I remember reading in one Studs Terkel book about the Great (What was so great about it? Or about the Great War?) Depression an interview with one man about the soup kitchens and such. He pointed out that for the poor of this country there was no depression. It was life as usual for many people. It became called a depression when other-than-usually-poor people had to live as poor people had already been living.
