No Expiration - a blog about timeless music: THE DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS AT BKLYN BOWL - LET THERE BE ROCK!:
"I have seen the present of rock and roll, and it is The Drive-By Truckers. I'm not even kidding. They're not punk, metal, 'alternative,' 'indie' or anything else. They are rock and roll. There aren't too many bands like that today."
_______

No Depression Readers Poll and Featured Bloggers' Favorite Albums of 2010 - Americana and roots music - No Depression:
"From those entries, we compiled a giant masterlist and plugged the top 100-or-so most-listed albums into a polling widget. As it turned out, the widget was imperfect - it only allowed one vote at a time, and raised some questions about voting consistency and the widget's reliability. Some members of this community noted the widget seemed to be getting 'stuffed' by fans of artists who encouraged their Facebook friends and Twitter followers to vote for their album. While this struck us as frustrating at first, we figured we may as well throw those gates open and make it a free-for-all. In an effort to see what would happen if many of the artists listed in that Top 100 (or so) list leveraged their fanbases, Kyla sent emails to the management and labels of as many artists for whom she had contacts, encouraging them to also post a link on Facebook and Twitter. Some of them joined in the fun, others didn't. In the end, the results of that round of polling seemed to more adequately reflect the ability and interest of several artists to leverage their social media presence and ignite the enthusiasm of their fans."
_______

11 Picks For Early 2011 - Americana and roots music - No Depression:
"Drive By Truckers: Go Go Boots. On the heels, literally of The Big To-Do, The Truckers are kicking of 2011 with a bang. They are returning with a new album, a band documentary called The Secret To A Happy Ending, and embarking on an upcoming tour. Go Go Boots has been described as a 'country meets rhythm and blues' kind of album. Check out Bettye LaVette's excellent Scene Of The Crime, which featured the Truckers as LaVette's backing band, and you'll get an idea of where this is going. (2/15/2011)"

_______

Living With Music: A Playlist by Michael Koryta - Paper Cuts Blog - NYTimes.com:
"11) A Ghost to Most, the Drive-By Truckers. “I guess I’ll never grow sideburns, it’s a shame with all I’ve got to go between.” A just consistently great band, by turns funny and dark, but always sharp and always rocking. “So Cold the River” features a bright but resentful country boy, prone to flashes of temper, and the Drive-By Truckers and Reckless Kelly became the heart of my soundtrack for those point-of-view portions."
_______

Vic Chesnutt: When the Bottom Fell Out | Spin Magazine Online:
"A few hours after I meet Gelb, the Drive-by Truckers' Patterson Hood is onstage at the 40 Watt Club, in front of a crowd more in the mood for a raucous wake than a reverent memorial. Hood saw Chesnutt for the first time at the 40 Watt back in the mid-'90s and was blown away.

'Pretty much from the first song, I stood there with my mouth gaping open, amazed,' he tells me later. 'It was almost like a religious experience. He had this fearlessness about exposing things about himself or his feelings about things that might make people cringe or make his grandmama cry, but he could write about the most dark, primal stuff and still somehow be funny.'"
_______

DBT refuses that long journey to the middle | Beyond the Trestle:
"As this little rambling comes to a close, I can’t help but extend the Truckers’ experience in the music world to the lives that we all lead. Today may be shitty. Yesterday may have been a trial. But, if you work hard, take a few chances, and trust your skills, you too could end up with the success you deserve. Or at least you will know you did the things that were true to your soul. Cooley, Hood and the rest of you, thanks for the lesson."
_______

Petty & Heartbreakers: America's greatest rock 'n' roll band:
"When Patterson Hood finished singing, he laid his guitar down on stage, still plugged in and walked off. He was followed, one-by-one, by Mike Cooley and the rest of the band, leaving the stage empty when the music ended. Wow."
_______

Petty and the Heartbreakers at their best when they stick to the hits - TwinCities.com:
"Openers the Drive-By Truckers, a club-level band with the spirit of a '70s Southern rock act, likely earned a few new followers with their performance.

They delivered a roaring, hourlong set with far more energy — and a far higher volume — than most stage-warmers. Kudos to Petty for letting them really crank it."

Music I Fucking Love

Jeff Soileau posted his song "Muscle Shoals" on Patterson's Facebook page earlier this week. His son, Evan, created the video. Both song and video are very fine work. The first line is such a large part of the lore of the Shoals. So many variations of that story and not at all a myth. I've seen catfish 4-5 feet in length and so old that they had algae growing on their backs.

The rest of the tune is a great history lesson of Northwest, AL.

Yes, we were very close to being Detroit. Very close.

Here's the vid....

Check out more tunes from Jeff...

BUT, what really captured my fancy about this tune was the vocalist, Lera Lynn. An Athens native (wtf is in the water down their, seriously... Athen's should have its own MTV).

I couldn't be more enamored with this woman. I've always been a sucker for female songstresses but, lawdy, I've been listening to her all week long. No, it doesn't hurt that she OMG beautiful (hey, I think Shakira is beautiful too, but if she opens her mouth and the volume is still on, I'm reaching for a bat to smash things and knitting needles to puncture my ear drums) BUT, she also is a mighty fine strummer (been trying to copy her all week w/0 much luck) and her voice is this ethereal soul-rangy perfection.

So, yes, I'm musically smitten. This is what makes music so very special. It is like finding magic that's been there all along. Keeps hope alive.

Makes me want to move to Athens... and y'all know my going-back-to-the-south issues. Powerful stuff.

Check out Lera Lynn:

I've played this about 3o times this week. I'm really digging the production by AthensSoundies, too. This video moans 'Athens'. Porch singing, summer rain on broad, green leaves...

"The only thing hotter than the triple-digit temperatures at last year’s Coachella festival in Indio was the music produced by some of the event’s most potent artists. Few of them sizzled as much (or seemed as effortlessly cool) as Memphis soul legend Booker T., who performs Saturday at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. The results were so joyous and exuberant that it was difficult to determine who was beaming more, the sweat-drenched members of the audience or Booker T. and his band (which at Coachella just happened to be top Southern rock band Drive By Truckers)."

"2. 25th Hour (2002): Spike Lee filmed this screen version of David Benioff's novel, about a New York drug dealer (Edward Norton) on his last day of freedom, just months after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The first great 21st century film made about a 21st century subject, Lee's movie was a meditation on New York and America, and it captured for all time the spiritual misery and confusion that followed that tragedy. Misunderstood as just a pretty good movie in its time, it's an American masterpiece."

DBT Week in Review - 12/31/09

Suck it, 2009. What you got, 2010?

See y'all next year.

DBT/Patterson

Best of 2009 Artist List on JamBase:

"Patterson Hood - Drive-By Truckers

Albums
Patterson Hood
1. Bloodkin - Baby They Told Us We Would Rise Again
On the surface, no frills, meat and potatoes rock (and damn proud of it) but a closer listen reveals the finest songwriting all year as this 24-year-old band sings the horrifying tale of their trip back from the abyss and sees it through to a joyous life-affirming conclusion. It's like that Leaving Las Vegas movie with a happy ending - unbelievable if weren't true. Such well-treaded territory would suck if not for the magnificence of its execution. 'Wild Rhododendrons' is the finest songwriting I've seen all year, and 'The Viper' and 'Heavy With Child' are just as good. Meanwhile 'Easter Eggs' is the best song of man love I've ever heard (including 'Bobby Jean' and 'Angie')."
_______

Best of 2009 Artist List Part 2 on JamBase:

"Patterson Hood - Drive-By Truckers - Best of Decade List

1. The Glands - The Glands
Patterson Hood by Susan J. Weiand
My favorite album of the decade and also my all time favorite album ever to come out of Athens, GA. It came out in 2000 and is still growing on me nearly a decade later. Unfortunately it came out on Capricorn in the waning days of their attempt at resurgence and virtually no one outside of Athens heard it, but of those who have there is a cult of us who feel exactly like I do about it. They never released a follow up and Ross now manages a record store in town. A truly timeless masterpiece that gets better with every listen (and I've listened to it weekly for over nine years now)."

Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit

Love this. The only thing between Isbell and DBT is Maplewood.

Best Of 2009: Americana:

"JASON ISBELL & THE 400 UNIT Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit [Lightning Rod]
The former Drive-By Trucker loads his second solo record with a wealth of songwriting gems. No song will ever use the phrase “rolled-up $20 bill” in a lyric any better than “Cigarettes And Wine.”

MAPLEWOOD Yeti Boombox [Tapete]
The album title pretty much says it all. Brooklyn boys make good. Harmonies and guitar glitter.

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS The Fine Print (A Collection Of Oddities And Rarities 2003-2008) [New West]
The best way to fulfill a recording contract you’ll ever hear. Seems like some of these should have made a record somewhere along the way."
_______

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, "Cigarettes and Wine" | The People's Music:
"“She smelled like cigarettes and wine.” I know that girl, you know that girl– hell, we all know that girl. Well, probably not the exact girl, but we’ve all known a few, and even more so, we all know the feeling he’s singing about. Even if you couldn’t understand English, you’d know exactly what is going on in this song.

If for some reason you don’t own the album, get it here."

Drinks With: Jason Isbell | American Songwriter:

"Was there a moment when you were younger where you heard a pop song and the format of that really clicked for you?

Oh yeah. I don’t know what artist in particular but a lot of that probably came from ‘80s radio for me: Prince, Crowded House, Until Tuesday and a lot of those bands they were playing on the radio then—Colin Hay from Men at Work. That kind of stuff really appealed to me when I was really young and first started to write. I loved how those songs all fit together."

Vic Chesnutt

Swampland:Memories of Vic Chesnutt By Daniel Hutchens

_______

Vic Chesnutt's death-obsessed folk cuts deep -- and personally | Pop & Hiss | Los Angeles Times:
"Chesnutt's very real ensnarement in the insurance system lends an uncomfortable yet deeply compelling undertone to his lyrical attempts to make peace with illness, his paraplegism and death. Chesnutt doesn't hold out too much hope for whatever healthcare bill makes it through the Senate, either -- 'What will pass will be weak, the powers that be will be happy and the insurance companies will be thrilled,' he believes. Those facts only remind a listener that the small braveries of an album like 'At the Cut' can, if not offer solutions, at least be a bit of comfort and companionship. Or solace that Chesnutt doesn't have to figure out even bigger problems, like how to fix California's ailing economy.

'You guys are the most screwed of all,' he said, laughing."

RIP Vic Chesnutt

Had a chance to go see Vic for the first time in SF at the end of November. I didn't go.

I've always skipped across Vic's work with the promise that some day I'll more fully explore his talent. I'm not the greatest at multitasking when it comes to listening to the music I should be listening too.

I hate that his passing is what finally snapped my attention to his genius.

'Flirted' may be one of the most beautiful suicide songs ever considered. Too poignant, unfortunately.

My heart and thoughts go out to all of my beautiful friends in Athens who have had to endure one shitty year. May peace and life be more present in 2010.

And without getting to high up on a high horse......

Vic Chesnutt Dies; Fund Set Up To Help Family Pay Singer-Songwriter's $70,000 Medical Debt:
"According to the Los Angeles Times, Chesnutt faced $70,000 in hospital bills, a subject he brought up in a Pop & Hiss interview earlier this month. From the interview:

I was making payments, but I can't anymore and I really have no idea what I'm going to do. It seems absurd they can charge this much. When I think about all this, it gets me so furious. I could die tomorrow because of other operations I need that I can't afford. I could die any day now, but I don't want to pay them another nickel."
Folk-rocker Vic Chesnutt dies in Ga. at 45 - Yahoo! News:
"However, Chesnutt had recently struggled with a lawsuit filed by a Georgia hospital after he racked up surgery bills totaling some $70,000, the Athens newspaper reported. He said he couldn't afford more than hospitalization insurance and couldn't keep up with the payments.

The problems baffled his Canadian bandmates, Chesnutt said.

'There's nowhere else in the world that I'd be facing the situation I'm in right now. They cannot understand what kind of society would inflict that on their population,' he said. 'It's terrifying.'"
