What Atrios says....

Eschaton:
"A New Luxury

One nice thing about having large majorities in the House and Senate is that finally I will feel perfectly comfortable rooting for members of the wanker caucus to lose their seats. In 2010 voters will chuck out incumbents if the economy sucks and they don't perceive they've been given what they were promised (health care). The 'center' on health care involves giving people affordable quality health care, it does not involve preserving the obscene profits of the corrupt health insurance industry. If Democrats screw this up, those in Republican-leaning districts will lose their seats and I'll be cheering on every bad Democrat loss"

I'm very much down with this 'podunk' town. Though, shouldn't you create the renewable energy before you create the renewable energy museum.

Hell, close enough. Give 'em the cash!

Why a Tiny Alabama Town Wants a $375 Million Chunk of the Stimulus:

"There's certainly no denying that Edwardsville has big ambitions. Through the various proposals, which include a renewable energy museum, scenic railroad, and vineyards, these small Alabama communities envision themselves becoming a cutting-edge demonstration project for energy sustainability and a hub for tourism.

'I know we look like some little Podunk town, and by the census, we are,' Phillips says. 'But we really think we've done some amazingly progressive things in the past two years.'"

RAND STUDY: War on Terrorism fundamentally flawed and doomed to fail:
"Today's Washington Post covers what amounts to a near complete repudiation of the Bush administration 'terrorism' policy since 9/11. The fact that the study is coming from the RAND Corporation (SourceWatch profile) is huge. RAND, while technically non-partisan, has a long history shaping a hawkish US strategic policy. (To get a flavor of just what type of organization RAND is, Donald Rumsfeld has sat on their Board of Trustees.)"

The Bush administration's terrorism-fighting strategy has not significantly undermined al-Qaeda's capabilities, according to a major new study that argues the struggle against terrorism is better waged by law enforcement agencies than by armies.

The study by the nonpartisan Rand Corp. also contends that the administration committed a fundamental error in portraying the conflict with al-Qaeda as a "war on terrorism." The phrase falsely suggests that there can be a battlefield solution to terrorism, and symbolically conveys warrior status on terrorists, it said.

"Terrorists should be perceived and described as criminals, not holy warriors," authors Seth Jones and Martin Libicki write in "How Terrorist Groups End: Lessons for Countering al-Qaeda," a 200-page volume released yesterday.

......

In Muslim countries in particular, there should be a "light U.S. military footprint or none at all," the report contends.

How a candidate runs their campaign is how they will run the country.

Hillary's Campaign Refused to Cancel My Contribution Plan:

"In a recent article on the Politico, Cash-strapped Clinton fails to pay bills, it was reported that Hillary's campaign isn't even paying its own bills. In an interesting irony, as of February 29, her campaign owed $200,000 to a health insurance provider, which had not been paid in three months. As soon as the media found out about it, her campaign decided to pay it off."

That Man I Shot

Please help a member of Congress whose doing the right thing. Sign Rep Wexler's Impeachment petition.

Join Wexler's Call for Cheney Hearings

Because.....

Playing war has great consequences.

That Man I Shot:

"The New York Times found 121 cases in which veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan committed a killing in this country, or were charged with one, after their return from war. In many of those cases, combat trauma and the stress of deployment — along with alcohol abuse, family discord and other attendant problems — appear to have set the stage for a tragedy that was part destruction, part self-destruction.

Three-quarters of these veterans were still in the military at the time of the killing. More than half the killings involved guns, and the rest were stabbings, beatings, strangulations and bathtub drownings. Twenty-five offenders faced murder, manslaughter or homicide charges for fatal car crashes resulting from drunken, reckless or suicidal driving."
_______

'Bomb Auschwitz to stop the killing'. Kinda pregnant.

Bush: US should have bombed Auschwitz:

Consumer group rips insurance industry

"WASHINGTON - U.S. insurance companies systematically overcharge customers and underpay home and auto claims to pad their already-fat bottom lines, a consumer group said Thursday.

The Consumer Federation of America's insurance director, J. Robert Hunter, said insurance companies have enjoyed robust profits and contained losses largely by 'methodically overcharging consumers, cutting back on coverage, underpaying claims and getting taxpayers to pick up some of the tab for risks the insurers should cover."

Bush crony bites the barby.

Howard's reign in Australia is over

SYDNEY, Australia - Labor Party leader Kevin Rudd swept to power in Australian elections Saturday, ending an 11-year conservative era and promising major changes to policies on global warming and his country's role in the Iraq war.

The change in government from Howard's center-right Liberal-National Party coalition to the center-left Labor Party also marks a generational shift for Australia.

Rudd, a 50-year-old former diplomat who speaks fluent Chinese, urged voters to support him because Howard was out of touch with modern Australia and ill-equipped to deal with new-age issues such as climate change.

Gear Shiftin' Love

*Sigh*. Another reason why I'll never move home.

"Damn, baby, looks like we gonna hafta keep on using the gear shifter".

Next up, Alabama bans cucumbers.

Court Leaves Ala. Sex Toy Ban Intact:

"MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court declined Monday to hear a challenge to Alabama's ban on the sale of sex toys, ending a nine-year legal battle and sending a warning to store owners to clean off their shelves. An adult-store owner had asked the justices to throw out the law as an unconstitutional intrusion into the privacy of the bedroom. But the Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal, leaving intact a lower court ruling that upheld the law. Sherri Williams, owner of Pleasures stores in Huntsville and Decatur, said she was disappointed, but plans to sue again on First Amendment free speech grounds. 'My motto has been they are going to have to pry this vibrator from my cold, dead hand. I refuse to give up,' she said."

Not that McCain matters anymore... and in a stark departure from the man that ran against Bush in 99/00... this type of pandering to the evil effing base of the Republican party.... so, so sad.

Groups criticize McCain for calling U.S. 'Christian nation':

"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Muslim and Jewish groups on Monday sharply criticized Sen. John McCain's comments that he would prefer a Christian president to lead the United States. art.mccain.nh.ap.jpg GOP presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain campaigns Sunday in Derry, New Hampshire. The Arizona Republican's remarks came in an interview with Beliefnet, a Web site that covers religious issues and affairs. 'I just have to say in all candor that since this nation was founded primarily on Christian principles, personally, I prefer someone who has a grounding in my faith,' the GOP presidential hopeful told the Web site in an interview published Saturday."
This 'christian nation' BS is just that... a load of BS:

Founding Fathers - Religious quotes:

"James Madison, principal author of the constitution:

'The civil Government, though bereft of everything like an associated hierarchy, possesses the requisite stability, and performs its functions with complete success, whilst the number, the industry, and the morality of the priesthood, and the devotion of the people, have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the church from the State.' (1819)."

"'I am tolerant of all creeds. Yet if any sect suffered itself to be used for political objects I would meet it by political opposition. In my view church and state should be separate, not only in form, but fact. Religion and politics should not be mingled.' (Millard Fillmore)

'When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read: 'All men are created equal except negroes, foreigners and Catholics.' When it comes to this I should prefer immigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty--to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.' (Abraham Lincoln)

'Encourage free schools, and resolve that not one dollar of money shall be appropriated to the support of any sectarian school. Resolve that neither the state nor nation, or both combined, shall support institutions of learning other than those sufficient to afford every child growing up in the land the opportunity of a good common school education, unmixed with sectarian, pagan, or atheistical tenets. Leave the matter of religion to the family altar, the church, and the private schools, supported entirely by private contributions. Keep the church and state forever separated.' (Ulysses S. Grant)"
... and on and on and on...

What the hell is wrong with these people.

Victoria needs to spend a little time with a gear shifter or a cucumber.

No hugs allowed at Ill. middle school:

"OAK PARK, Ill. - If you need a hug, you won't get it at Percy Julian Middle School. Principal Victoria Sharts banned hugging among the suburban Chicago school's 860 students anywhere inside the building. She said students were forming 'hug lines' that made them late for classes and crowded the hallways. ADVERTISEMENT Cheap on gas Better for the environment Stylish 'Hugging is really more appropriate for airports or for family reunions than passing and seeing each other every few minutes in the halls,' Sharts said. Another reason to institute the no-hugging policy was that some hugs could be too long and too close, she said."

2 Years of Ass Whuppin

Two years to the day I started this blog with the following:

Alabama Ass Whuppin': August 2005:
"First Post This will be all things political, ridiculous, Drive-by Truckerish, Crimson Tide footballable, and whatever the hell else I decide to do with it."

A year later I posted this:

Alabama Ass Whuppin': 12 Months of Ass Whuppin':
"It all started with a trip to Palau. From there it became a forum for me to discuss politics, religion, music and most importantly The Drive-by Truckers. And for someone with a short attention span it has been an almost daily committment and ,well, I'm kinda proud of that."

Thanks to everyone who has visited (almost 18,000 unique individuals since November, 2005).

Another year has past and I'm still here and a lot more of y'all have stopped by (an additional 43,000 unique visitors since this time last year). I appreciate all y'all and the comments, emails and mailbox goodies y'all send.

I continue to meet some incredibly cool folks because of AAW and that makes every moment I work on this blog worth it.

The past year has been a great one in which I've gotten to do some very cool things in relation to this blog.

I got to go to Cooley's surprise birthday party where I met The Drams for the first time:

Alabama Ass Whuppin': DBT Week in Review - 9/15:

"43 hours of consciousness that included 4 4 hours of airplane stasis (doesn't count as sleep) and 13 hours of Rock and Roll fantasy camp was the result of a whirlwind trip to Birmingham, Al last Saturday night for Mike Cooley's surprise birthday party."

Drive Like Hell

My good damn friend and world traveler David Shipper contributed a couple of stellar posts:

Alabama Ass Whuppin': Boat Loads in Palau

Alabama Ass Whuppin': I'm Turning Japanese.....

I followed Stephen Colbert as he did a couple of segments from Colbert County, Al:

Alabama Ass Whuppin': Colbert County Values

Alabama Ass Whuppin': The Perfect Holiday Gift:

"Night 2 of the Colbert Report in Colbert County aired last night. They've done a great job with the skit. You know how skittish we Southerners are about being made fun of. C.R. has struck a perfect balance so far and the community in Tuscumbia has really let their sense of humor shine."

I participated in our Democracy on a daily basis and watch some sanity return to our government.

I also learned that a lot of work is still to be done...

Alabama Ass Whuppin': The Terrorist Have Won - Woo-Hoo!:

"Three cheers for the Terrorist! Way to get out there and vote my fellow Terrorist. Let's kick open those borders and legalize gay abortions! Woo-hoo!!! Party time!!!! Stephen Colbert, when he bitterly called the House for the Dems last night, said 'We should just give the country back the goddamn Indians'. And then this jewel, 'We were this close (thumb and forefinger held inches apart) to Jesus coming back'. It really has to be a rough day for the kool aide drinking Republicans. Let's take a look at some of the responses on a popular conservative posting board:"

Finally, I lost my granddad, a man I miss sorely

Alabama Ass Whuppin': Billy Neal Haddock - 1924-2007

These are just a hand full of the events I documented on this blog.

Keep on coming back because there could be some interesting changes occurring in the near future.

You never know what another year might bring.

Cheers to all y'all that come by. I really do appreciate every single one of you.

E-Titty

Thank Zeus we still have journalist like Bill Moyer.

Bill Moyers: 'Greed and God won four elections in a row' for Rove

What struck me about my fellow Texan, Karl Rove, is that he knew how to win elections as if they were divine interventions. You may think God summoned Billy Graham to Florida on the eve of the 2000 election to endorse George W. Bush just in the nick of time, but if it did happen that way, the good lord was speaking in a Texas accent.

Karl Rove figured out a long time ago that the way to take an intellectually incurious draft-averse naughty playboy in a flight jacket with chewing tobacco in his back pocket and make him governor of Texas, was to sell him as God’s anointed in a state where preachers and televangelists outnumber even oil derricks and jack rabbits. Using church pews as precincts Rove turned religion into a weapon of political combat -- a battering ram, aimed at the devil’s minions, especially at gay people.

It’s so easy, as Karl knew, to scapegoat people you outnumber, and if God is love, as rumor has it, Rove knew that, in politics, you better bet on fear and loathing. Never mind that in stroking the basest bigotry of true believers you coarsen both politics and religion.

Appalling. This is supporting the troops?!?

Short of Purple Hearts, Navy tells vet to buy own:

"PEARLAND — Korean War veteran Nyles Reed, 75, opened an envelope last week to learn a Purple Heart had been approved for injuries he sustained as a Marine on June 22, 1952. But there was no medal. Just a certificate and a form stating that the medal was 'out of stock.' 'I can imagine, of course, with what's going on in Iraq and Afghanistan, there's a big shortage,' Reed said. 'At least, I would imagine so.' The form letter from the Navy Personnel Command told Reed he could wait 90 days and resubmit an application, or buy his own medal. After waiting 55 years, however, Reed decided to pay $42 for his own Purple Heart and accompanying ribbon — plus state sales taxes — at a military surplus store."
_______

Terrifying. This is the United States of America?!?

Homeland Security Enlists Clergy to Quell Public Unrest if Martial Law Ever Declared:

"Could martial law ever become a reality in America? Some fear any nuclear, biological or chemical attack on U.S. soil might trigger just that. KSLA News 12 has discovered that the clergy would help the government with potentially their biggest problem: Us. Charleton Heston's now-famous speech before the National Rifle Association at a convention back in 2000 will forever be remembered as a stirring moment for all 2nd Amendment advocates. At the end of his remarks, Heston held up his antique rifle and told the crowd in his Moses-like voice, 'over my cold, dead hands.'"

Woman has rare identical quadruplets:

"HELENA, Mont. - A 35-year-old Canadian woman has given birth to rare identical quadruplets, officials at a Great Falls hospital said Thursday.

Karen Jepp of Calgary, Alberta, delivered Autumn, Brooke, Calissa and Dahlia by Caesarian section Sunday afternoon at Benefis Healthcare, said Amy Astin, the hospital's director of community and government relations. The four girls were breathing without ventilators and listed in good condition Thursday, she said. 'These babies are doing grand,' said Dr. Tom Key of Great Falls, the perinatologist who delivered the girls."
_______

Dammit! Why didn't I come up with this.

People of the Web - Hooter Heaven:

"Jason Grunstra's 'eureka' moment did not occur while sitting under an apple tree like Newton — nor while flying a kite in the rain, like Franklin. Then again, Grunstra wasn't busy discovering the law of gravity or the conductivity of electricity.

Grunstra's 'discovery' was this: Americans are obsessed with breasts. Ashley, a.k.a. Minxie, trades photos for donations to her next implant procedure. Appropriately enough, his eureka moment came in Las Vegas, at a bachelor party, in the company of strippers. One of the strippers had recently gotten breast implants. Another was sad because she could not afford them. So Grunstra did what any gentlemen would do — he started raising cash for the flat-chested one. 'I said, 'I've got five on it!'' he recalls. 'And everybody else said, 'I've got five on it, too.' By the end of the night we had $70 bucks.' That's a long way from the cost of a breast implant operation, which can run $4,000 and up. But for Grunstra, this was more than just crumpled dollar bills stuffed in a thong. This was a big idea."

Mississippi Monkey

Man, this September 'surge' report is becoming the most ludicrous display of marketing spin containing no factual data pony show evah.

Patsy... I mean Patraeus is already stating that he will recommend some troops being pulled out. First, if you believe that then your part of the 25%'ers and any troops leaving 'before we've achieved victory (whatever the fuck that is) probably pisses you off. But yer not pissed off because you saw the 'wink-wink'. Smoke and mirrors.... and not the sexy kind.

Bush has already jacked up the troops levels this year so he could pull a few back come September to 'fool' folks. If you get fooled by this then you are a fool.

Fool me once......

Democrats, quit sucking your thumb and pull the plug on this meat grinder. I look forward to voting out the fake Democrats as much as I look forward to tossing Republicans

White House is writing General Petraeus' September progress report on "the surge" in Iraq:

"Incredible. Absolutely incredible. These people have no shame. The 'big' report coming this September, the one Bush has been telling us we should wait for before making any decisions about what to do next in Iraq. Well, the White House is writing the frigging report. From today's Los Angeles Times:.....

And special brownie points to the LA Times for burying this huge revelation at the end of the story where no one would see it."

From what you've sown....

Suicide rate in Army at a 26-year high:

"WASHINGTON - Ninety-nine U.S. soldiers killed themselves last year, the highest rate of suicide in the Army in 26 years, a new report says."

No fucking shit, Obama. And the rest of the Dem candidates need to realize that Bush ain't running again. Fuck using Bush. It's the entire Republican party. Ignore Bush on the campaign trail. Hammer Republican ideology.

I am digging what Obama is saying below. I want my government more open than a 7/11.

Obama says Bush not solely to blame:

"To make the government more accountable, Obama said he would post all non-emergency bills online for five days before he signed them into law, allowing Americans a chance to weigh in on the legislation. In addition, he said he would post all meetings between lobbyists and government agencies online. Didn't realize Rove was going into comedy after he resigns.

What-the-fuck-ever, Rove. Yeah, Bush is one of the best-read people you've ever met?!?

What kind of losers do you hang out with?

Rove: Bush’s critics are ’snobs’ who hate his ‘common sense.’:

"In his interview with Rush Limbaugh this afternoon, Karl Rove claimed that the people criticizing Bush are “sort of elite, effete snobs who can’t hold a candle to this guy. What they don’t like about him is that he is common sense, that he is Middle America.” Limbaugh suggest that Bush critics are frustrated the the President “outsmarts ‘em.” Rove argued Bush is far more intelligent than people give him credit for, and is “one of the best-read people I’ve ever met” whose “passion is history.” Listen to a portion of the interview:"

Daily Kos: Right-wing terrorists threaten bombing in Alabama:

"If al Qaeda threatened to blow up a building anywhere in the United States how long do you suppose it would take before Michael Chertoff and George Bush and Dick Cheney were screaming at the top of their lungs on TV about it? Probably less time than it takes the Pentagon to spend $1 million in Iraq. But apparently home-grown racist extremists can threaten to blow up a buildingwith nary a peep from our valiant leaders in the War on Terror.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Southern Poverty Law Center, which filed suit against the nation's second-largest Ku Klux Klan group, has increased security following threats from white supremacists to blow up its building. The Montgomery-based center filed suit July 25 against the Imperial Klans of America in Kentucky's Meade County Circuit Court over the beating of a 16-year-old boy of Panamanian descent. 'The latest case against the IKA promises to be as dangerous as anything we've faced,' SPLC co-founder Morris Dees stated in an e-mail Monday. 'We won't back down from these threats, but we'll have to increase our security to ensure the safety of our staff.'"

I have deep empathy for the extremely bored.... *yawn*.

Empathy can spark contagious yawning: study:

"LONDON (Reuters) - Showing empathy can make for a lot of yawning. ADVERTISEMENT A study of autistic children has bolstered evidence that people who identify better with others are more prone to contagious yawning, Japanese researchers say. Scientists have long known that one yawn often leads others to follow suit but what triggers the phenomenon is not as clear, said Atsushi Senju, a researcher at the University of London who worked on the study. Some believe it is simply a reflex. Others suggest the same mechanisms in the brain that make people feel empathy also cause them to yawn when they see others doing the same, he said."

Mom Sentenced for Posing As Son's Wife:

"A woman was sentenced to 30 days in jail for claiming in court that she was her son's wife. Christopher Crowe, 25, was in court recently to plead guilty to four felony counts including residential entry and domestic battery. During the hearing, the judge asked if Crowe's wife agreed with the plea deal. Crowe's mother, 47-year-old Rebecca Crowe, stood up, said she was Crowe's wife and said the plea agreement was OK. Later, Vanderburgh County Deputy Prosecutor Anna Clutter discovered Rebecca Crowe's identity when she saw a picture of Christopher Crowe's wife, a much younger woman. Courtroom personnel later admitted they thought the woman looked too old."

After deliberating for only 45 minutes, a Broward County panel found Terry Lee Alexander, 20, guilty of indecent exposure for an episode last November. According to investigators, a female guard--who was monitoring Alexander's cell from a jail control room--spotted Alexander pleasuring himself while seated on his bunk. At the time, he was jailed on auto theft and gun raps (Alexander subsequently pleaded guilty to the felony raps and was sentenced to ten years in prison). Alexander, pictured in the below mug shot, was sentenced to 60 days in custody for today's indecent exposure conviction, though the time will be served concurrently with his lengthier sentence. I'm back, y'all!

I'm sitting here in my office *sigh*.... staring at a bunch of work emails that I could give one craptacular crap about.... and my one new penny shiny glimmer of goodness is that I'm back to full time blogging. I've missed it and everyday that I haven't blogged I've felt like I forgot to put on deodorant on that day.

I'm back, but as with all exertions, I'll want to make sure I'm properly warmed up.... do my stretches.... not get too many head and neck vein erections over the political insanity that's occurred over the last 2 weeks (*cough* SCOOTER *cough* lying-sacks-of-shit Republicans *cough* pussy ass Democrats not doing enough to stop this occupation *cough* that last cough was a real one... got a little phlegm going this morning.....)

Again, thanks for all the comments and emails regarding my Granddad's passing. He was a swell human being who taught me a lot.

I'll have a few back home pictures up later this week.

I'll skirt the long commentary today in favor of curt, snarky one-liners.

On to the show.

Support the troops my ass:

Republicans Kill Webb's Troop-Protection Amendment:

"We didn't need any further proof that Congressional Republicans really don't give a damn about the troops or their families but we just got it in the United States Senate anyway.

Just moments ago, Senate Republicans succeeded in a filibuster in which they refused to end debate on Virginia Democrat Jim Webb's S. 2012, which would have placed strict limits on National Guard and reserve deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as well as mandating more downtime at home before active-duty combat troops are returned to battle.

The vote was 56-41 to end debate, with 60 votes needed to move to a full, up-or-down vote on the Webb measure. Once again, the GOP has been successful at destroying another Democratic attempt at helping service members and their families caught in the buzzsaw of the Bush administration's lies and incompetence."

President Douche bag makes little girls cry by being a.... big ass douche bag.

"A question for President Bush on immigration rose up like a ghost from the grave this afternoon in Ohio.

Only the questioner was a 13-year old blonde-headed girl, Jessica Hackerd, from Brecksville, Ohio, who immediately broke into tears after making her inquiry.

'Mr. President, I know immigration has been a big problem in the U.S. And what is your next step with the immigration bill?' Jessica asked Mr. Bush, during a question and answer period after a speech Mr. Bush gave to a Cleveland business group.

Mr. Bush's sarcastic reply -- a wry 'yeah, thanks' -- drew laughter from the crowd of 400. But the attention caused young Jessica, who characterized herself in an interview afterward as very shy, to immediately tear up.

Some folks may get a little antsy when I'm on a christian bashing roll, but, jeez, come on, these theocrats are dangerous. If you proclaim to be a christian but you don't agree with all of the hate a rather large segment of your religion supports and you're not out there daily trying to remedy what's broke with your religion, well, then, you're just as large a part of the problem.

Christian Right Activists Disrupt Hindu Chaplain In The Senate:

"Today was a historic first for religion in America's civic life: For the very first time, a Hindu delivered the morning invocation in the Senate chamber — only to find the ceremony disrupted by three Christian right activists.

We have video of the astonishing scene, and we'll be sharing it with you shortly.

The three protesters, who all belong to the Christian Right anti-abortion group Operation Save America, and who apparently traveled to Washington all the way from North Carolina, interrupted by loudly asking for God's forgiveness for allowing the false prayer of a Hindu in the Senate chamber.

'Lord Jesus, forgive us father for allowing a prayer of the wicked, which is an abomination in your sight,' the first protester began."

This entire post on C&L is a good one, but the historical quotes defining patriotism vs. nationalism are especially poignant.

Crooks and Liars - Responsibilities

The difference between patriotism and nationalism is that the patriot is proud of his country for what it does, and the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does; the first attitude creates a feeling of responsibility, but the second a feeling of blind arrogance that leads to war. — Sidney J. Harris

Patriotism is a lively sense of collective responsibility. Nationalism is a silly cock crowing on its own dunghill and calling for larger spurs and brighter beaks. I fear that nationalism is one of England’s many spurious gifts to the world. — Richard Aldington

“Responsibility” seems to be a common theme:

What do we mean by patriotism in the context of our times? I venture to suggest that what we mean is a sense of national responsibility … a patriotism which is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime. — Adlai Stevenson

DBT Week in Review - 6/15/07

Today's DBT WIR is going to be a bit different. Instead of the usual DBT/Jason/Drams/Music News I'm going to throw together a hodge-podge of different music and music related articles. A stew of music news, if you will... and you will.

One DBT note: The boys and lady are in the studio recording up some mighty fine goodness. Word has it that things are going great. Oh boy, I can't wait for this album.

Wheeler at Alablawg is closing shop and has written some parting posts. The saddest came recently with this disclosure.

Goodbye Part III, Stuff I Never Got To Do - The Alablawg:

"Alabama things I always wanted to do, but never got around to doing.

See DBT. They’re in town every year right after Thanksgiving. We’re always in town, too, but I’ve never made the show. Mostly because we always have turkey day at our house, which means out of town guests with whom I want to spend time. Hence, no show."

I've admitted to a few man crushes on this blog. Apparently the term has entered the national lexicon.

Summer sizzles for Man Crushes -- and there's nothing wrong with that

We're talking, of course, about a Man Crush -- the completely non-sexual feelings that develop when one heterosexual male finds another dude to be so cool that Guy No. 1 wants to spend as much time as possible with Guy No. 2. Aristotle had a Man Crush on Plato. Richie Cunningham had a Man Crush on the Fonz. And for the entire month of April and part of May, everyone in the Bay Area with a Y chromosome had a Man Crush on Golden State Warriors star Baron Davis.

The Man Crush has always been a delicate subject among straight men, with a very complicated rule set. It's considered OK to spontaneously proclaim your love for an NFL quarterback when he just scored a touchdown. It's not cool to point out that Bob from human resources always looks nice in that blue sweater. It's socially acceptable to have a poster of a shirtless and sweaty James Hetfield from Metallica on your wall, but never a half-naked or even fully clothed picture of Orlando Bloom.

But we're at a crucial point in Man Crush history, where a perfect storm of events could make it possible for even the most insecure guy to proclaim his undying like for his fellow man.

Al Gore is a badass:

Antarctica Cements Act for Gore’s Live Earth:

In an effort to fulfill his promise of a concert on every continent for his “Live Earth” event on July 7 to 8, Al Gore approached the British Antarctic Survey in February to explore the possibility of flying a band in to its Courtesy British Antarctic Survey Rothera Research Station in Antarctica.

No, he was told, July is mid-winter in Antarctica, and no planes or boats can get in or out.

But all was not lost. BAS officials told Gore that a band was already in place on the South Pole. BAS press representative Linda Capper told blogger Tim Slagle, “We have a house band — five of our science team. They are very good indie rock-folk fusion. The remaining 17 will be the audience on location.”

They’ve never played in front of an audience. To make matters worse, the band, named after a Greenlandic word for “summit,” will be playing outside on the ice, where temperatures could be as low as minus ten degrees Celsius. One of their colleagues will film the performance for broadcast on TV and the Internet"

This Post is Gay

That's right folks. This post is gay and there ain't not curing it.

Homer: We're here, we're queer, we don't want anymore bears.

Lenny: Hey, that's a pretty catchy chant. Where did you hear it?

Homer: Oh, I heard it at the mustache parade they have every year.

Yes, the funny mustache parade. Or, might Homer have heard it from his local Mega-Church? They are there.... and they are queer.....

And so is Mr. Haggard, no matter what his twisted, fucked up belief in a higher being says. Sorry but you can't pray the gay away, Rev. "Oh, I only sucked dick when I was taking drugs". Rev, I've taken drugs before and in no way did it make me want to play for the other team.

Haggard says he's not gay:
"The Rev. Ted Haggard emerged from three weeks of intensive counseling convinced he is 'completely heterosexual' and told an oversight board that his sexual contact with men was limited to his accuser."

Atleast he's doomed to a fuckin-A miserable rest of his life living as someone he really isn't. I should have more compassion, I know, but... fuck him.

The wackos on the Religious Right stomped their feet and cried like babies over Janet Jackson's teat..... So the NFL gets Prince to do the half-time show.... And what do they get? A big phallic guitar shadow penis. Nice.

Hello NFL.... this was Prince?

Next year they should get Jenna Jameson to do the ping-pong trick at half-time. Cut out all pretense.

Prince rocks, btw.

Prince's halftime imagery questioned:
"NEW YORK - In the sensitive post-wardrobe malfunction world, some are questioning whether a guitar was just a guitar during Prince's Super Bowl halftime show.

Prince's acclaimed performance included a guitar solo during the 'Purple Rain' segment of his medley in which his shadow was projected onto a large, flowing beige sheet. As the 48-year-old rock star let rip, the silhouette cast by his figure and his guitar (shaped like the singer's symbol) had phallic connotations for some"

Oh, how the lying liars will say/do anything. Do they not know that their words are recorded and can easily be accessed years/months/days/hours later when they 'flip-flop' (fucking hate that term as all people need the flexibility to change their positions when data warrants, but....).

"Feingold is moving aggressively to cut off funding for the Iraq War forcing Bush to withdraw the troops, and he's doing so amidst Republican claims that only the president can decide on troop deployment.

Of course, Republicans were making exactly the opposite arguments during the Clinton presidency, as Glenn Greenwald digs up."

Why more... nay, ALL Democrats haven't been taking this tack is beyond me. If they fucking lie about you then don't go on their show, um 'kay? It is easy. They need you, you don't need them.
