Letter to the Editor - Southern Style

Choose reason

To the editor:

In what has become a tirade from Christian conservatives, a letter writer (Marriage vote, May 27) thumps the Bible to support his own intolerance of homosexuals. Then, in a type of Orwellian speak, he proclaims that his intolerance is really compassion.

While Christian conservatives lambaste homosexuals with biblical proclamations, they are silent on the biblical passages that are blatant folly; and they certainly don't let these passages influence their lives.

The Bible is just as clear on "gathering sticks upon the Sabbath day" as it is on homosexuality. In Numbers 13:32-36, God left no doubt concerning how he felt about this practice: "And the Lord said unto Moses, The Man shall be surely put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp."

To be consistent, Christian conservatives condemning homosexuals should campaign with equal vigor against picking up sticks (yard work) on Sunday. Better yet, they should let reason be their ethical guide.

Contradicting the Bible, the First Amendment gives us the right to worship other gods, work on Sunday and say anything we like about the gods.

The document of freedoms conceived by what may be the most brilliant and visionary group of men ever assembled should take precedence over a book compiled by ignorant, superstitious, self-serving peoples of ancient cultures.
