DBT Week in Review - 10/8/10

DBT!

A conversation with Drive-By Truckers' Patterson Hood [Music] | Louisville.com:
"But I'd say we probably at any given time have 125, 140 songs to choose from, to pull out at any moment. So, anything can go."
_______

Drive-By Truckers @ The Pabst Theater:
"If the phrase “salt of the earth” could describe any band, it would be the Drive-By Truckers—one of those rare groups that manage to exude authenticity and humility at the same time. So it was appropriate that the Athens, Ga.-based band was tapped to officially kick off Farm Aid, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this weekend at Miller Park. Like those Farm Aid champions, the Truckers keep their heads down, work hard and turn out amazing products on an almost yearly basis."
_______

Live Review: Drive-By Truckers, 9.29.10, Iowa City, IA - The Milk Carton - Forums:
"Very few bands have captured my imagination in recent times like Drive-By Truckers. I initially heard the band in my preparation for covering Lollapalooza 2010, and I haven’t looked back. The band’s got an impressively deep discography, and the surface was barely scratched at the festival. Needless to say, I pounced on tickets the second I saw they were giving me a hometown show. I gathered some friends, gathered some whiskey, and made my way to the show."
_______

Review Setlist: Drive-By Truckers and the Henry Clay People at the Pageant - St. Louis Music - A to Z:
"There are very few certainties in life, but there's one thing you can always count on: If Athens, Georgia's Drive-By Truckers are in town, you have the opportunity to see one of the best rock n'roll shows money can buy. That situation presented itself Saturday night, and roughly 2,000 folks took advantage of said opportunity -- each of which were rewarded in the form of rock n'roll salvation."

Will Johnson - Musical Genius

The Sound and the Fury: Austin's own Monster of Folk, Will Johnson Austin Music - AustinChronicle.com:
"'Centro-matic is my favorite band,' proclaims Patterson Hood of the Drive-by Truckers, who drafted Johnson and Danbom for his 2009 solo album, Murdering Oscar (And Other Love Songs), and accompanying tour. 'I was a huge fan long before I met them. I don't know if I can even put it into words. Every once in a while, something comes along that's just like nectar music. It's got everything I like in one place, as if I've been hearing it all my life.

'Centro-matic ought to be one of the biggest bands of the world. They're a fourpiece without an ounce of flab, and Will Johnson is just an ungodly great singer and player. I hope I've been influenced by him.'"

DBT Week in Review - 11/06/09

Here is a great discussion thread of about 11 pages from the Timesdaily sent to me by CH/Zoid.

Great insight into.... shit, several of DBT/Isbell songs regarding the area of the country we grew up in. I ran with some of the sons of the folks mentioned here and worked for a few others.

One crazy ass part of the world. Sometimes I wonder how I'm still walking around.

And yes, Dawson = Lawson. (Correction: I've been notified that Dawson does not equal Lawson, which is another can of local shit. Should have checked my source, dammit!)

Words from the Hood:

Drive-By Truckers:

"Decompressing from our late October run.
Very happy with the shows on all levels.
Don't think the band has ever played better than we have in the last six months.
As we are winding down The Righteous Path Tour of shows and starting to gear up for next years' new releases and tours, we are all very excited about what we did this year in the studio and out on the road and really fired up about going out and playing these new songs next year.

This month, the band is tying up some loose ends and starting our preparations for next year.
We are about to announce our annual Athens GA / 40 Watt Homecoming Shows and annual Nuci's Space Benefit.
I'll go ahead and spill a few of the beans to y'all now:
The weekend will be Jan. 14th - 16th."

Live review: Drive-By Truckers at Stubb's | Austin Music Source

OK, I’m passing through the final stage of grief and find myself at acceptance at Jason Isbell’s having left the Drive-By Truckers, what, 17 years ago?

Thursday night’s show at Stubb’s, from Mike Cooley’s “Gravity’s Gone” to the last moments of Lynyrd Skynyrd rave-up “Angels and Fuselage,” which finished the encore because absolutely nothing else could follow it, was as good a show as I’ve seen them do since their third guitarist-singer-songwriter went solo. The aught-nine version of the band is decidedly funkier — that Muscle Shoals influence is burbling to the surface more. And a new one that bassist Shonna Tucker sang (from a spring release to be called “The Big To-Do”) sounded positively Motown.

But at their core these guys are Southern-fried chroniclers of hard-luck characters — Uncle John, he ain’t been right since Vietnam — and cemetary groundskeepers pondering a leap into the abyss. Uplifting, no? Good thing they can seriously rock. Guitarist-singer-songwriter-loquacious talker Patterson Hood took a lot of leads last night and all three guitarists seemed hell-bent on making as much racket as possible, no matter whom else they were fighting for solo space. I never saw Lynyrd Skynrd but I sure saw Drive-By Truckers. And I will again. Like the man said: Let there be rock.

But next time, guys, please play “Carl Perkins’ Cadillac.” Don’t make me grovel; it demeans us both.

Concert Review: Drive-By Truckers at House of Blues (October 28) | pegasusnews.com | Dallas / Fort Worth:

"The energy was so intense, I wondered what they could do for a satisfactory encore, and halfway through the first song I got my answer as Brent Best (Slobberbone and The Drams) ambled onto stage with a guitar in hand. But then, as four guitars were clearly not enough, bandmate Jess Barr showed up for the show closer, a rousing cover of Jim Carroll's 'People Who Died.'"

"Drive-By Truckers, Southern Rock Opera

“In terms of using sparse language to explain complex ideas (and in terms of using straightforward music to express a sense of time and place), I can’t think of a better record than this. It always sounds totally real, and the details are thick (particularly about Bear Bryant, George Wallace, and Blue Oyster Cult). I probably listened to this CD 100 times while I was writing Downtown Owl. It was absolutely the single-biggest influence on that novel.”"
_______

Very Extremely Dangerous Singles:

"But that hasn’t stopped him from launching his latest project, a series of limited-edition 45-rpm vinyl singles by the likes of Greg Dulli, Drive-By Truckers, Heartless Bastards and Wussy in tribute to the late Eddie Hinton. The first two 45s, covers of Hinton songs by Dulli and the Truckers, come out locally on Tuesday and nationally on Nov. 24.

Blase is pressing just 2,000 copies of each record. He figures half of that run will be sold through Shake It and its mail-order operation and half through other independent record stores. Ultimately he plans a set of 10 discs."

Excellent read:

pandagon.net

Raftery decides the switch is due to three factors: the emergence of late 90s/early 00s super-singable pop songs by Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys that are easy enough to sing that anyone feels comfortable trying, the popularity of “American Idol”, and the normalizing karaoke scene in “Lost In Translation”, a scene that really captures how karaoke works a lot better if people involved take their performances seriously, instead of doing a performance whose whole point is how you’re above all this. I think he’s on to something, but he doesn’t go far enough, though part of the reason is the culture changed even more since he was writing this book, which came out in 2008. I think it’s because Americans are increasingly putting a premium on fantasy and performance as valuable things, when in the past, these things were considered children’s fare that proper adults grow out of. (Unless they’re professionals, like actors or musicians.) And even though Raftery and I agree that “ironic” karaoke performances---where the person mocks the process of karaoke while performing---are stupid, I will say the ironic bent of American culture since really the late 60s on has a lot to do with this. It’s about playfulness, at its core, and once you start allowing and even requiring adults to be playful, then fantasy and performance are not far behind.

"Last night I went to my first arena concert in a very long time. I've pretty much sworn off big arena shows because they are overpriced and the prices charged for food and drink are insulting. The list of people I will pay over $50 to see live is very small and until last night Bruce Springsteen wasn't on that list. Last night I had two free tickets and the next time he comes around I will probably buy a ticket."

"Put 'em in the Graveyard" - Marah's MySpace Blog |:

"In the past our band never played many new songs before records were 'officially' released. We always felt new albums/new songs were best absorbed as complete thoughts...records had sequence and rhythm, each song made more sense propped up by its fellow jams, and as the final guitars or bagpipes rang out you could feel like you'd been on a kinda rock & roll journey. We still feel that way. But...

Considering it's been such a long time since we shared a song and dance together we wanna put this out there for y'all...something new to enjoy and discuss while we wait for the other shoe to drop. We also promise that your $contribution will not be blown in some smoky pub but will aid us greatly in bringing a lot more 'unreleased' Marah music into the world this year. Teenage folk singer Taylor Mitchell killed by coyotes in Canadian park - Times Online:

"A teenage folk singer hailed as a rising star in Canada has been mauled to death by two coyotes while hiking alone in woods during a solo tour. The attack took place as Taylor Mitchell, 19, was walking on a trail in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia."

Taylor Mitchell :: From Taylor's Mom:

I've noticed that the media have often mentioned that Taylor was hiking alone when the coyote attack occurred. I want people to know that Taylor was a seasoned naturalist and well versed in wilderness camping. She loved the woods and had a deep affinity for their beauty and serenity. Tragically it was her time to be taken from us so soon.

We take a calculated risk when spending time in nature's fold-- it's the wildlife's terrain. When the decision had been made to kill the pack of coyotes, I clearly heard Taylor's voice say, 'please don't, this is their space'. She wouldn't have wanted their demise, especially as a result of her own. She was passionate about animals, was an environmentalist, and was also planning to volunteer at the Toronto Wildlife Centre in the coming months."

Taylor Mitchell :: Taylor Mitchell Memorial Fund:

"The Mitchell family has set up a Memorial Fund in Taylor's name. It hasn't yet been decided exactly how the fund will be used but some ideas being discussed include: a yearly scholarship to a songwriting student at Etobicoke Shool for the Arts (Taylor's alma mater); a yearly prize for an outstanding young performer at the Canadian Folk Music Awards; a bursary for a young touring performer; a donation to charity.
Give her music a listen today to honor her and her talent.

The singer claims the trio burst into a meeting between Davis and Sean 'Diddy' Combs, throwing the rapper out and threatening the record executive with guns.

She tells talk show host Mo'Nique, 'We held the record company, Clive Davis, hostage with guns. Guns with bullets. DBT Week in Review - 10/9/09

I'm swamped, y'all!

Not much DBT content this week, but next week I'll have a special Hardly Strictly post with video from Booker and DBT's set along with some other amazing stuff from other artists.

First time out with a new video camera, so lots to clean up. My rookieness will be apparent, but some good stuff to be seen. Mo' later.

Here are a couple of pics.

On stage (no shit. I could have picked up an instrument and played along) with Billy Joe Shaver.

And here's backstage at the main stage. This is quickly become on of the all time favorite pictures I've ever taken. I've got a big ass version on my MAC desktop and I find something new in the pic everyday.

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are on stage.

_______

Do have a bit of DBT for you.

Isn't this just a kick ass piece of art?

I'll let the artist explain. She posted this on DBT's Facebook page.

Dexateens

NBA Playa Paul Shirley's got great taste in music, but he's off about Dexateen's studio work. That shit is the bomb.

Rain, lawn chairs test my limits at Austin - ESPN

I rush into the grounds with visions of greatness in my head. Chris has been raving about a band he helps manage, The Dexateens, for months. I've listened to two of their albums, but left each encounter with their recorded work thoroughly underwhelmed.

Lee Bains leans into the mike and says, "We're the Dexateens, and we're from Alabama." Thirty seconds later, I can tell that the Dexateens are what the kids call the real deal. I decide that the band needs to hire a new recording engineer because whatever it is that they are doing onstage has not yet been translated to an album. Aping the Drive-By Truckers' legendary Three-Axe Attack (which I've always wanted to write -- it means there are three guitars), the 'teens form a wall of dirty Southern rock sound that is complemented by the harmonizing of Bains, John Smith and Elliott McPherson. I like the band's sound. I like their happy, dancing bassist. I like that most of the group is driving to New Orleans for a show that night. And I really like that they have to be back in Alabama by tomorrow morning, because one of their members has to play in church.

_______

Rock Candy: Last night: The Dexateens

Thursday night, beneath the banner of the Arkansas state flag on the back wall of White Water’s stage sat Brian Gosdin, drummer for the Dexateens, BAMA emblazoned across his T-shirt, attending his houndstooth-adorned drum kit, just in case there was any confusion about where these boys hail from.

Typically, the Tuscaloosa country-rockers’ lineup has featured three guitarists, but last night, founding member John Smith was nowhere to be found. Pre-set, front man Lee Bains III admitted that Smith had abruptly split from the band not days ago, this just before their first showing at the Austin City Limits music festival. It was clear Smith’s exit had rocked them, but luckily for us, as musicians are wont to do, the Dexateens managed to unload all that anxiety into their show

Jason Molina and Will Johnson Collaborate on New LP, Plot European Tour

Call this the Phantoms of Folk. Call this two lone wolves running together for one dark blissout of a night. Two of the finest indie-folk songwriters of the last decade come together under the Texas sky to quietly lay to tape 14 crushing, haunting tunes, leaving space enough in each to match their surroundings. In this collaboration between Jason Molina and Will Johnson, each seem to hold the other’s talents to fire and elevate both performance and creativity. In the friendly sharing of ideas, Molina and Johnson become two poet’s poets in a workshop, aimed to craft a singular, searing elegy.

Will Johnson describes this alignment of two red stars: “For ten days we wrote, co-wrote, workshopped, complimented, scrutinized, drank, invited friends to come play music, smoked, made lots of notes and drawings, drank a little more and shot the BB gun off the back porch when we just needed some time and space. In the throes of all this, our record was made in the late February sun.”

"Donnie Fritts only had two conditions that had to be met before he agreed to perform a series of shows in Japan.

Because of his health, he needed a break between shows and he insisted he be joined by the The Decoys, the local rhythm-and-blues band that frequently serves as his backup band.

A Japanese concert promoter Fritts has known for more than 35 years agreed, and now Fritts and The Decoys will be taking Muscle Shoals R&B and funk to audiences in five Japanese cities beginning Saturday.

'I called him and told him what I had in mind,' Fritts said. 'I'd love to do some shows in Japan, but I had to bring The Decoys. I don't want to play with anyone else. I know these guys, we play well together and they know my songs.'"

Welcome, newbies! Glad to have you on the DBT 'band'wagon....

"I went to the 'Hardly Strictly' Bluegrass festival last week in Golden Gate Park and saw the last part of DBT's set. Wow! I was totally blown away by the band and how good they were - I'm sorry I didn't see the whole set. The 'Bulldozer and dirt' song was great -everybody in my section of the audience was singing along. This music did seem like the *heaviest* I heard at this festival. Did I mention that this is was my first time seeing the DBTs? I'm now hooked..."

dbts : Message: Re: Wow.:
"I introduced my buddy, Jeff, a kid who just graduated from the University of Toledo, to DBT, The Drams, and Slobberbone. He now lives in Cleveland.
Just thought you'd like to hear his first impressions:
_____________

Show was AMAZING. How amazing you ask? So amazing I am gettin outta work early Friday so I can make the 4 hour drive to Detroit and see it again.

After listening to the album I thought the Drams would be a lil more pop and soft rather than the punk sound of Slobberbone but they came out and rocked balls. "
....as the band continuously reminds us long-timers why we love them so:

dbts : Message: Why there's none better than DBTS:
"Back in 1974 I bought an album called Ooh La La by The Faces. The Faces were a group of funny-looking misfit drunkards. A Faces song was basically this: everybody play whatever you feel like playing and Rod Stewart will sing his tits off and we'll hope it works. Ooh La La was the last record The Faces recorded in the studio. The critics hated it. Rod Stewart called it garbage. The rest of the Faces claimed Rod was keeping all his good stuff for his (fantastic!!) solo albums he was recording while a member of the Faces. I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT. Nobody else I knew ever bought it or liked it when I played it for them. A year or so after the album came out the Faces came through town with a little-known dude named Peter Frampton as the opening act. The show was amazing (even though the great Ronnie Lane had left the band and was replaced by the skinniest Japanese guy you've ever seen) but the band basically ignored the Ooh La La album for earlier stuff, a couple of Rod's solo songs and some great covers-Jumping Jack Flash!!!! Now its thirty years later and I'm an old funny-looking drunkard who still loves his rock and roll. I take the two and a half hour ride to Cleveland to see The Drive-By Truckers, a bunch of drunk kids that I just can't seem to convince anyone are the greatest band out there today. Right in the middle of the show at thew House Of Blues the youngest member of the band announces that Ian MacLagan is playing across town and he's sorry he couldn't get over to see the show but he was gonna do one of his songs. Ian MacLagan was The Faces keyboard player and the song the band played was Glad And Sorry from the Ooh La La album. When Jason sang the opening line- Thank You Kindly For Thinking Of Me- I felt like I was alone in the room with the band and they were playing to just me. A truly Transcendental moment; a great gift to an old rocker that sometimes forgets to enjoy the beauty of the little things. Thank you Jason. Thank you Patterson. Thank you Mike Thank you Shonna. Thank you Brad. You guys are great rock and rollers and are truly touching the lives of the people who have been lucky enough to find your music. Ronny Metallo"

For S.F. rockers, Tower Records was where it was all happening -- now the party's over:
"Record promotion men Jeff Trager and Bill Perasso used to sit around drinking with pal Russ Solomon at their favorite hangout, the cocktail lounge at Villa Roma at the busy intersection of Columbus and Bay streets. Solomon, who owned record stores in Sacramento, would point to the supermarket across the street. 'One day I'm going to open a store there,' he told them."

DBT WIR - Shut up and Get on the Plane

First, I've changed the site for the weekend to honor the kick off of the DBT/Drams tour. Two mighty fine bands putting on what will be the best rock show in the states for the next couple of weeks.

Columbus, OH - Tonight
Cleveland, OH - Tomorrow
Pittsburgh, PA - Sunday....

You lucky bastards! Get out and support these fellas and lady (speaking of the lady she got several 'ohs' and 'ahs' at the Hardly Strictly show last weekend. Lookin' fine, Shonna!) buy some merch. Give them much love!

On with the DBT WIR - Shut up and Get on the Plane.....

Seriously, now, shut your mouth and get your ass on the plane. Take some Zoloft if you need too... We'll maybe don't, but all that family's problems did disappear over night.

We had a mighty fine weekend in the Bay Area last week. Chock full of visual and auditory candy. The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival was held in Golden Gate park and DBT played it for the first time ever on Sunday.

On Friday I dodged out of work early to check out the kick off of the Festival. Elvis Costello with the Hammer of the Honkey-Tonk Gods got things started. Here's a couple of photos of about 50k folks who ditched work early, too.

It was also Fleet Week in the City-by-the-Bay and Saturday evening I had the honor of buying a drink for a Navy soldier who was taking leave from the U.S.S. Nimitz. Those aircraft carriers are freakin' HUGE!

Earlier that Saturday we caught an awesome airshow by the Blue Angels from the roof top of a fellow Alabamian's apartment building in the Marina District. Believe it or not, that little lady on the far right of the below picture was Miss Lauderdale County H.S. 1996. Know where LCHS is located? Rogersville, Alabama. She didn't have "a case a Sterling Bigmouths", but she did have 2 six packs of Stella Artois which were mighty tasty. Oh, and the "half ounce of weed".... well...... :-)

Be sure to click on the pictures in order to see the jets really well. I didn't reduce the size of the pictures so they blow up pretty good.

From the roof top with Pacific Heights in the background.

A lot of fun to watch those crazy cats. Now, on to DBT at the Hardly Strictly:

Strictly a good time: Annual free Golden Gate Park bluegrass festival gets better -- and bigger -- with age.:
"With most of the festival's biggest names reserved for Sunday, and Saturday's bill more concentrated on traditional acoustic music, the crowds for the first day of the weekend have always been substantially smaller. But the audience Saturday topped the previous year's attendance by at least half. Police estimated that as many as 500,000 people could have attended the three-day event."
500,000 people... and a snake. That snake came from one of the planes. It was a 'Snake on a Plane'. The hype on that one died pretty quickly, aye?

Best part is that he's drinking a King Cobra. Nice!

And what would a concert in Golden Gate park be without a spinning hippie. Hey, look! A Spinning hippie.

Know what song she was spinning to? Lookout Mountain. No shit. Actually she spun and hippie grooved to all the songs, but it as funny as hell to have a hippie spinning in front of you while the heavy metal sounds of Lookout Mountain are permeating the park.

This was the largest crowd I've ever seen DBT play too. I guesstimated around 7K. Here's a look from the front of the stage to as far as I could see going back. (Hey, I was hung over as piss that day and I found a spot in the shade and stayed there. No photo journalist was I.)

Here is a shot of the stage and some rocking out pictures:

The COOLEST part of the show was the Blue Angels flying over while DBT played. DBT damn near was the only thing in SF that weekend that was louder the Blue Angels. Click to see the jet above the stage.

Here they are in formation over the stage:

Here's Patterson preaching and the band Rocking:

The crowd loved them. They gained a ton of new fans that day and I had a shit load of people from the Bay Area find this site by searching for DBT this last week. The guy in front of me during the show turned around and said that he had never heard of the band until he looked them up online the morning before the show. He was seriously impressed. He asked me how many albums they had put out and I said 7. He asked which one should he get and I said all of 'em.

A band called Freakwater played before DBT, and, I apologize if there are any fans of this group reading this, they were a snooze and a half. Reminded me of the country music I hated growing up. DBT was a "Day" to Freakwater's "Night". Shifting from Dec Day to Lookout blew people away. Buttholeville brought the park down as the final song. The stage MC said something to the effect of "That's how you DO it" when DBT was finished. It was an awesome weekend.

Jeff Wall gets the honor of the funniest post on the DBT Yahoo Group this week. Jeff, you're not cocaine rich are you?

dbts : Message: Time to put a band together:
"It's time to get off of my ass and put a band together. I'm thinkingsomething small, something fun, something kind of like my dick. Something on the lines of Traditional Country/ Acoustic Southern Rock/Bluegrass/ Some Classic Rock. For those of y'all that don't know me, I am a big, shaggy, irreverent, extremely profane, exceptionally good looking (in a shaved down Sasquatch kind of way) Kernersville based, well hung (I was lying earlier, really I was), 45 year old studmuffin who plays acoustic guitar.

I'd really like to hear some thoughts from you folks in the comments on the following article. One person was waving a small Confederate flag during the DBT show.

Red flag - NASCAR - Yahoo! Sports:
"'Why are you doing this to us?' demanded one public relations woman. 'This is not a story,' shouted another, even after I pointed out that the flags are still flying. 'Absolutely no way, no how,' said another.

Email responses were often bitter. Face-to-face encounters often worse. Interview and statement requests were summarily denied. At some drivers' scheduled weekly press conferences, I was told that any question involving the flag would end the session."

What the fuck is wrong with christians?

Angry Christians force Slayer album out of India:
"MUMBAI (Reuters) - U.S. heavy metal band Slayer's latest album has been recalled from music stores across India after the country's small Christian community said the cover depicting Christ with amputated arms and a missing eye was insulting."
That's all for this week, folks. Go out and support DBT and the Drams.

Cal v. Oregon.... (PAC 10 football sucks, I know, but still...)
Fleet Week which means the Blue Angels.... (not sucking at all)

.... and the Red Bull Air Race (also not sucking)

Hurtling through the air with an acrobatic pilot:
"Kirby Chambliss thinks all commercial pilots should receive acrobatic training, just in case their jetliner happens to flip mid-flight."

But the BEST of the BEST will be the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival 2006. A free multi-concert in the Golden Gate park paid for by some rich fucker. Basically, a gift to the city.

That's right, them Drive-by Truckers are flying out for a quick show. I'll take what I can get and be proud that I get to see for a bit. Here's the stage they'll be playing on:

It is gonna be some fun, let me tell you. Can't wait to see the band. Hopefully, the Blue Angels will fly over the park then DBT will launch into Lookout Mountain. Ohhhh, baby....

Here's Musickfest article that Jenn posted on the Yahoo board. Musickfest started last night and I do believe some ribs were involved. Damn Athens folks have all the fun and the best benefits in the world. Good on 'em.

Check out the art that was auctioned. Some pretty bad-a paintings including some serious awesomeness from Mr. Freed. I asked Jenn if she was going to buy me the $800 pictures. She said the $1500 was more my speed. One of these days I'm gonna own a Wes Freed piece.

Eric Clapton Rethinks Playing 'Cocaine':
"ST. PAUL, MINN. — Eric Clapton is playing 'Cocaine' in concert again. The recovering drug addict and alcoholic, who founded the Crossroads Centre addiction recovery center on the Caribbean island of Antigua, stopped performing the song written by J.J. Cale when he first got sober."
Why? Because!

Singer sets undersea concert record:
OSLO, Norway - Singer Katie Melua set a world deep-water record by performing a concert 994 feet under the North Sea in the leg of an oil platform, the rig's operator said Tuesday.

The Georgian-Irish artist and her band performed two, hour-long concerts Monday at the bottom of a hollow concrete leg that helps support the Troll A offshore platform, the Norwegian oil company Statoil ASA said.

'This was definitely the most surreal gig I've ever done,' said Melua, 22, whose albums have sold more than five million copies worldwide."
