DBT Week in Review - 3/6/09

DBT!

Go to the link and you can listen to an audio version of the interview. Good stuff.

Truckin' With Mike Cooley // The 'Zine // Rock Band:

"BM: Do you think the music industry is going to hell in a handbag?

MC: I hope so. [laughs] I hope it doesn’t take me with it. I feel like we’ve done a lot of things over the years, way before things got to this, to put ourselves in a position where we don’t have to go down with the ship. We’ve never really been part of that crew anyway. They’ll survive. They’ll keep manufacturing what they can manufacture until they figure out how to do something else. It has changed. This thing we’re talking about here – Rock Band – and the way people find and get exposed to and buy music, it’s gone totally left field from what it used to be. You don’t even know where it’s going to pop up anymore. It’s not as simple or cut and dried, and it’s not an industry or market that can be cornered by any one entity. It’s a lot more wide open and more different people with different ideas. I think the record industry and the auto industry and all these other industries that are crapping their pants, it’s not the economy – it’s being stuck in a business model that hasn’t been relevant since about 1989. It’s a failure to adapt."

Travis Wammack's son, Monkey, who, if memory serves me, was once the touring drummer for Little Richard, once paid me one of the highest complements I've ever received.

I was still in grad school so my voice was very trained and I'd come home for a visit. A local joint was doing some karaoke and I decided to jump on stage to do my pantie dropping version of Moon Dance by Van Morrison.

After I finished, Monkey pulled me aside and said that that was the best version of that song he'd heard in a long time.

So, yeah, I use to could sing, but my voice is crap now.

Nice memory to have, though.

Of Dogs and Cats and Republicants

Where up is down and white is black and the traditional news media can't tell the difference between its ass and a hole in the ground.

Yes, show us.

Daily Kos: Bizarro GOP world

Ouch.

Met with Republican Rep. Mary Bono Mack from Riverside County's Coachella Valley. While a social moderate, Sonny Bono's widow is a solid conservative. Talked to her about Obama's $780 billion stimulus legislation. She's outraged that the plan has "$1 billion wasted on a magnetic-levitation train from L.A. to Sin City" - all at Nevada Sen. Harry Reid's doing.

After expressing my doubt that the Las Vegas line was actually in the bill's language, Bono Mack directs her staff to "get him the bill, it's right there, show him." A few minutes later, a staffer emerges with a copy and quietly says "it's not in the bill."

This is what happens when Republicans listen to their Dear Leader Rush Limbaugh. Alternate realities have a habit of colliding with the real world. And while the GOP's alternate reality once held sway in this country, those days are long past.

If Republicans want to keep themselves from being embarrassed like this time and time again, they might want to stop getting their information from conservative radio or Fox News:

Does ABC News understand how income tax works?:

"In reality, a family earning $255,000 will pay the higher tax rate only on its last $5,001 in income; the first $249,999 will continue to be taxed at the old rate. So intentionally lowering your income from $255,000 to $249,999 is counter-productive; it will result in a lower after-tax income."

Daily 'legalize it' news.

I'm readying my business plan.

Legalize marijuana Tom Ammiano | Salon News:

"On Feb. 23, the California State Assembly member introduced legislation that would regulate the cultivation and sale of marijuana, and then tax it. By legalizing pot, the San Francisco lawmaker argues, the state could reap huge new revenues. Currently pot is California's biggest cash crop, with annual sales reaching $14 billion. Vegetables, the state's second hottest agricultural product, take in a mere $5.7 billion. And California's famous grapes? A piddling $2.6 billion.

If passed, the Marijuana Control, Regulation and Education Act would give California control of pot in a manner similar to alcohol, while prohibiting its purchase to citizens under age 21. The state's tax collectors estimate the measure would bring in about $1.3 billion in new revenues a year."

He's not hiding. He's asked for President Obama and called for President Obama to fail. That's his view. And that's what he has enunciated. And whenever a Republican criticizes him, they have to run back and apologize to him and say they were misunderstood. He is the voice and the intellectual force and energy behind the Republican Party. He has been up front about what he views and hasn't stepped back from that, which is he hopes for failure. He said it and I compliment him for his honesty. But that's their philosophy that is enunciated by Rush Limbaugh and I think that's the wrong philosophy for America..."

New Lineup, new record and more things coming.... - lauderdale MySpace Blog:

"So it's 2009 and we've been pretty low key for a few months now.
The band has been rehearsing and recording with what I believe to be our strongest lineup to date. Along with Daniel's addition as second guitarist last year, we've recently added Ben Tanner on keys and Chris James (former Sons of Roswell) on bass. These guys both bring so much to the table and are valuable assets to the band. Lauderdale is a 5-piece band for the first time. I think it's safe to say I speak for everyone involved when I say that the new sound is better than ever. Tracking on the second album started last week and was a very pleasant experience. Because we all have jobs, school and families this will more that likely be a slow moving process. We will hopefully be able to put the record out early this summer. We'll keep you posted for sure. In the meantime, keep an eye on our show schedule, as we are planning on coming to your town this summer. We've added a few dates and will be adding lots more very soon.

Snot out of the Noses of the Student Body

As one who teaches in supposed 'higher education' all I can say is 'amen'.

The issues outlined in this article are the same ones that are making me seriously reconsider my line of work.

The biggest bunch of whiny-ass-titty-babies you've ever dealt with.... especially in the 'for-profit' education 'companies'. Because they are far more a 'company' than they are a 'university'.

Student Expectations Seen as Causing Grade Disputes - NYTimes.com:

"“Many students come in with the conviction that they’ve worked hard and deserve a higher mark,” Professor Grossman said. “Some assert that they have never gotten a grade as low as this before.”

He attributes those complaints to his students’ sense of entitlement.

“I tell my classes that if they just do what they are supposed to do and meet the standard requirements, that they will earn a C,” he said. “That is the default grade. They see the default grade as an A.”"
...............

"“I think that it stems from their K-12 experiences,” Professor Brower said. “They have become ultra-efficient in test preparation. And this hyper-efficiency has led them to look for a magic formula to get high scores.”

James Hogge, associate dean of the Peabody School of Education at Vanderbilt University, said: “Students often confuse the level of effort with the quality of work. There is a mentality in students that ‘if I work hard, I deserve a high grade.’ “"

S & A really expresses how I feel on the matter:

Scholars and Rogues An “A” for effort

What a professor did do was launch a study to quantify just how much snot runs out of the noses of the student body. Ellen Greenberger found that two thirds of students surveyed said that explaining to a professor that they were trying hard should count towards a better grade. It will be great fun to see this horde descend upon the workplace in a few years time and tell their bosses that trying hard should be factored into getting a raise.
..............

They’ve been coddled and told that they’re special for their whole lives. Here’s a lesson for the youth out there reading that won’t even cost one credit hour of tuition: you’re not special; you never will be special…at least not any more special than anyone else. A few of you are actually special, but you’re not bitching about how you should get an A for effort because you’re special. It’s a big, mean world out there and you’re going to have to take off the diapers someday. Or maybe you don’t think that you’ll have to take off the diapers, and that’s a more serious issue than whether or not a professor gives you the grade you expect.

And I've been on this side of the debacle too.

The professors, however, don’t get the worst of it. From what i can gather, the administrative offices at universities spend a silly amount of time dealing with this issue. Worse than the students are the parents who call to set things right for their baby and have been known to go so far as threatening legal action when the university isn’t being “fair”. If Mommy is still making phone calls on behalf of baby when baby reaches his twenties, we can safely assume that teachers throughout baby’s academic career have been hearing from mommy about how the family expects their baby to be treated.

Pork by any other name.....

How nice was it to have an actual President actually 'speak' last night. Barrack rocks.

The best part was when Richard Shelby scooted up to Obama when Obama was entering the hall. Shelby looked like he was apologizing in that special Republican way for the birth certificate gaffe and Obama graciously accepted the apology. Republicans in general last night upon Obama's entrance looked like a bunch of school girls trying to get in a hand shake.

Once you go Barrack....

No, these letters have been culled from the thousands the White House Correspondence Office receives each day from Americans who have taken the time to sit down and write to their president."

Your liberal media... not so liberal.

File this under 'no-shit'.

'Self-censoring' journalists gave visual nod to GOP: study:

"Journalists, so concerned with being accused of having a liberal agenda, will at times overreact by self-censoring themselves, resulting in more favorable coverage of Republicans, a new analysis of television coverage finds.

A book by two Indiana University professors details their study of the three broadcast networks' -- ABC, CBS and NBC -- presidential campaign coverage from 1992 to 2004. According to the analysis, the coverage favored Republican candidates in each election.

'We don't think this is journalists conspiring to favor Republicans. We think they're just so beat up and tired of being accused of a liberal bias that they unknowingly give Republicans the benefit in coverage,' said Maria Elizabeth Grabe, an associate professor at IU, who along with Associate Professor Erik Bucy, wrote Image Bite Politics: News and the Visual Framing of Elections. 'It's self-censorship that journalists might be imposing on themselves.'"

No-mo-hibition

Lots and lots of articles currently floating along the etherweb regarding the repeal of marijuana prohibition.

I wonder what's the over/under for this to become a reality. 10 years?

Daily Kos: Legalizing Marijuana More Popular Than Republicans

FiveThirtyEight.com: Politics Done Right: Americans Growing Kinder to Bud

Could be sooner in California.

The very first month I lived in San Francisco back in '99 I went to see Tom Ammiano debate SF mayoral icon Willie Brown. Ammiano was on the city counsel but previous to that he was a stand-up comic. And he's gay, too. Willie isn't a slouch when it comes to a retort either. That was the most hilarious debate I've ever witnessed.

Tom is currently serving in the state legislature and he introduced this piece of loveliness yesterday. If California really takes the reigns on legalizing marijuana we could see it happen across much of the country much sooner than 10 years.

Calif. lawmaker introduces bill to legalize pot:

"Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, a San Francisco Democrat, introduced a bill Monday that if approved by the California Legislature would put pot on the same legal footing as alcohol. Adults over the age of 21 would be allowed to buy it, and driving under the influence of marijuana would be prohibited.

Under Ammiano's proposal, which has been endorsed by some law enforcement officials, pot would be taxed at a rate of $50 per ounce and bring an estimated $1 billion into state coffers."
_______

Tough times call for the repeal of stupid Sunday blue laws.

Will the Recession Doom the Last Sunday Blue Laws?:

"A handful of state legislatures have declared it's closing time for Sunday alcohol sales restrictions, saying an extra day of sales could give their foundering budgets a much-needed shot of revenue. Those states - Georgia, Connecticut, Texas, Alabama and Minnesota - enjoy overwhelming voter support for an extra day of sales, but face opposition from members of the Christian right, who say that selling on Sunday undermines safety and tears apart families. 'During times of economic stress, our families are under enough pressure,' says Jim Beck, the president of the Georgia Christian Coalition. 'I don't think we need to add even more pressure to those families by passing this law.'"

GOP: ISPs, Wi-Fi Must Keep Logs For Police, Proposed Data Retention Law Covers All Internet Providers, Even Your Home Wi-Fi Access, To Combat Child Porn - CBS News:

"CNET) Republican politicians on Thursday called for a sweeping new federal law that would require all Internet providers and operators of millions of Wi-Fi access points - even hotels, local coffee shops and home users - to keep records about users for two years to aid police investigations.

The legislation, which echoes a measure proposed by one of their Democratic colleagues three years ago, would impose unprecedented data retention requirements on a broad swath of Internet access providers and is certain to draw fire from businesses and privacy advocates."

When is incest not really incest? When you're in Alabama, apparently.

Not blood related. Both of age. Yet, incest.

Two charged with incest - The Times Daily | Florence, AL:

"FLORENCE - An east Florence man and his stepdaughter have been charged with incest after their sexual encounters were reportedly videotaped and photographed, authorities said.

Heather Ann Montanez, 20, 3202 Huntsville Road, Florence, and 43-year-old Kenneth John Trieber, 4702 Huntsville Road, Florence, have been charged with four counts of incest, authorities said.

Incest is a felony in Alabama and can involve people who are not blood relatives. The law states that having sex with a stepchild or stepparent is considered incest."

Yo-Yo Republicans

Richard Shelby is a fucking moron. He is lower than low.

There is a reason the best and brightest flee Alabama like the goddamn plague.

People say that Richard Shelby doesn't fuck goats, but I haven't seen a police report to confirm or deny, so.....

Richard Shelby, Alabama Senator, Questions Obama's Citizenship:

"Another local resident asked Shelby if there was any truth to a rumor that appeared during the presidential campaign concerning Obama's U.S. citizenship, or lack thereof.

'Well his father was Kenyan and they said he was born in Hawaii, but I haven't seen any birth certificate,' Shelby said. 'You have to be born in America to be president.'

According to the Associated Press, state officials in Hawaii checked health department records during the campaign and determined there was no doubt Obama was born in Hawaii."

Hells to the yeah. Super train this entire country. I'd much rather kick back on a high speed train that have to deal with the airport.

Another area in which we are far behind the rest of the world.

Obama plots huge railroad expansion:

"Railroads made Chicago, and now a Chicago-rich White House wants to return the favor: remaking rail with a huge new federal investment in high-speed passenger trains.

The $787.2 billion economic recovery bill — to be signed by President Barack Obama on Tuesday — dedicates $8 billion to high-speed rail, most of which was added in the final closed-door bargaining at the instigation of White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel.

It’s a sum that far surpasses anything before attempted in the United States — and more is coming. Administration officials told Politico that when Obama outlines his 2010 budget next week, it will ask for $1 billion more for high-speed rail in each of the next five years."

'We need messengers to really capture that region - young, Hispanic, black, a cross section ... We want to convey that the modern-day GOP looks like the conservative party that stands on principles. But we want to apply them to urban-surburban hip-hop settings.'"
