A Little KISS

Snarkless, today. I've got the bird flu.

Report Raises New Questions on Bush, WMDs:
"WASHINGTON - The White House faced new questions Wednesday about President Bush's contention three years ago that weapons of mass destruction had been found in Iraq.

The Washington Post reported that a Pentagon-sponsored team of experts determined in May 2003 that two small trailers were not used to make biological weapons. Yet two days after the team sent its findings to Washington in a classified report, Bush declared just the opposite.

'We have found the weapons of mass destruction,' Bush said in an interview with a Polish TV station. 'We found biological laboratories.'"
Analysts Say a Nuclear Iran Is Years Away:
"Western nuclear analysts said yesterday that Tehran lacked the skills, materials and equipment to make good on its immediate nuclear ambitions, even as a senior Iranian official said Iran would defy international pressure and rapidly expand its ability to enrich uranium for fuel."
Rumsfeld Rebuked By Retired Generals:
"The retired commander of key forces in Iraq called yesterday for Donald H. Rumsfeld to step down, joining several other former top military commanders who have harshly criticized the defense secretary's authoritarian style for making the military's job more difficult.

'I think we need a fresh start' at the top of the Pentagon, retired Army Maj. Gen. John Batiste, who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in Iraq in 2004-2005, said in an interview. 'We need leadership up there that respects the military as they expect the military to respect them. And that leadership needs to understand teamwork.'"
Rolling Stone : Meet Mr. Republican: Jack Abramoff:
"So this is it, finally. By the time this magazine hits the newsstands, Jack Abramoff -- right-wing megalobbyist and great feckless shitwad of our new American century -- will be but a tick of the geological clock away from The End. There will be no rack, no stoning, no scorpion-filled sand pit, no bucket of fire ants. Just a sanitary plea agreement and a single blow of the gavel, and 'Casino Jack' Abramoff will disappear for a few years of weightlifting and Talmudic study."
Rival bands clash over little-person KISS tribute:
"They might be pint-sized performers onstage, but offstage they're in a giant-sized dispute.

Joey Fatale, the 4-foot, 4-inch New Yorker who heads the all-dwarf KISS tribute band MiniKiss, is denying published reports that he tried to sneak past security last month at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas to confront a rival band leader, 4-foot 'Little' Tim Loomis of Tiny Kiss, for allegedly ripping off his idea for such a group."

Nice Ass

First V.P. to shoot someone in the face... First V.P. to be booed throwing out a first pitch. Nice.

Cheney booed loudly, throws out first pitch

Crappy corporate news:

Whiskey Bar: Mutually Assured Dementia:
"Even by the corrupt and debased standards of our times, this is a remarkable thing. The U.S. government is planning aggressive nuclear war (the neocons can give it whatever doublespeak name they like, but it is what it is); those plans have been described in some detail in a major magazine and on the front page of the Washington Post; the most the President of the United States is willing to say about it is that the reports are 'speculative' (which is not a synonym for 'untrue') and yet as I write these words the lead story on the CNN web site is:

ABC pushes online TV envelope

ABC is going to offer online streams of some of its most popular television shows, including 'Desperate Housewives' and 'Lost,' for free the day after they first air on broadcast TV."
Check out the trailer for Al Gore's movie. Scary:

An Inconvenient Truth
Eloquently weaves the science of global warming with Al Gore’s personal history and lifelong commitment to reversing the effects of global climate change. A longtime advocate for the environment, Gore presents a wide array of facts and information in a thoughtful and compelling way. The film is not a story of despair but rather a rallying cry.
Bet you didn't know this. Why isn't this front page news?

Five U.S. soldiers killed in three Iraq attacks this week
"BAGHDAD (AP) — Five American soldiers have been killed in Iraq this week, including three killed Tuesday north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said."
For you immigrant haters out there:

Five AMERICANS who died in Iraq

Finally.... Nice Ass
Have you got the definitive derriere?
"FEW women would claim to have the perfect bottom. But for those in need of reassurance that it is within reach, a scientist has come to the rescue by working out a mathematical formula they believe adds up to the perfect posterior.

The magical figures are (S C) x (B F)/T = V. Though the equation looks rather complicated, it is, according to the scientist, simple.

It assesses shape, bounce, firmness and symmetry – all factors that add up to the bottom line.

S is the overall shape or droopiness of the bottom, C represents how spherical the buttocks are, B measures muscular wobble or bounce, while F records the firmness.

V is the hip to waist ratio, or symmetry of the bottom, and T measures the skin texture and presence of cellulite."

Straight to Hell

Poll Finds Bush Job Rating at New Low:

"The survey found that 38 percent of the public approve of the job Bush is doing, down three percentage points in the past month and his worst showing in Post-ABC polling since he became president. Sixty percent disapprove of his performance."
Accept it: He's an amazingly unpopular president

Leaker in Chief? Scooter Libby and George Bush:

"Republicans on Capitol Hill worried that the attacks on Bush's integrity would further sink his poll ratings and hurt the GOP in November. 'Leaker in chief is something that could stick,' said a senior GOP aide, who declined to be named for fear of angering the president."

Phone-Jamming Records Point to White House:
"Key figures in a phone-jamming scheme designed to keep New Hampshire Democrats from voting in 2002 had regular contact with the White House and Republican Party as the plan was unfolding, phone records introduced in criminal court show.

The records show that Bush campaign operative James Tobin, who recently was convicted in the case, made two dozen calls to the White House within a three-day period around Election Day 2002 — as the phone jamming operation was finalized, carried out and then abruptly shut down."

Rep. John Murtha: Time to Change Direction:
"The President is using fear to keep our troops in Iraq. Fear of what might happen if we leave Iraq. He is saying we should have an open-ended commitment to stay in Iraq, yet he has NO plan. His plan is to cross his fingers and hope that the Iraqis will form a unity government. But hope is not a plan. And for as long as he continues down this vague, open-ended path, more American lives will be lost, and billions of more dollars will be spent. There are only two plans: mine and the President’s. On second thought, there is only one plan: mine. 'Stay the course' is not a plan. It is time to change direction. We should fear only our failure to change."

Two Charged With Filing Fake Obituary:
Two people who police say conspired to get off of work for a few days by filing a fake obituary with a newspaper have been arrested.

James Ralph Snyder, 36, and Mary Jo Elizabeth Jensen, 33, both of Waterloo, participated in the scam by filing an obituary saying Jensen's 17-year-old son had died, police said."

London Calling

Not much commenting today. Still trying to mend a hangover from Friday night... Yes, I said Friday night. I know it's Monday, fool! This is what happens when you get older. I'm trying to get into fighting shape for the DBT concert May 5th and 6th.

First, here are a couple of protest songs worthy of a listen.

Pink and the Indigo girls pull no punches with this one. A great, great song.

I've posted previously about the Dixie Chicks new one. They've added a video you can watch.

Now onto the insanity:

Washington's First and Last Lesson: Power Is Fleeting
"'A staggering collection of misfortunes and failures,' declared Harry C. McPherson of the week. Mr. McPherson should know; he has watched power ebb and flow in town since he came to Washington half a century ago as a Senate aide to Lyndon B. Johnson.

After years of remarkably efficient Republican rule, Congress felt last week like a free-for-all, as conservatives and moderates seemed liberated to pursue their own agendas, something they could never have done when Mr. Delay was their leader."
A 'Concerted Effort' to Discredit Bush Critic:
"As he drew back the curtain this week on the evidence against Vice President Cheney's former top aide, Special Counsel Patrick J. Fitzgerald for the first time described a 'concerted action' by 'multiple people in the White House' -- using classified information -- to 'discredit, punish or seek revenge against' a critic of President Bush's war in Iraq.

Bluntly and repeatedly, Fitzgerald placed Cheney at the center of that campaign. Citing grand jury testimony from the vice president's former chief of staff, I. Lewis 'Scooter' Libby, Fitzgerald fingered Cheney as the first to voice a line of attack that at least three White House officials would soon deploy against former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV."
Welcome to our world, Mr. Pissed-off Republican.
Conniving, greedy, lying and deceitful:
"I have been a registered Republican since the early 1950s, as has my wife, Dot. In fact our dedication to the Grand Old Party was such that we used to ride our horses around our Buckingham Township, Pa., neighborhood with Republican candidates' bumper stickers on their backsides. Now, we never considered the implication, but we found out later that one of those candidates was a real 'horsesass.'

If we had horses today, that's right where we'd stick George Bush's bumper sticker, on our horses' asses."
So scary:
Local Teacher's Run-In With Homeland Security Creates Insecurities:
"A local school employee said a rough run-in with a couple of Homeland Security officers has left him with a strong sense of insecurity.

Leander Pickett, a teacher's assistant at Englewood Elementary, said he was manhandled and handcuffed by two plain clothed Homeland Security officers in front of the school Tuesday for no reason at all."
Even scarier:
Terror and the clash of ideologies:
"British anti-terrorism detectives escorted a man from a plane after a taxi driver had earlier become suspicious when he started singing along to a track by punk band The Clash, police said on Wednesday."

DBT Week in Review - 4/1-7

A veritable crap load of DBT info this week. I'm not even sure where to start.

New West birthed a slide stream of the ENTIRE album. (I'm listening to it all the way through for the first time as a write this. BEST.... ROCK... BAND.... EVER)!

You can check it out the Quicktime stream here and the Windows Media here. Check 'em both cause they may be different. I'm working on the Quicktime stream at the moment.

We welcome a new fan site to the ranks this week with One Of These Days. This is a fantastic site that archives Trucker shows of yore. It is the DB of DBT (found a place to work that in, Alec ;-D). Awesome timeline and discography, too. Alec, the creator of the site even has the rarist of rare... DBT setlist. Check one out below:

Awesome site, Alec!

Hat tip to Ninebullets for alerting us to the Truckers in Harp Magazine:

Drive-By Truckers: Drive They Said:
"The foremost thing you need to know about the Drive-By Truckers’ decade-long career arc and how their new album, A Blessing and a Curse, fits snugly at its apex is this: After years spent debunking Southern stereotypes, the Drive-By Truckers reached a critical decision to not become one"
Harp has also put up an awesome video of DBT in the studio.

Phil, either on the Yahoo Group or Ninebullets, gave us this video of Let There Be Rock from the Pentax show in Europe. Thanks, Phil!

Next up is a child that is so loved and at such an early age has been introduced to The Best Rock that future success is virtually guaranteed and the parents should be given an award. From the Yahoo Group I present to you Meaux Jason and his lovely wife's kick-ass kid!

Check out the picture on Gimp's office wall. A true fan.

Blinded me with Science

Goddamn science with all its stupid facts and benefits. If you approve of science and knowledge then you're helping the terrorists. Now stop using that pretty little head of yours for thinking...

Climate Researchers Feeling Heat From White House:
"Scientists doing climate research for the federal government say the Bush administration has made it hard for them to speak forthrightly to the public about global warming. The result, the researchers say, is a danger that Americans are not getting the full story on how the climate is changing."
.... 'cause we'll tell you what to think:

Fake TV News: Widespread and Undisclosed :
"Over a ten-month period, the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) documented television newsrooms' use of 36 video news releases (VNRs)—a small sample of the thousands produced each year. CMD identified 77 television stations, from those in the largest to the smallest markets, that aired these VNRs or related satellite media tours (SMTs) in 98 separate instances, without disclosure to viewers."
“There’s just too many leaks, and if there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is.” [Bush, 9/30/03]

Bush authorized leak of Iraq intelligence estimate, indicted ex-Cheney aide says:
"A former White House aide under indictment for obstructing a leak probe, I. Lewis Libby, testified to a grand jury that he gave information from a closely-guarded 'National Intelligence Estimate' on Iraq to a New York Times reporter in 2003 with the specific permission of President Bush, according to a new court filing from the special prosecutor in the case, THE NEW YORK SUN reports Thursday."
"Fight, fight! A black and a white...."
Rumsfeld Challenges Rice on 'Tactical Errors' in Iraq

Here is my religious rant from last week. It was good to see an article that addressed part of my rant:

The Religious Left:
"Lo and behold, there is a religious left. The Catholic Church is helping to lead the fight against immigration restrictions. A week doesn't seem to pass without some group convening a conference on religion and liberalism. Last year, Rev. Jim Wallis' progressive manifesto, God's Politics, became a best seller; now Jimmy Carter's book attacking the religious right is on the list."
Honor the soldiers by voting them into office:

Fighting Dems
There are a special group of Democrats who first sign up to serve their country, often in wars half way around the world, and then returned home and continue to fight for the values they hold dear in the Democratic Party. Right now more than fifty veterans are running as Democrats for Congress and dozens more are running up and down the ticket.
Al Fraken recently debated mAnn Coulter. Al absolutely destroys mAnn in his opening statement. Read the whole thing. It's worth it:

An Evening with Ann Coulter: Opening Statement:
"Let me give you another example.

On page 265 of her book Treason, Ann writes of Tom Friedman, the New York Times columnist. “He blamed twenty years of relentless attacks by Muslim extremists on- I quote – ‘religious fundamentalists of any stripe.’”

This didn’t sound like Tom Friedman to me, so I found the one Friedman column that contained that phrase – “religious fundamentalists of any stripe.” It was from a December 26, 2001 column called “Naked Air,” about an airline where everyone would fly naked. “Think about it,” Friedman writes, tongue firmly planted in cheek, “If everybody flew naked, not only would you never have to worry about the passenger next to you carrying box cutters or exploding shoes, but no religious fundamentalists of any stripe would ever be caught dead flying nude.”"
For the geeks. This is really big news:

Apple Unveils Software to Run Windows XP:
"SAN JOSE, Calif. - Shares in Apple Computer Inc. surged Wednesday after the computer maker unveiled software to help owners of its new Intel-based Macs run not only its own operating system but also Microsoft Corp.'s rival Windows XP system."

Too Little Sex, Too Much Jesus

This first article is a bit shocking. You might want to sit down. Someone from the mainstream media actually wrote this:

Turning the Tables
"For once, the Democrats are getting their act together while it's the Republicans who are divided"
Does this administration vet anybody? Can any dumb fuck, child rapist get a high level job in the Bush House? Jon Stewart had a great line the other night on the Daily Show. I'm paraphrasing but it went a little something like this: "A monkey could walk into a Bush staff meeting and start to fling his feces against the wall and probably be promoted to Secretary of State".

Sex sting nets Homeland official
"A deputy press secretary for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was charged with using a computer to seduce a child after authorities said he struck up sexual conversations with an undercover detective posing as a 14-year-old girl.

Brian J. Doyle, 55, the fourth-ranking official in the department’s public affairs office, was expected to be placed on administrative leave Wednesday."
God's Own Party my ass.

Why do these people hate sex so much? "Stacy was a troubled teen ever since she was twelve." Why is sex such an evil thing for them? "He said you better get yourself right in the eyes of God." Is it the pleasure it brings? "Satan's made a slave of you, the Lord will set you free!" All they've got when it comes to sex ed. is to don't do it. Well... Fuck you, I'm doin' it!

Bush Admin. $15B AIDS Plan Questioned:
"The Bush administration's $15 billion global AIDS initiative is emphasizing sexual abstinence and fidelity more than Congress intended, and that focus is undermining prevention efforts in poor countries, congressional investigators said Tuesday.

U.S. teams on the ground in Africa and other poor areas told Congress' Government Accountability Office that the requirement that they spend a specific percentage of their money on abstinence is hurting some efforts to tailor prevention programs to countries' needs.

The directives are creating confusion and forcing reduction in some programs deemed necessary for pregnant women, high-risk groups like truck drivers and sex workers, married couples and sexually active youths, the GAO said."
No comment needed:

Report: Tax cuts on investment income a windfall for rich:
"Report: The wealthiest Americans are reaping huge gains from reduced taxes on investment income."
This is pretty cool:

Stay Up Late and See Something Odd
"WASHINGTON - Call it a coincidental sign of our digital times or a reason to stay up late and stare at the clock. Either way, early Wednesday morning the time and date will be 01-02-03-04-05-06."
See, we've got rednecks in California too! A teacher no less. Stupid is as stupid does:

Paperweight Severs Calif. Teacher's Hand:
"A teacher who kept a 40 mm shell on his desk as a paperweight blew off part of his hand when he apparently used the object to try to squash a bug, authorities say.

The 5-inch-long shell exploded Monday while Robert Colla was teaching 20 to 25 students at an adult education class."

Nobody puts Baby in a corner.

Must see internet TV. This is awesome:
My Pet Scapegoat

See-ya you evil cock.... roach killing POS.

Rep. DeLay won't run again - Politics:
Succumbing to scandal, former Majority Leader Tom Delay said Tuesday he is resigning from Congress, a move that closes out a career that blended unflinching conservatism with a bare-knuckled political style."
...And when you hear the spin on why he quit just remember this:

Federal Probe Has Edged Closer to Texan

It was the liberals who run this country that forced him out... yeah right. Fuck you, Delay.

Republican's don't steal elections. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Ohio Official Invested in Vote Machine Co.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The state's top elections official said Monday he accidentally invested in a company that makes voting machines.
Smoke and mirrors. Your Republican economy blooming:

Some homeowners struggle to keep up with adjustable rates:
"They feel alone, but they're not. America's five-year real estate boom was fueled partly by a tempting array of cut-rate mortgages that helped millions of Americans qualify for home or refinance loans. To afford soaring home prices, many turned to adjustable-rate and other, riskier loans with low initial payments. The homeownership rate hit a record 70%."
Obama bitch slaps Bush in so many ways with this statement:

Remarks of Senator Barack Obama, 4/3/06:
"This is not a serious effort. Saying that America is addicted to oil without following a real plan for energy independence is like admitting alcoholism and then skipping out on the 12-step program. It’s not enough to identify the challenge – we have to meet it."
If prostate cancer is the price I've gotta pay, then bring it on:

Barbecue meats linked with prostate cancer:
A compound formed when meat is charred at high temperatures -- as in barbecue -- encourages the growth of prostate cancer in rats, researchers reported on Sunday."
"If our lord wasn't testing us, how would you account for the proliferation, these days, of this obscene rock and roll music, with its gospel of easy sexuality and relaxed morality"?
.....
Willard: Yes and I'm not the first one that's noticed it. I mean we're not stuck in the goddamn middle ages here. I mean we've got TV. We've got Family Feud. We're not stuck in Leave It To Beaver land here.
Ren: Well I haven't noticed a wet T-shirt contest in town yet.
Willard: Yeah but I'm waiting. Patiently.

I thought Kevin Bacon took care of this shit in '84 as did Patrick Swayze in '87.

No Constitutional Right to Dance:
"NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City may be known as a centre of artistic expression, but a judge on Monday dismissed a lawsuit that argued people have a constitutional right to dance in any bar or restaurant.
And you know what...
We can dance if we want to, we can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine

Every Facet

"If you're not pissed off, you're not paying attention" is a great bumper sticker seen a lot in the Bay Area. If you ARE paying attention then you should know that Bush and the Republican Party are collectively destroying what makes America great and what makes it tick. Below is a collection of articles that demonstrate this destruction.

Facet #1 - Terrorism

We "anti-war" traitors (note: I'm not anti-war. I'm anti this war and I've held this position from the get-go) have been saying all along that the debacle in Iraq would not make us safer and would assuredly create more terrorist. Kicking Iraq around is like beating up on Timmeh. Iran, however, is the real deal. They are a young, coked-up Mike Tyson. But since we've depleted our military in Iraq, spent all of our money, allowed REAL terrorist to train against us in Iraq we don't have the hand to deal with Iran. And if we want to lob a couple of bombs their way, look what's waiting for us:

Attacking Iran May Trigger Terrorism
"As tensions increase between the United States and Iran, U.S. intelligence and terrorism experts say they believe Iran would respond to U.S. military strikes on its nuclear sites by deploying its intelligence operatives and Hezbollah teams to carry out terrorist attacks worldwide.

Iran would mount attacks against U.S. targets inside Iraq, where Iranian intelligence agents are already plentiful, predicted these experts. There is also a growing consensus that Iran's agents would target civilians in the United States, Europe and elsewhere, they said."

Heckuva job, Bushie.

Facet #2 - Money

Middle class cash is being siphoned off by Corporations. Again, I am not one who believes that all corporations are evil. They are very necessary in a free market economy. I do not wish for the Feds to run our businesses and to disperse all the created wealth equally among the members of our society. People should be rewarded with wealth for innovation, for products, for employing people, for creating competitive markets, etc. BUT, what should be regulated is greed. If the titans of industry were benevolent by nature then regulations would not be necessary. But they aren't and they've proved it time and time again. They get greedy and want it all. The feds need to play a role in preventing this greed. The feds need to play a role in protecting the worker from this greed. The feds need to play a role in protecting the middle class because without it our country will collapse. Can't afford to pay for employee health care coverage my ass:

Corporate profits surge to 40-year high:
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- U.S. corporate profits have increased 21.3% in the past year and now account for the largest share of national income in 40 years, the Commerce Department said Thursday.

Strong productivity gains and subdued wage growth boosted before-tax profits to 11.6% of national income in the fourth quarter of 2005, the biggest share since the summer of 1966. See full story.

For all of 2005, before-tax profits totaled $1.35 trillion, up from $1.16 trillion in 2004 and just $767 billion in 2001."
Under Bush we've run out of room on the debt clock. WE'VE FREAKIN' RUN OUT OF ROOM... ON THE DEBT CLOCK. jeez.

US debt clock running out of time, space:
"So rapid is the rise of the US national debt, that the last four digits of a giant digital signboard counting the moving total near New York's Times Square move in seemingly random increments as they struggle to keep pace.

The national debt clock, as it is known, is a big clock. A spot-check last week showed a readout of 8.3 trillion -- or more precisely 8,310,200,545,702 -- dollars ... and counting.

But it's not big enough.

Sometime in the next two years, the total amount of US government borrowing is going to break through the 10-trillion-dollar mark and, lacking space for the extra digit such a figure would require, the clock is in danger of running itself into obsolescence."

Facet #3 - Education

“A country of morons”. Bush is leaving all of the chillens behind. Testing as the sole source of knowledge creates an brain-dead class who are unable to think big ideas. Big ideas are what made America. Big ideas will save America. Bush's education philosophy is to keep 'em dumb, so he can stay in charge.

Oh, and the lie the Right has been pushing about "liberal" professors discriminating against conservative student has been debunked:

Grading Edge for Conservative Students:
In debates over the Academic Bill of Rights, supporters of the controversial legislation have suggested that conservative students are the victims of classroom bias — and receive lower grades or even failing grades because of their political views.

"Much of the debate has involved trading anecdotes — with David Horowitz citing examples of oppressed conservative students and his critics debunking those examples or providing counter-examples of classrooms where political bias is nowhere to be found in grading or student interactions.

It turns out that there is actual research that has been done on the subject. And the research suggests that there is no widespread relationship between students’ political views and their grades. But there is one exception: In some disciplines favored by conservative students, liberal students seem to receive lower grades."
And the religious right's abstinence only programs are insipid and counterproductive. I don't care what you try to do you cannot stop teenagers from having sex. You better supply them with birth control. Propaganda will not stop teenage hormones.

Sex-Ed Class Becomes Latest School Battleground
The expansion of abstinence programs has been propelled by a steady increase in government funding. The funding started ramping up under the Clinton administration. Since 1998, the federal government has spent about $890 million on abstinence programs, including sex-ed courses taught in schools (as well as pregnancy crisis centers and government agencies). But the bulk of it -- $779 million -- has been spent since President George W. Bush took office in 2001. The government is slated to spend $176 million on abstinence programs this year -- up from nearly $167 million last year and $82 million in 2001.
Facet #4 - Religion

I'll choose science over religious quakery any day of the week.

Study: Prayer doesn't affect heart patients
"NEW YORK (AP) -- In the largest study of its kind, researchers found that having people pray for heart bypass surgery patients had no effect on their recovery. In fact, patients who knew they were being prayed for had a slightly higher rate of complications.

Researchers emphasized their work does not address whether God exists or answers prayers made on another's behalf. The study can only look for an effect from prayers offered as part of the research, they said.

They also said they had no explanation for the higher complication rate in patients who knew they were being prayed for, in comparison to patients who only knew it was possible prayers were being said for them."
And stop villifying those of us who do not believe in your mythology. Bigots.

Who's Counting: Distrusting Atheists
"Given the increasing religiosity of American culture, it's perhaps not too surprising that a new study out this month finds that Americans are not fond of atheists and trust them less than they do other groups. The depth of this distrust is a bit astonishing nonetheless.
...
Asked whether they would disapprove of a child's wish to marry an atheist, 47.6 percent of those interviewed said yes. Asked the same question about Muslims and African-Americans, the yes responses fell to 33.5 percent and 27.2 percent, respectively. The yes responses for Asian-Americans, Hispanics, Jews and conservative Christians were 18.5 percent, 18.5 percent, 11.8 percent and 6.9 percent, respectively.

When asked which groups did not share their vision of American society, 39.5 percent of those interviewed mentioned atheists. Asked the same question about Muslims and homosexuals, the figures dropped to a slightly less depressing 26.3 percent and 22.6 percent, respectively. For Hispanics, Jews, Asian-Americans and African-Americans, they fell further to 7.6 percent, 7.4 percent, 7.0 percent and 4.6 percent, respectively.

The study contains other results, but these are sufficient to underline its gist: Atheists are seen by many Americans (especially conservative Christians) as alien and are, in the words of sociologist Penny Edgell, the study's lead researcher, 'a glaring exception to the rule of increasing tolerance over the last 30 years.'

Of course, it should go without saying, but won't, that belief in God isn't at all necessary to have a keen ethical concern for others.

Facet #5 - Unquestioned loyalty and not allowing dissent.

For 5 years, this administration, and Rethugs in general, have squashed all dissent and have called those of us you have questioned this administration, traitors, terrorist, etc. Well the hypocrites are coming out in full force now. Once they realize that their political futures are in jeopardy, they are becoming the traitors, terrorist, etc:

Bloomberg.com: U.S.:
"March 31 (Bloomberg) -- William F. Buckley Jr., the longtime conservative writer and leader, said George W. Bush's presidency will be judged entirely by the outcome of a war in Iraq that is now a failure.

``Mr. Bush is in the hands of a fortune that will be unremitting on the point of Iraq,'' Buckley said in an interview that will air on Bloomberg Television this weekend. ``If he'd invented the Bill of Rights it wouldn't get him out of his jam.''"
They created this Frankenstein that they are now running from:

Insulating Bush:
"Karl Rove, President Bush's chief political adviser, cautioned other White House aides in the summer of 2003 that Bush's 2004 re-election prospects would be severely damaged if it was publicly disclosed that he had been personally warned that a key rationale for going to war had been challenged within the administration. Rove expressed his concerns shortly after an informal review of classified government records by then-Deputy National Security Adviser Stephen J. Hadley determined that Bush had been specifically advised that claims he later made in his 2003 State of the Union address -- that Iraq was procuring high-strength aluminum tubes to build a nuclear weapon -- might not be true, according to government records and interviews."
All of this creates a bizarro world. Can we reclaim America? Yes. Yes we can:

Daily Kos: A Tiny Revolution:
"We are in an era, currently, where control of the truth is the battle. We are indeed in an era in which ideas -- little or big 'i', makes no difference -- are politically irrelevant, and the direction of democracy is being steered by fouler winds. Story after story reminds us that reporting the truth is considered a central act of unpatriotic sabotage, these days. In the government, scientists operate under governmentally censored conclusions. In the war, we are told that the news is much, much better than is being reported -- while the reporters are telling us they would report the good news, if it was only safe enough to leave their hotels. In the Congress, we are told what criticisms we may level, and which ones we may not."

Letter to the Editor - Southern Style

TimesDaily.com:

Dangerous liberals?
To the editor:

Mr. Shiflett's letter to the editor (March 27) thoroughly castigated those who happen to disagree with his own political views on issues such as wire tapping, the war in Iraq, gun control, etc.

He puts all such persons in the category of liberalism, calling it a threat to freedom. It is unfortunate he feels his freedom threatened by those who want to have the president obey the law, get our troops out of the mess they are in and remove some of the weapons from the hands of the public.

Evidently (by his definition), I am a liberal, but I don't consider my views dangerous to anyone's freedom. True, I don't want my phone tapped at the whim of the president. True, when I see one of those stickers that says 'Support our troops,' I want to respond with 'Yes, support them -- bring them home!' True, I am perfectly willing to give up my 'right' to have a gun in return for saving some lives. And yes, I even object to the inhumane treatment of political prisoners, no matter what they have done. After all, aren't we supposed to be more compassionate than 'the other side?'

I even believe in the separation of church and state. Somehow, I thought that was one of the principles on which our country was founded.

So, if this brands me as a liberal, then I shall wear the brand proudly. But I'm still scratching my head wondering how my views are dangerous to anyone's freedom. I rather think that the danger lies in those who cannot tolerate views that are different from their own.
