The Grand Lie

The Grand Lie will very soon lead to The Grand Bargain in which the middle class (what remains) will get thoroughly screwed by Obama, other fake Democrats and the Republicans. Bank on it.

Van Jones on the deficit: ‘We are not stupid. We can do the math.’ | The Raw Story:
"On stage, Jones used his speech, at times funny, at times tragic, to push back on the idea that America is out of money. “We keep hearing America -- the richest country in the history of the world is broke,” he said. “This is a very dangerous lie, because once you believe this a whole lot of other things start to sound acceptable.”

Using graphics, he gave the audience an educational lesson on where American money is going: Wall Street ($144 billion in compensation this year, a record high), the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, the loss of revenue from the Bush tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans and corporate tax loopholes. “The pie, the country’s GDP, is getting bigger!” he said. “It’s just your slice that is getting smaller. The social contract between corporate America and the rest of America is broken.”

“Tax Wall Street fairly, wind down the wars responsibly, roll back the Bush tax cuts and close corporate loopholes,” Jones said. “We are not stupid. We can do the math.”"

More and more, it’s becoming clear that progressives who had their hearts set on Obama were engaged in a huge act of self-delusion. They're a Little (Ayn) Randy

Damn. He just came out and said it. Spoke the straight up truth.

He's too right. While it may no longer be acceptable to be overtly racist in the South, that doesn't mean that the racism has vanished. It still lives in many a Southern heart because it has never truly been dealt with. On a personal/family level. Not saying other regions of the country don't have the same issue, but most of these teabaggers are white, old, pissed off, and Southern.

This really is amazing stuff for a Southerner of Carter's stature to come right out and say it.

Not surprised that it didn't get much play in the media. Democrats talking sense rarely do.

_______

This is a hell of a read.

I've read both Atlas and Fountainhead 3 times a piece. The first time I read both, I had no clue of the political/social/economic aspirations of Rand or the books. The 2nd and 3rd time through I was very clear on which political beasts were clutching Ayn tight to their black bosoms.

I like both books. There's a kernal to be taken from each regarding individuality and taking care of yourself. But, and this is a big but, these two book's lessons are similar to the lessons offered by the Bible or Greek mythology. Literal interpretations of both are... well, stupid as fuck. The Bible justifies slavery and the beating of your wife. Greek mythology... we'll let's just say one shouldn't diddle their mommy.

The sales of these two books have exploded in the past year. I doubt very seriously that your average mom and pop are buying. Hell, no way they would ever be able to sit down and read both of these tomes. It would require too much focus and patience. The sales are due to bulk purchases by right wing groups, I'm almost positive.

I like the stories. A few nuggets worthy of applying to your life. But as a political/economic/social blue print, her work is utter bullshit.

She was bat-shit crazy and meaner than a snake, too.

And 'Cultism' it really is.

Daily Kos: Sociopathy on the Right: Ayn Rand and the Triumph of Conservative Cultism:

"Interestingly, despite her general disdain for humanity, there were people she seemed to admire greatly, such as William Edward Hickman, whose credo, 'What is good for me is right,' she described in her Journals as, 'The best and strongest expression of a real man's psychology I have heard.' But Hickman was no simple expositor of personal greed and self-interest; no mere modern day libertarian; no pedestrian practitioner of excessive self-love. No indeed. He was a sociopathic murderer. In 1927 he kidnapped a 12-year old girl from a school in Los Angeles by the name of Marian Parker, chopped off her legs, cut our her internal organs, drained all of her blood and then spread parts of her body all over the city."

Angela's Asses

It became 'anti-American' because the Republicans said so. Simple, see.

Ex-CIA agent: When did questioning the CIA become anti-American?

Since Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi suggested that the CIA misled her in 2002 concerning its use of waterboarding, the Republican Party has been attempting to paint her claims as outrageous.

Former CIA special agent and radio host Jack Rice finds the Republicans’ outrage unconvincing. He told MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann on Tuesday, “What’s extraordinary here is the idea that if you would ever question the CIA, now all of a sudden somehow it’s anti-American.”

“What’s extraordinary to me is that I’ve seen the Republicans do this over and over,” Rice explained. “They will wrap something in the flag … and they will put a little lapel pin on it that says ‘national security.’ And if you ask a question about it, somehow you’re anti-American. And that’s what they’ve been trying to do to Nancy Pelosi for about six years.”

Rice has no illusions about the CIA’s vulnerability to pressure during the Bush administration. “Anybody who believes that an administration can’t push the Agency to do something is really missing the point,” he told Olbermann. “The fact that they can push the Agency and say, ‘This is what I’m looking for’ … will drive them to do certain things that may or may not be true — and that’s a big part of the problem that we’re facing right now.”

_______

Amen to that.

Top Powell aide says Congress is most ’spineless’ he’s seen in 65 years

The former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell — who of late has been supportive of more liberal positions — launched a stunning broadside against the Democratic-controlled Congress Wednesday, asserting that it’s been “spineless” when it comes to oversight and the most feckless he’s seen in 65 years.

Former Powell aide Col. Lawrence Wilkerson said he agrees with Democrats who say the CIA isn’t known for telling the truth. But he also launched a salvo at Congress for its alleged failure to investigate abuses of power.

“We could have less feckless leadership in the Congress in terms of oversight,” Wilkerson said. “And I’m not just talking about the Select Committees in the House and the Senate for Intelligence. I’m talking about the leadership in the Congress.

“This has been the most feckless Congress ever since 2000 that I’ve seen in my 65 years,” Wilkerson added. “I just don’t think there’s leadership over there. It’s spineless, it lacks courage, lacks political will.

He continued: “I shudder for the fact that we’ve got to face these economic and financial challenges we’ve got to face — Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea and other things — and we don’t have a Congress that has any leadership.”

Wilkerson also told CNN’s Kiran Chetry that the CIA regularly didn’t tell the whole truth in briefings. “The leadership of the CIA does not have a stellar record about telling the full and unequivocal truth about its covert operations,” he said.

The Beast with Two Backs

Good, Obama administration, good!

Obama's Serious About Taking an Axe to Corruption and Waste at the Pentagon :

"Of all Barack Obama’s promises of reform, perhaps the most audacious is his pledge to “restore honesty, openness, and commonsense to Pentagon contracting and procurement.” Washington is littered with the open-jawed skeletons of such efforts, and given the historic length of the White House to-do list, some might say taking on the defense establishment smacks of hubris. But a raft of recent statements, directives, and appointments indicate the administration fully intends to chaperone Pentagon shopping trips and hold defense contractors accountable in a way they never have been before."

"Where does soul music go in this century? On the surface, it looks like straight to England, as rhythm & blues did in the ‘60s with the Animals, Rolling Stones and others. But artists like Duffy and Amy Winehouse, as strong as they can be, are more refraction than inspiration. They’re basically working with mirrors. Break-Out

I've been purposely avoiding politics as a little break for myself until the beginning of the new year.

But I read this and I couldn't agree more.

I wouldn't mind one bit if Reid lost his reelection bid in 2010.

FiveThirtyEight.com: Politics Done Right: On Making Mitch McConnell Wet His Pants:

"I don't imagine the culture of the Senate changing in the new Congress so long as it's under Reid's direction, and Reid is highly unlikely to be replaced. There is some chance, however, that Obama rather than Reid will dictate the tone, particularly if Joe Biden is dispatched to Capitol Hill fairly often."
......
The bottom line, however, is that the Republicans are filibustering more and more often because they can get away with it. If Reid can't get them to pay a greater public price, then the Democrats ought to find somebody else who can.

He was very productive when I knew him. I used to say to him, ‘You should be writing!' And he'd say, ‘You are right!' Then he'd pull out his typewriter and get to work.”"

Secret Santas in 3 states spread cheer, $100 bills :

"ST. LOUIS – At a suburban Goodwill store on Friday, Theresa Settles selected a large, black comforter to warm her family until she can raise the money to turn the gas heat back on. A petite woman approached, her face obscured by dark sunglasses and a wrapped winter scarf, and handed Settles two $100 bills stamped with the words 'secret Santa.' 'The only condition,' she said, 'is that you do something nice for someone. Pass it on.'

'I will,' Settles said, the only words she could get out of her mouth.

The secret Santa was a protege of Kansas City's undercover gift giver, Larry Stewart, who died of cancer nearly two years ago. Stewart roamed city streets each December doling out $100 bills to anyone who looked like they might need a lift."

"What is the relationship between music and politics - and how, if at all, has this relationship affected your music?

P: I think all aspects of life are affected by politics so therefore everything is somewhat political. To pretend otherwise is a dangerous slope and a big reason why we as a nation got into as much trouble as we have. I really try not to ever stand up there and preach my political beliefs to the audience, as that's not what they've come to the show for, but it does affect the writing and it's no secret how I (or the rest of the band) feel about things. I tend to write about more personal aspects of character's lives, but often the two are intermingled."

DBT! DBT! DBT!

Patterson posted a great tour diary that's a must read. Here's one of many highlights.

Drive-By Truckers:

"The mood was, however, lightened up significantly a few hours before show time when Shonna broke into the room while Cooley was taking a shower, stealing all of his clothes and leaving in their place a red dress she had recently purchased. Cooley had been (has always been) playing a crude sort of practical joke on all aboard and had evidently violated a sort of ceasefire agreement they had struck so she retaliated, causing Cooley to have to ride down the elevator, walk through the lobby and proceed about two blocks wearing Shonna's red dress. Shonna, of course tipped us all off so we could have cameras, camcorders and various other recording devices ready to capture the moment for posterity. (Watch for it on YouTube).

The scariest part is how well Cooley actually looks in a red dress. It is definitely time for me to go home."

Didn't know this happened. Click the link for a nice picture of Cooley and Bettye:

Bettye LaVette and Drive-By Truckers Bring Soul, the South to Rothbury Fest : Rolling Stone : Rock and Roll Daily:

"but the real highlight came when LaVette joined the Truckers for a smoldering take on “Jealousy” that left the normally verbose Hood speechless. “Bettye left us all a little flabbergasted,” he announced, shaking his head and trying to compose himself."

Alabama Slammer

Wow! Investigative journalism. Thought that was dead and gone.

Part one: How a coterie of Republican heavyweights sent a governor to jail

For most Americans, the very concept of political prisoners is remote and exotic, a practice that is associated with third-world dictatorships but is foreign to the American tradition. The idea that a prominent politician -- a former state governor -- could be tried on charges that many observers consider to be trumped-up, convicted in a trial that involved numerous questionable procedures, and then hauled off to prison in shackles immediately upon sentencing would be almost unbelievable.

But there is such a politician: Don Siegelman, Democratic governor of Alabama from 1999 to 2003. Starting just a few weeks after he took office, Siegelman was targeted by an investigation launched by his political opponents and escalated from the state to the federal level by Bush Administration appointees in 2001.

_______

Remember the good old days of the Nixon adminitration?

The Republicans who would've impeached Bush? | Salon.com

Nov. 26, 2007 | During the past six years, leading Republicans in Congress have prioritized allegiance to a Republican president above all other governmental and constitutional concerns. But there was a time when U.S. lawmakers, regardless of party affiliation, actually voted the way of their conscience. There was a time when a president could not break the law or ignore a summons from Congress with impunity. Indeed, by the height of Richard Nixon's Watergate scandal, a number of congressmen -- including Republicans staunchly loyal to their party -- acted to uphold the law and make Nixon accountable.

DBT Week in Review - 11/09/07

Been a while since I've posted a DBT WIR.

So away we go.

WLAY - AM is a radio station based out of the Shoals. They have currently switched to a format that showcases only tunes written and recorded in the Shoals. Freaking brilliant idea.

WLAY - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

"WLAY-AM is also part of the Florence/Muscle Shoals market and is heard at 1450 AM and on a translator at 92.3 on the FM band; it is licensed to the city of Muscle Shoals. WLAY-AM is reputed to be one of the oldest broadcast stations in Alabama and the Southern U.S. It presently airs only music written and recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL. Its Program and Music Director is Brian Rickman"
Sons of Roswell, Lauderdale, Jason Isbell and a host of other great Shoals artist are being played on WLAY-AM.

Obviously, I'm a big fan of Isbell but I want to reiterate that Sons and Lauderdale are two of my very favorite bands who I think and hope will be doing very big things soon.

WLAY-AM is also doing live on air sessions of local artists.

Lauderdale kicks off this series on November 13.

MySpace:

Mr. Isbell is up on the 12 of December.

This promises to be some great radio.

Cleveland - Music - Shifting Gears:

"Of course, after 20 years of writing together — first in their college band, Adam's House Cat, and now in the Drive-By Truckers — Cooley should know Hood pretty well. Looking back on their partnership, he says one thing comes to mind. 'What the fuck was I thinking?' Cooley chuckles, reflecting on all the wrong turns and cul-de-sacs along the way. 'At any given moment, one of us had a bad idea, and the other one agreed with it.'
.....
"Then he gets serious and remembers the moment — when both of them were in their 30s — that he felt their partnership just might succeed. They were working dead-end jobs and saw no future, but somehow, something clicked. 'Suddenly we got to a point where we didn't care; we were just having fun, and damn if people didn't start liking it.'"
.....
"'Once you start being honest with yourself and doing what it is you do, that's when it's going to work or not,' offers Cooley. 'And generally it does.'"

You’ve been so infiltrated by this corporate mentality that all the time you’d spend getting great songs together, you’re busy doing nine other things that have nothing to do with art. Cannabis use down since legal change

Gordon Brown's plans to tighten the law on cannabis by increasing the penalties for possession suffered a fresh blow yesterday as the latest official figures showed the decision to downgrade the drug had been followed by a significant fall in its use.

MySpace.com - View Comments:

'I think we need to be put back in touch with our childhood...to be reminded of what's important, like memories about people we loved, or things that happened to us that affected our lives, things we can laugh about and shed a few tears about... I think storytelling is a way of saying 'I love you. I love you enough to tell you something that means a great deal to me.' ' -- Kathryn Tucker Windham"
Ms Windham wrote a book called 13 Alabama Ghosts. If you were raised in Alabama you know this book about as well as you know the Bible. Especially around this time of year.

13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey:

"13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey is a book first published in 1969 by folklorist Kathryn Tucker Windham and her former English teacher, Margaret Gillis Figh. The book contains thirteen 'true' ghost stories from the U.S. state of Alabama. The book was the first in a series of seven '...and Jeffrey' books, most featuring ghost stories from a Southern state. Jeffrey in the book's title refers to a ghost that allegedly haunts Windham's home."

MySpace.com - Chris McKay & The Critical Darlings - ATHENS, GA, Georgia

In 2007, the Critical Darlings expanded to a quartet (with the addition of guitarist / vocalist Joe Orr and drummer Josh Coulliard) and have started work on their second album, tentatively titled Satisfactionista, with producer David Barbe (R.E.M., Drive-By Truckers) behind the board. Of special interest is the collaboration with David Bowie’s inimitable pianist Mike Garson (Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans) who appears on the track “Something Unseen” (which also finds Drive-By Truckers’ Brad Morgan on drums). If that’s not enough, The Darlings are one of the first to employ Pete Townshend’s Lifehouse Method in “co-composing” several tracks with The WHO’s songwriter / guitarist via software that produces a unique song based on data input. It's no wonder that Lee Valentine Smith of Creative Loafing has named the Critical Darlings “a great little buzz-worthy band” and dubbed McKay “power pop potentate.” For more info, mp3s, photos and the latest updates, visit...

75 or Less album reviews.:

" Lauderdale: Eleven of the thirteen tracks come in between 3:18 and 3:55, so they know the formula and execute it effortlessly. 'Exhale' reminds me of a grittier Gin Blossoms with Eddie Vedder-like vocals while 'Breathless P.M.' slows things down and adds a slide guitar. At different points they seem on the verge of anger, but instead cooler heads prevail and no punches are thrown. Overall, consistency rules and highs and lows are avoided. It echoes the Goo Goo Dolls thirty drummers ago crossed with mid-tempo Americana country rock. - mark"
