I have seen the signs, and people are pissed. It's interesting to see how this has pushed people over the edge, because Pittsburgh has been all kind of messed up with regard to alcohol for a long time. You can buy beer only from a beer distributor, and only in cases. If you want a six pack, you can get a "to go" order at a local bar, but then you have to pay all the consumption taxes etc. as if you were buying a single. Liquor and wine are only available from the state stores, and the buying is done by the centralized agency, so the selection is constricted even though there are a few "specialty" stores in wealthier areas. SO, no beer in wine/liquor stores, and no wine/liquor in beer stores (which, I might add, are not always the nicest places to shop, and often feature a window counter that you walk up to and name your poison).

I will never forget the day I moved to Pittsburgh to start grad school. It was the middle of August, and I was coming from the South - where I had lived all my life, and where every place had a/c - to a 2nd story city block apartment with no a/c, heat radiating into the windows from the asphalt below, no trees in sight. Where I came from was hot, but shit, at least we used to be able to sit out under the mango trees in the shade! Two of us unloaded the 15 ft U-Haul over the 95+ degree afternoon, and finally at the breaking point I set out on foot to find beer. So I started asking people where the nearest 7-11 was (ha ha, that's not what they are called up there) and finally navigated to one a few blocks from my new home. I walked in, and started looking in the cold cases, pacing back and forth, my mouth must have been open in disbelief. Finally I asked the cashier "where do you keep the beer?" Of course, the cashier laughed at me and said "you're not from around here are you?"

When one moves there's a myriad of things to plan for and research. Access to alcohol is now at the top of my list after than horror story, binky.
