Dissent and Disagreement

Snarky link Thursday. (or "I'm a lazy blogger, Thursday". Readers choice)

But first, a must watch. This is what journalism should be and how Democrats should respond to the crazy that is Rumsfeld and the rest. One of the greatest history lessons ever:

Lie By Lie

Real, Live Cronyism: Is there anything these Repugs can do to receive the following email?

RE: You're fired.

I guess not if voting is no longer a valid method of selecting our leaders.

It is enough to make one go bald. Luckily, science may have an answer for that.

The first time that the word 'hip' and this celebrity's name have been used in the same sentence in a LONG time.

Deadly Forces

Deadly Force, indeed.

Some serious carnage occurred in my hood and surrounding hoods, yesterday as someone went beserk and ran over 14 pedestrians in his SUV.

You've got to understand that SF is a pedestrian town. People don't drive every where like they do in the rest of the country. When you do drive in the city it is like th 20th level of some video game as you are constantly searching for people stepping into the street. So, if you want to go ape shit and do some damage in a car, it ain't really hard. See below:

Up to 14 hurt in SF hit-and-run spree / 7 critical:

"The victims of Tuesday's hit-and-run carnage were men and women, old and young, black, white and Asian. One was on a bike, the rest on foot.

They were mowed down in at least 11 locations in San Francisco. The lone fatality was in Fremont, a 54-year-old man hit as he walked along a bike lane in an area without sidewalks.

At least 14 people were sent to the hospital."

Yesterday I noted that Iran's President challenged Shrub-a-dub to a debate. Here is a preview of these 2 deadly forces debating the most important topics according to the MSM:

Sneak Preview: Ahmadinejad vs. Bush:
BUSH: Read my lips: Fergie's solo project, the smash single 'London Bridge,' will go down as the summer's freedom anthem of '06.

AHMADINEJAD: Without the backing support of the powerful Black Eyed Peas, Fergie, like the lapdog Tony Blair, warbles off-key to herself as the world ignores her abyss of talent.
_______________

Faux News' rating have met a deadly force. People turning that crap off their TVs:

Fox News' Ratings Take a Nosedive:
"Somewhere, Keith Olbermann is sticking pins in a Bill O'Reilly voodoo doll: Fox News' ratings, TVNewser reports, are down since August of last year. Like, way down. Like down 28 percent in primetime among all viewers, down 20 percent in primetime in the 'money demo' (viewers aged 25-54) and down 7 percent in daytime viewership overall. In fact, the only place Fox is up is during the day, when they managed a ratings increase of just 2 percent, and even then only in the money demo."
_______________

The deadly force that is religion doesn't seem to mystically reside in our brains.

No 'God Spot' in the Human Brain:
The human brain does not contain a single 'God spot' responsible for mystical and religious experiences, a new study finds.
_______________

The deadliest of the deadly forces. I'm sure they'll be a movie with Bruce Willis on this scenario soon. Check your local listings:

Black Holes: The Deadliest Force in the Universe:
"Aug. 28, 2006 — Imagine a black hole swallowing Earth, ending life in an instant. It's not only the stuff of pulp sci-fi novels but, scientists say, a looming possibility."

Sex, Swearing and Weed

This post's title ought to light up some search engines. Seriously, if you have a blog just use some sexual dirty words in your titles then sit back and watch the traffic flow in. Amazing.

____________

Today we've got Iran's President challenging Bush to a televised debate. There is no way in Hades that this will EVER happen but let's say Chief Doofus accepted this debate. A thousand 9/11s couldn't do the damage to the U.S. as one Bush debate on a world stage. I don't think Bush would ever get past trying to pronounce Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's name.

____________

Mother Joker's in the White House and nobody gives a damn.

____________

Tsk, Tsk. Republican cut-and-runners.

Brownie is blamin' the administration for the Katrina debacle and rightly so. But here's where I've got a problem:
'I have to confess ... you want to protect the president when you're a political appointee,' he said, 'so you're torn between telling the absolute truth and relying on those talking points. To this day, that is my biggest regret. '
I have to confess, Brownie, that as a political appointee your first job should not be to cover the president's ass. Especially when you work in EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT for the country. Your first job is to protect the citizens and if you recognize that a component of the government is not functioning in a manner that fully PROTECTS THE CITIZENS then it is your duty to "tell the absolute truth".

Heckuva job, fucker.
____________

Wacky tobacky's dull cousin is making a come back, hopefully. Why, oh, why can't an agricultural state like Alabama take the lead on this. (Obviously a rhetorical question).

California Seeks to Clear Hemp of a Bad Name:
"But what gets him excited is the crop he sees as a potential windfall for California farmers: industrial hemp, or Cannabis sativa. The rapidly growing plant with a seemingly infinite variety of uses is against federal law to grow because of its association with its evil twin, marijuana.

“Industrial hemp is a wholesome product,” said Mr. Meyer, 65, who says he has never worn tie-dye and professes a deep disdain for “dope.”

“The fact we’re not growing it is asinine,” Mr. Meyer said."
Asinine, indeed. Asinine.... what a great word.

____________

How the buttfuck am I suppose the know the motherfucking answer to this question, you cocksucker? Intercouse you! Intercourse you right in the ear!

Why are sex words our worst swearwords?:
"Bodily function words, while popular, are not universally taboo. In Finnish, Liberman says, all sexual acts and sex organs can be expressed in language clean enough for Ann Landers. You can't employ Finnish sexual words to swear, he says, since it would come out something like 'Oh, intercourse!'"

So, So Close...

A relaxing Sunday ruined....

I had planned on a relaxing Sunday but it turned into 4 hours of a gut churner as Stewart Cink, a Florence, Alabama native lost to Tiger Woods in a playoff for the WGC - Bridgestone Invitational. This is a big year end invite that Tiger had previously won 4 times and Stewart won in '04. Pay out for the winner in 1 million +. 2nd place receives a paltry 750K.

I had the pleasure of growing playing golf with Stewart. Our parents were both members of Florence Country Club and we were both pupils under Chris Burns, one of the finest youth golf teachers in the south. Stewart was a couple of years younger than me. Even then, we all knew Stewart would be a pro someday. While I was sneaking cigarettes in the woods or chasing girls around the pool, Stewart was playing another 9 or on the putting green practicing his stroke. His mom would drive us around to Dixie Junior tournaments. This was a really fine time in my life.

Stewart had 2 chances to take down the best player in the world but he couldn't convert. Tiger ended up winning it instead of Stewart losing it. Stewart showed some HUGE balls, though, and I think the experience will make him an even better golfer.

Woods beats Cink in Playoff:
"I can't say enough good things about Tiger Woods,' Cink said. 'I've been playing against him since I was about 17, and I just relish the opportunity to go against him in another playoff sometime.

'I think it's the real pinnacle of where our sport is right now, and I was up there for a little while.'"

We're giving the terrorist what they want. Take a deep breath and read:

What the Terrorists Want:
"I'd like everyone to take a deep breath and listen for a minute.

The point of terrorism is to cause terror, sometimes to further a political goal and sometimes out of sheer hatred. The people terrorists kill are not the targets; they are collateral damage. And blowing up planes, trains, markets or buses is not the goal; those are just tactics. The real targets of terrorism are the rest of us: the billions of us who are not killed but are terrorized because of the killing. The real point of terrorism is not the act itself, but our reaction to the act.

And we're doing exactly what the terrorists want.
.....
Our politicians help the terrorists every time they use fear as a campaign tactic. The press helps every time it writes scare stories about the plot and the threat. And if we're terrified, and we share that fear, we help. All of these actions intensify and repeat the terrorists' actions, and increase the effects of their terror.

Taller people are smarter: study:
"NEW YORK (Reuters) - While researchers have long shown that tall people earn more than their shorter counterparts, it's not only social discrimination that accounts for this inequality -- tall people are just smarter than their height-challenged peers, a new study finds.

'As early as age three -- before schooling has had a chance to play a role -- and throughout childhood, taller children perform significantly better on cognitive tests,' wrote Anne Case and Christina Paxson of Princeton University in a paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research."

DBT Week in Review - 8/25

Ava's Man:

I'm currently reading Rick Bragg's book Ava's Man and when I saw this picture posted by datdork on the Ninebullets Board:, I immediately thought "Ava's Man". The "awwwww" factor is through the roof on this one. Great pictures, datdork!

(The title of the thread is "PICS Patterson Hood and the Screwtopians 8/19/06 Private Party". I didn't ask permissions to post the picture, so, datdork, if you want me to pull it down let me know)

But let's not forget that this isn't Patterson's only child. He and Cooley had a love child several years back and the result is below. Such a proud papa and doting mama!

(I've used this picture in a WIR before and probably used the same joke, so pardon the reducdancy, but it makes me laugh)

Kyle from the DBT Yahoo Group posted this link to an article on Cameron Strang, the President of New West Records. Great read.

FMQB: Cameron Strang:
"Ben Lee and Drive-By Truckers are good examples of artists who were “critics’ darlings” but took awhile to sell some units. What were the most important tools you employed that allowed them to get traction and sell records?

Again, one of the best tools we had was one of the principles we talked about earlier – having a long-term vision for the artists. One of the things about this business is you have to do some things that in the short run don’t make sense, but will hopefully look like good decisions in the long run, and each artist is different. With Drive-By Truckers, one of the things we all felt strongly about was the live show. Early on we took a good chunk of the budget and put those guys on the road. We got with management and said, “Let’s put them on the road and get to these markets at least twice. All over the U.S. ” It paid off in spades because one of the goals we had for the band was to sell out The Fillmore within a year after we signed them, and they did it! It took an initial investment; it took getting them in the market twice. Now they’re making a living doing shows.

The other thing that’s been a big tool for us is the Internet. It really allows bands to get to the point of critical mass in terms of the fan base. I don’t know that the Internet’s the be-all-and-end-all when you have to sell millions of records to make your business plan make sense, but it certainly helps take a band from 10,000 to 50,000."

Live show recorder extraordinaire, Sloan Simpson, from Southern Shelter, was recently written about in Flagpole Magazine. Great article on a great taper:

Flagpole Magazine:
"Sloan is an amazing person. He is invaluable to the music scene simply for his interest alone, says Brown Frown's Andrew Prater. It seems like every time I go to a show, Sloan is there to tape it. That goes for bands great and small alike. The fact that he takes the time to go see and tape local bands translates into a great feeling of support and interest. It makes everyone feel a warm fuzzy in their tummy.

So what, aside from warm fuzzies, makes someone drive up from Atlanta, where he works and lives, night after night, to record bands that sometimes have audiences of fewer than 20 people? And then work diligently afterwards to get the shows posted on the Internet, often within 24 hours?

A lot of it came from seeing bands I didn't know about opening for people like Drive-By Truckers, Barbara Cue and Vic Chesnutt, acts that were already on my radar here in Atlanta, says Simpson. I'd record some of [the opening acts], become a fan of their music, and eventually find out which members were involved in other bands. Since so many musicians are in multiple bands in Athens, it soon turned into something like the Kevin Bacon Game,' each show by an Athens band I hadn't seen before led me to discover yet another band."

While Wheeler from Alablawg may focus mainly on the law and politics of Alabama and the nation, he's a man of music, too, and he has some thoughts on the recent audtion for American Idol in Birmingham:

The Alablawg: A Southern Man Don’t Need [American Idol] Around Anyhow:
But let me say right here and right now, that any Ruben wannabe who sings “Sweet Home Alabama” for their audition should immediately be told they ain’t the one and booted out of the arena unless said poser can first:

1. Tell us who “Mr. Young” is.

2. Explain who ”ol’ Neil” put down and how he did it.

3. Identify the Guvnah so loved by Birminghamians, and the source of the felicity.

4. Tell us why Watergate ought to have burdened anyone’s conscience.

5. Point to Muscle Shoals on a map.

6. Finally, be a Ken Jennings wannabe and tell us to what question Montgomery’s got the answer.

You got that right. If you are an AI contestant, before you can even tell the judges what’s your name, you have to answer these questions. The only thing you need to ask is was I right or was I wrong. "

My response to the below article from the NYT is, "Fuck you, Music Industry". Just because you guys haven't been intune enough to keep up with technology and flexible enough to morph you business plans to reflect the hyper changing music market you try to squeeze blood out of every turnip you can get your hands on. Big corporations suck!

Now the Music Industry Wants Guitarists to Stop Sharing - New York Times:
"In the last few months, trade groups representing music publishers have used the threat of copyright lawsuits to shut down guitar tablature sites, where users exchange tips on how to play songs like “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” “Highway to Hell” and thousands of others."

Can pop music be both great art and shameless kitsch? By Jody Rosen:
"These days, it's hard to find anyone who isn't a Johnny Cash fan. Three years after his death, he's become one of those rare musicians held in near-universal esteem. Everyone knows he's great, and his music is touched with such timeless and ineffable cool that hipsters still love him despite his embrace by the unhip. "

There was a time.....

... when any anit-Bush article I linked to came from a liberal blog. That tide may be turning. Today the WaPo, MSNBC, ABC, Slate and Harpers are all represented in today's documentation of the failures of this administration.

But since Bush can't be re-elected (thank Vishnu) the focus should be on the Republican party because these policies are their policies. Just because Bush says he's "The Decider" doesn't necessarily make it true (he doesn't even decide which under-roos to wear in the morning). The Republican Party is reponsible for the debacle in:

New Orleans. Check out Ava Lowry's latest short. Powerful.

Iraq:

Bush's New Iraq Argument: It Could Be Worse:
"For three years, the president tried to reassure Americans that more progress was being made in Iraq than they realized. But with Iraq either in civil war or on the brink of it, Bush dropped the unseen-progress argument in favor of the contention that things could be even worse."

Iran:

Iran's Mideast influence boosted by "war on terror":
"LONDON (Reuters) - Iran's standing in the Middle East has been bolstered by President George W Bush's 'war on terror' and its power will continue to grow unless stability is restored to its neighbors, a top think tank said on Tuesday."

National Security:

Six Questions for Michael Scheuer on National Security (Harpers.org):
"Michael Scheuer served in the CIA for 22 years before resigning in 2004; he served as the chief of the bin Laden unit at the Counterterrorist Center from 1996 to 1999. He is the formerly anonymous author of Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror and Through Our Enemies' Eyes: Osama bin Laden, Radical Islam, and the Future of America. I met him for breakfast last week at an IHOP in the Virginia suburbs outside of Washington. Over a plate of eggs and hash browns, he answered a series of questions about the current state of the Bush Administration’s “War on Terrorism.” His prognosis was illuminating and insightful—and, unfortunately, almost unrelentingly grim."

Although Bush is soley response for Moronic Press Conferences:

What a Moronic Presidential Press Conference!:
"George W. Bush criticizing someone for not understanding the world is like … well, it's like George W. Bush criticizing someone for not understanding the world. It's sui generis: No parallel quite captures the absurdity so succinctly."

And Crawford:

"Vacation, all he ever wanted. Vacation, having to get away":

Bush Should Rethink His Vacation
"It is the sort of moment when peace and history could be hanging in the balance for a generation to come—the kind of tipping point when American presidents can no longer leave the negotiating to underlings. They must take the world stage themselves to find a new way out, simply because no one else has the globo-oomph to do so. There is a grand American tradition behind this sort of personal involvement of America's chief executive, one that goes back almost precisely a century. Teddy Roosevelt spent much of August 1905 directing talks in Portsmouth, N.H, that prodded Japan and Russia into an agreement ending the Russo-Japanese war. Woodrow Wilson went to Paris for nearly six months between January and June of 1919 to negotiate the end of World War I. Franklin Roosevelt, though he was dying and suffered a terrible physical disability, flew halfway around the world to hash out the postwar peace at Yalta. Richard Nixon went to China, Ronald Reagan journeyed to Reykjavik and Jimmy Carter holed up at Camp David, where he tested the limits of brinksmanship with Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat.

George W. Bush is going to Kennebunkport, where he'll test his golf skills with Poppy."

Because, some have noted that Bush may be afflicted with presenile dementia. Check out this video.

All of this makes me wonder what kind of law the Republicans and the Religious Reicht will try to pass to prevent this:

Joy to the Wor..... Ah, Nevermind

Yesterday was AAW's 1 year anniversary. Check out 12 Months of Ass Whuppin'

What in the hell is this world coming to?

NASCAR fans are thinking about voting for Democrats.
But with U.S. soldiers dying in Iraq, war raging in the Middle East and gasoline prices soaring, he is not sure how he will vote.

Apparently there ARE atheist in foxholes and they want to be recognized.
'A lot of people manage to serve without having to call on a higher power.'

I found something in common with Bush.
He loves to cuss, gets a jolly when a mountain biker wipes out trying to keep up with him, and now we're learning that the first frat boy loves flatulence jokes

Folks from Alabama take on the Christian Coalition.
Taking the LordÂ’s name in vain covers much more than saying God Damn. And while Republican Jesus is funny as a cartoon, he is scary as hell in real life.

Finally the real beautiful girls from U.S. who are dying are being written about and not some blond teeny bop who had one too many mohitos and made the mistake of hanging out with some Euro trash while she vacationed on some tropical isle.

Why, such things could go and give a man hope.

But just what a second.....

Here we've got McCain talking out of both sides of his ass.
John McCain a staunch defender of the Iraq war, on Tuesday faulted the Bush administration for misleading Americans....

Krazy Konservatives Kan't stand the thought of adults being able to CHOOSE to watch adult programming in the privacy of a hotel room THEY RENTED.
A coalition of conservative groups that 'strongly believe' hotel porn is prosecutable...

And Republicans REALLY HAVE been stealing elections (link is a MOV. Must watch) and they plan on stealing more.

Sigh.

And we all know that NASCAR fans will be scared back under their beds by the time elections roll around.

And we all know that God's Own Army will allow as much recognition of atheist as they do gays.

And we all want a more serious minded... or, hell, just minded, president. (I'm sure the Shi'ites are already developing a "Pull My Finger" suicide bomber.

Double sigh.

But on the bright side, College Football is right around the corner.

Woo-Hoo!!!!

12 Months of Ass Whuppin'

Alabama Ass Whuppin's One Year Anniversary.

It all started with a trip to Palau. From there it became a forum for me to discuss politics, religion, music and most importantly The Drive-by Truckers. And for someone with a short attention span it has been an almost daily committment and ,well, I'm kinda proud of that.

I've cyber-met and met-met a ton of great people through Alabamaasswhuppin'. The beautiful and famous Ms. Jenn Bryant, MattR, marklynn, olwiggum Corey and the rest at Ninebullets, Alec from One of These Days, Mark G., Jayne, Tony, Jay from Bama, Mark M., Roel, MaddyC, Ernie, Kyle, and a ton of other folks through the DBT yahoo group.

Bluegal and Alablwag, the folks from New West, Sloan from Southern Shelter, Largehearted Boy, Townser from TheLeftisRight, commentors from across the U.S. and around the globe. Just a butt load of really, really cool, kind, funny folks. Really, I've been very, very lucky not to of had the trolls, flamers and jackasses that seem to plague other sites. Just some really great community minded folks. I'm very lucky. Sorry if I forgot to mention some folks above. I'm sure I'll be adding to the list as the day progresses.

I'm real proud of my DBT Picture Tours and Week in Reviews. Click on those links to see the archives.

I'm also proud of some of the political rantings expressed. I've refined my political commentary from "Fuck Bush" to "Motherfuck Shrub". Wow! I'm amazed at how far I've come as a political pundit.

Thanks to everyone who has visited (almost 18,000 unique individuals since November, 2005).

Below are some month to month highlights of the blog.

Before we get started with what some might call the "news" I'd like to tip my foh-ty and pour some of my malt onto the ground for a grand ol' business that shutting down in Florence, Al after 94 years:

Bubble Boy:

News on President George W Bush and the Bush Administration:
"The White House made a big to-do about President Bush's meeting Monday with four outside experts on Iraq. Spokesman Tony Snow held the meeting up as proof that the president is interested in -- and consistently exposed to -- different points of view, and even dissent.

But the only thing that meeting demonstrated is that true dissent is still not welcome at the White House, unless you define dissenters as anyone who doesn't agree with the president on absolutely everything.

By all independent accounts, none of the academics who were granted an audience with the president Monday criticized his fundamental approach to Iraq. At most, they suggested minor course corrections.

And none of them told him what he evidently refuses to hear: That it's not working.

I've written a fair amount about the Bush Bubble over the past nearly three years. And it seems to me that, with a tiny handful of exceptions, the bubble is still fully operational."

Too Close to Home

Holy Shit! When the JonBenet story broke yesterday, I gave it nary a second of my attention as I believe that the over coverage of such tragedies by the MSM is sensational and unworthy of 24 hour news cycles. Local stories should be covered by the local news, not made into national peep shows.

However, I did ruefully chastise myself for believing that the parents were the culprits of this crime. A good reminder to never, ever be influenced by the MSM.

I had no intention of blogging this story until this morning when I checked out my hometown newspaper online:

Man arrested in Ramsey slaying was UNA student | TimesDaily.com|Florence, AL:
"FLORENCE -- The man being held in Thailand in connection with the 1996 slaying of JonBenet Ramsey was formerly enrolled in the elementary education degree program at the University of North Alabama, school officials said Wednesday.

John Mark Karr did not earn a degree from UNA but was a student-teacher at Kilby Laboratory School in Florence in January 2000, just over three years after the 6-year-old beauty queen from Boulder, Colo., was killed."
I attended both UNA and am a graduate of Kilby Laboratory School.

Too weird, and too close to Home.

Update: Then again, he could be full of shit and just seeking attention. Innocent until proven guilty, innocent until proven guilty......

Thank jeebus Abu Gonzales told me that Terrorists are in our neighborhoods: Armed with this information I went to each of my neighor's homes last night packing heat, drug them from their dinner tables at gun point, and made them empty all of the bottled liquids they keep into the sewage drain in the street. I'm a true patriot and my neighborhood is a bit safer than it was 2 days ago. Thank you for reminding me that I'm suppose to be "scared shitless of what's going down", Abu Gonzales!
"'The most dramatic change,' said Gonzales, 'is the nature of the enemy our country today faces -- a stateless enemy sometimes hidden and nurtured here in our neighborhoods, taking advantage of the very laws they mock with their killing and destruction, as a shield from detection and prosecution.'"

What a wacky world we live in. The Fake News has become the real news and the Real News has become the fake news.
(AP) The Federal Communications Commission has mailed letters to the owners of 77 television stations inquiring about their use of video news releases, a type of programming critics refer to as 'fake news.'

Video news releases are packaged news stories that usually employ actors to portray reporters who are paid by commercial or government groups.

The letters were sparked by allegations that television stations have been airing the videos as part of their news programs without telling viewers who paid for them. "

"Like Elvis... The King"

GOP Rep: racial profiling of Middle Easterners okay:
"One GOP House member, Peter King (R-N.Y.), even suggests that airport officials 'should consider Middle Eastern ethnic background as a reason for further questioning,' according to GovExec.com."
So, by this standard, shouldn't we pull aside every Texan, New Yorker, North Carolinian, and Arizonian (all places that Timothy McVeigh resided at some point in time) for further questioning when THEY want to get on a plane or rent a Ryder truck? How about Republicans and NRA members since McVeigh's "only known affiliations are as a registered Republican in his New York days, and as a member of the National Rifle Association while he was in the Army."

The Stranger

Bush finally said "fuck it" and kicked the press completely out of the White House. At least he's not pretending anymore.

U.S. Lags World in Grasp of Genetics and Acceptance of Evolution:
"A comparison of peoples' views in 34 countries finds that the United States ranks near the bottom when it comes to public acceptance of evolution. Only Turkey ranked lower.

Among the factors contributing to America's low score are poor understanding of biology, especially genetics, the politicization of science and the literal interpretation of the Bible by a small but vocal group of American Christians, the researchers say.

“American Protestantism is more fundamentalist than anybody except perhaps the Islamic fundamentalist, which is why Turkey and we are so close,” said study co-author Jon Miller of Michigan State University."

Let's Cut the Bullshit

Soda commercials are reading the Lipton tea leaves and fortelling our terrified future. I may be a Pepper and you may be a Pepper but that bottle of Evian, once the Tab is pulled, doesn't have any intention of being a Pepper too. Evian is part of a sleeper cell that includes Diet Coke and Mentos. Deadly killers, all three....

TIME: When terror imitates the soda commercial:
"An article at TIME.com notes that a soft drink commercial that mockingly depicts airport security agents confiscating a passenger's soda just so they can drink it themselves can still be seen on cable televison, and, in light of recent events, even the 'normally irony-aware people at The Daily Show' haven't tried 'stopping' it, RAW STORY has found."
Oh, please, yes, let's cut the bullshit, shall we?

Let's Cut the Bullshit
"The one thing that the Democratic Party and even some liberals will not say is this: Bush and Cheney are losing the war on terror and have no hope of winning it."
......
Al Qaeda is some motherfuckers in a cave and halfwit wannabe James Bonds..... To compare them to massive industrial societies with the power to conquer a continent is desperately sad.

If the enemy is so evil, where is the draft, where is the tax hikes to fight this war?
.........
Operation Yellow Elephant revealed the future of the GOP to be soulless fucking cowards, one and all. Ask them to enlist, they would rather suck dicks in San Quentin first. They want no part of the war they cheer on.
.........
Cut and run? Shit, the people bitching about this have no stake in either.... We need to get out of Iraq, yesterday. The Iraqis can choose to kill each other or not, but it is their choice, not ours. Pretending otherwise gets more people killed.
We don't need no explosive detection technology. That's for pussies who support Al Queda.

Bush staff wanted bomb-detect cash moved:
"WASHINGTON - While the British terror suspects were hatching their plot, the Bush administration was quietly seeking permission to divert $6 million that was supposed to be spent this year developing new homeland explosives detection technology."
This should be terribly obvious to all, but, unfortunately it isn't so here's the Republican playbook on their recent politicization of terror.
....
Some pretty good editorials are appearing across the land:

Fayetteville, NC Editorial:
"Something else verges on terrifying too. The reactions by some of our politicians were a chilling reminder of their willingness to use our fear to further their own agenda.

The terrorists aren’t attacking one political party. They are attacking all of us. Politicians can, and should, debate our strategy against terrorists and the course of the war in Iraq. But questioning each other’s patriotism or resolve against terrorists should be out of bounds. It is unnecessary and divisive. And it is, quite simply, a diversionary tactic. Members of both parties have repeatedly shown by their votes strong support for the war against terror."
and

BUSH AND CHENEY'S REIGN OF ERROR:
"THESE PEOPLE have no shame. Their contempt for democracy is so great they will stop at nothing to undermine it. Their adherence to fundamentalist beliefs that blinds them to reality is frightening. They must be stopped.

And that's just the Republicans.

Let's start with Vice President Dick Cheney."

DBT Week in Review - 8/11/06

Wilson Dam

They done gone and fucked up Wilson Dam.

As you all know Wilson Dam plays a prominent role in the lyrics of several DBT songs; Never Gonna Change, Uncle Frank, Thank God for the TVA, etc. The locks of the dam are where when Jason was 15 his girlfriend let him put his "hand up under her shirt" (TG for the TVA).

Recently, a barge made a major fuck up in one of the locks and damn near contaminated (even more) a good stretch of the Tennessee River. Here's the story: Barge strikes lock; river traffic halted.

I received a forwarded email soon after from my good friend Billy Ray Casteel (need lumber? Call Billy Ray) with some attached pictures of the debacle. I'm posting them here with the commentary from the email. Text and pictures come from an Alan August:
"This happened early morning, August 3, 2006. Now all barge traffic is stopped on the Tennessee River. Traffic is stopped from crossing the Wilson Dam due to the threat of explosion of toluene in the barges.

Evidently the tug operator nor the lock operator were paying attention and did not see the end of one of the barges get under the upper lock gate as the water level in the lock was being raised.

When the water level got high enough the barge lifted the upper gate out of its track. Now the gate want go back down.

This is the gate which goes down about 30 feet and the barges float over it to get out of the lock.

These barges are filled with toluene and are double hulled so nothing has spilled even though one hull has been breeched."

See more on Wilson Damn and the locks at the "River Lore" post.

Ed Burns is apparently a fan of DBT and will be using GDLL in one of his upcoming movies. Chris Cline clues us in on the Yahoo Group:

NPR and DBT

NPR has been showing much love for the Truckers:

NPR : Drive-By Truckers: Rock Southern Style:
"Mike Cooley, Patterson Hood, Jason Isbell, Brad Morgan, John Neff and Shonna Tucker are the Drive-By Truckers.

They visited NPR's Studio 4A to play some tunes and talk about their latest album, and what it's like to be pegged as the heirs to Lynyrd Skynyrd -- the next great southern rock band. They also talk about the recurring theme in their music of self destruction, and their Southern roots."
"Can't we all just get along" and play some music

TimesDaily recently had a good article on the recording studios in the Shoals and how they created a place of racial harmony. See, there ARE a lot of good folks down there, Neil Young just wasn't around.

Panel: Studios were a source of harmony in tense times:
"Hood said he was a 'city slicker,' who grew up in Sheffield and worked in his father's tire store.

Hood said all his favorite music growing up was performed by black artists and his goal was to one day work with them.

'There was no color coming from the radio,' Hood said. 'To me, it was just good music"

Oh, boy, the morality police are at it again: Sexual Lyrics Prompt Teens to Have Sex

Here's a good response to such silliness:

Devil's Music Made Me Have Sex! / This just in: Raunchy lyrics make teens all hot 'n' bothered. Led Zeppelin sighs:
"See, there is this new study. Yet another one that claims that teens who listen to lots of sexually explicit music full of 'degrading' lyrics are much more likely to have sex sooner then those who listen to, say, church hymns and banjo music and Carrie Underwood preening her way through 'Jesus Take the Wheel.' I know, it's shocking."
Lynam

Finally, today, I want to introduce you to a dirty little secret of mine. The band is called Lynam and they hail from Birmingham, Alabama. I was turned onto them by my good friend Mary Mac who is a good friend of the drummer.

I'd have to define their music as Slutty Rock. They pay homage to the sounds of their youth and the sounds that influenced their style. From the band's MySpace page:
Influences: Arena Rock, Bluegrass, Steely Dan, Mutt Lange, Mike Shipley

Sounds Like: If Def leppard, Weezer and Guns N Roses started a band together.
They've recently jumped to a major label and released one seriously fun Rock album called Slave to the Machine.

On the track, Giving up on Rock n Roll, they pay lyrical homage to Van Halen, White Snake, GnR, Def Lep., Skid Row, Motley Crue, Poison, AND MTV's musical hook.

In this album Lynam borrows several riffs and sounds from that era of Rock, but they aren't doing it maliciously or are attempting to fool you into thinking that they created this sound. Lynam is simply reintroducing a sound that has great influence on them and has, in some quarters, been unfairly demonized by the Rock Gestapo. They are tackling this issue in the same manner that SRO tackled the "Southern Rock" misconception. They ain't as deep or serious but just as much fun.

Here are some web links to get acquianted with this power trio:

John from Americablog has already summed up my feelings on this "Red Alert". (damn east coast bloggers. Takin' all the good observations before us west coasters are even awake):
And isn't it queer that the emergency is declared within a day of Republican party leader Ken Mehlman launching an all-out offensive against Democrats following Joe Lieberman's loss in Connecticut, an offensive in which Mehlman, the White House and Republican operatives are claiming that Democrats no longer care about national security or the war on terror."
and...
"Bottom line: Joe Lieberbush lost. The message is spreading across the land that incumbents who embrace the president are in serious trouble. And the Republicans needed to divert attention, to stop this meme in its tracks, and lo' and behold we have our first terror alert that I can recall since the last election, and it's our first ever Red Alert! September 11 -- what year? 30 percent of Americans don't know

But those polled who were 55+ could tell you every last boring detail of the ice cream social they went to back in 1954 where they met a preacher's daughter who let them pet her calf in the back of their coupe.
"WASHINGTON (AFP) - Some 30 percent of Americans cannot say in what year the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington took place, according to a poll published in the Washington Post newspaper."

This memory black hole is essentially the problem of the older crowd: 48 percent of those who did not know were between the ages of 55 and 64, and 47 percent were older than 65, according to the poll.

Don't Be Afraid to Make Things Up

The face of the netroots and an excellent sign for November.

Lamont Relied On Net Roots -- And Grass Roots:
"From Day One, the man who became Connecticut's Democratic nominee for the Senate on Tuesday stuck to a simple message: The war in Iraq was wrong and Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman was wrong to continue supporting it. But while Lamont's success has been widely attributed to the rising power of the antiwar movement and liberal Internet bloggers, the 52-year-old upstart from Greenwich became a political giant-killer by blending both new- and old-style politics. He tapped the Net roots to promote his cause -- but the grass roots to win over voters."
Keep in mind that the Moron Media (being the Main Stream Media) wants to paint this as the radical liberals taking over the party. (A) Our radicals are too stoned to take over anything other than a Ben and Jerry's. They get motivated for 2 things: Burning Man and a G8 Economic Summit. (B) No matter how hard our radicals tried to damage anything, they couldn't produce an enth of the destruction the reicht's... sorry, I mean right's radicals can (or has). (C) Our radicals are not in charge nor will they ever be organized enough to be in charge. Summary; Our radicals are benign, the right's radicals are battery acid looking to corrode any and everything they can touch.

Here is a good historical perspective from an unlikely sourse:

Daily Kos: "Moving Left"

Also, Keep this in mind if you still watch the talking hairdos on the fake news channels when they harp on and on about ball less Democrats who want to run away from the fictional "War on Terra". Especially when they just make shit up day to day often contradicting what they reported the day before.

Poll: 60 percent of Americans oppose Iraq war - Aug 9, 2006:
"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sixty percent of Americans oppose the U.S. war in Iraq, the highest number since polling on the subject began with the commencement of the war in March 2003, according to poll results and trends released Wednesday.

And a majority of poll respondents said they would support the withdrawal of at least some U.S. troops by the end of the year, according to results from the Opinion Research Corporation poll conducted last week on behalf of CNN. The corporation polled 1,047 adult Americans by telephone."
I written it before and I'll write it again... We don't oppose war per se, we oppose this bullshit war because it was illegal, it is draining our treasure, and it is killing our military that we need when the time comes to fight REAL fucking wars, and AND it had nothing to do with terrorism until we made it a training ground for terrorist:

You know anybody who needs an "anti-stupid" pill?

Such a loaded headline. We don't have the time to go through my entire list but let's start at the top:

Bloomberg:
"Aug. 7 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush's hopes of attracting a new generation of voters to the Republican Party may be fading, as younger Americans are far more critical of his job performance than the broader population.

A Bloomberg/Los Angeles Times poll of Americans age 18 to 24 found Bush's approval rating was 20 percent, with 53 percent disapproving and 28 percent with no opinion. That compares to a 40 percent approval rating among Americans of all ages in a separate Bloomberg/Times poll."
"We're the kids in America"... and they're telling the Rethugs to piss off. At least THEY don't need an anti-stupid pill. One of the few, one of the few.
......

Maybe the "anti-stupid" pill or "anti-stupid" silver bullet (for all you NRA'ers), in reality, is voting for the proper people come election time. That could cure a lot of the rampant America stupidity:

Glenn Greenwald has some insight on the double speak of the neocons and how there shit don't jive.

War Room - Salon.com:
"That is the inescapable incoherence that lies at the core of neoconservatism. It claims as its goal the transformation of 'hearts and minds' but the only instruments it knows are air raids and ground invasions. This approach is no different than trying to extinguish a fire with gasoline, and unsurprisingly, the flames that for decades were simmering are now raging, with no limits and no end in sight."
Your liberal media enabling corporations to produce lie filled propaganda and push it as an amateur indie on YouTube. Pfffftttt, yeah, I got a problem with this.

Al Gore YouTube Spoof Not So Amateurish:
"Aug. 4, 2006 — A tiny little movie making fun of Al Gore, supposedly made by an amateur filmmaker, recently appeared on the popular Web site YouTube.com.

At first blush, the spoof seemed like a scrappy little homemade film poking fun at Gore and his anti-global warming crusade.

In the movie, Gore is seen boring an army of penguins with his lecture and blaming global warming for everything, including Lindsay Lohan's thinness.

But when the Wall Street Journal tried to find the guy who posted the film 'Al Gore's Penguin Army' — listed on YouTube as a 29-year-old — they found the movie didn't come from an amateur working out of his basement.

The film actually came from a slick Republican public relations firm called DCI, which just happens to have oil giant Exxon as a client.

Exxon denies knowing anything about the film, and DCI says, 'We do not disclose the names of our clients, nor do we discuss the work we do on behalf of our clients.'"
My grandmom has not been lying all these years. Bedbugs actually exist. Now, I'm freaking out about that Box of Spiders.

Bedbug Infestations on Rise Across U.S.:
"Absent from the U.S. for so long that some thought they were a myth, bedbugs are back. Entomologists and pest control professionals are reporting a dramatic increase in infestations throughout the country, and no one knows exactly why.

'It's no secret that bedbugs are making a comeback,' said Dan Suiter, an associate professor of entomology at the University of Georgia."
