The Big To-Do and 40 Watt Pictures

The Big To-Do is Here!

Today is the official release of Drive-By Truckers' The Big To-Do.

If you haven't already, go grab a copy of this awesome rock record.

All I can say is.... Whew.

Also, check out the new DBT Main Website. Nice work Jenn et. al!

In celebration of this fine day, I've posted pics and vids from the 40 Watt shows that I was too lazy to fuck with several weeks ago.

No blogurockumentary as those may be a thing of this blog's past.

Thanks to all in Athens who made it a kickass time (Jenn.. always Jenn! Shayne and TMcB... much love, y'all. Mattador and Kelly. Damon.... for working all night then jaw jacking with me about the night's doings @ 4 a.m. Sunday morning. Justin.... for being a genius and creating the 'Friends and Family' cooler back stage. All at the 40 Watt. Athens in general. Nuci's for a kick ass benefit. Hoods and Cooleys and Tuckers and Neffs and Gonzalezezezez. Weaver D's for that Automatic Sweet Tea that damn near saved my life (I stumbled into Weaver's Saturday afternoon bleary as could be... ordered my food, then asked for some sweet tea. Weaver pointed to the cup already in front of me and said "Automatic, baby. Automatic for the people". I thought, my that's odd. Then I turned around to see the wall plastered with REM memorabilia. Then I received my music lesson for the day).

To all the folks I'm sure I forgot in my little thank you jag.

But, the biggest thanks goes out to Ava Hood, the only person willing to play dinosaur tag with me. I'd been asking people all day before Ava stepped up. You Rock, Ava!

OK, here are the pics and one thought that has endured from Athens:

Redneck sexy: Somebody else's baby dangling from one arm while holding a PBR in the other hand.

Peter Grumbine reviews This Fucking Job

NEW DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS SONG, TOUR DATES, ALBUM ART, DOCUMENTARY | The People's Music:
"When most bands make an announcement, they simply do that: they make AN announcement, but not the Drive-by Truckers. No, when you get some DBT news, you get all kinds of cool shit in your inbox.

Today the Truckers released “This Fucking Job” the first song off their upcoming album “The Big To-Do,” they unveiled the cover art by the always brilliant Wes Freed, they announced tour dates, and released more screening dates for the documentary on the band “The Secret to a Happy Ending.” That’s more than most indie shitheads do in a career, and it was just another Tuesday for the Truckers."

If you haven't gotten Hubbards latest one you are missing out.

Sessions: Ray Wylie Hubbard | American Songwriter
Ray Wylie Hubbard, the bard behind Jerry Jeff Walker’s classic ‘73 cut “Up Against The Wall, Redneck Mother,” was visiting Nashville, up from his home outside of Austin, Texas, when he stopped in to discuss his new album A. Enlightenment B. Endarkenment (Hint: There is No C). The album features the title cut (inspired by his favorite Poe poem) as well as the co-write with Hayes Carll, “Drunken Poet’s Dream,” also the first cut on Hayes’ 2007 album Trouble In Mind. Hubbard discussed life in Texas as an elder statesman of songwriting, what it’s like taking guys like Hayes under his wing and new tools like e-mail (!) and Masterwriter that keep his songwriting fresh. Take a listen to three live tracks that Hubbard recorded in our office and, below the interview, check out the video of Hubbard playing the album’s title track.

Coal Mine Canaries

What Kos says... Always.

Daily Kos: Canaries in the coal mine

As you can see, our base is demoralized and tuned out, and plan on sitting out the 2010 elections at rates that will absolutely fuck us if they don't improve by November.

But again, African Americans, Latinos, and young voters aren't tuning out because we failed to build bipartisan concensus with Olympia Snowe. Making such claims is patently absurd. They're tuning out because we wasted 2009 "negotiating" with bad faith actors like Snowe and Mike Enzi. The tools were available to quickly pass a health care bill, yet Democrats were too incompetent to do so. And on issue after issue, they've proven completely ineffective.

THAT's why the base is sitting things out. They don't need blogs or MSNBC to tell them that Democrats can't govern. They already knew that Republicans don't want to govern, but the Democrats were supposed to be different. And they are, they want to govern, but they can't. And the voters that worked their asses off to give Democrats the White House and super majorities in Congress are now realizing that it was all for nothing. That all that talk about hope and change was cynical bullshit designed to motivate them. It worked once, but that crowd is learning the art of political cynicism, and it ain't pretty.

Cole may want to lash out at prominent progressives who have tried to prod our Democratic majorities in the right direction, and they certainly offer a tempting and easy target. But the reality is that voters demanded accomplishments, and on the big items, the Democrats have mostly failed. They weren't hired to tinker around the edges. They were hired to enact transformative "change". And while Cole and others like him might wish that progressives banded together to cheer along bullshit negotiations with Snowe and Enzi and repeated capitulations to an irrelevant minority and its corporatist allies in the Democratic Party, fact is, voters aren't that stupid. All the neocon cheerleading in the world didn't prevent Americans from realizing that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had been completely botched. Canned cheering for this health care bill wouldn't have saved it from similar sentiment.

Those prominent progressives have, in effect, been canaries in the coal mine -- warning of the disengagement and alienation among base voters we now see so clearly in the polling.

It would be absurd to blame those canaries for any deadly gas leaking into mine shafts.

Another Dem backs down: ‘Scale back’ our agenda | Raw Story:
"WASHINGTON -- Succumbing to the insecurities weighing on Democrats after losing Ted Kennedy's seat in Massachusetts, another key Democratic senator says it's time to take a step back and embark on a less ambitious agenda.

'I think the President Is going to have to scale back his agenda after we pass health care reform,' said Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) in an interview with ABC News."

Roof collapses as Georgia Theatre burns in Athens | ajc.com:

"A major fire erupted Friday at the Georgia Theatre, an Athens landmark and center of the local music scene, police said.

The fire, which began around 7 a.m., inflicted major damage on the building.

Athens-Clarke County Fire Chief Chuck Gulley said the fire was contained but that the roof of the building had collapsed. He said there was no evidence that anyone was in the building when the fire broke out around 7 a.m."
I never got to attend a show at the GT, but I did spend a few nights sitting outside across from the old beauty during my Athens GA Getaway.

I know this place was near and dear to many a good friend. My heart goes out to y'all today.

But, knowing the folks in Athens, she won't stay down for long. She'll rise again.

Album review: Patterson Hood's 'Murdering Oscar (and Other Love Songs)' | Turn It Up - A guided tour through the worlds of pop, rock and rap:
"Rating: 3 stars

The second solo release by the founder of Southern roots-rockers the Drive-By Truckers was nearly two decades in the making. Hood began cobbling together songs in the early ‘90s, but “Murdering Oscar (and Other Love Songs)” (Ruth St.) doesn’t sound like an odds-and-sods collection."
_______

Aquarium Drunkard: Music Blog Diversions :: Patterson Hood on Back Lounge Days (And Nights):

"(Diversions, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.)

Murdering Oscar, the long delayed follow-up to Patterson Hood’s 2004 solo debut, Killers And Stars, will finally see the light of day June 23rd. Unlike the sparse, home-recorded, Killers And Stars, Hood’s new collection finds him in familiar company backed by Dave Barbe, Centro-matic’s Will Johnson and Scott Danborn, his father, the famed Muscle Shoals musician David Hood, as well as his DBT bandmates. In this edition of Diversions, Hood reflects on the musical going’s on in the back lounge. A noted voracious music fan with eclectic tastes, below Hood waxes on everything from the Clash to Syd Dale."
_______

Rollo & Grady Interview // Patterson Hood - Los Angeles Music Blog:

"When I spoke with Patterson last week, we discussed his excitement over the release of Murdering Oscar, his longtime relationship with Truckers guitarist Mike Cooley and big-box retailer deals."
_______

Nashville Music - Patterson Hood's solo album Murdering Oscar is a striking blast from the past - page 1:

"Hood came by his grunge sensibilities honestly. 'Nirvana broke wide open and became huge pretty much the exact same week that my '80s band Adam's Housecat broke up, and doing a kind of music and opening the door for a kind of music selling records that I'd spent pretty much the '80s doing,' he says.

But there's a reason why it's not a sound that people generally associate with Hood's musical ventures, while loose, muscular Southern rock is. 'I was running like hell from it by the time the Truckers started,' he says. 'Because I had seen what happened in the wake of all of that. There were so many bad bands that came along in the wake of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. After that, all the sudden it was Bush and Nickelback.'

Murdering Oscar is an occasion for contemplating why musical styles, songs or life perspectives end up falling by the wayside. 'It gets to a point where you're too old to take your shirt off anymore,' Hood says. 'Grunge was bound to have a limited shelf life because once the flannel shirt came off... There's a real short shelf life with men without shirts on. About 22 or 23. It's like, 'Dude, put a shirt on, and for God's sake wear some shoes.'"

hbo true blood musician casting:

"The second season of HBO’s acclaimed vampire series True Blood is fast approaching (June 14th) and, honestly, we’re pretty damn excited. While the show is already jam packed with memorable characters, being a music site and all, we can’t help but wish that some of our favorite (or not) musicians could make a cameo appearance or two. Why? For starters, because some of them just look like they would fit the part. Others would maybe fit the part, but we mostly just want to see them die a violent on-screen death.

MPAA Admits to Losing PR War to the ‘Enemies of Copyright’

So, where do these misunderstandings possibly come from anyway? We figured a short list might be in order: destroying Napster and Audio Galaxy and not creating an alternative for the get-go, raiding people’s homes because they uploaded Star Wars (not necessarily leaking it in the first place), hacking the URN hash and polluting FastTrack, hacking The Pirate Bay, having Viacom serve DMCA notices to people posting video’s of people eating in a restaurant on YouTube, suing tens of thousands of average American’s including fining one individual $222,000 for sharing a couple songs, saying that files in a shared directory is copyright infringement in court, saying that evidence is too hard to get and that the industry shouldn’t be burdened to prove their cases in court, suggesting that iPods are little more than little pirate ships, saying in court that even making one back-up copy of a DVD is illegal, lobbying to put in the DMCA, demanding that laws should be in place to prevent any tinkering with DRM including for research purposes, installing rootkits on people’s computers, installing spyware on people’s computers via the MediaMax technology, being outed for being hypocrites for pirating a documentary movie and claiming that it’ll only be in a safe place, tried to bring people a broadcast flag and telling people you can’t record TV shows if the broadcaster doesn’t like it, trying to bi-pass the backfiring of WIPO and the FCC to bring in the broadcast flag anyway, tried to get ISPs to do all the copyright industry’s dirty work,

DBT Week in Review - 1/23/09

How cool is this. If my love for the band wasn't so great, my jealousy would be overwhelming.

Via Chris P.

D.C. stop for Drive-By Truckers :

"Jim Messina, deputy chief of staff to President Obama, is a fan of the band and attended the party at the band's invitation, frontman Patterson Hood said from the band's tour bus, now on its way to New Haven, Conn.

'We met Jim in New York in November when we played the two nights there right after the election,' Hood said. 'He spent his off days going to both Drive-By Truckers shows. So we've just been getting to know him a little bit.'

Apparently Messina's not the only Truckers fan in the nation's capital - the band was invited to play one of the inaugural balls on Tuesday night, as well. But the band already had signed on to play the party and wasn't able to do both.

'So we kinda ended up missing out on an opportunity to actually play for Obama,' Hood said."

Booker T Jones on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads:

"The album rolls through a selection of far-ranging compositions, each separate and distinct pieces that, by turn, manifest his characteristic adoration of the groove, exploring and exploiting each mood to the limit. Whether it's a case of cosmological serenity or funky staccato chicken peck work-outs, Jones' melodic vision and expansive arrangements are delivered with a mesmerizing quality. The album also pushes into sometime previously unvisited-by Jones territory: lead track 'Pound It Out' is a brawny, relentless exercise in hard rock, an intense, driving song that's far more of a head-banger than a blast of steam-heated soul.

If that seems out of place, you don't really know Mr. Jones; 'I like rock music, always have.' he said. 'Otis [Redding] did too, and we were getting into it a bit, but couldn't really do it back then. It just wasn't right for Stax.' The statement is more than a bit provocative, but the musician tosses out such revelations like carelessly hurled thunderbolts, an arsenal accrued over the course of his remarkable career."

The Taxman Needs to Goeth

Here's some follow up information on the Nuci's Space/Athens/Clarke County tax issue I blogged about yesterday:

Alabama Ass Whuppin': 1.20.09 - Better Angels of our Nature

Editorial: Don't deny tax exemption for Nuci's Space | Athens Banner-Herald:
"If, as the old saying goes, insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result each time, then the Athens-Clarke County government's insistence on continuing a legal battle aimed at denying a property tax exemption to local nonprofit Nui's Space is, well ... insane."

According to this part of the editorial, it seems Nuci's is within their legal rights to be exempt from a property tax so I'm not sure why the ACC Unified Government is pitching a bitch.

"In 2007, the facility's executive director applied for a property tax exemption under a relatively new addition to state law that exempts nonprofits from property taxes even if they operate like a business. That law was added to the books in 2006, after winning overwhelming approval - by a 68 percent to 32 percent margin - in a 2006 statewide referendum."

The conclusion of the editorial pretty much nails it:

"Yet, despite the unmitigated clarity of the state law, despite a court ruling, despite the assessment of a board of citizens, and despite the fact that the federal government has granted nonprofit status to Nuci's Space, the Athens-Clarke County government stubbornly insists there is some issue at stake, an issue of such overweening importance that it justifies a continuing crusade against a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping a group of people who make Athens the unique community it is.

It's time to stop the madness. The county Board of Assessors should drop this case - now."

Here's a rebuttal editorial. Doesn't seem to hold much water, especially when author asks us to trust him and the tax board.

Yeah... right.

Winders: Tax challenge could be a good thing:

"Trust me, inspection of all will strengthen the entire system. In this case, the coming of the taxman should be a welcome sight."

So do some civic duty today and send an email to the ACC. Be nice (This really stinks) but express your opinion on why the ACC would want to create such an unbelievable image issue for themselves.

I wish everyday could be like yesterday.

TV was like a best of BET marathon and it was awesome. I'm sick of seeing so much of whitey on the tube.

Check out the new Whitehouse.gov site. There's seems to be some kind of CHANGE to it:

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama's new administration ordered all federal agencies and departments on Tuesday to stop any pending regulations until they can be reviewed by incoming staff, halting last-minute Bush orders in their tracks."

And here's a real prayer. Rick Warren's was as awful as he is.

Rev. Lowery knocked it out of the park.

While I was thoroughly put off by the inclusion of Rick Warren, having Lowery follow him up was a clear contradiction. Obama is a smart guy even when he pisses me off a bit.

Crooks and Liars:

"Rev. Lowery's benediction, on the other hand, was surprisingly fiery, especially from the lips of an 87-year-old. Its wrapup was spine-tingling:

Help us then, now, Lord, to work for that day when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, when tanks will be beaten into tractors, when every man and every woman shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid; when justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around -- (laughter) -- when yellow will be mellow -- (laughter) -- when the red man can get ahead, man -- (laughter) -- and when white will embrace what is right.

Let all those who do justice and love mercy say amen."

A main vein street in San Francisco is named 'Bush' Street. Yesterday morning someone took Obama stickers and placed them over all of the street signs on Bush.
