Remains the Same

A word on this horrible act of vandalism by an insane person...

Harvey Updyke arrested in Toomer's Corner tree poisoning, say reports | al.com

When things like this happen in Alabama it makes me infinitely happy that I no longer live in the state.

Never underestimate how deep stupid runs in AL.

First, we have the jackass tree-murderer who wiped out over a century of tradition because he prefers one football team over another. Look, I'm a HUGE Alabama Crimson Tide fan, but to 'hate' another team and its supporters is fucking booger-eating dumb. Alabamians clinging to their football, god and guns. Enough already. Evolve you knuckle-draggers.

Next, you'll have some Bama fans that smirk and approve of this asshole's actions. Grow up, already.

Then, you'll have Auburn fans and non-fans paste the blame on all Alabama fans. With this logic, these same people can be held responsible for the racists sins of past and present which infect the state like a cancer.

Speaking of which....

Finally, all of these folks could give a rats ass that big corporations, agri-farms and individual residents have been poisoning Alabama's dirt and water for decades.

Alabama: "Come for the golf, stay for the cancer".

Sheesh. Priorities, people. Priorities.

The New Obama Budget - NYTimes.com:
"There was an old Washingtoon, probably from the mid-1980s, in which Democrats meet to plan their new centrist strategy — which consists of tax cuts for the rich, reduced spending on the needy, and big defense budgets. “But how is this different from the Republicans?” asks one member of the group. “Compassion,” replies the leader. “We care about the victims of our policies.”

That’s pretty much my initial reaction to what we know so far about the Obama budget. It’s much less awful than the Republican proposal, but it moves in the same direction: listening to the administration, you’d think that discretionary spending, not health care, is at the heart of our long-run deficit problems — and you’d also think that the job of rescuing the economy was done, with unemployment still at 9 percent."

CCCCCCHHHHHAAAAAANGE! Shared sacrifice and all.

Why Isn't Wall Street in Jail? | Rolling Stone Politics:
"Over drinks at a bar on a dreary, snowy night in Washington this past month, a former Senate investigator laughed as he polished off his beer.

'Everything's fucked up, and nobody goes to jail,' he said. 'That's your whole story right there. Hell, you don't even have to write the rest of it. Just write that.'

I put down my notebook. 'Just that?'"

I can't tell if you're being facetious or sarcastic or what-have-you concerning the tree vandalism. Your headline is right- a horrible act of vandalism by an insane person.

The same logic applies to the anti-gun, anti-free speech crowed- a la Loughner.

True. There are morons and insane people everywhere. No ideology or nationality is immune.

Next, you'll have some Bama fans that smirk and approve of this asshole's actions. Grow up, already.

Probably true. Although I’m not aware of any such public statements by any official organizations (I think the NRA and related conservative groups and nonpartisan groups alike eventually condemned the actions and wished the Congresswoman a speedy recovery).

Then, you'll have Auburn fans and non-fans paste the blame on all Alabama fans. With this logic, these same people can be held responsible for the racists sins of past and present which infect the state like a cancer.

True. The anti-gun, anti-free speech crowd blamed the insane person’s acts on access to guns and political speech. This too is an incredibly tenuous connection as its clear that the shooter was just insane. There’s been no evidence of anything more. Talk about pasting the blame.

CLA - What is the purpose of a 30 round clip? Should I be free to purchase a tank and drive it on the highway? Where's that line for you, because if there is a line...

Also, please include citations for your 'anti-gun' and 'anti-free speech' people.

I've never argued that you can't 'say' something. But, there are consequences to speech and actions. Nothing really 'free' about it.

And drawing a parallel between a sports rivalry where trees are killed and a Democratic Rep being shot in the head is quite the stretch. If you can't see the differences then your blinders are greater than the ones you rail against above.

Obviously you don't believe that 'incitement' can ever occur.

•On Jan. 10, 2010, Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle spoke of the need for "Second Amendment remedies" to congressional policies, and specifically called for "taking out" Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

•On May 10, 2010, House candidate Brad Goehring from California's 11th District wrote on his Facebook page: "If I could issue hunting permits, I would officially declare today opening day for liberals. The season would extend through November 2 and have no limits on how many taken as we desperately need to 'thin' the herd."

•Jesse Kelly, the Republican who ran against Ms. Giffords last cycle, held an event on June 12, 2010, advertised locally as follows: "Get on Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 With Jesse Kelly."

-- December 2008: In Belfast, Maine, police discover the makings of a nuclear "dirty bomb" in the basement of a white supremacist shot dead by his wife. The man, who was independently wealthy, reportedly was agitated about the election of President Obama and was crafting a plan to set off the bomb.

-- March 2010: Seven militiamen from the Hutaree Militia in Michigan and Ohio are arrested and charged with plotting to assassinate local police officers with the intent of sparking a new civil war.

-- March 2010: An anti-government extremist named John Patrick Bedell walks into the Pentagon and opens fire, wounding two officers before he is himself shot dead.

-- May 2010: A still-unidentified white man walks into a Jacksonville, Fla., mosque and sets it afire, simultaneously setting off a pipe bomb.

-- July 2010: An agitated right-winger and convict named Byron Williams loads up on weapons and drives to the Bay Area intent on attacking the offices of the Tides Foundation and the ACLU, but is intercepted by state patrolmen and engages them in a shootout and armed standoff in which two officers and Williams are wounded.

Incitement probably happens, but on a very limited basis when compared to the totality of the population. This doesn't replace the fact that people should be responsible for their actions and that responsible people should not have their rights infringed because a limited number of people cannot exercise theirs in a lawful manner. This is true whether we are talking about guns or speech.

If 30 round clips were banned, I would have no problem with that. The second amendment, like all constitutional rights, is subject to reasonable restrictions. Sorry, there's no constitutional right to a tank or bazooka.

Violent imagery in our culture is the norm, and has always been the norm. This new call for civility is merely code for "don't speak unless you agree with me." When did liberals stop protecting free speech?

Maybe the problem stems from a lack of psychiatric treatment available to the general public? Most of the examples cited in your post would indicate at least a minimal mental health issue. The problem is not, however, speech or access to guns.

Campaign, the word itself, is a military term. I don't mind phrases like "pot shots" or "targets" because I comprehend there is no violent intent. Much the same, like you, I don't blame the school for the actions of those that killed the tree.

Without a doubt, there is a big difference between killing a tree and shooting someone or committing an act of violence. I was pointing out how similar the rationales are between your post today and your posts from mid January.

I am infinitely happy I NEVER lived in that state, or that state of mind. On the other hand, I will never be able to say I was evolved enough to get out of that state, as you can.

Not all about Alabama is bad. The tree killer is from Texas. Every state has it's crazies and problems. Things shouldn't be blamed on a whole state. It's all about the people, what they believe wherever they live. Like I said there are nuts all over the world. Everyone in a certain state also does not share the same attitudes and beliefs, everyone is different and individual.
