A conversation with Drive-By Truckers' Patterson Hood [Music] | Louisville.com:
"But I'd say we probably at any given time have 125, 140 songs to choose from, to pull out at any moment. So, anything can go."
_______

Drive-By Truckers @ The Pabst Theater:
"If the phrase “salt of the earth” could describe any band, it would be the Drive-By Truckers—one of those rare groups that manage to exude authenticity and humility at the same time. So it was appropriate that the Athens, Ga.-based band was tapped to officially kick off Farm Aid, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this weekend at Miller Park. Like those Farm Aid champions, the Truckers keep their heads down, work hard and turn out amazing products on an almost yearly basis."
_______

Live Review: Drive-By Truckers, 9.29.10, Iowa City, IA - The Milk Carton - Forums:
"Very few bands have captured my imagination in recent times like Drive-By Truckers. I initially heard the band in my preparation for covering Lollapalooza 2010, and I haven’t looked back. The band’s got an impressively deep discography, and the surface was barely scratched at the festival. Needless to say, I pounced on tickets the second I saw they were giving me a hometown show. I gathered some friends, gathered some whiskey, and made my way to the show."
_______

Review Setlist: Drive-By Truckers and the Henry Clay People at the Pageant - St. Louis Music - A to Z:
"There are very few certainties in life, but there's one thing you can always count on: If Athens, Georgia's Drive-By Truckers are in town, you have the opportunity to see one of the best rock n'roll shows money can buy. That situation presented itself Saturday night, and roughly 2,000 folks took advantage of said opportunity -- each of which were rewarded in the form of rock n'roll salvation."

Will Johnson - Musical Genius

The Sound and the Fury: Austin's own Monster of Folk, Will Johnson Austin Music - AustinChronicle.com:
"'Centro-matic is my favorite band,' proclaims Patterson Hood of the Drive-by Truckers, who drafted Johnson and Danbom for his 2009 solo album, Murdering Oscar (And Other Love Songs), and accompanying tour. 'I was a huge fan long before I met them. I don't know if I can even put it into words. Every once in a while, something comes along that's just like nectar music. It's got everything I like in one place, as if I've been hearing it all my life.

'Centro-matic ought to be one of the biggest bands of the world. They're a fourpiece without an ounce of flab, and Will Johnson is just an ungodly great singer and player. I hope I've been influenced by him.'"

"Around 10:00 Friday night, Drive-By Truckers strolled out onto the 9:30 Club stage. Singer Patterson Hood raised his arms, puffed out his chest, and screamed: “Goddammit, I feel GOOD.” By 1 a.m., Hood and his fans were drenched in sweat twice over, the band was wrapping up a raucous cover of punk hero Jim Carroll’s “People Who Died,” and “good” had become an understatement of epic proportions for the way the night felt."

Living With Music: A Playlist by Michael Koryta - Paper Cuts Blog - NYTimes.com:
"11) A Ghost to Most, the Drive-By Truckers. “I guess I’ll never grow sideburns, it’s a shame with all I’ve got to go between.” A just consistently great band, by turns funny and dark, but always sharp and always rocking. “So Cold the River” features a bright but resentful country boy, prone to flashes of temper, and the Drive-By Truckers and Reckless Kelly became the heart of my soundtrack for those point-of-view portions."
_______

Vic Chesnutt: When the Bottom Fell Out | Spin Magazine Online:
"A few hours after I meet Gelb, the Drive-by Truckers' Patterson Hood is onstage at the 40 Watt Club, in front of a crowd more in the mood for a raucous wake than a reverent memorial. Hood saw Chesnutt for the first time at the 40 Watt back in the mid-'90s and was blown away.

'Pretty much from the first song, I stood there with my mouth gaping open, amazed,' he tells me later. 'It was almost like a religious experience. He had this fearlessness about exposing things about himself or his feelings about things that might make people cringe or make his grandmama cry, but he could write about the most dark, primal stuff and still somehow be funny.'"
_______

DBT refuses that long journey to the middle | Beyond the Trestle:
"As this little rambling comes to a close, I can’t help but extend the Truckers’ experience in the music world to the lives that we all lead. Today may be shitty. Yesterday may have been a trial. But, if you work hard, take a few chances, and trust your skills, you too could end up with the success you deserve. Or at least you will know you did the things that were true to your soul. Cooley, Hood and the rest of you, thanks for the lesson."
_______

Petty & Heartbreakers: America's greatest rock 'n' roll band:
"When Patterson Hood finished singing, he laid his guitar down on stage, still plugged in and walked off. He was followed, one-by-one, by Mike Cooley and the rest of the band, leaving the stage empty when the music ended. Wow."
_______

Petty and the Heartbreakers at their best when they stick to the hits - TwinCities.com:
"Openers the Drive-By Truckers, a club-level band with the spirit of a '70s Southern rock act, likely earned a few new followers with their performance.

They delivered a roaring, hourlong set with far more energy — and a far higher volume — than most stage-warmers. Kudos to Petty for letting them really crank it."

Music I Fucking Love

Jeff Soileau posted his song "Muscle Shoals" on Patterson's Facebook page earlier this week. His son, Evan, created the video. Both song and video are very fine work. The first line is such a large part of the lore of the Shoals. So many variations of that story and not at all a myth. I've seen catfish 4-5 feet in length and so old that they had algae growing on their backs.

The rest of the tune is a great history lesson of Northwest, AL.

Yes, we were very close to being Detroit. Very close.

Here's the vid....

Check out more tunes from Jeff...

jeff soileau on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads

BUT, what really captured my fancy about this tune was the vocalist, Lera Lynn. An Athens native (wtf is in the water down their, seriously... Athen's should have its own MTV).

I couldn't be more enamored with this woman. I've always been a sucker for female songstresses but, lawdy, I've been listening to her all week long. No, it doesn't hurt that she OMG beautiful (hey, I think Shakira is beautiful too, but if she opens her mouth and the volume is still on, I'm reaching for a bat to smash things and knitting needles to puncture my ear drums) BUT, she also is a mighty fine strummer (been trying to copy her all week w/0 much luck) and her voice is this ethereal soul-rangy perfection.

So, yes, I'm musically smitten. This is what makes music so very special. It is like finding magic that's been there all along. Keeps hope alive.

Makes me want to move to Athens... and y'all know my going-back-to-the-south issues. Powerful stuff.

Check out Lera Lynn:

I've played this about 3o times this week. I'm really digging the production by AthensSoundies, too. This video moans 'Athens'. Porch singing, summer rain on broad, green leaves...

But there was just always this sense of knowing, if we could just weather whatever we had to deal with, that we had something better in us. And that it wasn’t that far off.”"

Music I Like

I'm currently eat absolutely up with a band called NQ Arbuckle. They hail from the snowy country to our north... Canada for you geographically challenged Americans... which is pretty much all of you. Except you, of course. And you.

My radar first went NQ when I found a song in which they give a shout out to DBT (I posted it previously on AAW, but here it is again. I learned this one on the git-tar this week).

There's something very DBT lyrically about NQ. He does a very interesting job of incorporating the mundane into the lyrics.

And he can take a sweet tune and turn it psycho.

Example:

Q&A: Brad Morgan of Drive-By Truckers | Metromix Greenville

_______

A Valentine's Day To-Do - see the Drive-By Truckers in Knoxville:
"'In the studio is when we typically have a really good time,” Cooley said. 'Going out and touring is fun, and we really get off on it, but it's the job — or at least, for us it's the closest we get to a grind. But when we're looking for something new, going into the studio and getting to hang out with each other without all of the soundchecks and this and that is something we look forward to. Because if you write songs, your favorite song is always the next one.'"

"“Once you get to that bridge, sometimes it's a lot longer and shakier and sometimes made out of rope. But you've got to get across it. And once you do — once you achieve tolerance — you can get back to all of the respect and chemistry and natural things that make it happen in the first place."

Knoxville.com | Drive-By Truckers take no show and no crowd for granted : Music : Knoxville.com:
"How the Drive-By Truckers became a success story confounds even its members.

'This is our 25th year together and it's still a mystery to me,' says Patterson Hood. 'I just know that it works and I'm glad it works."

NineBullets.org - Message Board • View topic - Rolling Stone Shows Some Love:
"The new (Feb 18, 2010) issue of Rolling Stone has a little love for DBT, landing them on this month's 'Hot List:' 'This Fucking Job: Roots-rock social realism is back! 'A family can't live on these fast-food wages,' Patterson Hood sings over power chords crunchier than a double-stuffed gordita.'"
_______

Movie review: 'The Secret to a Happy Ending' features the Drive-By Truckers - washingtonpost.com:
"'The Secret to a Happy Ending' doesn't strictly obey the rules of the very genre it belongs to. Made by an unabashed fan, what it might lack in hard-nosed inquiry it makes up in conveying the ardor and near messianic belief that have made Drive-By Truckers a cult sensation."
_______

"....but it got canceled".

The Secret to a Happy Ending at the AFI Silver Theatre - Arts & Events - Washington City Paper:
"The documentary will probably present DBT in three different ways: DBT as the obvious heirs to Skynyrd’s “triple-threat” guitar section; DBT as real folk who still hang out in Athens, even though they’re famous; and DBT as manly men who dry themselves with cheetah pelts. If you doubt these truths, take your beef to Cooley and Patterson—they’ll be waiting for you at AFI."

Filmmaker attempting to secure funding for music documentary | TimesDaily.com | The Times Daily | Florence, AL:
"TUSCUMBIA - Most recording artists know when the audience is cheering, they're into the music.

Percy Sledge, who sang “When a Man Loves a Woman,” grew up in Leighton.

If they're silent, there's something wrong.

It's just the opposite for Percy Sledge, the man whose hit 'When a Man Loves a Woman' helped bring Muscle Shoals music to the world.

'When they're quiet, I've got 'em,' Sledge said in an interview that will be part of a short presentation that filmmaker Wallace Sears will use to get backing for a major documentary on Muscle Shoals music."

DnC gets a panda shout-out.

Morning Roundup: One Less Panda Edition - City Desk - Washington City Paper:
"Sometime around 8, Tai Shan entered a FedEx container and headed out to Dulles. I hope he took 123 to the Toll Road, rather than stay on 66, which is a killer! He will be flying back to China as part of a deal under which they sell us cheap power tools for the foreseeable future, accompanied by his redneck cousin Mei Lan, who is returning from Zoo Atlanta (sadness). Mei Lan will bore Tai Shan to tears on the way over, talking about how much better Atlanta's weather is than D.C.'s and why Drivin' N Cryin' never got their due."

Peter Grumbine reviews This Fucking Job

NEW DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS SONG, TOUR DATES, ALBUM ART, DOCUMENTARY | The People's Music:
"When most bands make an announcement, they simply do that: they make AN announcement, but not the Drive-by Truckers. No, when you get some DBT news, you get all kinds of cool shit in your inbox.

Today the Truckers released “This Fucking Job” the first song off their upcoming album “The Big To-Do,” they unveiled the cover art by the always brilliant Wes Freed, they announced tour dates, and released more screening dates for the documentary on the band “The Secret to a Happy Ending.” That’s more than most indie shitheads do in a career, and it was just another Tuesday for the Truckers."

If you haven't gotten Hubbards latest one you are missing out.

Sessions: Ray Wylie Hubbard | American Songwriter
Ray Wylie Hubbard, the bard behind Jerry Jeff Walker’s classic ‘73 cut “Up Against The Wall, Redneck Mother,” was visiting Nashville, up from his home outside of Austin, Texas, when he stopped in to discuss his new album A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There is No C). The album features the title cut (inspired by his favorite Poe poem) as well as the co-write with Hayes Carll, “Drunken Poet’s Dream,” also the first cut on Hayes’ 2007 album Trouble In Mind. Hubbard discussed life in Texas as an elder statesman of songwriting, what it’s like taking guys like Hayes under his wing and new tools like e-mail (!) and Masterwriter that keep his songwriting fresh. Take a listen to three live tracks that Hubbard recorded in our office and, below the interview, check out the video of Hubbard playing the album’s title track.
