that may have been from the hills, but they’d shoot your ass in a second. They were rough, they drank, they didn’t give a shit what they said to anybody or what anybody said to them, they were gonna do what they wanted to do. And I think you know even though Dock Boggs did use his wife as a shield in a gunfight in Bristol Tennessee, I think he pulled off punk rock a little classier than Sid Vicious did.

JI: Right. Yeah I guess you’re right, the classiness of it is a little bit different, because I know a lot of those old guys and they’re just as grizzled and just as hard as my opinion of Johnny Rotten would be, but they still seem to be kinda gentlemen about it you know.

JTE: Yeah. Yeah I think that there’s an old time feel about ‘em that still says like, when the suns out you say yes ma’am and yes sir, and when the sun goes down it’s fuck ‘em. Where in punk rock its fuck ‘em all the time.

JI: All day long, yup.

DBT Week in Review - 4/10/09

I usually begin the Friday post with DBT news, but today I want to put the Dexateens front and center.

Very cool. Get yer pics in!

Dear Celebrities of Tomorrow,

It's the Dexateens again, needing something.

We're doing a video for a song called "Caption," which asks the musical question

"If there was a caption on the picture of your life
would it tell the story that you tell yourself inside?"

That's the gist of it right there, with some elaboration about hopes, fears, present, past. Deep songwriterly things, understand?

So the video idea is to feature pictures of people with--wait for it--CAPTIONS. This is where you come in.

We'd like to feature our friends' pictures along with whatever text you'd choose as the caption (On the picture. Of your life.).

*****BEFORE THIS GOES ANY FARTHER: IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, PLEASE DON'T SEND PICTURES BACK TO THIS ADDRESS. IT WILL KILL OUR EMAIL. READ ON FOR DETAILS. THANKS!**********

It can be serious, zany, sad, a caption for today, or a summary of your life to this point--whatever you want barring a few exceptions outlined below in 4.

If you're interested here's what to do:

1. Send a picture of yourself to

mycaption@gmail.com

Preliminary questions and tech support requests can be sent to that address as well.

The picture will need to be between 72 and 120 dpi and at least 720 x 480. For the layman: high enough resolution for the web and not tiny.

2. Include your caption text in the body of the email. Keep em under 150 characters. It's like haiku or twitter!

3. If we want to use your picture (which we probably will) we'll need to get Official Permission from you to do so. We can send a separate email covering that once we've picked the photos, or you can paste the following into the body of the email:

"I certify that you have the right to use and distribute this photo in the Dexateens' 'Caption' video."

4. So we can use the picture, keep it clean: no logos; no dodgy behavior; no nakedness. For example, a picture of you doing bong rips while having Mickey Mouse and the Nike logo tattooed on your butt cheeks will be summarily dismissed.

All right. Awesome. Let's make a Rock Video!

Inductee Oldham ready to make more music | TimesDaily.com | Florence, AL:

"At Saturday's induction banquet, Oldham and his wife shared a table with his friend, singer/songwriter Bobby Womack, Rolling Stone's rhythm guitarist Ron Wood, and record mogul Russell Simmons, founder of the pioneering hip-hop label Def Jam.

'I'd never met any of The Rolling Stones before except Chuck Levell, the keyboard player from Alabama,' Oldham said. 'I got to chat with Bobby Womack in the green room and with Little Anthony and the Imperials.'

Oldham was introduced by Paul Shaffer, keyboard player and band leader for the CBS Orchestra on 'The Late Show with David Letterman.' Shaffer talked about Oldham while an audio and video montage of the artist's achievements played in the background."

Kanye says 'South Park' put him in check:

"NEW YORK – 'South Park' may have accomplished the impossible — getting Kanye West to check his ego. And perhaps to show that he's really serious about making that change, he provided a link to one of the most biting moments from the "South Park" show, and thanked the writers as well.
