DBT Week in Review - 5/20/11

Drive-By Truckers @ Leeds Metropolitan University 11.05.11 | Bearded Magazine: The Home of Independent Music:
"The best part of the next hour and three quarters then proceeds to prove that not only can music make grown men cry, smile and pretend they are can play an invisible Les Paul, but that chart success and number one singles are in no way a seal of quality or authenticity (and in no way is that an accusation that 50 Cent isn't an expert on contraceptives) and more importantly, if the Drive-By Truckers continue to move their audiences like they have this gig, and sound as genuine and heartfelt as they always have, then the rest will hopefully fall into place... If a representative of Durex is reading this however, maybe the world is as long overdue on a Double Thick Dirty South or an 18 Wheels Of Love Variety Pack as the Truckers are on a top ten album... Just a thought."

10 Giants of Southern Rock Guitar:
"With their heady mix of fuzzed-up riff rock, rootsy acoustic shuffles and Crazy Horse-like excursions into the wild blue yonder, the Drive-By Truckers offer up an especially ambitious brand of southern rock. Favoring SGs and Gold Top Deluxes, frontman Patterson Hood generally tunes down a whole step in order to achieve the Truckers’ distinctive sound. The band’s sprawling 2001 opus, Southern Rock Opera, paid conscious tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allmans, and the Marshall Tucker Band."

Film Review: The Secret to a Happy Ending at Northwest Film Forum:
"Drive-By Truckers is a musical family affair; not just because inspired leader singer/songwriter Patterson Hood is the son of extremely supportive Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section bass player David Hood, or the fact that he has been collaborating with fellow Shoals, North Alabama vocalist/guitarist Mike Cooley for decades. DBT is an extended filial force driven by a web of affection and responsibility within the band — which also includes another vivid vocalist and tunesmith, Jason Isbell, married to bass player Shannon Tucker; and longtime drummer Brad Morgan — and a deep connection to their fans."

Jeff Pollack: The Music Industry's New Model: Where Is It?
"Individual artist apps aren't new...in 2009, some of the major labels rolled out apps for a few of their largest artists built largely around exclusive access to video content, mainly performance clips, promotional items, and behind-the-scenes peeks. But that simply is not enough; there has to a more unique offering to entice real fan engagement. Artists can only generate real revenue from apps on a long-term basis if the fan is getting something they deem valuable.

So, the battle to discover the new model continues on all fronts as the realization sinks in that the answer surely will be a combination of ideas (such as bundled subscriptions, cool artist apps, compelling fan experiences), not one magic solution. One thing won't be the answer, everything will be."

Living With Music: A Playlist by Michael Koryta - Paper Cuts Blog - NYTimes.com:
"11) A Ghost to Most, the Drive-By Truckers. “I guess I’ll never grow sideburns, it’s a shame with all I’ve got to go between.” A just consistently great band, by turns funny and dark, but always sharp and always rocking. “So Cold the River” features a bright but resentful country boy, prone to flashes of temper, and the Drive-By Truckers and Reckless Kelly became the heart of my soundtrack for those point-of-view portions."
_______

Vic Chesnutt: When the Bottom Fell Out | Spin Magazine Online:
"A few hours after I meet Gelb, the Drive-by Truckers' Patterson Hood is onstage at the 40 Watt Club, in front of a crowd more in the mood for a raucous wake than a reverent memorial. Hood saw Chesnutt for the first time at the 40 Watt back in the mid-'90s and was blown away.

'Pretty much from the first song, I stood there with my mouth gaping open, amazed,' he tells me later. 'It was almost like a religious experience. He had this fearlessness about exposing things about himself or his feelings about things that might make people cringe or make his grandmama cry, but he could write about the most dark, primal stuff and still somehow be funny.'"
_______

DBT refuses that long journey to the middle | Beyond the Trestle:
"As this little rambling comes to a close, I can’t help but extend the Truckers’ experience in the music world to the lives that we all lead. Today may be shitty. Yesterday may have been a trial. But, if you work hard, take a few chances, and trust your skills, you too could end up with the success you deserve. Or at least you will know you did the things that were true to your soul. Cooley, Hood and the rest of you, thanks for the lesson."
_______

Petty & Heartbreakers: America's greatest rock 'n' roll band:
"When Patterson Hood finished singing, he laid his guitar down on stage, still plugged in and walked off. He was followed, one-by-one, by Mike Cooley and the rest of the band, leaving the stage empty when the music ended. Wow."
_______

Petty and the Heartbreakers at their best when they stick to the hits - TwinCities.com:
"Openers the Drive-By Truckers, a club-level band with the spirit of a '70s Southern rock act, likely earned a few new followers with their performance.

They delivered a roaring, hourlong set with far more energy — and a far higher volume — than most stage-warmers. Kudos to Petty for letting them really crank it."
_______

YouTube - Drive-By Truckers Acoustic at Harvest Records -- Record Store Day

Lights out | Rock Candy | Arkansas Times:
"The crowd left drenched, but happy, after seeing one of the better rock shows to come through Little Rock since the last time the band was in town."

Music I Fucking Love

Jeff Soileau posted his song "Muscle Shoals" on Patterson's Facebook page earlier this week. His son, Evan, created the video. Both song and video are very fine work. The first line is such a large part of the lore of the Shoals. So many variations of that story and not at all a myth. I've seen catfish 4-5 feet in length and so old that they had algae growing on their backs.

The rest of the tune is a great history lesson of Northwest, AL.

Yes, we were very close to being Detroit. Very close.

Here's the vid....

Check out more tunes from Jeff...

jeff soileau on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads

BUT, what really captured my fancy about this tune was the vocalist, Lera Lynn. An Athens native (wtf is in the water down their, seriously... Athen's should have its own MTV).

I couldn't be more enamored with this woman. I've always been a sucker for female songstresses but, lawdy, I've been listening to her all week long. No, it doesn't hurt that she OMG beautiful (hey, I think Shakira is beautiful too, but if she opens her mouth and the volume is still on, I'm reaching for a bat to smash things and knitting needles to puncture my ear drums) BUT, she also is a mighty fine strummer (been trying to copy her all week w/0 much luck) and her voice is this ethereal soul-rangy perfection.

So, yes, I'm musically smitten. This is what makes music so very special. It is like finding magic that's been there all along. Keeps hope alive.

Makes me want to move to Athens... and y'all know my going-back-to-the-south issues. Powerful stuff.

Check out Lera Lynn:

I've played this about 3o times this week. I'm really digging the production by AthensSoundies, too. This video moans 'Athens'. Porch singing, summer rain on broad, green leaves...

The GOP's Deliberate Sabotage

The GOP's Deliberate Sabotage.

It's been their strategy since day one. God forbid the 'unpleasantness' of it all sully those poor, poor 'reporters' fragile little minds.

The Washington Monthly:
"It's unpleasant to think about, and I really hope it's not true, but it may be time for a discussion about whether GOP lawmakers are trying to deliberately sabotage the economy to help their midterm election strategy. After all, these same Republicans have supported deficit-financed tax-extenders before -- there's no credible reason to change course now. On the contrary, with the economy struggling to break through, the need for this package is more obvious, not less, if your goal is to actually improve economic conditions."

Courtland Milloy - Tolerance of white militias exemplifies racial double standard:

Suppose thousands of heavily armed black men began gathering at training camps in wooded areas throughout the country, devising military tactics for 'taking back their country' after what they believed was an electoral coup.

Do you think Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney would have reacted to a black militaristic buildup as coolly as President Obama has to the phenomenal growth of white militias?"
