Eddie Hinton was a session guitarist non-pareil. He played lead guitar for Muscle Shoals Sound rhythm section from 1967 to 1971. What most people didn't know at the time was that Hinton was also a talented singer, songwriter, arranger and producer in his own right. In the late '60s, Muscle Shoals was something of a hit factory for Atlantic Records recording artists, under the careful, patient tutelage of legendary producer Jerry Wexler. Hinton was just 22 when he was invited to the Shoals area by fellow songwriter and producer Martin Greene. The Hinton/Greene songwriting and producing team produced several country/soul hits, including "Cover Me," and "It's All Wrong But It's Alright" for Percy Sledge. Eddie also wrote the huge hit “Breakfast In Bed,” performed by Dusty Springfield!

Eddie Hinton's cadre of secret fans know what the world is about to find out; Eddie Hinton may be the greatest unknown musician you've never heard. Hinton, widely regarded in the industry as the finest blue-eyed soul singer-songwriter-guitarist, played on more than 200 albums (Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Boz Scaggs, Staple Singers, Waylon Jennings and many more) and wrote hundreds of songs that were covered by Aretha Franklin, Percy Sledge, Dusty Springfield, The Box Tops, Bobby Womack and countless others.

No. You are allowed to consume as much ass and titties as you can with this diet. But, for me, it's more like the cardio phase of a regular workout. You see, I'm married...with children. I'm constantly chasing the ass and titties. It keeps my heart rate up just like an aerobic workout. But somehow the ass is mysteriously out of reach. I never can seem to catch up to it. Man but when I do, it's like a tornado. 30 seconds of huffing and puffing...and then the house is destroyed. It's high intensity like a sprint. Who ever finishes first is the winner. And I'm really good at that type of race. I always win!!! But, it doesn't sit well with the wifey when I jump up and throw my hand in the air like I just roped a small steer in a rodeo and shout 'YES!'. So, then it's off to the races through the house in an attempt to avoid being stabbed with a shank. It's a shame most folks don't ever know love like this.

Dexateens

The Dexateens must be the punk crossbreeds of the Southern rock pack. These boys out of Tuscaloosa craft their music with the kind of earnestness that marks a singer-songwriter, yet they unleash a guitar fury that smacks of classic "I-know-it-when-I-hear-it" Southern rock mixed with blissful feedback that evokes Crazy Horse's proto-punk Rust Never Sleeps.

Fun With Bracketology

With March approaching, one's thoughts turn toward the madness tocome. While you're pondering where your favorite basketball team will wind up in this year's NCAA tournament bracket, here's a fun little time waster: 'The Enlightened Bracketologist: The Final Four of Everything,' which compiles 101 tournament-style brackets ranking everything from James Bond gadgets to women's magazine sex cliches.

The book's editors also enlisted Grant Alden and former Durham resident Peter Blackstock, co-editors of No Depression magazine, to break down the best Alt-Country Songs. The 32-song field includes tunes by Drive-By Truckers, Alejandro Escovedo and Doug Sahm. But the winner is Raleigh's own Whiskeytown, whose 'Angels Are Messengers From God' edges Lucinda Williams' 'Changed the Locks' in the finals:

In the end, there was no stopping 'Angels' and its alt-country-defining couplet: 'So I started this damn country band/'Cuz punk rock was too hard to sing.' Besides, Ryan Adams comes from Duke country, and they always win.
