Turley: The demon is dead; so are many of our rights - USATODAY.com:
"What has been most chilling is that the elimination of Saddam and now bin Laden has little impact on this system, which seems to continue like a perpetual motion machine of surveillance and searches. While President Dwight D. Eisenhower once warned Americans of the power of the military-industrial complex, we now have a counterterrorism system that employs tens of thousands, spends tens of billions of dollars each year and is increasingly unchecked in its operations."

Climate Leadership FAIL

Stick-to-yer-guns Obama is gonna drive off the same cliff as GW.

Putting A Face To The Cost Of Dem Cowering - TalkLeft: The Politics Of Crime:
"From the inadequate stimulus of 2009, to the deficit 'concerns' (see the catfood commission) of today (among many other issues), the flinching and cowering of the Obama Administration and the Dems has damaged the country and, ironically, the political fortunes of the Dems. The reflexive hippie punching, the constant refrain of not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, the ever present concern of being labeled a gasp, liberal, has led to great suffering in the nation. Simply put, the Dems have not been up to the job. L'Affaire Sherrod has put a face to the cost of this attitude. I hope that the transcendence of this problem is recognized and addressed."
_______

Howard Dean in 2012... or 2016.

Howard Dean: No More Apologies -- It's Time to Stand Up for Our Convictions

Obama should be saying this. Obama should also get on his knees and beg Dean's forgiveness and ask him to be Chief of Staff.

Howard Dean tells Fox: Your coverage of Sherrod was racist:
"Appearing alongside Newt Gingrich, Dean was blunt with his accusation. 'I don't think Newt Gingrich is a racist and you're certainly not a racist but Fox News did something that was absolutely racist,' said Dean.

'They had an obligation to find out what was really in the clip. They have been pushing a theme of black racism, phony Black Panther crap and this business and Sotomayor and all this other stuff. The Tea Party called out their racist fringe and I think the Republican Party has got to stop appealing to its racist fringe,' Dean continued."

Sen. Cardin: Dems, Obama Never Connected BP Spill To The Need For Climate Change Legislation

_______

Where Was Obama When Reid Killed the Climate Bill? | Mother Jones:
"Handled correctly, the BP spill should have been to climate legislation what September 11th was to the Patriot Act, or the financial collapse was to the bank bailout. Disasters drive sweeping legislation, and precedent was on the side of a great leap forward in environmental progress. In 1969, an oil spill in Santa Barbara, California – of only 100,000 barrels, less than the two-day output of the BP gusher – prompted Richard Nixon to create the EPA and sign the Clean Air Act. But the Obama administration let the opportunity slip away.

Early on, Obama failed to challenge blowhards such as Senator Jim Inhofe who distorted the science of global warming. Revkin points out that the president has not invited researchers and climate analysts to the White House (as even Bush did). And after BP's well blew out, Obama's infamously milquetoast address from the Oval Office never connected the disaster with the need for a cap on carbon. All of this wasn't for a lack of pressure from his allies. Nine high-profile environmental groups wrote a letter to the president pleading that 'nothing less than your direct personal involvement' will break the logjam in the Senate. Al Gore ultimately said what Obama wouldn't:"
_______

Op-Ed Columnist - Who Cooked the Planet? - NYTimes.com:
"So it wasn’t the science, the scientists, or the economics that killed action on climate change. What was it?

The answer is, the usual suspects: greed and cowardice.

If you want to understand opposition to climate action, follow the money. The economy as a whole wouldn’t be significantly hurt if we put a price on carbon, but certain industries — above all, the coal and oil industries — would. And those industries have mounted a huge disinformation campaign to protect their bottom lines."

Where the Young Guns Live.

This post is a couple of months old, but I just stumbled upon Sex Red-Headed Nuns blog. He nails this one.

Bunch of damn pussies running around this country.

Very much agree with: If you are too out of shape to chase down and catch a harmless suspect, then you are not allowed to use a taser to compensate your fat ass.

Sexy Red-Headed Nuns:
"And, as a result, today everyone freaks out too damn easily. 'Oh noes! We don't know what he was going to do!'

Well, yes, we do know. In all likelihood, he was going to run around like a loon. Stupid, yes. Harmless, nearly certainly so.

But we can't leave it at that. Oh no, not in today's America. Today, we all piss our pants in terror and cheer when security uses a taser.

Stupid fucking ESPN jocks and stupid fucking cowardly over-reacting America."

19th Worst. That's pretty damn sporty, Carly. Hack.

Carly Fiorina: Don’t Believe the Hype | The Nation:
"Here’s a fact for you, Portfolio magazine named Fiorina the “19th Worst CEO of All-Time”—placing her in the top 20 along with the likes of Dick Fuld, Ken Lay, Roger Smith and Bernie Ebbers. Why? Because her tenure as CEO of Hewlett Packard was a disaster.

The magazine described Fiorina as “a consummate self-promoter” who “paid herself handsome bonuses and perks while laying off thousands of employees to cut costs. The merger Fiorina orchestrated with Compaq in 2002 was widely seen as a failure. She was ousted in 2005.”"

"Primaries.... lots of them"

AMERICAblog News: My musings on Lincoln beating Halter in Arkansas:
"I'll give it to you straight, right from my inner Trotsky:

You don't replace the party in power; you take over the party in power.

Tape it to your wall.

It wasn't Lenin who toppled the Czar, it was the Mensheviks. Once Kerenski and his group had set up the revolutionary government, Lenin grabbed control. The Texas Chainsaw Conservatives didn't topple the Republican Party, they took it over, one county office at a time. The Baptist Church fell to the pseudo-godly in the same godless way. (I hear other churches are fending off similar assaults from the cadres; God help them.)

Primaries, lots of them, until the Democratic party is ours. We'll need an entire party if we expect to go toe-to-toe ourselves. Yes, Obi-wan, it really is our only hope."

Terror Mimes

Oh, that simpler, more bipartisan time of early Aught-8. Such a cooperative period of peace and prosperity....

Somebody Needs To Take A Trip In Mr. Peabody's Wayback Machine | Talking Points Memo:
"Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), lamenting the passage of health care reform: 'I wish that we had continued that bipartisan effort that took place prior to the President coming into office.' Watch."
Why, look at how the Republicans tried and tried and tried with all of their squinted eye might to be bipartisan.

Mean ol' Democrats.

Flashback: Conservatives Guaranteed ‘ObamaCare Is Dead,’ ‘Pelosi Doesn’t Have The Votes’

– Dick Morris, Fox News commentator, November 4: “A deathblow to ObamaCare.”

– Fred Barnes, Fox News commentator, January 20: “The health care bill, ObamaCare, is dead with not the slightest prospect of resurrection.”

– Robert A. Levy, chairman of the Cato Institute, January 26: “That’s why Obamacare is dead.”

– Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), Minority Whip, February 24: “Speaker Pelosi doesn’t have the votes in the House. . . . It is futile for for them to continue to try and push something on the American people that frankly won’t result in better health care.”

– Rep. Dan Boren (D-OK), March 3: “I think the votes are not there and I don’t see where we get them.”

– Cantor, March 5: “Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi doesn’t have the votes needed to pass a health-care bill in the House of Representatives.”

– Rep. John Boehner (R-OH), Minority Leader, March 14: “If she had 216 votes, this bill would be long gone. They tried to pass it in September, October, November, December, January, February. Guess what? They don’t have the votes.”

– Boehner, March 17: Health care reform will pass “over my dead body.”

– Cantor, March 19: “[T]here’s no way they can pass this bill.”

Health Reform Bill Summary: The Top 18 Immediate Effects

_______

Funny how the tone changed Just. Like. That.

Daily Kos: The Narrative Changes:
"So now all of a sudden, he's an effective and able President that fights for his convictions? Who knew? Not from reading the papers prior to today.

LA Times:

What's clear now, however, is that Obama is a president with a combative stubbornness that's not often visible in his cool, above-the-fray public style. And he has demonstrated that a president who picks a goal, adopts a battle plan, and sticks with it is not easy to knock out."
_______

I wouldn't say it has 'struck out' yet. It is still fouling off balls with a 2-2 count.

Op-Ed Columnist - Fear Strikes Out - NYTimes.com:
"Instead, I want you to consider the contrast: on one side, the closing argument was an appeal to our better angels, urging politicians to do what is right, even if it hurts their careers; on the other side, callous cynicism. Think about what it means to condemn health reform by comparing it to the Civil Rights Act. Who in modern America would say that L.B.J. did the wrong thing by pushing for racial equality? (Actually, we know who: the people at the Tea Party protest who hurled racial epithets at Democratic members of Congress on the eve of the vote.)

And that cynicism has been the hallmark of the whole campaign against reform."
_______

She did OK. We still have this little matter of the Public Option to deal with. Her tale will be written latter. Now, the Senate.... those fuckers are in for a world of hurt.

On health care, Pelosi kept Democrats thinking big:
"'It's safe to say that she's going to change some of the ways that we look at effective speakers, and maybe create a new definition of how to get things done under incredibly difficult circumstances,' said Ray Smock, who was House historian for a dozen years under former speakers Tip O'Neill, Jim Wright and Tom Foley."
_______

God, I hope Democratic balls grew and vaginas puffed up. We'll see moving forward.

Arianna Huffington: Health Care Post-Mortem: Dems Feel the Wind at Their Back, GOP Hoisted With Its Own Cynical Petard:
"On the other side of the aisle, Democrats are empowered and energized. In the best tradition of great presidents who have learned on the job, President Obama has shown a willingness to course correct and an ability to do so. In the wake of Scott Brown's victory in Massachusetts (a victory that led Fred Barnes to declare health care reform 'dead with not the slightest prospect of resurrection'), Obama finally moved off the sidelines and took charge of moving health care forward. He finally gave up his obsession with bipartisanship, finally took on the health insurance industry, and finally adopted the populist rhetoric the times call for.

As a result, he created the kind of momentum that builds upon itself -- the kind that delivers the votes you never have until, well, you have them. The kind of momentum that says, this train is leaving the station, you better get on board or get left behind. The kind of momentum he and his fellow Democrats can use as they tackle the huge problems ahead."
_______

All of this HAS to be good for John McCain, though, right?

If you played a drinking game where you had to drink every time McSame lied, you'd be drunk in 5 minutes flat.

"No cooperation for the rest of the year". Well, then, mister, you just take your ball home and shove it up your ass as far as I'm concerned.

Axelrod Says McCain’s “Disappointing Attitude” Belongs “On the Sandlot” - Political Punch:
"'There will be no cooperation for the rest of the year,' McCain said. 'They have poisoned the well in what they've done and how they've done it.'"
_______

Reid kinda remembers that he was a boxer back in the day. I'd rather have an MMA fighter, though.

Democrats.senate.gov - Senator Harry Reid, Majority Leader:
"“For someone who campaigned on ‘Country First’ and claims to take great pride in bipartisanship, it’s absolutely bizarre for Senator McCain to tell the American people he is going to take his ball and go home until the next election. He must be living in some parallel universe because the fact is, with very few exceptions, we’ve gotten very little cooperation from Senate Republicans in recent years.

“At a time when our economy is suffering and we’re fighting two wars, the American people need Senator McCain and his fellow Republicans to start working with us to confront the challenges facing our country—not reiterating their constant opposition to helping working families when they need it most.”"

Legal Schnauzer: Republicans Try to Shoot the Messenger on Corruption in Alabama:

"Alabama Republicans, predictably, have tried to discredit GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Johnson after his statements late last week that current governor Bob Riley received millions of dollars in campaign funds from Mississippi gambling interests in 2002.

A Riley spokesman said Johnson, a former member of Riley's cabinet, never was involved in campaign fund-raising and therefore could not know about such matters. The chairman of the Alabama Republican Party called Johnson's claims 'a joke.'

But the Riley defenders forget one inconvenient truth: This story hardly originated with Bill Johnson."

"Dear Bill: Thanks for including the Chicago Sun-Times on your exclusive list of newspapers on your 'Hall of Shame.' To be in an O'Reilly Hall of Fame would be a cruel blow to any newspaper. It would place us in the favor of a man who turns red and starts screaming when anyone disagrees with him. My grade-school teacher, wise Sister Nathan, would have called in your parents and recommended counseling with Father Hogben.

Yes, the Sun-Times is liberal, having recently endorsed our first Democrat for President since LBJ. We were founded by Marshall Field one week before Pearl Harbor to provide a liberal voice in Chicago to counter the Tribune, which opposed an American war against Hitler. I'm sure you would have sided with the Trib at the time.

I understand you believe one of the Sun-Times misdemeanors was dropping your syndicated column. My editor informs me that 'very few' readers complained about the disappearance of your column, adding, 'many more complained about Nancy.' I know I did. That was the famous Ernie Bushmiller comic strip in which Sluggo explained that 'wow' was 'mom' spelled upside-down."
